They steer the worms by pulling back the scales which exposes the soft inner flesh to the corse sand. This causes the worm to turn and rotate so the exposed flesh is at the top, thus minimizing any irritation.
I love it when people try to explain the plot of Dune cause it all sounds so ridiculous even though its so amazing when you read/watch it😆 Its sandworm “bile” btw🤙🏻
So in the book they actually can steer the worms with the 2 tiny little hooks. When they pull the ring segments open the worm won’t go under the sand because they don’t want sand inside those segments. So if they wanted the worm to turn they move down the rings and the worm will turn. Usually they’ll ride the worms to exhaustion so it’s easy to dismount them because they become placid then. In the book they do explain it’s harder to get off if the worm isn’t ridden to exhaustion. 💜
Generally they only choose worm for transportation if they want to go long distances. They often refer to “20 thumper journeys”. Usually they wouldn’t summon a worm just to ride a few blocks.
Dune is not for everyone, so props for reading it. I admit I was never a fan (I read the first book and that was enough). It is very weird but admit this version kind of figured out how to do it where people are not hopelessly lost, which is what sunk the first one in the 1980's. The visuals are amazing and I actually could get what it was about just from watching the movie, which is a huge accomplishment.
I just got home from watching Dune, and I had the same question as Nick about how they get OFF of the freaking sandworms once they reach their destination.
Well, Timothee stated in a recent interview that "Tim-O-Tay" is actually the correct pronunciation. But he just goes along with the rest of the world calling him "Timothy".
They live in the sietches like we saw in the movie, their lives are mostly survival, the desert leaves little else for them. They're a warrior people, so they train both males and females survival and fighting young. This is what's given in the books so you see how necessary a green world is to make their lives easier, better. The books, like history, focus on the royals and nobles, and pay pittance to the proles, but know the Fremen are great and noble people. I'm personally not a fan of the films, so I'm not defending it. On and David Lynch's shield is kinda cool, there's footage where someone put the old shields in the 2021 movie and it's looked great.
I saw this yesterday at a late night showing, waited for months for it to come out. I was super excited, only to fall asleep during some parts bc im just getting over bronchitis 😂 I'll definitely go again bc the cast and score/ sound were impeccable Thanks again, Nick & Joseph. 😊
I fell asleep after a long day. I woke up in time to see Paul and Freyd fighting, but missed Anya Taylor-Joy. I'm not gonna try and watch it again. It's stunning, but if it was an hour less and I could hear what most of what was said, I would.
Little known fact : In the books, "the spice" is actually blue. It is mentioned in the book, God Emperor of Dune. Edit : Some literature say it's brown but it glows blue.
You guys are amazing. I have been waiting 2 weeks for this review from you and your Spoiler Review is the best one I could find in two weeks on TH-cam. Thank you.
Thanks for the review, guys! I felt a sense of detachment initially after Dune 1, but it improved on a second viewing! I think these movies need to be rewatched. Dune 2 was a great experience with standout moments like the gladiator fight and the Harkonnen storyline, and I wanted less of Paul/Chani, and more focus on the female characters too, like Joseph :)
Thanks, now the "soap opera" side - helps anchor the many 'themes' of this plot! The 'spectacle' did not distract your attention to 'questioning' the *purpose* of this pursuit! *But* meanwhile, Messiah or no Messiah, he does end up killing his grandfather...
It was incredibly frustrating to hear this misinterpretation. She also is clearly falling for him throughout the whole first part of the film where she’s being stand-offish. She was developing feelings and was pushing him away.
Nick and Joseph you guys need to have a baby. Maybe he or she will be the messiah. LOL! Joseph you are already a Joseph. Nick would make an excellent Virgin Mary equivalent. Of course Sigourney Weaver will be the Goddess.
The sandworms have scales, when the Fremen jump on the sandworms, they pull up the scales with hooks, causing irritation to the sandworms. The Fremen control the sandworms, by how much they pull up on the scales. You are supposed to feel empty, because the profit has no cloths.
Joseph you make a good point of not getting a sense of life in Arrakis, as in what they are fighting for in Arrakis, i guess mainly its because most movies or stories with strong Orthodox themes as subject matter turn to shape characters the same, i mean fremens in Dune hardly ever show range of individualism, they come across as the same, therefore limiting us to how they react to their surroundings, Love ur review guys and i Love the movie
I have not seen Dune 2 yet... I wanted to hear your reviews first...and as usual... you two never fail... loved the review! I will be seeing the movie....oh and Joseph ...please check out Dune (1984)...you WILL laugh....in fact one of my favorite scenes in the original is when they are rushing into battle and Gurney (Patrick Stewart)....has his dog (a pug) in his arms.
Don't remember the exact quote, but there is a line about the Shai-Hulud figuratively bowing to the messiah. So I wonder if Paul is able to communicate to the sandworm in some way after he drinks the life water.
Y’all know the reverend mother who was dying was in the 1984 version as the bene jesserate* who tested Paul with the box. Just a little tough I thought was cool
I enjoyed it. They spent too much time on Paul learning to fit in with the Fremen and most fights went on too long. In the book this happened over a couple years. They could have just jumped ahead. They completely omitted Count Fenring, a character who was a sterile dead end of the same breeding program. The emperor wanted him to kill Paul after Feyd failed, and Fenring refuses because of the quiet scorn he has felt snd his kinship with Paul. Thufir is completely absent. In the book, Alia, the little sister is a small child and poisons the Baron. The people kill Rabban(Batista) rather than Gurney(Brolin). The Water of Life is condensed and altered spice excreted from a dead little maker (baby worm). Feyd is Rabban's brother. The plan originally was for Rabban to be very brutal to th locals and when Feyd took control and was less oppressive, the people would love him for being less oppressive.
This movie was amazing I just hate when a movie gets so hyped, the reviews I was hearing for this made me very critical going in but it was amazing but def had lots of holes and def not one of the best movie ever lol
The Friedman actually do in control of the worms when they connect their lead lines to them. As you can see in the movie that they control steering with those lead lines once they're hooked in.
The spice must flow-spice is oil, and presumably (given when he wrote the books) Herbert is interested in critiquing the relationship between the post-1945 imperial USA’s relationship with west Asian states with oil resources in their territories. 🤷♂️
I liked Timothee post water of life but when I saw the shot of him storming into the Fremmen gathering, I kept thinking "It's Fashion Week In Arrakis..." Something about the lighting and the intensity of the strut made me think he was owning the catwalk.
I watched the first film and couldn’t take the lead character seriously when he made that noise when he put his hand in the box. Thanks for explaining the film plot. Great review
I was waiting for this review. I read Dune when I was 15 and as crazy as it may sound I love David Lynch's Dune even though it has obvious problems. The new versions are great, but they have their own short falls. Dune 2 is excellent.
Thank you for the realistic review and rating. I agree with the 3.5/5 rating. Yes, the film looks and sounds spectacular....truly an epic achievement in film-making which I think is somewhat clouding a number of issues with the film. The biggest being the pacing....too much time is spent with Paul in the dessert learning the ways/falling in love/etc. which then made the last half (and especially the last quarter) feel very rushed which is unfortunate as there is far more information to convey in that part of the film. The film was 30 minutes too long, Denis loves to linger on beautiful images and revisit flash-backs/visions (again and again) which obviously looks great but it eats up time and kills momentum and pacing....this was the same issue he had with Blade Runner 2049. There were a number of plot-holes or questionable editing choices where scenes were cut off or not followed through. More micro criticisms....Chalamet under-acts and then over-acts, as an actor he needs to find more of a balance...Zendaya over-did the anger in many scenes, esp the end....Bautista's acting was very poor....Walken was mis-cast and pulled us out of the film.
I really enjoyed the film and actually appreciated them not getting to in the weeds and how everything crashed together in the end. I was actually able to follow along with who was who which for me is saying something lol. I do agree that Walken was dreadfully miscast.
Overall, I really enjoyed the movie and it was a lot better than the first one. I totally agree with you all about Timothee’s performance after he drank the water of life feeling off and almost unbelievable because it was such an abrupt switch from how he was previously.
Lol, sandworm urine. 😂 The film is a master class, but I like the chill perspective. That is fair criticism too about the ordinary life of the Fremen! You do get some depictions, but an extra few minutes seeing the community would have been welcomed.
Omg. Thank you. I echo all your thoughts, and I felt like everyone was just saying this movie was perfect over and over. Timmy T was not intimidating. Space Elvis was great. Boring love story. Wanted more of the witches. They stole the film.
The fourth book, God Emperor is probably one of the weirdest, funniest, and most interesting books I've ever read. Bene Gesserit is a semi homophone for Jesuits.
I haven’t read the books in a bit but it does explain how the books control the worms. By hooking and pulling back the scales you expose these gills or air vents. And while pulled open the cannot submerge back under. And in the movie you see when pulled back there are holes exposed.
With the worms don’t they find getting the sand between their scales painful? That’s why is they have someone riding them the worms will not dive back into the sand and keep the area where the scales are apart as far away from the ground and sand as possible.
David Lynch’s Dune is camp I swear. I actually did a “toe in” of 1984’s Dune! My friend was managing editor of Cinefantastique back in the 80’s so I had a hook up.
I definitely enjoyed this second one more than the first. Although seeing it in IMAX makes a huge difference. I felt way more immersed in the visuals and the world then when I saw the first one on a tiny ass flat screen.
Love the review. What were your thoughts on Austin Butler's accent since he basically copied Stellan's accent and didn't tell Stellan he was going to do that. Also what were your thoughts on the infrared world of geidi prime.
Haven't seen it yet, but I don't care about spoilers for a 60yr old book. I'm here for this couple
Nick please make Joseph watch David Lynch’s Dune & review it !!
So in the book they actually can steer the worms with the 2 tiny little hooks. Nick & Joseph read these above comments! They’re obviously duneheads! 👍🏾 know their stuff.
Hans Zimmer’s score was breathtaking and I was so reminded of Arrival.
May thy knife chip and shatter
May THY knife chip and shatter
They can’t wear protective shields in the desert, because it attracts sandworms.
Yeah it was mentioned by Kynes in the 1st movie when Leto went to see the spice harvesters for himself
And if a lasgun hits it it causes an nuclear explosion
I watched last night and really liked it. Thought Austin Butler was Bill Skarsgard for the whole movie
The shots of the embryo in the whomb were awesome
Dune is not for everyone, so props for reading it. I admit I was never a fan (I read the first book and that was enough). I just got home from watching Dune, and I had the same question as Nick about how they get OFF of the freaking sandworms once they reach their destination.
Joseph, this is Dune and must be taken seriously. Where is Nick (hands on my hips). Thanks once again for making us smile gentlemen.
Thank you, Joseph. "Tim-O-Tay" is now the official pronunciation. Finally there is something amusing about that slender assembly of hair and bones.
Well, Timothee stated in a recent interview that "Tim-O-Tay" is actually the correct pronunciation. But he just goes along with the rest of the world calling him "Timothy".
Some book context about the shields, they attract worms on that planet so you can’t wear them like out and about
"Sand worm piss" 😂😂😂😂 You two are a freaking gift! "Zendaya ...Runs off mad" 😂😂
“This fool is demented” 😂😂😂 You crack me up and we are of the same cloth.
I love y’all. Thank you for covering the movies I love. No matter if I agree with you or not, I appreciate your perspective.
I have been refreshing my TH-cam waiting for this
They live in the sietches like we saw in the movie, their lives are mostly survival, the desert leaves little else for them. On and David Lynch's shield is kinda cool, there's footage where someone put the old shields in the 2021 movie and it's looked great.
Note- Paul Atreides is 15 years old during this period. It might explain, in part, his lack of manliness.
no fucking way
I loved the little pug dog in the original David Lynch movie! So cute that they carry this tiny little dog around with them thru the desert. LOL
“Tim-O-Tay” lmao
🤣
💀💀 I’m dying
Thanks to Nick and Joseph, I call Timothée "Tim-O-Tay" now and I can't see myself calling him anything else. 😄
In his last Jimmy Kimmel interview, Timothee said that's actually the correct pronunciation of his name. @@cajiggle
Was laughing the whole review
I enjoy the enthusiasm people have for this story… people really love it… too much to keep up with for me Terrific review.
Joseph was asleep when Anya Taylor Joy showed up 😂
Me too 🤔
I saw this yesterday at a late night showing, waited for months for it to come out. I was super excited, only to fall asleep during some parts bc im just getting over bronchitis 😂
I'll definitely go again bc the cast and score/ sound were impeccable

Finally a balanced analysis without the silly hype! Thanks!
The water of life is supposably bile if I'm not mistaken.
I think Villeneuve did a good job depicting mounting and steering the worms but not dismounting, which is just as cool.
Little known fact : In the books, "the spice" is actually blue. It is mentioned in the book, God Emperor of Dune.
Edit : Some literature say it's brown but it glows blue.
Austin Butler looks terrifying behind you guys!
You guys are amazing. I have been waiting 2 weeks for this review from you and your Spoiler Review is the best one I could find in two weeks on TH-cam. Thank you.
Yessss was waiting for this review!
Was literally just saying the same thing ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thanks for the review, guys! I felt a sense of detachment initially after Dune 1, but it improved on a second viewing! I think these movies need to be rewatched. She didn’t fall in love with him over night. This movie spans like 6 months. The pregnancy of pauls mom is one way of showing this.
It was incredibly frustrating to hear this misinterpretation. She also is clearly falling for him throughout the whole first part of the film where she’s being stand-offish. She was developing feelings and was pushing him away.
This is my favorite review of this movie hands down!
Raise your hand if you wanted to see “Chobani” slap “Tim o Tay” a second time… the betrayal!! Slap him again and make it count!
“One lil tiny tim-o-tay holding it with two strings” 😂 say that 10 times fast!
I'm going to see it tomorrow, I AM SO EXCITED!!!!!!!!!!
This movie actually sounds so interesting
Dune 2: Tim-o-tay drinks the juice
Nick and Joseph you guys need to have a baby. Maybe he or she will be the messiah. LOL! Joseph you are already a Joseph. Nick would make an excellent Virgin Mary equivalent. Of course Sigourney Weaver will be the Goddess.
Was waiting for this review. Searching for when you guys would take it on. Now I can save myself the trouble😏
"Speaking of 'extracting fluid'..." LOLOL😆
Chalamet a legend for rizzing up Zendaya and Florence
And for giving chlamydia to every girl in his college apparently.
The sandworms have scales, when the Fremen jump on the sandworms, they pull up the scales with hooks, causing irritation to the sandworms. The Fremen control the sandworms, by how much they pull up on the scales.

Give me some of that blue juice. Lol 💙

Your pronunciation of Timothee may be correct, but now I can't get Timotei out of my head! 😂😂 th-cam.com/video/_Y_b1zuEFiI/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared
Don't remember the exact quote, but there is a line about the Shai-Hulud figuratively bowing to the messiah. So I wonder if Paul is able to communicate to the sandworm in some way after he drinks the life water.
have you seen & reviewed the film Cabrini directed by Alejandro Monteverde ? Just saw it , what a surprise, was really good.
You guys have to do a reading of the book where you keep calling Paul Tim O’Tay and Chani, Chobani. 😂
PLEASE REVIEW "Incendies" by Denis Villeneuve. It's his best film in my opinion.
Loved Incendies! One of the first movies I downloaded into a digital collection.
Awesome review, fellas! Also, yall Mea Culpa review was hilarious lol. Watched it twice ❤
Are yall going to review the movie Parallel (2024)?
Y’all know the reverend mother who was dying was in the 1984 version as the bene jesserate* who tested Paul with the box. Just a little tough I thought was cool
Solid 4.9 ❤… stunning, marvelous, also gorgeous.
I love how many scenes of this film are described as “cool” despite being in the desert 😉
I enjoyed it. They spent too much time on Paul learning to fit in with the Fremen and most fights went on too long. In the book this happened over a couple years. They could have just jumped ahead.

Tim-O-Tay got a battery in his back, baby and said I'm THAT guy..boy if you don't sit down somewhere & drink some milk 😂😂
Yay! I was waiting for y'all.

Great review
thanks lads!
Saw it earlier today & loved it! I wish it was another 30 min long ❤
I was waiting for this review. I read Dune when I was 15 and as crazy as it may sound I love David Lynch's Dune even though it has obvious problems. The new versions are great, but they have their own short falls. Dune 2 is excellent.
Hey Nick and Joseph - I hope you saw this in IMAX !!
This "Tim-o-tay" is taking me out 😅
They are fighting for Freedom from exploitation. BUT Joseph had (as usual) a great point. I wouldn’t have minded seeing them living.
Thank you for the realistic review and rating. I agree with the 3.5/5 rating. Felt nothing when Statistics fought Pale Man Group at the end. They had like no relationship.
Wait did I miss the pull quote 👀
This movie is great. Going to see it again. Love you guys.
Dune is OK i guess, but the story for me it's just not sexy. I just get turned-off by the whole body fluids thing and I keep thinking about the smell.
Happy March 🎉 keep up the great content 😃
Thank you!
I learned my lesson about sitting in a 3 hour movie after watching Avatar and Oppenheimer. Never again. I'll wait till it's on HBO.
Chani becomes a baby mama and gets all betrayed and jacked up.
With the worms don’t they find getting the sand between their scales painful?
That’s why is they have someone riding them the worms will not dive back into the sand and keep the area where the scales are apart as far away from the ground and sand as possible.
I was wondering how all the old elderly disabled in children get on the worm as well. How do they get on or off?
I am going to watch Lynch's again then go see this tomorrow. Fun review!
I’m not interested in these dune movies because of timothee so the closest thing to that for me is watching ur review on it
Lil' Austin Butler needs to send Vanessa Hudgen a bouquet of flowers every year he was told that he got the part of Elvis.
David Lynch’s Dune is camp I swear. I actually did a “toe in” of 1984’s Dune! My friend was managing editor of Cinefantastique back in the 80’s so I had a hook up.
One of my childhood friends who also read Dune with me named her daughter Chani. Lordt.
Chile they was drinking Blue Curaçao!
Ciandi (however u spell it) becomes an interesting character once she’s pregnant n I think they have twins? I forget the book.
I read the dune books back in the 70’s. This movie was impressive to me. I also wished they had subtitled Javier. 😂
I definitely enjoyed this second one more than the first. Although seeing it in IMAX makes a huge difference. I felt way more immersed in the visuals and the world then when I saw the first one on a tiny ass flat screen.
Only 3,5 ?! Ok, then it would be nice to have a wrap up video at the end of the year or whatever with the movies you rated 3,5 and above !
Love the review. What were your thoughts on Austin Butler's accent since he basically copied Stellan's accent and didn't tell Stellan he was going to do that. Also what were your thoughts on the infrared world of geidi prime.
