First of all, I am truly amazed by all of the achievements of the whole Angkor Wat’s geometric designs and perfections. Looking at all of those carvings in Angkor,I can imagine how skillful the Khmer stone masons were. The achievements that seem impossible this day and unrivaled. Just incredible...

Short and very valuable coverage on the key elements of the super majestic wonder that is Angkor Wat! Thanks to Smithsonian for highlighting the stories from Hindu epics & puranas that these reliefs/carvings depict. The Hindu history of Angkor Wat is thus undeniable even though King Suryavarman later on converted to Buddhism & added the buddhist elements later on.

Ancient Indian and Ancient Khmer were close friendship since ancient time. Ancient India has relationship with Ancient Khmer through trade and diplomatic relations. Ancient Indian sailors travel to Cambodia and share its belief as Hinduism to the Khmer Empire our Khmer King tolerated and discover Induism as its enlightening religious. Since Induism religion has influence during Khmer Empire . Angkor Wat has some Induism architectural but it doesn’t meant India build the Temple . Angkor Wat its build by Khmer King Suryavarman in the first half of 12th Centuries.

It is such a wonderful history of our Khmer history, however we should not just live in the past. Considering what Khmer used to be in the pre-industrialised time, we should not be what we are now. We should learn our past history and use it as an example to make Cambodia better. We don't need to be big as the past in order to be better, but we need justice, freedom and better economy to drive our country moving forward. Cheers.

There's a lot more to these structures than meets the eye. Etymology suggests nagara which relates to the serpent or like in Europe na peisteanna or priests.

      @@nishan.tmg7 Okay genius.
I don't understand Hindi but I'll provide my response by judging your first comment.
I'm quite aware of Jakarta tales of Buddhism.
However Mahabharata and Ramayana came first. Ramayana was written by Valmiki and Mahabharata by Veda Vyasa. Neither of them were Buddhists. These stories were them adopted by Buddhism and had its own narratives of the same story.
Samudra madhana is strongly and mainly depicted in hindu mythology, not in Buddhism. If so, why it is carved on the walls of Angkor Wat?
In that case what is Vishnu's murti is doing there?
Why many hindu reliefs are still present in Angkor Wat and as well as in many parts of Cambodia?
Dasharata Jataka mentions that Rama was Buddha's previous avatar. Don't believe me? Do your research.
Don't manipulate history and facts, history clearly that the temples was build for Vishnu. Now converted to Buddhist temple. Yet Vishnu is still revered there.
Stop being biased and accept genuine facts and history. Simple as that. Don't be a bigot ya.

Something we’ll use in the future. History repeats itself over and over. This is not carved by hand, these stone works we are not advanced enough to realize yet.

im so sick of these flintstone theories of academic archeology and how taughtless it all sound. these temples was built not carved. these people was not from the stone age. these people were from the bronze age and the temples have been built not carved. they obviously used brick and mortar and printed the patterns on or used tiles that was very common practice in rome and egypt around the time of christ. the angkor wat temple even have depiction of nonhumanoids not human in war with humans.
