I am also trying my best to stay away from the leaks. I think its ridiculous people are getting so upset when the do not know how everything comes together, like if you took a couple scenes from the original last of us and put them together you could easily make the story seem unoriginal and cheesy. Its like how do you know what you have scene comes together how you think?

It's possible that the Fireflies don't actually understand the fungus very well, their failures are seen everywhere in the game and they don't even know if the procedure would have worked, they didn't do much testing, basically, Ellie could have been sacrificed for nothing, just another failure in a long list of failures.
Henry was an emotionally weak character. He lost the only thing close to him in Sam and couldn’t live with that. Joel is similar to him as he couldn’t lose Ellie after Sarah’s death even if it means losing a shot at a cure. Still one of the hardest scenes in the game and my first play through took me by suprise. I’m sure if we got to know the two more than just a few hours I’d shed some tears at that
An interesting interpretation of the end of the last of us is that the fireflies have shown themselves to be incompetent throughout the entirety of the game, constantly losing bases and moving goal posts. Then they only have Ellie for a few hours and are going to cut her brain open instead of waiting or running more tests or something. Also they're very mean to Joel planning on killing him if it wasn't for Marleen. Taking all this into account it makes more sense why Joel would try and save Ellie and just wipe out the whole place. I'm about 100% sure this wasn't how it was to be interpreted but its how i read it. My favorite part of accidental comedy is when that one idiot firefly scientist releases all the infected monkeys and then is bitten by one and has to kill himself in an audio pickup.
@Seth Yes. This probably wasn't meant to be taken this way, but they screwed up. Happens a lot in writing. They make the bad guys out as bad guys, but then try to pull a switcheroo on the audience. You have to understand the basics before you can screw with them. This is what happened with disney StarWars. They claim it's subjective, but I've called it years in advance that people will claim undying love for a game, book, or movie. In a few years they're collecting dust on a shelf for years. Then when they pick it up and play it, watch it, or read it. They realize they don't know why they liked it so much, and then put it back to collect even more dust. People lack perspective on what they like, and truly think they are to special for you to understand. It's easy to call out these bad movies, and games. TLOU is a good game but lacks in replayability. It was from a time that didn't have anything quite like this, but sadly the masses just praised it as is. It is obvious now how it lacks, but some people will claim it's us just being pompous. They will buy the 2nd game, and I bet it will get way to many good reviews. It will probably be a meme of how stupid some consumers are. I doubt they got better on the writing end, and it probably will be the same gameplay overall. Sadly NaughtyDog is probably going to die because of this. I see it all the time in writing that the writer thinks they are god, and therefore can make the rules. Writers get to play god to a point, but they're writing off reality, or else no one would care. This means parameters are set in from the get go. Instead of fully realizing this, as it would mean getting better, they just try to force the story to fit their narrative instead of the other way around. Writing is like chess, but so much harder the more you try to better the story. Sadly people miss the fact that a quick reveal in a certain way doesn't make the story a smart one, but just hides how dumb it truly is a little better. They definitely wanted Joel to seem to be the bad guy in that moment. The reason being that how you feel for the character contrasts the reality of what he is doing. As what you pointed out shows that Joel isn't doing something that will likely hurt the human race, as the fireflies are a bit to incompetent to trust they will find the cure. If it were well written on this part, then Joel would be the bad guy, and his act would contrast with our worldview of good, or bad. It would make his emotions more poignant in the moment. It did do this somewhat, but it will never have the impact it should have had. The only reason people will believe it does have that weight is because of the better storytelling that happened prior. Your point is spot on, and I always thought that putting her under the knife immediately was rediculously stupid. Take your freakin time for pete sakes.
I noticed that too. I know the odds are stacked against them, but they have to be the biggest group of bumbling fools in that apocalypse. Even the psychos that kill everyone on sight are more organized than them. I played the DLC too and when Ellie’s friend told she wanted to be a firefly, I was like why? All they’re good for is dying. Actually, she would’ve made a fine firefly.

when joseph anderson made this exact same connection it re contextualized some scenes in the game for me. kinda neat seeing how many people took it that way.

Currently playing through this game for the second time since I got it last year. Honestly, one of the best games I've ever played. If you havent played The Last Of Us yet, do yourself a favour and play it. Its amazing.
The way I justified Joel’s decision is that the entire game is evidence to why humanity doesn’t deserve to be saved. Everyone who does deserve a second chance has already been bitten, eaten or killed by the various enemy types in the game. The only people that are left now have already done so many horrible things that a return to normal life would basically be a get out of jail free card.
Screw Tommy, his pregnant wife, and his entire settlement of survivors, I guess. Between Tommy's settlement, the safe-zone, Henry and Sam, and even the Fireflies, there's a lot of hopeful moments in this game that make it clear the developers don't think this world is beyond redemption. This probably isn't the case with the sequel, based on developer comments and the gameplay they've revealed so far. My justification for Joel's choice is just that he didn't want to see Ellie die, which is good enough for me. Not to mention, you can find diaries that say there were other immune people who died in other unsuccessful attempts to produce a cure.

Also the cannibals weren't even aware they were eating people, their leader and his closest accomplices lied and manipulated them but at the end they got killed letting them continue their lives normally and unaware. I’ve played through the game 10 plus times and it’s forsure as good as I remember if not better. The story and pacing of the game are unmatched by any other and even know some things about the sequel I’m still going in with high hopes

The gameplay on the first game is so bad. It's slow, lethargic and the graphics suck. It looks like a ps2 game. Last of us 2 has better gameplay but story is worse. Either way I have not played the second one and I only played ~5 hours of the original. Not for me.

My personal answer after replaying it in 2020: No, The Last of Us is not as good as I remember - it is even better! I felt like my second, third and fourth playthrough have deepened my appreciation for the gameplay mechanics and The Last of Us in general.
I've played it 4 times on different difficulties, and it's still my favorite game of all time. I don't think the sequel is gonna match it, but I'm pumped to play through the story because I know, if anything, the gameplay is gonna be smooth and graphic as all hell.
Meme Meme spoilers were confirmed fake, the only legit ones were the things in the 90 minutes leaked video, which really only spoils the fate of a certain character.

Virality is more mysterious than it is rare. Our favorite little boy has all the hallmarks of a successful channel: a popular subject, beyond competent technical skill/equipment, solid story telling, an understanding of what makes a watchable youtube video (i.e. unobtrusive integrated adds, interesting set pieces), a catch phrase. It can have the best weapon mechanic of any game in the world or a dialogue system that rivals even Divinity Original Sin, but the story is what 90% of the fans are waiting to see but sadly from what we've seen, it seems like a huge departure from what made LoU special. Though opinions aren't facts, we can wait for the actual release to find out in finality, and I am gonna wait for that before I spew any more of what's on my mind.

I played TLOU in January and thought it was just ok, I didn't really enjoy Uncharted, which I played for the first time back in 2018, that much either. Don't think I'm gonna pick up TLOU 2 but I'll watch your video Renn.

Like when Ellie snarks about "standing on the fucking pallet" again, or when you expect to use a bin to climb over a fence at the start of the University chapter and it just rolls into the lock and smashes through instead. 13:00 as a casual gamer who usually plays on normal or easy if I'm feeling lazy or too challenged. These parts were the worst parts for me as I was thrown into a different situation and died countless times. So for me only having two of them in there was probably a wise decision to keep to a happy middle between casual players and yourself.
It was the best game I couldn't stand. It was depressing and laborious, it was also excellent at everything it set out to do which was make you feel miserable.

Spoiler alert ( some foreshadowing) Actually, no. My friend pointed out to me that players do not have any choice with regards to the ending of the first game. I would not make the choice that Naughty Dogs forced upon us. It felt like Pixar films that we are getting used to see how they manipulated the audiences' emotions in the very same predictable ways.
If you wouldn’t make that choice then all you’re doing is killing Ellie… so even if they were able to get a vaccine… then what? Literally nothing lmao. At the most the fireflies are immune to the virus
Adding on to this, the whole bit where you have no choice in killing the Doctor, felt forced. It’s like Naughty Dog wanted to purposefully demonise Joel, and set up his demise for the second game. Otherwise, mowing down fireflies? Sure. But killing a Doctor? Joel just mercilessly stabbing the guy in the neck... it feels so out of character, it’s hard to describe.

Jak 3 was great, albeit a little short, and for a spin off Jak X was amazing. The Uncharted games were nice too but they made ND stray away from the games that made them popular in the first place. They went from making games to making movies I feel.
Kakugen there’s like, 12 different GOTY awards each year from several companies. GOTY doesn’t even mean “Game of the Year” anymore, it’s just an excuse for publishers to rerelease older games with all DLC included for original price. And any that are awarded from mainstream gaming media like IGN, well, IGN has proven to be far from credible on far more than one occasion.
I think the main reason joel didn't let ellie die is cause the world just wasn't worth saving, he saw looters and hunters kill people all for the shoes they had and would hang them up and eat. Even if there were no infected people were just as dangerous and the world would never be good, so he didn't want the one good thing to be killed off
The surgeons recorder does not talk about other immune. It is annoying and unfortunate that it is so heavily misinterpreted just because it could have been worded better. What it bbn is talking about is how other cases result in them becoming infection whereas ellie is not the same and is immune, it is not saying that previous studies were people that were immune.
TLOU is one of those games that shines more on It's story and worldbuilding than it's gameplay The sequel shines more on It's gameplay than it's... "Story"
Just finished The Last of Us for the first time and my opinion is... It's a GREAT story... It's an okay game. Idk, the gameplay mechanics are really basic and there's so many cutscenes. You can't really "play" until you go to get the guy who f*cked with Tess and Joel and that's like... what? Half an hour into the game? Until then it's just push the stick to walk/run. I loved it so so much, but I have no desire to play again anytime soon.

If he was just gonna kill a whole bunch of people to save ellie, I don't think joel had come to terms with is daughter's death. He just replaced his daughter with ellie meaning his arc was more of a regression than anything, if you consider it an arc at all.

Youlo King yeah there was “crunch,” but so fucking what. A lot of game studios do that, especially most peoples favorite, RockStar. No one says shit because it doesn’t really matter. An employee from naughty dog even came out and said that being worked too hard wasn’t really a problem, and it was part of the fun of working there. You act like they are slaves away and forced to work on the game, but they knew well ahead of time what they would get into, and they are fine with it. Putting in effort into something is what can make it great.
I don't know. Uncharted 2 is considered the second best uncharted game, and it was written by Druckmann. TLOU was written by Druckmann, and is considered one of the best games of all time. Uncharted 4 was written by Druckmann and is considered the best Uncharted game. Amy Hennig was pushed out by Druckmann AND Straley, the latter being considered to keep Druckmann in check by some people because they think Druckmann is somehow an idiot. The turnover rate (which, mind you, is 70% of 20 non lead designers after Uncharted 4, not of hundreds of employees) has nothing to do with Druckmann, it's Naughty Dog's management that is shit

Druckman is now a director and head writer for last of us 2, and considering the leaks, you can lay the controversy at his feet. He is also the Vp of the company, so he is more than a little involved with how development, crunch and employee retention has been handled.

The Ending - Alot of people think Joel made a selfish decision where he saves Ellie at the end, but we understood. Thing is, he also made the right call. There's most likely not going to be a vaccine for a fungus infection, nor were they going about it the right way. start by obtaining a sample from someone who's immune? that would only lead to death, why not take a sample off the fungus itself?
I never thought the story was that great. There was something that really bugged me about how the story has Joel's daughter die just so Joel can get a replacement later.

Joel- a smuggler that came all the way from Boston to reach to the fireflies. Lost some important friends along the way. Got impaled and torn apart into pieces hundreds of times just to get ellie to that hospital. And when he got there they were planning to kill him. That guy sacrifised everything he had and they were gonna kill him. But no. He saved ellie and ran away. Lets also not forget that Joel's daughter died and a zombie apocolypse started about half an hour after his birthday was over. The world was harsh to him.
I'm with you on this game, I thought it was a fine game, but nothing mind blowing even by the story standard. I've become jaded by these zombie stories that all they are about are just characters trying to survive from zombie and other humans but that's about it. I mean like what else can they do with these kind of stories? The characters are always stuck in the zombie apocalypse with no way out, no way to stop it and there's no end goal for them. it became so repetitive at this point.
Ryan The Animator I guess it comes down to how much you care about character focused stories over the plot itself. Sure the characters in the game aren’t the most uniquely created but they were executed far batter than any other zombie medium imo. Why doesn’t anyone ever talk about the early stealth part of the game where you’re sneaking around some Clickers outdoors, and if you don’t take the route the game wants you to, they are automatically alerted to your position, and come straight after you? That part insulted me, and waste of life parts like that are the reason you SHOULDN’T play a game on hard/extreme. If a game isn’t going to be air tight (and no game is), then how can it expect me to be perfect?
I saw some of the leaks and it really killed my excitement for TLoU 2. However, the more I think about it, the more interested I am to see how the story plays out in its entirety.

I have such a soft spot for this game. I'm usually not the type to play on hard mode because I'm just really not all that good at video games but I enjoyed this game so goddamn much I played it a second time right after the first one on the hardest mode possible and had such a blast. Probably the most I've ever enjoyed playing a game in my life, It's just too good. The ambience, the soundtrack, Ellie, those damn giraffes, the combat mechanics, the way everything looks even to this day.
Even my dad who's awful at video games cried while watching me play LMAO. It's such an immersive experience, it really makes me want to play it again but I don't know if I'll be able to handle the feels a third time and after all these years.
I never thought TLOU is one of the best games I've played, but I think it's great. The gameplay is simple but it doesn't bore me and let's the story have the spotlight. The banter between Joel and Ellie is the soul of this game though...I hope they can pull off the sequel (I don't think they will, but I hope I'm wrong)

Currently playing through this game for the second time since I got it last year. Honestly, one of the best games I've ever played. If you havent played The Last Of Us yet, do yourself a favour and play it. Its amazing.

The way I justified Joel’s decision is that the entire game is evidence to why humanity doesn’t deserve to be saved. Everyone who does deserve a second chance has already been bitten, eaten or killed by the various enemy types in the game. The only people that are left now have already done so many horrible things that a return to normal life would basically be a get out of jail free card.

Screw Tommy, his pregnant wife, and his entire settlement of survivors, I guess. Between Tommy's settlement, the safe-zone, Henry and Sam, and even the Fireflies, there's a lot of hopeful moments in this game that make it clear the developers don't think this world is beyond redemption. This probably isn't the case with the sequel, based on developer comments and the gameplay they've revealed so far.
My justification for Joel's choice is just that he didn't want to see Ellie die, which is good enough for me. Not to mention, you can find diaries that say there were other immune people who died in other unsuccessful attempts to produce a cure.

Also the cannibals weren't even aware they were eating people, their leader and his closest accomplices lied and manipulated them but at the end they got killed letting them continue their lives normally and unaware. I’ve played through the game 10 plus times and it’s forsure as good as I remember if not better. The story and pacing of the game are unmatched by any other and even know some things about the sequel I’m still going in with high hopes

The gameplay on the first game is so bad. It's slow, lethargic and the graphics suck. It looks like a ps2 game. Last of us 2 has better gameplay but story is worse. Either way I have not played the second one and I only played ~5 hours of the original. Not for me.

My personal answer after replaying it in 2020: No, The Last of Us is not as good as I remember - it is even better! I felt like my second, third and fourth playthrough have deepened my appreciation for the gameplay mechanics and The Last of Us in general.

Our favorite little boy has all the hallmarks of a successful channel: a popular subject, beyond competent technical skill/equipment, solid story telling, an understanding of what makes a watchable youtube video (i.e. unobtrusive integrated adds, interesting set pieces), a catch phrase. It can have the best weapon mechanic of any game in the world or a dialogue system that rivals even Divinity Original Sin, but the story is what 90% of the fans are waiting to see but sadly from what we've seen, it seems like a huge departure from what made LoU special. Though opinions aren't facts, we can wait for the actual release to find out in finality, and I am gonna wait for that before I spew any more of what's on my mind.

13:00 as a casual gamer who usually plays on normal or easy if I'm feeling lazy or too challenged. These parts were the worst parts for me as I was thrown into a different situation and died countless times. So for me only having two of them in there was probably a wise decision to keep to a happy middle between casual players and yourself.
It was the best game I couldn't stand. It was depressing and laborious, it was also excellent at everything it set out to do which was make you feel miserable.

It felt like Pixar films that we are getting used to see how they manipulated the audiences' emotions in the very same predictable ways.
If you wouldn’t make that choice then all you’re doing is killing Ellie… so even if they were able to get a vaccine… then what? Literally nothing lmao. At the most the fireflies are immune to the virus
Adding on to this, the whole bit where you have no choice in killing the Doctor, felt forced. It’s like Naughty Dog wanted to purposefully demonise Joel, and set up his demise for the second game. Otherwise, mowing down fireflies? Sure. But killing a Doctor? Joel just mercilessly stabbing the guy in the neck... it feels so out of character, it’s hard to describe.

Literal It wasn’t downhill from there considering they picked up their first GOTY in 2009.
Jak 3 was great, albeit a little short, and for a spin off Jak X was amazing. The Uncharted games were nice too but they made ND stray away from the games that made them popular in the first place. They went from making games to making movies I feel.
Kakugen there’s like, 12 different GOTY awards each year from several companies. GOTY doesn’t even mean “Game of the Year” anymore, it’s just an excuse for publishers to rerelease older games with all DLC included for original price. And any that are awarded from mainstream gaming media like IGN, well, IGN has proven to be far from credible on far more than one occasion.
I think the main reason joel didn't let ellie die is cause the world just wasn't worth saving, he saw looters and hunters kill people all for the shoes they had and would hang them up and eat. Even if there were no infected people were just as dangerous and the world would never be good, so he didn't want the one good thing to be killed off
The surgeons recorder does not talk about other immune. It is annoying and unfortunate that it is so heavily misinterpreted just because it could have been worded better. What it bbn is talking about is how other cases result in them becoming infection whereas ellie is not the same and is immune, it is not saying that previous studies were people that were immune.
No there was another recording that said that their where other immune people that died in surgery but naughty dog patched it.

Just finished The Last of Us for the first time and my opinion is... It's a GREAT story... It's an okay game.
Idk, the gameplay mechanics are really basic and there's so many cutscenes. You can't really "play" until you go to get the guy who f*cked with Tess and Joel and that's like... what? Half an hour into the game? Until then it's just push the stick to walk/run.
I loved it so so much, but I have no desire to play again anytime soon.

Youlo King yeah there was “crunch,” but so fucking what. A lot of game studios do that, especially most peoples favorite, RockStar. No one says shit because it doesn’t really matter. An employee from naughty dog even came out and said that being worked too hard wasn’t really a problem, and it was part of the fun of working there. You act like they are slaves away and forced to work on the game, but they knew well ahead of time what they would get into, and they are fine with it. Putting in effort into something is what can make it great.

I don't know. Uncharted 2 is considered the second best uncharted game, and it was written by Druckmann. TLOU was written by Druckmann, and is considered one of the best games of all time. Uncharted 4 was written by Druckmann and is considered the best Uncharted game. Amy Hennig was pushed out by Druckmann AND Straley, the latter being considered to keep Druckmann in check by some people because they think Druckmann is somehow an idiot. The turnover rate (which, mind you, is 70% of 20 non lead designers after Uncharted 4, not of hundreds of employees) has nothing to do with Druckmann, it's Naughty Dog's management that is shit

Druckman is now a director and head writer for last of us 2, and considering the leaks, you can lay the controversy at his feet. Joel- a smuggler that came all the way from Boston to reach to the fireflies. Lost some important friends along the way. Got impaled and torn apart into pieces hundreds of times just to get ellie to that hospital. And when he got there they were planning to kill him. That guy sacrifised everything he had and they were gonna kill him. But no. He saved ellie and ran away. Lets also not forget that Joel's daughter died and a zombie apocolypse started about half an hour after his birthday was over. The world was harsh to him.

I'm with you on this game, I thought it was a fine game, but nothing mind blowing even by the story standard. I've become jaded by these zombie stories that all they are about are just characters trying to survive from zombie and other humans but that's about it. I mean like what else can they do with these kind of stories? The characters are always stuck in the zombie apocalypse with no way out, no way to stop it and there's no end goal for them.

Why doesn’t anyone ever talk about the early stealth part of the game where you’re sneaking around some Clickers outdoors, and if you don’t take the route the game wants you to, they are automatically alerted to your position, and come straight after you? That part insulted me, and waste of life parts like that are the reason you SHOULDN’T play a game on hard/extreme. If a game isn’t going to be air tight (and no game is), then how can it expect me to be perfect?
I saw some of the leaks and it really killed my excitement for TLoU 2. However, the more I think about it, the more interested I am to see how the story plays out in its entirety.

I have such a soft spot for this game. I'm usually not the type to play on hard mode because I'm just really not all that good at video games but I enjoyed this game so goddamn much I played it a second time right after the first one on the hardest mode possible and had such a blast. Probably the most I've ever enjoyed playing a game in my life, It's just too good. The ambience, the soundtrack, Ellie, those damn giraffes, the combat mechanics, the way everything looks even to this day.
Even my dad who's awful at video games cried while watching me play LMAO. It's such an immersive experience, it really makes me want to play it again but I don't know if I'll be able to handle the feels a third time and after all these years.
