For anyone and everyone having this surgery: I had it a few months ago (I was only 26). I was extreeeemely nervous and was in complete denial that it was actually going to happen. Everything went totally fine, I recovered quickly, and I feel like it went way easier then expected. You will pull through and look back on it casually just like I am now a little over 2 months later!! Also, I got on a plane to Greece 6 days after my surgery to celebrate Easter and apart from a few naps and some pain meds I was totally fine and ate my familys food like an absolute queen. YOU GOT THIS!!

I had mine total thyroidectomy a week ago, I was nervous before going to the OR, but the Anesthesia team and the doctors, nurse even my surgeon were really nice, they made me feel relax and before you know it I was awake, it was a lot of pain waking up and swallowing even talking but thank God I felt so much better after a few days. If any discomfort occurs, call the nurse. Do NOT hesitate. I had my surgery almost 20 years ago. I went from feeling great to a little funky to I couldn't breathe within less than 2 minutes. I ended up with a 2nd emergency surgery. Do not hesitate if you feel bad or off in any way. And whether you are having a partial or complete thyroidectomy you should insist on staying over night. It's very rare for something to happen but I'm proof that it can. It's better to be prepared.

I've been under the watchful eyes of my Endocrinologist for a number of years due to Thyroid issues. Two benign biopsies. I was functioning normally until recently when it became enlarged. I'm currently recovering from my Thyroidectomy. Thankfully I had the BEST Dr and medical team. I was prescribed medication but didn't need it following surgery. Yes, it can be very frightening when the pros and the cons are explained to you. When the surgical glue loosen I can work on fading the scar which is very visible. Thank you Rachel. I am enjoying your videos so much. I have having a Thyroidectomy in 2 months. I have had 3 nodules for several years. Now I have 4. I get an ultrasound and fine needle aspiration done every year. The nodules are benign but 3 of them have grown to 4 cm. When they are this large. They can cause problems with your windpipe. So my endocrinologist said its time to remove half or all of my thyroid. I am 67 and I choose to have the entire Thyroid removed. I don't want to remove half and then have to have another surgery later on when I am older. This is my first major surgery and my first time under anesthesia. All the information you are sharing is very helpful. I appreciate it so much. I hope you are doing great. 😊

@@mariachua3780 today is 3 weeks since I had my total thyroidectomy. My recovery has gone quite well. I didnt have to stay in the hospital and I didnt come home with a drain. The first week I was pretty out of it and had to take pain medication. I basically slept for the first 3 days. I did not lose my voice. My husband took wonderful care of me. I kept the talking down to a minimum for a few days. By the end of the second week, I was only taking Ibuprophen.
I slept on a Wedge pillow with a memory foam pillow on top of it for 2 weeks. I highly recommend a Wedge pillow. The Wedge pillow felt too hard so I added my memory foam pillow and it was perfect.
I have been putting "Aquafor" ointment on my incision twice a day. It was recommended by my surgeon. Luckily, the incision hasn't itched...yet. I am pretty much back to normal but I don't lift heavy things yet.
I have had more acid reflux than ever. I am consulting with my Dr. about that. Good luck to you with everything. 😊

Thank you for this video, even though this was 3 years ago. I was called today by my endocrinologist and she told me it wasn't good news and I knew right then what it was about, my first two FNA's came back inconclusive, but they sent in a different sample I was told and this came back positive for cancer. I have a very small cancerous nodule on my right side of my thyroid and she told me they used to take out the whole thyroid, but in 2015 they changed the guidelines and now they only remove half. I requested a biopsy for the left side of my thyroid as I have 2 very small modules, they never biopsied the left side so I requested they do that. She told me she's going to put in a referral to the surgeon and that she'll let me know from there what day and time I'll be scheduled. I'm very nervous because I really don't want the whole thyroid taken out, but of course if it needs to be done I want that. I'm also going to ask if they're going to test the lymph nodes in my neck while they're in there. I'm worried about gaining weight as I know the thyroid is a big part of that. I don't do well with anesthesia so that's another thing I'm concerned about. My cousin is an RN and she said she's going to come take care of me after surgery, so that's a good thing as I have a small dog who needs to be walked, fed etc. I feel like crying but that won't help anything. I have faith in God that he will watch over me. ✝️🙏💜

I had mjne removed 16 years ago. They didn't give my anything prep. calcium, iodine or body wash nothing. This was done at Johns Hopkins in Maryland.
Maybe because it was so long ago. 🙄
I had absolutely NO PAIN AT ALL, EVER... I had a one night stay.
They woke me every hour checking my calcium levels by pinching my cheeks and chin area. If your calcium level is too low, your face would feel numb.
Other than all that it was a piece of cake.
Only thing that hurt was taking out two or three stitches.
She yanked them out like a beast. Pretty heartless. I supposed to rest was glued. Lol Not all Operations are the same. It was the easiest operation Ive ever gone through. Only took pain med one time after surgery.
Magbe a for a year my throat felt very Tight I could feel every time I swallowed.
Used a good skin cream moisturizer on the incision after the redness was gone. I used it for months. I hardly have a scar at all. But it's important to keep it moist....👍

Very informative. I had my total thyroidectomy end of Jan of '24. Everything went fine. Lab work was great. I had a multi nodular goiter which was about 8 cm in length. Its difficult to describe the pain. It just hurt. I only took Tylenol and 2 Tramadol ( 1 post op day and first evening I was home to just take the edge off which helped). I also have an allergy to adhesive so the surgeon use the Deramond (a glue to cover incision). A little over a week post op I began having a slight reaction to the Deramond with blisters and itchiness. It then worsened. My PCP recommended Zyrtec 3x a day and adding Benadryl which somewhat helped but at day 12 post op the blisters were popping though the Derambond and the antihistamines were unable to control the itching and the Deramond was removed 14 days post op. At 16 days post op from blisters formed and in addition to previous blisters now weeping. Still some minimal weeping and itchiness. Now slowly healing.

I walked to the bathroom right out of post op lol. And walked to my room that I had to stay in overnight! And then I got a cheeseburger and fries 😂😂 i wasn't in any pain except for my throat from the tube but other than that I was watching TV eating all night getting meds talking everyone's ear off and ready to go home!! Everything in the hospital was super easy! However being home was a different story! I'm on day 10 after my thyroidectomy and my neck is still soooo swollen! The first couple days after I got home my entire chest swelled up and i had AN EGG sized ball right below my incision! Scared the hell out of me and thought maybe I needed a drain but the dr said it was fine after sending him pics. It was also very hot to the touch but I used heat instead of ice (ice seemed to hurt it worse) and the swelling went down big time! Sleeping has been crap! Last night (day 9) was the first decent night sleep I've gotten since my surgery. I couldn't lay on my sides it hurt to sit up and just couldn't get comfy in any position to sleep. On a positive note I had such a good dr u literally can't even see my incision anymore its amazing! On a crappy note I'm probably gonna need voice therapy because it really affected my vocal cords:( I know its only been 10 days but my voice is unrecognizable and I have no pitch nothing. And I used to sing and I can't even hum and a correct note so that's scaring me a lot and making me so sad. So I just pray I get my voice back. But I'd rather not have a voice than have cancer so I shouldn't complain!

Hi Rachel. I REEEAALLLYY appreciate your video. It was the first REAL video of the surgery and it was totally helpful and reassuring. I actually have a goiter 11cm so it really has affected a lot of things in my body. It’s so big that it’s pushing my trachea. So I have all the symptoms: hard time swallowing, breathing is not that bad. But I notice it’s compressing some nerves cause the pains I’m getting in my arm, chest, and legs. Pretty much the right side. I have my surgery the ending of July but I don’t know if I’m able to wait that long, but I’m afraid that’s the earliest the doctor got! But hopefully my surgery goes smoothly and hope that my body can hold on longer til I get the surgery. And I have low tolerance for pain, so what you described I hope is not as bad. 😳😢 but thank you for the detailed experience because it makes me feel a little more at ease for when I get mine. 😊😊

I feel like my hospital would not let me spend the night, but I feel like I would need to, but I know they probably just send me home right after they dug around in my throat. I watched a video of them performing this surgery and there's a lot of blood. Actually pretty intense, even though it's probably a very common and simple surgery.

You need to have your insurance pay for a 23 hour stay. It's really just semantics but it is how drs. can get insurance companies to pay. My hospital only required 23 hour stays on full thyroidectomies. Thanks to me, all thyroid surgeries are all now required overnight stays. It is a very common and safe surgery but like with anything, the unexpected sometimes happens. It should happen at the hospital.

This is very helpful. My surgery is the first Friday in October. I have to have my left thyroid taken out 4cm however, my right side has two very tiny nodules and the surgeon said it’s up to me whether I want a total thyroidectomy. Has anybody on this situation of having only half of their thyroid removed, and what was their experience if they had the same situation as myself? I would imagine I would have to continue monitoring it. And if it does have to be removed later, is this a more difficult surgery the second time? I’m rather nervous, because leaving it up to me to decide to do a total thyroidectomy seems daunting I don’t have the wisdom or knowledge to know what to expect, and how to make this decision. Thank you so much and thank you for your amazing video. It really gave me a lot of information of what to expect.

Amazing news I need to share with everyone a month ago I was going in for my preop appointment which they like to do a month before surgery. Before I left for my appointment, I called a friend that had some thyroid issues I wanted to get some advice from her as well, and just find out what her experience was. I’m so glad I made the call. She had the exact same issues I had the only difference was her thyroid nodule was on the right side, same size as mine on the left side.
She told me about this doctor that does radio frequency ablation RFA This is done for large nodules that are not cancerous. I called this doctor (while I was in the parking lot ready to go in for my preop ) and the office that does RFA scheduled me the following week. I then went into my preop appointment for surgery, I mentioned this RFA procedure to the physicians assistant, and she immediately started nodding her head. she said they were going to get a technician/doctor to do this procedure in a few months she said that she would do the same thing.
I went to the doctor the following week that did the RFA procedure he did an ultrasound and and since I was having no issues with swallowing breathing etc. he said that he would wait and see if I did develop symptoms but he saw no reason to do anything at the present time! Until then we would monitor it for a year and return to make sure everything was OK also because there was a test done to make sure that I have no chance of cancerous cells that I should just continue to monitor it.
If you are thinking of having thyroid surgery please find a technician somewhere that does RFA And have a consultation it may save you unnecessary surgery!

I unfortunately have to have this surgery as well soon (going to talk to a surgeon in the next few days). This is honestly the first surgery I will need in my life, and hopefully the only one/last one. These were helpful tips so I know roughly to expect and the notebook idea is a good one (something I would have forgotten and thus would have forogtten things to ask or information they give me). Hoping mine goes well as well and recovery is fast (considering it is the holiday season pretty soon and I'd like to have this done and be mostly recovered by then, but Iguess at the same time, I don't want to rush things as well, but do want to get the surgery at least done as soon as possible as the idea of cancer always scares me, even though they say that PTC is one of the "better" cancers to have if you're going to have cancer since the prognosis is generally good for the majority of cases, but it's still something that can be unsettling for many, especially considering that cancers can come back even if you remove the organ in question.)

Going to talk to the doctor this thursday about surgery. Did anyone have to stay a night at the hospital. What type of pain meds you get after surgery and then they sent you home. Im kinda scared about the pain. I dont take pain meds on a regular basis but I have a high tolerence with pain meds. Ever since my back surgery ive been like that. How long was you off work

I think I cover this in another video and to be honest can't remember exactly, but I know I waited a long time for it to peel up on its own! I may have taken a few off eventually because it took longer than I was told it would

Thank you for your informative comments. I am having a thyroid ectomy tomorrow waiting for the phone call today for my surgery time I’m 67 and live alone so a little worried about my postop recovery time. My surgeon does only same-day surgeries so your information was very helpful. I am a note takerand bring my notebook with me wherever I go. Thank you.
