10:15 While I do agree with this to some extent, I personally find DS engaging because the gear-locking system pushes me out of playing just the knight class, which is basically the best class in the games. Also, I've found that DS mainly encourages me to experiment by challenging me to switch things up, not because I NEED to in order to beat a boss or something, but because I WANT to simply to prove to myself that I CAN. Its very much an internal/intrinsic motivation, rather than external/extrinsic. Definitely not for everyone. For example, after clearing Smouldering Lake (IIRC) with my knight in DS3, I completely stopped all progress to restart with every other class with the primary goal of seeing how far I could get with each class following the "proper" playstyle of each class. With the exception of the Deprived, which I played with zero armor, I usually made it to The Road of Sacrifice before I got frustrated, or in most cases, a bit bored (can't say DS3 is a game in which I enjoy playing the same six exact levels ten times in a row, tbh entirely my fault lmao), and promptly switched to a new character/class. It was overall, super fun, and it really culminated in my Deprived, when I killed Ludex Gundyr first try (I don't no-life games, so while I didn't expect Ludex to be hard, I also didn't anticipate one-timing him). Cleric was probably my least favorite, although I will say that magic in general, while powerful, feels way too janky and lacking fluidity compared to melee combat. Frankly, there's something fun about being able to beat the game with the same gear I spawned with at the start (as a knight, the other classes I wielded more varied armories). The only thing I did find annoying (and something I hate in other games too), is when I would come across a new weapon that was just straight-up worse due to my sword being +6ed. making materials less grindy would fix that, because otherwise I don't feel comfortable just tossing materials to Andre to +6 a weapon I don't even know is good/bad yet.
@@KapitanPazur1 at what point did I claim that class selection "matters"? I pick the class that provides the starting gear/stats/spells for the builds I plan to utilize. It makes it faster to get my builds running rather than spending 4 hours farming souls on high wall's dragon. I assume you're referring to me saying knight is the "best" class, as to which I will simply say, it is the easiest and simplest class. "Best" can mean many different things, but as far as ease and simplicity go, knight is by far the "best" I recommend paying more attention to that bald spot, gramps.
@@Ghorda9 I assume you're referencing me getting frustrated around the Road of Sacrifice, in which case yes it was the Crystal Sage that was the issue. Its not so much that he's difficult in general (as you mentioned, throwing knives makes it quite easy), but rather that playing a class "as intended" or "the proper way" (aka: role-playing) puts (self-inflicted) restrictions like not using throwing knives/weapons, which makes the fight way tougher. That being said, I also usually had found my groove by that point and wanted to mix it up again for fun, so I would switch. The difficulty of Crystal Sage with no throwing knives just hastened that a bit.

Your comment is admission that the game is a blatant ripoff whether you like it or not. It has no identity of its own and neowiz will never compare to fs
@@forwardmoving8252I’ve noticed all your comments are you just thinking you’re superior. You’re probably just a fat internet dwelling teenager who gets zero attention and has created this complex to feel better.
Perfect Guard is 10x more consistent and clear to learn then dodging. Finding a point inside a 1d shape is easier then 5d shape. It's the only game where I don't run past enemies, at all. I love fighting them. But I skip 90% of enemies in all souls game once I know the path. Even in Sekiro.
Kind of strange to compare this to Dark Souls, yknow. This game pulls much more from Bloodborne, and some of the ways you think Lies of P improved upon Dark Souls are actually taken 1:1 from Bloodborne. I wonder if it would have been a better idea to review the game independently, without the comparison, given that you seemingly haven't played Fromsoft's more recent titles. Anyway, as excellent as I'm sure this game is, in all the footage and talk about it it seems to be missing the certain something that draws me to Fromsoft's worlds. It's really the main reason I care about their soulslikes, the worlds. I suppose it's down to a personal preference for the sort of obscure, melancholic, dying and hopeless places.
DS3 scream near jailers always gets me. I like the lack of music sometimes. Just hearing the clank of your armored footsteps with ambient screams or crying makes it so much scarier sometimes. You nailed it on enemy placement/traps. Another thing that adds that sense of danger around every corner
The opera house was my favorite area in the entire game. It's not very big, but I just loved the environments, enemies, music and overall mood of the entire thing. Also had my favorite boss fight in the game.
Hellpoint, which is admittedly not a game I particularly enjoyed to play, actually had a similar healing consumable refill for damage dealt mechanic and I really enjoyed how much it felt like I was pushed more towards staying in the fight bit by bit, rather than using a massive bundle of consumables across a marathon and either still having too much at the end or none at all.
You never fail to amaze me with the sheer professionalism and hard work that you put into every video, not only making relevant points but making them in a way that is consistently entertaining and often downright hilarious. I also feel like some of the boss mechanics were kind of far fetched. They went a bit overboard with the movesets on bosses like Simon manus who literally cover the entire arena distance with a single melee move. Also the dash for green puppet monster in phase 2, which has a stupid hitbox and hits you into the corner
@@asdfghjkllkjhgfdsa8725 it's not extremely linear though. You have multiple ways to go. But those usually lead to the same or an item. Not as open as bloodborne where you can choose which area you do next.
I tried this on Game Pass, played through to the first big cop puppet in the train station and it throttled me. I thought, ok I'm not liking this. I woke up the next day thinking about it and decided to try again. I spent the rest of the day playing it. What an amazing fun gem of a game.
I'm playing through this game now and I'm having a blast. I think the setting is really neat. The storytelling and level design is a bit more straightforward than the FromSoftware games, but I've been finding it a lovely change of pace. As Renn mentions, the soundtrack here is really diverse and exciting. It sets itself apart enough in tone and mechanics that it stands as a unique and fun challenge, even for a Dark Souls fan like me.
@@jdrok5026 your right, but there is music in every boss fight. I think they sometimes use more atmospheric music that plays in the background, so you don’t always take as much notice
@@Ghorda9 true I guess there’s not loads of atmospheric music used in ds3. I’ve never played ds1 or ds2 so can’t compare. It’s the boss music that stands out (most of the time), oh and even the main menu music
One thing I would have to disagree with is when you said the enemy attack telegraph is always easily readable across the whole game, its not. For a lot of the enemies and bosses the attack telegraph is actually really good but for bosses like Simon Manus hes too big, and he takes up a lot of the screen so you can't see him begin his attack animation because its slightly off screen, and for bosses like Luxasia the Complete and The Nameless Puppet, they have zero telegraphs for some of their attacks like the one where the puppet dashes forward instantly or the first attack of Luxasia. Most of the time you just have to die to it enough to have the muscle memory to be able to parry it which isn't very intuitive. Overall great video that I mostly agree with though.
That is so crazy to me that I never perfect parried once on laxasia after you said she’s a heavily focused perfect parry boss which means everyone has a different experience in their playthrough depending on playstyle and build. I still dodge everything like I’m playing dark souls and it works but I have a feeling NG+ will be a different story and I’ll have to perfect parry more
Just finished my second playthrough and it's not terrible about till the nameless puppet that's when you'll definitely need to have perfect block down well enough cause dude is a beyblade on crack that time

No one I've seen has mentioned that the game has a french jazz soundtrack, which is crazy because I feel like the tone and atmosphere is what people ACTUALLY like about these games (and games in general) but they convince themselves that it's about progression and boss fights. All you had to say was the Pinocchio game has a gentle sense of lonely ennui.
I started my Souls journey back in 2009 when the only option to buy the game was to import the Asian version. I used my friend's dad's credit card to buy my very first imported item ever... Demon's Souls. Since then Dark Souls came out, was my favorite game of all time. Dark Souls 2 came out, was a disappointing yet decent game, I ran PvP arenas in that one, probably the best PvP experience I had in any of the Souls games. Bloodborne came out, by far was my favorite game of all time. Still is. Dark Souls 3, the most polished Souls game, a very solid experience that's probably even better than DS1, yet it felt more of the same and too reminiscent of DS1. This feeling was amplified especially after Bloodborne which was a wholly unique experience. Sekiro, not the biggest fan but still a really good game, final boss Ashina was my favorite boss fight of all time from any game. Elden Ring came out, 2nd place to only Bloodborne for me as the best games of all time. Elden Ring sometimes even feels like it should be my all time favorite, but Bloodborne edges it out only due to the combat style, speed, eldritch theme and player movement. Then many many Soulslikes over the years, during those releases, in between. If I only consider true 3D soulslikes, none came close to From Soft for me. Then came Lies of P. For the first time, in 15 years of Souls, the impossible happened. A game that ranks up there with the very best. I had some high expectations after the demo, but the final product blew me away. It's not perfect, I would have liked more exploration and secrets, but for this dev's first foray into Souls, this is a perfect start. I still believe Bloodborne and Elden Ring are the better games, and Dark Souls 1 as a whole was a more memorable experience, but I enjoyed Lies of P more than Dark Souls 2, 3 and Demon's Souls... My current rankings: Bloodborne Elden Ring Dark Souls 1 Lies of P Dark Souls 3 Sekiro Demon's Souls Dark Souls 2 P.S. as an avid DJMax fan for the past 17 years, hearing somber versions of those familiar tunes in Lies of P was another thing that added to the experience.
@@BBQcheese Thank you for sharing your take as well. I certainly enjoy seeing others appreciate LoP for the beautiful game it is. I think whether or not it's better really comes down to personal taste. Lies of P and Dark Souls are quite different, but they're better at different things IMO.

Look, I'll be honest, I wasn't originally going to watch this video, because like you've said before, positive videos just aren't as successful as negative ones. Plus, I had only hear things about this game but havr never seen it, so I wasn't interested. But I wanted to support your channel, and after actually seeing the gameplay, I actually want to get it. It looks like Souls game but the aesthetic is much more like what I'm interested in. Thanks Renn!
Lies of P is an insanely good game. i'm going 1st day buy the dlc or even pre order if we can, i still love dark souls and sekiro too. i'm on my 3rd playthrough of lies of P, still having fun.
I love lies of P and I beleieve that it has the best level design in any video game ever at least mechanically if not aesthetically but the bosses just objectively werent very good and i couldnt put my finger on why but after playing prince of persia the lost crown I finally realized that it all fell down to how you dealt with the bosses and inlies of P the only thing you could do to learna boss is learn their parry timings and thats it for most bosses as compared to the last crown where you used like a plethora of time based abilities on top of your movement options to deal with every move made by the bosses its just a lot more fun and inutitive learning to fight a boss that way rather than the way lies of P does it which makes it redundant and downright unfun at times
you need to use sentences and structure your paragraphs better. Lies of p also expects you to dodge and use fable arts, more mechanics isn't strictly better
I mean fair enough and Lies of P is certainly a good game, but I didn't quite enjoy it as much tbh. Felt more like another attempt at a Souls-like to rival From Software games, but not quite getting it right. Lies of P might be the closest any game has come to the FS games tho.
Imo I don't just think lies of p "got it right" but managed to take all the right lessons from previous dark souls games and combined them into a more fleshed out way then any of the previous souls games, at least on the combat/boss front, one thing that previous souls games have done better is the world progression, lies of p is very straight forward game with 0 optional areas, which i guess depending on your perspective, isnt a bad thing I don't think this game deserves the dismissive attitude as being "just another attempt at a souls-like to rival from software"
There is very little to add to your excellent review, aside from the emotional investment in Lies of P, for example, finally being able to hug Spring the cat felt like a vanquished hidden boss or the conversations with the broken puppet in the Swamp chapter. It was as if Round8 sat down at the early design stages and said "How can we improve on the dodge hit dodge game play and the unnecessarily over convoluted side quests of Souls games?" Lies of P also goes down as the most overlooked title from 2023, which illustrates the hollowness of awards and how the gaming world just couldn't get their heads round how a maiden voyage game could be so good. There has always been more than a touch of unwarranted elitism among Souls players and Lies of P just raised the bar considerably for the genre.
Overrated game IMO. I rate it below any from game and team ninjas as well. But above any other souls like I have tried. And I don’t consider hollow knight or remnant 2 souls like, otherwise, Lies is inferior to them.
If you aren’t lying, you should be because other than hilts and blades, the game is a carbon copy of the souls games. A band comes out and they just change a few notes as to avoid copyright, but they sound, act and dress like the Beatles. Would you say they’re better than the Beatles since they wouldn’t even exist if not for them? No. THAT’S why Lies of P ISN’T “better” than Dark Souls. It’s a great game, but it just apes the original on every level.
I think the score definitely is better utilized in Lies of P than Dark souls or all other souls likes mainly bc most of the souls games don’t have much other than the boss music. but I really like the atmosphere in terms of presentation like how you described feeling tragic and sad and hopeless compared to hopeful I really like dark souls and froms approach to this more bc I take it so differently in the sense that it is a tragic and melancholy world that is in constant pain and dispair , and we feel That in the game nonstop and then go to fight over and over despite that is the hope that you bring to the story I like that more I like the idea that as long as you keep going there’s hope. the game doesn’t have any hope I am the hope. I like that dynamic I think it’s a lot more personally attached to the player
That's the point. That's apart of the atmosphere fromsoft builds. Lies of p doesn't use music better it uses it worse I'm sorry fromsoft makes amazing osts and knows how to make the world sound perfect
Also you need to experiment with weapons more and ignore how much it affects the slash, stab, and smash damage. I was using a weapon where the light attack was completely unviable so i just stuck with heavy attacks because i had realized the R2 animation was just as fast as the R1. Top that off with legion arms, consumables, throwables, amulets and the P organ and this game has a ridiculous amount of combat customization

The only thing I did find annoying (and something I hate in other games too), is when I would come across a new weapon that was just straight-up worse due to my sword being +6ed. making materials less grindy would fix that, because otherwise I don't feel comfortable just tossing materials to Andre to +6 a weapon I don't even know is good/bad yet.
>claims to play Dark Souls
>claims that class selection matter in the game
lmao this clown xDDD
@@KapitanPazur1 at what point did I claim that class selection "matters"? I pick the class that provides the starting gear/stats/spells for the builds I plan to utilize. It makes it faster to get my builds running rather than spending 4 hours farming souls on high wall's dragon.
I assume you're referring to me saying knight is the "best" class, as to which I will simply say, it is the easiest and simplest class. "Best" can mean many different things, but as far as ease and simplicity go, knight is by far the "best"
I recommend paying more attention to that bald spot, gramps.
@@avaliantsoul5408 if you where referring to crystal sage all builds can deal with him using just throwing knives to get rid of the illusions
You have entered the comedy pantheon that only people like Nathan Fielder and Eric Andre have, while also always including some extremely valuable insight. A legend in the making, glad to be a follower in the “early” stages before you inevitably get all the credit you deserve!
You're ultra-correct.
As the first video I've ever seen of yours, I love how up until the end I didn't know if you actually thought it was better or not because of how well you kept up the bit. Everything else was also fantastic. Great stuff!
I actually liked the "NPC" fights in this game. It didn't just feel like they slapped on some loot and a healthbar to an AI-controlled player character. They had actual combos to watch out for (I like Robber Weasel).
They literally fought like they were AI controlled slapped with a health bar and some loot
@@joshuamartinez6722 What I meant is that these Stalker fights felt like actual PVE fights unlike the lazy offline player NPC bosses from Shadow of the Erdtree
@@joshuamartinez6722 Your brain must be damaged, kiddo.
the best thing about this game is how hitting enemies with different weapons feels. its powerful
Another great video by the ActMan
The Two Dragons sword is an incredible NG+ weapon.
lies of p is one of my favorite games of 2023, and is a must play for souls fans. The entire time i was playing this game i was wondering if i got pranked at the title screen by fromsoft going as an alter studio. Cant wait for a sequel or dlc
@@forwardmoving8252 holy shit dude you have issues 🤣

Perfect Guard is 10x more consistent and clear to learn then dodging.

Yeah but they did it too much, they used the giant ball of puppets like 4 times and made too many ambushes, it gets even worse in NG
I think its funny Renn doesn't want to remember ds2 considering not remembering things is a huge theme of that game
re: stagger mechanic vs bosses if you have a shotput, you can throw that quicker than it takes to do a charged attack. HUGE help during some bosses!
I found that out... on my 3rd playthrough.
@@RennsReviews i found out from desperation to figure out what the hell they do lol
And throwables are just OP in general
I never felt the need to go farther than NG+ in any fromsoft. I’m on ng4 on Lies and still having fun somehow.
Same, it was also really nice to know that the p-organ still had more upgrades in NG +++
You never fail to amaze me with the sheer professionalism and hard work that you put into every video, not only making relevant points but making them in a way that is consistently entertaining and often downright hilarious. Such a good review. Great writing!
3:19 cut the bs this is where the review starts
Literally my only problem is the lack of side areas to explore, in every other way it's a perfected soulslike
I also feel like some of the boss mechanics were kind of far fetched. They went a bit overboard with the movesets on bosses like Simon manus who literally cover the entire arena distance with a single melee move. Also the dash for green puppet monster in phase 2, which has a stupid hitbox and hits you into the corner
a linear game these days is very welcome tbh
@@assquiat yeah finally no open world game. I am starting to hate them
@@assquiatlinearity is the main reason i havent played lies of p.
@@asdfghjkllkjhgfdsa8725 it's not extremely linear though. You have multiple ways to go. But those usually lead to the same or an item. Not as open as bloodborne where you can choose which area you do next.
I enjoy Renn's reviews and I think he is a good reviewer.
It sets itself apart enough in tone and mechanics that it stands as a unique and fun challenge, even for a Dark Souls fan like me.
whats the endcard song pls? 26:04
Great video. But I can’t be the only one that wanted you to level your Displate. And I know you knew what you were doing. 😂

I'm surprised the security guard didn't already have a "Renn Protocol".
How doesn’t dark souls have music
It doesn't use it liberally. But fromsoft has way better music.
@@jdrok5026 your right, but there is music in every boss fight. I think they sometimes use more atmospheric music that plays in the background, so you don’t always take as much notice
@@shockgames02 it's more of a DS3 thing than the previous two
@@Ghorda9 true I guess there’s not loads of atmospheric music used in ds3. I’ve never played ds1 or ds2 so can’t compare. It’s the boss music that stands out (most of the time), oh and even the main menu music
Dark Souls doesn't have music. It has ambience and atmosphere.
That video had a very wholesome vibe somehow. Great job! :)
I still dodge everything like I’m playing dark souls and it works but I have a feeling NG+ will be a different story and I’ll have to perfect parry more
Just finished my second playthrough and it's not terrible about till the nameless puppet that's when you'll definitely need to have perfect block down well enough cause dude is a beyblade on crack that time
Lies of P is legit the closest thing we got to bloodborne 2
But it isn't. They don't really share anything in common.
Bloodborne also doesn't need a sequel.

The act man wishes he was rennsreviews
YOOOOO ITS THE ACT MAN.
My current rankings:
Bloodborne
Elden Ring
Dark Souls 1
Lies of P
Dark Souls 3
Sekiro
Demon's Souls
Dark Souls 2
P.S. as an avid DJMax fan for the past 17 years, hearing somber versions of those familiar tunes in Lies of P was another thing that added to the experience.

Gotta admit Renn nose what he’s talking about
Look, I'll be honest, I wasn't originally going to watch this video, because like you've said before, positive videos just aren't as successful as negative ones. Plus, I had only hear things about this game but havr never seen it, so I wasn't interested. But I wanted to support your channel, and after actually seeing the gameplay, I actually want to get it. It looks like Souls game but the aesthetic is much more like what I'm interested in. Thanks Renn!
It was so good without being pretentious. Loved getting platinum - can't say that about the souls games (ok maybe Elden ring) 😂
Lies of P is an insanely good game. i'm going 1st day buy the dlc or even pre order if we can, i still love dark souls and sekiro too. i'm on my 3rd playthrough of lies of P, still having fun.
The only problem i have with this video is that Lies of P should be compared to Bloodborne and not Dark Souls.
Lol no. It's only got one mechanic from BB and it's better than any DS game in existence.
you just described my experience with Bloodborne
The thing that I don’t understand is the style of architecture… collodi and Pinocchio are italian so I was expecting more italian type of architecture
Fair enough
i think it's set in or near france
Thanks my favorite little boy
3:29 ts made me look up from my homework and almost start crying wtf
Ur even better than the Lazy Act Man
I dont know Lies of P felt kinda mid for me. I completed the game but have no desire to pick it up again.
I mean fair enough and Lies of P is certainly a good game, but I didn't quite enjoy it as much tbh.
Felt more like another attempt at a Souls-like to rival From Software games, but not quite getting it right. Lies of P might be the closest any game has come to the FS games tho.
Imo I don't just think lies of p "got it right" but managed to take all the right lessons from previous dark souls games and combined them into a more fleshed out way then any of the previous souls games, at least on the combat/boss front, one thing that previous souls games have done better is the world progression, lies of p is very straight forward game with 0 optional areas, which i guess depending on your perspective, isnt a bad thing
I don't think this game deserves the dismissive attitude as being "just another attempt at a souls-like to rival from software"
He probably didn’t recognized The ActMan without the unibrow
Putting the nose back on in the last bit gave me a good laugh, really enjoyed the video.
Don't forget to smoke up next time!
There is very little to add to your excellent review, aside from the emotional investment in Lies of P, for example, finally being able to hug Spring the cat felt like a vanquished hidden boss or the conversations with the broken puppet in the Swamp chapter.
It was as if Round8 sat down at the early design stages and said "How can we improve on the dodge hit dodge game play and the unnecessarily over convoluted side quests of Souls games?"
Lies of P also goes down as the most overlooked title from 2023, which illustrates the hollowness of awards and how the gaming world just couldn't get their heads round how a maiden voyage game could be so good. There has always been more than a touch of unwarranted elitism among Souls players and Lies of P just raised the bar considerably for the genre.
Thank you for quality hilarious content man ! Becoming one of my favs
True and Real. Playing the original Dark Souls in 2024 is a tough ordeal, the game aged like milk.
I m downloading it now ..wish me luck ..good review ..subbed ..✌🏻
I ate my displate and when it came out it was mostly intact unlike its inferior paper counterparts. 1/1 would recommend.
I think the score definitely is better utilized in Lies of P than Dark souls or all other souls likes mainly bc most of the souls games don’t have much other than the boss music. but I really like the atmosphere in terms of presentation like how you described feeling tragic and sad and hopeless compared to hopeful I really like dark souls and froms approach to this more bc I take it so differently in the sense that it is a tragic and melancholy world that is in constant pain and dispair , and we feel
That in the game nonstop and then go to fight over and over despite that is the hope that you bring to the story I like that more I like the idea that as long as you keep going there’s hope. the game doesn’t have any hope I am the hope. I like that dynamic I think it’s a lot more personally attached to the player
That's the point. That's apart of the atmosphere fromsoft builds. Lies of p doesn't use music better it uses it worse I'm sorry fromsoft makes amazing osts and knows how to make the world sound perfect
I'm watching the whole ad just because there's The Sims 1 soundtrack in the background. X)
Whats the song at 12:49 and 17:20?
Also you need to experiment with weapons more and ignore how much it affects the slash, stab, and smash damage. I was using a weapon where the light attack was completely unviable so i just stuck with heavy attacks because i had realized the R2 animation was just as fast as the R1. Top that off with legion arms, consumables, throwables, amulets and the P organ and this game has a ridiculous amount of combat customization
I just found this channel and man its incredibly good stuff. Your voice reminds me of LGR a little and your public skits remind me of golden era Mega64
Bro really threw act man under the bus
The problem with Lies of P is the last third of the game, where the story and pacing completely fall apart imo.
