I find the video euocentric and not done thoroghly.the impact of hindu culture and hinduism is very obvious but hardly any reference to it.The name of the king is Jai Vardhan clearly hindu name.the researchers should have consulted sanskrit scholars at least I wish Indian universities try and take interest in archaeological research outside India and places with Hindu cultural and religious influences. Then only there will be balanced researh of such places.Praveen Mohan is doing valuable work in this field single handedly .
Hi Praveen, I am surprised to see that you did not contradict the statement made in the documentary that 'most of the temple walls around the capital depict epic battle against the chance (Vietnamese)'. You and anyone, who has knowledge of Ancient Indian culture would exactly know what these depictions are. To top it up, the tourist guides working in these temples are also as ignorant, as I discovered in my excursions to these sites back in 2015. Do not know, if it was intentional on the part of these tourists guides.
Man, imagine being that dude in 1860, chopping through dense jungle and suddenly stumbling upon that vast, long-forgotten temple complex. How surreal that must've been for him! It would feel like you were in a dream or something.
I disagree that the Frenchman discovered it. I think he was the first foreigner to see it but locals knew about the place . I think we need to change statements about discovery of places.
This is how human history is written. Everything is attributed to Western World. It is hypocrisy of developed world. I am pleased that you are expressing this view. Many social theories on ancient world are written to prove European supremacy (e.g. Aryan Invasion theory). With 100+ years of fake literature in vogue many natives and younger generation fail to disbelieve it.
@@datbang5072 Yes, and I find it so insulting! They obviously assume that human ingenuity only became a thing around the 1500s. And before that, the world was a dark chasm of ignorance.
Angkor vat the largest hindu temple in the world , i hope to see this beautiful temple at least once in my life , combodia is a beautiful country too , love from India.
After the Cham people of modern-day Vietnam sacked Angkor in 1177, King Jayavarman VII (reigned 1181-c. 1220) decided that the Hindu gods had failed him. ... Thereafter, Angkor Wat became a Buddhist shrine, and many of its carvings and statues of Hindu deities were replaced by Buddhist art.
I visited Angkor Wat (and all the other surrounding temples) in 2018. Words like "amazing" and "impressive" are not enough to describe it. Whatever you can come up with that a building needs to have to be a true "wonder", Angkor Wat has it. BONUS TIP: I really recommend to visit Cambodia. Friendly people, beautyful interesting country, good food, very pleasant to be in.
Suryavarman was basically a Hindu and he built the structure as a Hindu. This fact need not be obscured by other minor details. Surya+Varma is a combination of two Sanskrit words. But above all,the Hindus have spread their religion and culture through peaceful assimilation among the people of South East Asia as well as Central Asian region along with Buddhists. The trend which everyone must understand is the peaceful syncretic methods adopted by Hindus and Buddhists contrary to any forceful methods. Thus the result produced by such synthesis is the flowering of cultures unique to Cambodia, Thailand,Burma,Laos ,Vietnam ,Indonesia and of course Japan. In fact,Hindu-Buddhist approach gave impetus to and aided local cultures to grow distinctly instead of destroying them . But Ankor Wat remains the one monument of lasting and impressive testimony of the glory of Hindus I'm antiquity. The efforts of the culture-loving French must be lauded . The amount of effort, labour and money they put to restore it is great sans their imperial ambitions ,which is a separate story . Love from India to Cambodia and France.
India and Cambodia have the most detailed amazing stone carving ever. These detailed works look like they would take hundreds of years to construct by hand.True mysteries.

I think this documentary is great, Angkor Wat definitely deserves more global attention. However, I have to admit it surprised me they did not interview any Cambodian experts - I am quite sure they would have a lot to say about their own heritage. It's strange that their choice were only British and French experts.
Uh-oh, conspiracy theory- alert!!!!!! Have you watched the documentary???? Before the arrival of the Europeans NOTHING was known about the site, and the whole place lied in ruins. Only after decades and decades of research and meticulous work provided BY FOREIGNERS, the story has been partially revealed.

We do not use the term Indo China, but this great Hindu architecture went all the way down to Sumatra - which is part of Indonesia. But here in Cambodia the paneling is written in Sanskrit, Khmer, and Thai. It is stunning to visit.
Sorry I've seen this video is a bit late, but why is it surprising that inscriptions were made in Sanskrit on the Angkor ? A rudimentary understanding of Asian history will tell you that Thailand Cambodia Vietnam Indonesia Malaysia were strongly impacted by Indian culture. They had extensive trade relations with India, and the elites had marriage ties as well. The population were all Hindu , including the royals. Buddhism traveled to these parts from India, especially because of the patronage it received from Ashoka and subsequent Maurya and other kings. Jaya Varman, Surya Varman, etc are all Indian names. Theres a reason that part of the world is called Indo China. Because they were influenced either by the Chinese or Indians. Finding Sanskrit on Angkor is as basic as finding English on any monument in the USA or Canada.
what i can guess is, the surprising element could be that they all must have thought its not that old temple. But it was more than a temple, from the time it was impossible (according to archaeologist) to be build with such big population and with such structures. Also, the general thinking that it might be so hidden that it must be impossible for a language from such distant land to be there. Its about what they are seeing and what idea we have of past people. We question how a structure was build in those times of no advance technology, we question how and how much time it took for some knowledge to spread, how merchants knew where was which city or how trade started to that city. Seeing all that, the first question arise is how? So they questioning it without acknowledging other regional history to that much account, its actually not surprising. Also, this question lead to another question, is there account of a monk, messenger, merchant from that side of regions of visiting here? If there are accounts of it, it can lead to different understanding. Hindu culture is still a mystery, even if we say we have Veda and all other religious manuscript. The origin, its influence, its reach, more and more things are mystery, still. Everything is mystery, because its past with not so solid evidence. Angkor Wat falling under a abandon, forgotten city, with advance civilization arise many questions. Questing has nothing to do with India or Hindu religion. It all has to do with HOW? WHEN? BY WHO? WHY? WHAT WAS ITS IMPACT? HOW WERE PEOPLE BEFORE? WHERE THERE MORE RELIGION? WERE THEY CONNECTED SOMEHOW? OR THEY WERE PEOPLE WHO GOT INFLUENCED? WERE THE MIGRANTS? WHY? HOW? WHAT FACTOR FORCED IT? WAS LEAVING THE CITY RELATED TO RELIGION THING? OR NATURE? OR RULER ATTACKS? And many more stuffs, accepting anything just because we know just few stuffs will be a foolish act. Its past. Like, a very good thing mentioned here in this video too, to the chinese traveler, no matter how educated he was, everything outside of his country will be barbaric to him because its difference of view point and understanding. And that has to be taken in account doing any finding in history. society, and many more stuffs. So, nah having the doubt here is not bad. Yes, it ignores regional history of its surrounding. Like you can tell just by the caparisoning here. London is used, not any other surrounding civilization. Of course, london maybe big at that time, yet not giving a comparison from surrounding areas, it can be pretty not good. It can give wrong ideas. Like many times there can be many more big stuffs but people don't know by just comparison done by few western cities and completely ignoring surrounding regional things.
Iman Ghosh This was literally a great documentary on the Khmai people, their empire, war, wealth, A GENOCIDE!! And you got, “ my people started it all, we are number 1..”, lmaoo. Unbelievable
I would have loved to know what the connection is between India and Angkor Wat. The moment I saw the temples I was instantly reminded of the Hindu temples in India and then they not only said they were Hindu temples, they also showed Sanskrit. The distance between India and Cambodia is such that the Hindu temples and practice of that religion along with the Sanskrit inscriptions are quite impressive to me and I would have loved to have known what the connection is there. (I lived in India for a 6 month span of time and was shocked to see their architecture and even root language in Angkor Wat...or vice versa. It definitely peeked my interest.)
It was extended India..undivided hindu lands before the intelligent, scholastic civilization was invaded repeatedly n divided.all.over Asia even Europe ul find Vedic Sanatan
Ankor Wat is similar in design and layout as thousands of temples in India. This mighty complex of Hindu/Buddhist temples was laid out with holy Hindu mountain Meru as the center piece. It is inconceivable that Indian master builders in large numbers were not present during the construction of Ankor Wat. I visited Ankor Wat for 4 days 6 years ago. One cannot build such a vast complex from just books or verbal communication from almost 4600 kilometers away. Many temples have inscriptions in Sanskrit, which is still taught in India. First Hinduism and later Buddhism were spread all over southeast Asia (Myanmar, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Indonesia and Philippines) by Indian merchants and sailors from mainly South India around 600 AD. West and western scholars are only interested in promoting Greek, Italian and Roman architecture. India has some of the most amazing examples of stone carving in the world. Kailasa temple in Ellora, India (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kailasa_Temple,_Ellora) is the largest single piece rock cut temple in the world. it is considered one of the most remarkable cave temples in the world because of its sheer size, architecture and sculptural treatment. In most indian temples, one can also observe the brutality of Turko/Mongol islamic invaders who did their best to destroy these monumental symbols of human achievement. Luckily such fate did not befall Ankor Wat and many Hindu temples all over southeast Asia.
Well their was an old story of how our country came to be(Cambodia) So basically an Indian prince married a Cambodian princess. The telling of the story is more mystical but I’ll just summarize it shortest way possible. Also a lot of our old Cambodian kings are into Buddhism and Hinduism so yea 😚😚
It was the most stunning place I've ever been. Saw it back in 2008. I've seen the great wall, the empire state building, and the pyramids, but nothing compared to the sheer grandeur of Angkor Wat. Much love from Canada.
Savage Rach well it’s obviously a shared culture with ancient India - whether it predates Hinduism is another matter - huge debate right now about the age of the Vedas and who wrote them when etc etc...

Angkor Wat is the ultimate expression of Khmer genius and matched by only a few spots on Earth such as Machu Picchu or Petra. Truly the Kingdom of Wonder. @@imperialkhmer6146 Cambodia's geography played a very big role in the preservation of this and many such temples there. Unlike India, which has suffered a lot due to external enemies, first white Huns then the Muslims and then Christians, they were safe (comparatively) in Cambodia. For complete understanding of this wonderful monument, one must know the historic feats of South Indian Kings Rajaraja and his son Rajendra (from Chola Kingdom) who went on defeating the entire south East Asian nations including today's Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia etc. With their army and naval forces. After winning these states, the Chola Kings used to appoint one of their commanders as the king of the defeated land and promoted their religion and culture. It's westerners and so called archeologists with twisting mindset, gave all incorrect and non factual information only deliberately to erase historical facts. There are numerous TH-cam videos available in Tamil that narrates the wars of the Chola Kings!
I have wanted to see Angkor Wat for decades. I'm old now, and probably will never get to go, but what I've seen in pictures and videos has held me in awe.
you should go, it is basically a national or world park now and there is a comfortable city siam reap and good tourist infrastructure and very good food and hotels .
A truly marvelous piece of architecture, as a 4th generation builder I cannot even imagine the dedication the builders of this place possessed. The concept that it could be lost is just mind boggling but it is truly a blessing that it was found in such an amazing condition and is now preserved to show the abilities and artistry humankind is capable of . Studies suggest that Chinese (Han) especially from Southern China have a great amount of Austronesian blood in them. So your ancestors might migrate to Cambodia but actually never intermix with the Khmer people at all since the Khmer population is quite small. There are more Austronesian people like the Fillipinos, Indonesians, Malaysians, and such than the Austro-Asiatic people such as the Mon, Khmer, Wa, Paulaung, etc.

I don't understand why so many Tamils in the comments think this civilization was built by Tamils. This was a Khmer civilization. Have you seen their statues of kings and Hindu/Buddhist deities? @@Draco.Sapiens lol exactly. They can't distinguish between the adoption of influences from foreigners vs. being ruled by foreigners. By their logic, modern Japan was built by Westerners because Western countries invented skyscrapers, cars, suits, and ties. They completely ignore the native people's own agency in selectively adopting the influences they like, studying them, and creating something totally unique out of them. Now, Japan creates its own cars, sense of fashion, and architecture distinct from the West (they even innovated earthquake-resistant buildings suitable to Japan). Similarly, ancient Southeast Asia had its own architecture and civilization distinct from ancient India's. Angkor Wat and Borobudur are unque to Southeast Asia, being the biggest Hindu and Buddhist temples in the world, respectively. The Makutas worn in Southeast Asia are also bigger and more elaborate than those from India. Like I said, they learned from their influences, but made their own thing, sometimes even outcompeting India in its own game (again, the biggest Hindu and Buddhist temples are from Southeast Asia).

@शिरीष ರಾಮಾಯ Who told you that? That Din e illahi wasn't a religion per se but sort of small cult by Akbar which included only his close friends. As to Delhi Sultanate, they just couldn't even if they tried. Check what Iltutmish said to his clergy when they wanted to force Islam on everyone. Their reach was hardly strong enough beyond urban centres.
How facinating and contrasting to be part of one of richest culture at the time and yet to renounce material wealth to attain spirituality. Two things that stood out to me the most and perhaps are the main higlights of this piece of history; the water channels, great contribition to its community, and the great temples to be rediscovered later! #2022 ❤🧡💛💚💙💜
What's really amazing is some modern scientist from west who have no clue of the regional culture, or historical structures, but crawling around trying to give answers and say they discovered it.
At least they came to restore, protect and study it If they didn't, the jungle would have swallowed up the ruins and people would eventually steal the cool stonework
I studied Angkor wat while working on my arch doctorate in asian architecture. I was intrigued to say the least. I wrote a book called coincidence. Comparing egyptian, south america and Angkor wat. I found imagery simaler to the feathered serpent. Anyways great topic and thanks for posting
Perhaps not a coincidence? Consider the younger dryas pulse 1a and pulse 1b floods of 12 thousand years ago. Megaliths exist all over the world with similar architecture, involving, as well as other things, mortarless polygonal megalithic block work from this time period or even older. Egypt, Peru, even Easter/rapinui Island! How is it even possible? What's the deal? Such an interesting field of study.

There are two forms of Hinduism; the original version practiced in South India and Southeast Asia and the much later "Aryan/Hinduism" with it's grafted on 'killer gods' (Brahma, Shiva, Vishnu ect.), patriarchy, blood sacrifice and the 'color caste system'. The Khmer, who are Black skinned, practiced the 'original version' of Hinduism.

@@pratik1893 That's your story and you're sticking to it, so I'm writing for the other people who will read this post. "Aryan-Hinduism" and "Hinduism" are two different things. Aryan Hinduism is not much different than the other 'killer god religions', like Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, as they all derive from the same source, which is based on the Organizing Principle, "Collective Antipathy for All Spirits based on Limiting Perception of the One Law". Its primary tools are; White Supremacy, Patriarchy, killer god religions and ideologies (with their concept of 'Chosen and Not Chosen' People), Empire, Genocide, Ritualized Child Abuse, Avarice, and Constant Warfare. The 'religion' practiced by the Khmer, who are Black, is similar to that practiced by 'South Indians', not the Aryan-Hindus. That means WITHOUT White Supremacy, Patriarchy, and blood sacrifice. THERE IS ONE MORE LITTLE KNOWN FACT FOR "LOW VIBRATING SPIRITS" LIKE YOU TO CONSIDER: THE END OF ARYAN/HINDUISM - Mahabharata 3.188 - Describes the period of total disruption at the end of the Kali Age (NOW) "...And this perverted world shall be upside down: at the dissolution of the yuga (people) will venerate ukas (Stupas) and abandon our gods. ´Sudras will not serve the Brahmins..." Hopefully, people like you will 'voluntarily' reconsider your evil ways (although I doubt it) OR as it has been written, Great Spirits like Chandragupta and Ashoka Maurya will AGAIN COMPEL you to. The key to the "Next Level of Civilization" is the RE-ESTABLISHMENT of the "Primordial Organizing Principle": COLLECTIVE EMPATHY FOR ALL SPIRITS based on EXPANDED PERCEPTION OF THE ONE LAW.
Stupid western historian dnt have any proof to support Aryan invasion theory... In fact you people dnt know anything about Ancient Bharat.. People from all regions were migrating to Bharat as it was the wealthiest scientific highly advanced civilization.. When Sanatanis in Bharat were using highly advanced technologies like telecommunications (proof found in combodia and many other regions of Bharat),and many more. And at that time people in west were using primitive tools 😂 were not able to even communicate, Greeks,Vikings,Persians, and many more people of this communities came to Bharat learned our texts and copy pasted our god's as their gods(Indra as zeus, thor and many more examples)and whatever I ma talking is archeological evidenced based. Jai Shree Ram 🚩🚩
You have omitted the Hindu connection, except for the sanskrit language, no mention of Hindu cultural influences and the connection to other great Hindu temple building cultures, both prior and contemporaneous. The king deity is a simplistic hierarchical perception of the culture... it is likely the common people were very religious and spiritual, but the change to a Buddhist culture may have disconnected the culture from its Hindu source...
@Khun Ka Mariang when did anyone say about claiming Cambodia? Half of the people here might not even know where Cambodia is, or at least they really don't care about it. I truly believe we underestimate the complexity of our own history. I’m absolutely not saying aliens were involved or anything “magical” or supernatural like that, but even more beautifully our ancestors generational dedication to creating beautiful works like this and other wonderful examples of artwork or architecture rivaling or surpassing some our most beautiful and complex modern works. The lost technology and knowledge of our ancestors is the one thing I wish I could have a chance to see or experience. It’s humbling to realize each person had a life as full and complex as our own, and our own life and world we “arrive in” is the result of tens of thousands of years of progress, built upon the lives of billions of individuals who came before us. Quite a beautiful thing to be alive, and better yet at a time of vast knowledge and understanding of our current place in this reality and the immense ability to explore what is still unknown with the assistance of the hundreds of generations of collective experienced of those who came before us.
Magnificent, if only our governments would be honest and tell us the true history of our world, which goes back many hundreds of thousands of years. The technology even surpasses hours all you have to do is look at the finished product, all over the world there are gigantic structures which mainstream archaeologist cannot explain, so they stick to the status quo, most unfortunate , however great Post.
It's part of our modern arrogance to assume that people of earlier times were stupid. Truth is, they were just as intelligent as we are. The only difference is the size of our collected knowledge. What people don't stop to think about is how much knowledge and technology has been forgotten.

Hi Praveen, I am surprised to see that you did not contradict the statement made in the documentary that 'most of the temple walls around the capital depict epic battle against the chance (Vietnamese)'. @@shankarkumaran4346 Cambodia and India were both Hindu then. And yes, we share some culture till nowadays.
It's not about india, but religion...
@@veritasr6836 And the religion Hinduism is Indian. So basically it's the influence of India.
what i can guess is, the surprising element could be that they all must have thought its not that old temple.
Like many times there can be many more big stuffs but people don't know by just comparison done by few western cities and completely ignoring surrounding regional things.
uhh the population weren't all hindu lol.

Did you know the Khmer empire also built an impressive and massive temple complex on top of the mountain that is 600 years older than Machu Picchu? The wealth of the Khmer empire that time to build so many grand monuments is probably unprecedented until the Industrial revolution.
@@imperialkhmer6146 Cambodia's geography played a very big role in the preservation of this and many such temples there. Unlike India, which has suffered a lot due to external enemies, first white Huns then the Muslims and then Christians, they were safe (comparatively) in Cambodia. If Muslims had attacked Cambodia back then, sadly none of the Hindu old architecture had survived just like in Northern India.

I am from the Horn of Africa but I am so amazed by this so fascinating and rich history of ancient city. And I am wondering how a single video instantly changed my view on Cambodia.
It's amazing and the same thing with the United States. As a Black person, in AmeriKKKa, I KNOW that the story of what happened to US needs to be told!!!! White folks & some Black & brown don't want the story told! It is painful!!! Blacks couldn't even VOTE until the 1960s!!! So much WRONG has been done to us and is still being done today! People who want race theory taught in schools, simply want children to be educated and use their power, which we have! I KNOW that I have so many advantages that my ancestors didn't have and I question what I'm doing with it??!!! To whom much has been given, much is required!

It does have a huge rep. In fact, tourism may be the death of it. More and more people now go to it than ever before, their feet running over ancient rock. And we're heavier than ever now too.
To some it's not a sacred spot and I know they pillage and put graffiti up to say they were there. So, I hope these ancient places will limit tourism to students of history and archaeology and preservationists. As for the rest of us, we can watch videos.

As the video goes by, I end up speechless, I have nothing left but full of ideas and consciousness that it went to the point that I can’t express myself. This is enormous! I remember when I was a kid 5-10 year old, I didn’t know how much this masterpiece means but now, my eyes are bleeding with tremendously feeling such as being mysticism. I’m so proud and feel lucky to see this at this moment of time. Even tough I’m french Khmers, I would say that this is what I’m proud at of being CAMBODIAN !
You're not alone. I grew up in Phnom Penh. I was about 13 years old and had a chance to visit the sites with my family back in 1969 before the civil war was erupted. Most of my family members did not survive the genocide during Pol Pot. Cheers from Khmer in the US!
@@haroldmorris5901 lol Aryan invasion theory is a western theory to satisfy thier agenda sanatan dharma(Hinduism)is way more older and continuous dharma...
There was no caste or religion until last 70 years when western stupid scholars translates dharma as religion and varna as caste..
In India too there were PPL like Babasaheb Ambedkar who were uneducated and know nothing about sanatan dharma...

´Sudras will not serve the Brahmins..."
Hopefully, people like you will 'voluntarily' reconsider your evil ways (although I doubt it) OR as it has been written, Great Spirits like Chandragupta and Ashoka Maurya will AGAIN COMPEL you to.
And at that time people in west were using primitive tools 😂 were not able to even communicate,
Greeks,Vikings,Persians, and many more people of this communities came to Bharat learned our texts and copy pasted our god's as their gods(Indra as zeus, thor and many more examples)and whatever I ma talking is archeological evidenced based. Jai Shree Ram 🚩🚩

Angkor Wat,the most intricate structural designs ever, for that early era. It was a monumental achievements of the Khmer kings.
It’s the temple inspired from King Raja Raja Cholan from India. This video is flawed.

How much does it cost to stay for 5 days in there?
I am planning a trip.
@Luis fonsi I do not know what it costs these days as I went in 2011. I am currently living in Thailand and plan to go back again after many travel restrictions are lifted. Coiled Steel Given the devastation that was wrought via Pol Pot, your comment is incredibly rude and insensitive.
You have no idea what those people went through or whether they were even able to defend themselves against that regime or not.
As far as his killer squad, why don’t you do some research to learn why they haven’t been brought to justice instead of using it as a way to rag on a poor country with problems your country doesn’t currently have to face? It’s not because you are any better than they are.

The people who built and lived there were spiritually evolved, tapped into a higher state of consciousness
Yes indeed I agree, same with many of the old world structures. Its amazing in any aspect
