The "Quando rapito in estasi" was glorious, and so much like her Lucias from the 1970's. The entire performance was evidence that the Sutherland voice, although different from her youth, was still an source of wonder and amazement. Thank you La Stupenda Joan Sutherland, and the generous individual who shared this video with you!
My first production as chorusmaster of Edmonton Opera was Lucia in 1983 with this tenor and Deutekom. She was no comparison with Dame Joan, who I saw sing Lucia 3 times in 1967 here in Vancouver. A wonderful memory - equal to seeing her very first Norma here in 1963, and her very first performance of Lucrezia Borgia in 1972!
If you play all of these times quickly in succession, you have an Eb major scale from Eb5 to Eb6! 1:51:25 1:51:49 1:51:51 1:52:16 1:52:04 26:3857:311:54:30
I also saw her onstage as Lucia in 1982, but in New York. IIRC, it was her return to the Met after several seasons, after the management had treated her shabbily. At any rate, she was absolutely thrilling. I continued to see her until 1987, her farewell to the Met. BTW, is this performance conducted by Stuart Challender, not Bonynge? I wonder what the circumstances were - a guest appearance by the Australian Opera?

I was present at this performance. I can't believe someone dug this up after all this time. THANK YOU!

Un altro importante tassello per una conoscenza più approfondita e consapevole delle grandi doti artistiche di Dame Joan! 💖

She was marvelous here, astonishing for her age to sound so assured.
She wasn’t so old, she sounded like this until the late 80s.. a marvel.. her 1985 Lucias were unbelievable
Oh my word! You can clearly hear the gravitas of her voice here!

Bonynge didn't conduct this performance???
That's one reason why its so good.
conducted by Stuart Challender apparently... a wonderful Australian artist taken, like so many others, by AIDS far too young.
Even the baritone has more high notes than the tenor ahahah
