It’s important to note regarding the mineral wealth in Africa - not to knock Africa but “rare earth minerals” aren’t actually rare, that’s just what they’re called. And also, it’s likely that other important mineral deposits will be found now that we need them. For example, the largest known lithium deposit was just found in the US .. this year! Now people are motivated to look. Remember how in the early 2000s everyone said we were running out of oil? Well the. We found the Permian Basin and fracking I like Africa a lot but the mineral and energy cards are not going to be the strongest hands to play against the West (the US has all the rare earths, lithium, oil, etc it needs). I think the best hand it can play is it’s robust populations and consumer markets. Africa has very high birth rates and huge populations - access to sell things to those people is the hand to play. There’s no serious dependence on any African resource but access to a booming consumer market is certainly something the economic powers of the US, the EU and China would all love to have
the US does not yet have all the rare earth minerals but that being said, simply making deeper mining profitable in general, now we have not even scratched the surface of the earth, litterally, if you compare the earth to a goldplated ball, we have not gone deep enough mining to expose the metal beneith the goldplating, we have dug a few holes but those were expensive in their own right and only focussed on drilling. just saying, anything could happen in this regard, we also recycle many materials pretty well

What I’m slowly starting to understand is that these countries in central to west Africa that are rich in natural resources whom most are having conflicts within them in who controls the government and the fields/mines will always be a issue hence why western companies take advantage of this. Wish these African leaders would come together and figure out a fair deal that pleases all parties
You got it wrong. It is the western countries that send people to start the conflicts. And we have been aware of that for a long time. I think all that is happening right now for multiple reasons, one is that America is busy with high inflation and Russia so they can't help France this time. Second is that people are tired and the third one is that there are a lot of Africans who have been to Western society and are coming back to Africa.
From my point of view, if the various African countries want to make deals that help their nations, GOOD. If China offers a better deal then they should take it. I get annoyed when other nations try to dictate what other leaders should do. For western diplomatic leaders, especially the U.S. to be alarmed at what China is doing is laughably hypocritical. And this is from a. Free market capitalist viewpoint. We need to get rid of this obsession over China. The US I believe doesn't understand why China is acting the way it does. It’s not this big boogeyman, it’s a nation that STILL remembers the humiliating century, and is continuously at risk of collapse. As for Africa, the U.S. and western powers has had numerous chances to make a beneficial partnership. How many failures did foreign interventions play out? How many negative “neo-imperialism” deals did western powers make? Or the failure of humanitarian efforts play out? The numerous dictatorships supported?

In my opinion I'd prefer that wise African leaders should see the trap and not easily trust cause once bitten twice shy.. us Africans should sleep with one eye open and snatch the opportunities faster than the snare can retract or whatever,, we gotta be more careful.

@@puraLusa Yea that's true. The goal of a company under capitalism can't be the well being of it's workers or the enviorment. If a company would do that, some other company (with lower moral standards) would just out-compete them. So yea, it's not a problem about China or Germany or BMW, the core problem is capitalism.

@@puraLusa Sure, there are definetly companies giving up on some profits (at least to some extend) out of awareness for the workers/enviorment. The problem is, in most cases another company can start out-competing them. The same is true for governments. For example, Germany is producing lot's of cars. If they could stop the manufacturing of combustion engines today, it would have a big impact on climate change. But if they did so, and other counties don't, then the cars will just be produced somewhere else. That's why I don't critizise a specific company or country, but the capitalistic systen itself.
I will not say that Russia and China is in Africa for humanitarian reason. Certainly they are there for their own interest. So what is the problem that EU and US are facing that they feel the need to criticize it. Same story right.. They have shown it first
At least we all know. Rather than having people starting wars in our countries, then portray it is a civil conflict where they are the savior and then plunder our countries
All countries look for their own interests above the rest. That is understandable. However those that are smart enough to actually provide something in return and gain better relations with potential partners rather than try to act as the boss of them are the ones that will be preferred in the end as future partners. This is how proper investments work.
You can not force people to like you. If some African nations wants the west out than we should go. Seek closer cooperation with those that are still willing. Europe and the US should not be to worried loosing acces to resources. After decolonisation many European nations got a lot richer than during colonisation. I do hope that african nations choosing to abandon the west will not start begging for financial aid, development money or try to flee to Europe once things go south. This is your choice, live with the consequences good or bad.
Lol the condescending and arrogant manner you speak is the reason no one likes the west not the middle East , Africa, India subcontinent, south America, most of Asia , literally no one , lol good luck in your lack of need of Africa resources.
The west should never worry itself of what will become of Africa if Africa separates from them. Besides, let us not forget about dedollarization, which will significantly reduce Africa's need for the dollar or so called aid.
Russia / China: Rejoice African countries, the West is gone. African countries: That means we have finally been liberated right? Russia / China: We prefer the term "New management".
Your analysis left out a major element, demographics. Sub-Saharan Africa is one of the few places in the world that is still experiencing explosive population growth, the UN projects a doubling over the next 25 years. Without a commensurate increase in agricultural production and industrialization that might allow them to cope with it, there is a disaster brewing there. China may find that getting involved is a good deal more expensive than they bargained for and Europe may be more concerned with fending off a wave of refugees that will dwarf what they're dealing with now than with maintaining influence in the area.
The issue facing the African people is rather straight forward. Can its people really accept its current reality and accept the toil required to develop their nations from where they are! In the past, even after the European colonial powers had officially left, the African people are still unable to accept the reality THEN! Of course, with plenty of rhetoric from their Western education leaders selling their versions of Western democracy even let the UN Swedish economist [Myrdal??] to proclaim that Africa would and should progress much faster than Asia by 2000! What happened?????
This is why a partnership between an African country with democracy and the West = strong. Dictator led African countries partnered with the West = remain underdeveloped and exploited.
Well Africa is a big place some countries in Africa are richer then others and we've seen countries rise and fall in the last 50 years. I would imagine this pattern will continue and a handful of African nations will eventually be wat richer then most. The problem is two fold security and property rights so African nations need to find ways to balance these two things if they want to grow.
In the real world, you either develop your country for your benefit, or someone else will come in to develop it for theirs. Empire is the natural state of international politics. What we're experience now is simply a pause enforced by the American Bretton-Woods world order. That world order is ending, and we can expect to see history continue where it left off in 1945.

We'll see in a few years. There is the issue of Chinese construction quality to consider and Russia, due to the meat grinder that's happening in Ukraine will have its security capacity diminished. Just too few people. The real reason, why there are coups now in Africa is, that the EU is letting them be. Most of Northern Africa is dependent on food stuff imports from Russia and there are basically four breadbaskets, that feed the world. That being Europe, Russia and Ukraine, USA and South American continent. Imagine, what would happen, if Europe were to get enraged for one reason or another, and blockaded Denmark straits, Gibraltar and Istanbul Straits. That's a famine of biblical proportions just waiting to happen. And I am concerned, that as Europe is shifting right politically, it's only a matter of time, before that happens.
I see a lot of “under new management” jokes, which is exactly the mistake many western commentators make about the situation. When you have only one supplier for vital infrastructure, and that supplier is a recent imperial power that “granted independence “ to you without conflict, especially if that power had always ruled indirectly even before said independence, you are in a terrible bargaining position. The increase in influence from the eastern powers isn’t a change of management….it’s an event that forces a change of existing relationships to one more closely resembling a free market trade situation.

I think it's a mistake to characterize the loans from the Chinese Development Bank as being "cheap". Compared to the World Bank, CDB interest rates are often more than 100 basis points higher and the terms can be decades shorter. After decades of making loans to projects that defaulted, the World Bank has become more picky about where it lends simply because it's bad policy to bankrupt your debtors. The look for good projects that will benefit the borrowing nation, not send it into default. So countries typically turn to China when they are declined by the WB or the EBRD, not because the CDB offers more attractive terms.
As an add on, and to get some cynical eyes rolling, this very well produced video and other sources over state the mineral-resource reason for engagement with Africa. I believe the main purpose is the economic development, stability, and quality of life in Africa for Africans. Neither the US nor EU benefit in a world where they have to do all the heavy lifting, and more notably, fend off the migration of millions seeking a better life in North America and Europe. Obviously the Coups are due to public outcry at perceived French occupation. This is a thing that happens, you send in troops to actually help with an issue, all the locals see is tanks and soldiers with french flag armbands patrolling their streets and reminding them of past aggressions.
To be fair, at the very start of Decolonization, just after WW2, the French Foreign Legion (under the 4th Republic) did a LOT of no-nos to qwell nationalistic uprisings in north africa...

The western political elite is visionless and too focused on keeping their dominance instead of adopting to the new political situation. This is one of main reasons why French influence is literally evaporating into thin air within only few years as macron literally acts like a neo-colonist! Also not entire western alliance is loosing ground in Africa, Turkiye has been spreading influence in many African countries and Turkish army can operate in many countries where US or France are not welcome like Somalia. The biggest problem of Turkiye they don't have financial means to spread their influence further otherwise you can literally replace a lot of those russky/Chinese flags with Turkish flags in a single day. However US and France are more worried about containing Turkish influence despite great benefits it can provide. Even taliban asked Turkish forces to stay and control critical infastructure including Kabul international airport as they didn't have qualified personel to do so but Turkish side refused. So Afghanistan was also opened to chinese influence without slightest resistance from the west. More correct title should be ''How moronic actions of the west gifting Africa to China and Russia on a golden plate''! Also claiming the west is loosing ground because they require democracy for investments gave me such a good laugh, i guess all those kings, princes, dictators, warlords, cartels or even terrorists the west has been supporting were democratic, huh?..
I don't see a change in policy by the west to be more ideologically consistent to be a bad thing. It might loose them opportunities, but it makes their position stronger when they use their values as justifications for other actions. Ultimately it's become less hypocritical, and a turn for the better, no?
It makes sense that China was willing to give risky loans for infrastructure in Afica, while the common people in France are paying for the security of those assets.

Having lived in Africa and visited several African countries multiple times, I am very glad to see Russian and Chinese investing their money and soldiers in the geopolitical sphere and economic development there. It’s a sure bet they will get a great return on this investment. 400 years of investment by Europeans and then Americans has surely brought fantastic returns.. all the power to you 👍🏻👍🏻
full disclosure, it has brought great return on investment, in the form of cheap mineral resources, copper was also refined to electricity grade copper trough electrolysis utilising massive dams, dams which utterly wrecked the natural processes in and around rivers, the waste also poluted large swathes of land. I know that things are not much better in many area's there, but in truth our "good intentions" were just giving the child a name, corporations, elites,... they wanted those ressources, what is bs is blaming "whites" or "europeans" the blame lays squarely with those who did it and those who benefitted by it, and off those most are now African elites as well as corporations like Unilever which was active in the exploitation of African resources, same for the Belgian royal house, British royal house and others which have made their initial fortunes trough abussive means in truth colonialism really didn't end, but under new management and as such Africans should look towards their own political elite which overwhelmingly descends from the local elites put in power by european colonial powers over 60 years ago

Thanks to dedicated diplomatic efforts by the US, the leaders of both countries, the US and China, convened in person after a year to enhance their challenging relationship. After engaging in a direct conversation, Biden once again commented on Xi's leadership style, which was perceived as lacking diplomatic etiquette and deviating from the customary diplomatic protocols. The video captures Antony Blinken's unease in response to President Biden's characterization of Xi as a dictator, which differs from the prudent approach upheld on the same day.
Does this mean Western goverments (rather, their taxpayers) can stop pumping money into most of Africa for which we seem to get nothing except some minerals? We can use some of the saved money to keep out the hoards of refugees that will result from all of this authoritarian love and generosity.
Africans in the early 21st century: China and Russia are the BEST!! Africans in the late 21st century: This Neo Russo-Sino Colonialism must END!! Africans in the 22nd century: Still poor, thanks to AI, Climate Change, Global Warming, African on African Violence, and Colonialism by the Slavs and the Hans. Oh, and they’ll be teaching this, just like when they taught their students about French, British, Italian, Belgian, German, Spanish, and Portuguese from the 20th century.
Fun Fact: It was Russia who saved The Union during the American Civil War as they sent their Navy to San Francisco and New York when England and France were just about to enter the war on the side of the Confederates since London created the Confederates. France was already in Mexico making a spear head movement to resupply the Confederates and to open up a Pacific Theatre and to create a port in California. England already amassed 11,000 troops and growing stationed at their Northern Confederacies border now called Canada ready to open a Northern Theatre to divert Union troops away from their Southern Confederacy then to attack The Unions naval blockade. The Union would have been completely destroyed and annexed by those two great powers leaving the Confederates to exist as either a puppet state of London or to be fully brought back into the fold of the British Empire. London was already courting (threatening/bribing) other countries to get involved like Spain while Russia was in talks with Prussia to ally with incase London was to intervene. Seeing all of this Tsar Alexander II wrote a letter to Queen Victoria saying “If you enter in this war it will be a casus belli for all out war with the Russian Empire”. The stage was set for the 1st World War and Russia stopped it. There is also a memorial in San Francisco for the hundreds of Russian sailors who came off their Asiatic fleet ships that died while helping the city put out a fire that threatened to lay waste to it during the War.
The Russian fleet also threatened to Shell Australian ports along with other British Pacific Colonies if Britain aided the Confederates. A confederate war ship spent a lot of time in Australian waters and was supported by the Australian public, some even signing on as crew members. This Confederate war ship laid waist to the US Pacific whaling fleet and is reported to have fired the last shot in the war Russia also helped Thailand (Kingdom of Siam) maintain its sovereignty from being completely Partitioned/Annexed from the British and French around the same time. The very word Thai (ไทย) means 'free man' in the Thai language which is partially to thank to the Russians as they might have ended up being a colony or part of another country/colony if not for their intervention.
I hate when people constantly cry about how “Africa always needs foreign handouts”. Yes, this is reality. How about when Asia needed handouts? Or South America? Or Europe? Every country/continent in the world has needed handouts from foreign nations at some point in history. So who cares? What matters is if Africa gets better and people are seeing tangible improvements to their lives. If that’s happening, who cares where aid is coming from??
Well , the Global Northeast ( I am not call them west) aparently , now that they would not be able to keep Africa in its current state to explore it like it did since for centures ( I am not from an English speaking country if you noticed any errors)
How much responsibility does the current western countries have on crimes involving colonialism that happened hundreds of years ago? The people that were involved, the forms of governance, and literally every aspect of that society is long dead. The world is a far different place than it was hundreds of years ago so I think it’s about time for some to forgive and move on for there is plenty of current crimes for everyone to be mad about.
Plenty. The issue, though, is that instead taking agency and fixing the problems, too many of the local corrupt governments (who conveniently forget that billions of dollars flow into the continent) piss away the money on poor planning, terrible governance, and cronyism. South Africa was a country on the rise... until they decided they didn't want to be anymore. Rolling black outs isn't the fault of British colonialists, actually.
Colonialsm was 70+ years ago. Also do not forget that regime changes since then have been backed by Western parties since then. I don't think Chinese and Russian influence will last in Africa. Russia is stuck in war it cannot win but cannot withdraw from without significant political repercussions. China's economy is rapidly declining and they cannot afford to continue buying influence.
China's economy isn't "rapidly declining." Just because Xi Jinping isn't pumping the real estate with stimulus doesn't mean China is going away. The fact that people genuinely think China's economy is collapsing know absolutely nothing about geopolitics and economics. Say what you want about the CCP, but China's economy is not going away.
The same happens in Latin America. Wherer The West is not making alliance with countries that have a similar culture language or religion. Russia, Iran and China are taking advantage for this situation. The last APEP organization created by USA and 11 latin American countries is a shy step, but we need to do more. Africa’s problems are NOT due to colonialism, corruption, bad leadership, poor skills, or a lack of education. It is because after African countries became free, they despised the West so much they rejected Liberalism (In the European sense of the word, meaning capitalism, democracy, and secular rule of law) and established authoritarian socialist governments. Socialism, and other illiberal economic systems and tyrannical forms of government, have ensured Africa has stayed poor. Corruption is everywhere in Africa for that reason, and wide-spread corruption is difficult to recover from. The countries that are doing the best are the ones that are beginning to liberalize.
The complexities of the region's geopolitical landscape, marked by historical legacies, economic interests, and political considerations, make the path to democracy a challenging one. While the region seeks new foreign partners, it's critical to remember that democracy can be elusive when intertwined with such intricate factors. France and the EU have deep-rooted connections, yet doubts persist about the extent of these relationships' benefits to the local populace. China's investments, though substantial, bring questions about the terms of their deals and the long-term consequences for the development of the countries involved. Russian security agreements offer an alternative, but understanding their motivations and effects on the region is essential. Adding to these complexities, local politicians may prioritize their own agendas, potentially diverging from the people's needs. This divergence between political interests and the genuine welfare of Sahel's citizens further complicates the region's democratic aspirations. In sum, the Sahel region's pursuit of new partnerships reflects a yearning for change. However, the road to democracy is marked by intricacies that demand careful navigation. Let us hope that amid these challenges, democracy can find its place, fostering sustainable development and improved living conditions for the people of the Sahel.

This delightful misapprehension stands as a light-hearted reflection on the dramatic evolution in our collective approach to the written word. In the scholarly sanctuaries of the late 1980s, our pursuit of knowledge transcended mere data acquisition, embarking instead on a voyage through the realms of critical analysis and hermeneutic exploration. This epoch, though it may now be viewed through a conservative lens, was rich in a tradition of rigorous intellectual discipline, compelling us to engage with texts in a manner that seems almost esoteric in today's digital age. As an individual who has witnessed the transformation of decades, my adherence to the art of intellectual discourse harks back to a time when crafting arguments involved a depth and nuance now rare in our era of tweets and instant gratification. This commitment to complexity in thought and eloquence in articulation, characteristic of an older generation, stands in stark contrast to the concise, often superficial nature of modern digital dialogues. Well the. We found the Permian Basin and fracking
I like Africa a lot but the mineral and energy cards are not going to be the strongest hands to play against the West (the US has all the rare earths, lithium, oil, etc it needs). I think the best hand it can play is it’s robust populations and consumer markets. Africa has very high birth rates and huge populations - access to sell things to those people is the hand to play. There’s no serious dependence on any African resource but access to a booming consumer market is certainly something the economic powers of the US, the EU and China would all love to have
the US does not yet have all the rare earth minerals
but that being said, simply making deeper mining profitable in general, now we have not even scratched the surface of the earth, litterally, if you compare the earth to a goldplated ball, we have not gone deep enough mining to expose the metal beneith the goldplating, we have dug a few holes but those were expensive in their own right and only focussed on drilling.
just saying, anything could happen in this regard, we also recycle many materials pretty well
African minerals are much easier and cheaper to access and thus much more profitable for he companies

It's just more visible in certain places in africa.
@@puraLusa Yea that's true. The goal of a company under capitalism can't be the well being of it's workers or the enviorment. If a company would do that, some other company (with lower moral standards) would just out-compete them.

@@Ganjor420 and the core problem isn't capitalism, that's a mith. Soviet union wasn't capitalist but a whole lake disapeared, people suffered and died inhumanely etc. Pol pot wasn't capitalist, viet congs aren't capitalists, north korea isn't capitalist, cuba and venezuela aren't capitalists.

All countries look for their own interests above the rest. That is understandable.
However those that are smart enough to actually provide something in return and gain better relations with potential partners rather than try to act as the boss of them are the ones that will be preferred in the end as future partners. This is how proper investments work.

Refugees will only come if the west keeps weaponizing climate change to commit genocide against equatorial peoples
A lot can happen in 25 years.
A mean IQ of 73 happened. 🤣
And what is then 🤨??
An Economist made a fail prediction therefore 🤨 what??
This is why a partnership between an African country with democracy and the West = strong. Dictator led African countries partnered with the West = remain underdeveloped and exploited.
Well Africa is a big place some countries in Africa are richer then others and we've seen countries rise and fall in the last 50 years. I would imagine this pattern will continue and a handful of African nations will eventually be wat richer then most. The problem is two fold security and property rights so African nations need to find ways to balance these two things if they want to grow.

I see a lot of “under new management” jokes, which is exactly the mistake many western commentators make about the situation.
When you have only one supplier for vital infrastructure, and that supplier is a recent imperial power that “granted independence “ to you without conflict, especially if that power had always ruled indirectly even before said independence, you are in a terrible bargaining position.

one could ask why the US or Europe didn't have an issue with people stealing from these in the 19th century and maybe there were issues there as well but today a simple anklegrinder is enough to cut trough sections of rail, a rubber handled pair of steel cutting shears is all that is needed to snip cables, which can then just be burned and sold for steel and copper,

I understand but on the colonial conduct I have to defend Belgium despite being Flemish first and foremost
What you are speaking about is "freestate congo" essentially this was leopold II's personal possesion, he was both "king of the Belgians" and "king of Congo"
the atrocities happened under him and these were a case of laisez faire atrocities, "bullets for hands" the force publique was 95% African natives (from outside of congo mostly) they cut people's hands of so they could hunt but that doesn't excuse the colonial authorities or the corporations there because this colony was granted to him on the condition that it would be open to exploitation by any corporation that wished to invest in doing so.
eventually he was forced to give it up, global pressure played some part but mainly pressure in Belgium itsself, Flemish nationalists played on the shared repression, french speakers played on the need to take the colony out of royal hands, in the end (the brittish and french hoped they could get it by the way) it passed into the hands of the Belgian government in 1908, from then on until the 1960s it was one of the better colonies, treasuries were split immediatly and the exploitation and paternalism continued, but the major abuses were ended right then and there.
today the DRC has a lower standard of living than it did in the 1920s, Belgium wanted to mend the immage freestate congo left behind but never really managed to do so. the Belgian secret service was also involved in the murder of the first congolese prime minister together with the CIA as he was moving into the soviet sphere of influence, after that they themselves were kicked out by mobutu taking over and swiftly nationalising l'union miniere haute katanga and from there on out the state has been in a perpetual downward spiral

If US and French governments felt that the nations of the Sahel could handle security in that region, they would have left long before the recent coups.

I know that things are not much better in many area's there, but in truth our "good intentions" were just giving the child a name, corporations, elites,... they wanted those ressources,

There is also a memorial in San Francisco for the
hundreds of Russian sailors who came off their Asiatic fleet ships that died while helping the city put out a fire that threatened to lay waste to it during the War.
The Russian fleet also threatened to Shell Australian ports along with other British Pacific Colonies if Britain aided the Confederates. A confederate war ship spent a lot of time in Australian waters and was supported by the Australian public, some even signing on as crew members. This Confederate war ship laid waist to the US Pacific whaling fleet and is reported to have fired the last shot in the war
Russia also helped Thailand (Kingdom of Siam) maintain its sovereignty from being completely Partitioned/Annexed from the British and French around the same time. The very word Thai (ไทย) means 'free man' in the Thai language which is partially to thank to the Russians as they might have ended up being a colony or part of another country/colony if not for their intervention.
Not really since Russiaan empire just suffered from Crimean war
Russia saved Europe, America, Africa and Asia numerous times it's sad the western media views them as the villain

Also western energy and resource companies steal in these countries and Western govts look the other way because it benefits their countries. Such as Nigeria oil theft by foreign militaries and unmarked tankers

Lack of literacy and critical thinking hinders any democratic efforts.
