      +Graham Jenson All modern bridges sway with the wind. The problem was that bridge was not design to. Hence the nature overcome theme. Hence falling down.

    • @aggieraz
      @aggieraz 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      +Graham Jenson They didn't know about resonance therefore didn't investigate the resonant frequency of the bridge, which happened to be matched by the wind and the rest is history. Thanks to Tacoma Narrows, resonance is something civil engineers learn about quite early.

    • @GrahamJenson
      @GrahamJenson 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +reaz mohmed According to Wikipedia it was not resonant frequency that caused the collapse (which I also was taught) but that the bridge didnt let the wind through the structure, causing lots of force en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tacoma_Narrows_Bridge_(1940)

    Other historians suspect a connection with the kings' adoption of Theravada Buddhism: they were therefore no longer considered "devarajas", and there was no need to erect huge temples to them, or rather to the gods under whose protection they stood. The retreat from the concept of the devaraja may also have led to a loss of royal authority and thereby to a lack of workers. The water-management apparatus also degenerated, meaning that harvests were reduced by floods or drought. While previously three rice harvests per year were possible - a substantial contribution to the prosperity and power of Kambuja - the declining harvests further weakened the empire. Not to mention the Bubonic plague hit around this time. There are a ton of factors to why the Khmer Empire failed and it should lead as an example but it doesn't really represent the effects of climate change that well.

    • @lorraineschilling947
      @lorraineschilling947 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      +Granite I must admit I did find the link between what happened to that civilisation and climate change a bit weak. Floods and droughts may also be caused by inter-annual variations that do not necessarily reflect climate change. Thanks for your further explanations, that was really interesting!

    I'm gonna be pedantic: Khmer is pronounced "k-MAI" in the Khmer language or, for English speakers, kuh-MAIR, because of the roman spelling/American accent. It is never pronounced kemer, as the narrator does here.

    • @MultiJenci
      @MultiJenci 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's not how it's pronounced. English doesn't have the syllable that we use. Therefore, Kuh-mair is as close as they can get! (:

    Just visited Angkor wat, ta prohm and other temples in the Angkor archeological park. In one temple you see huge detailed stone cravings of everyday life of the Khmer people. Merchants selling goods on markets, kids playing with dogs in small alleys, kings and queens watching dance performances. One place was dedicated for huge festivities that could hold up to a million people with a big central stage. Now it’s like you see in the video, a mysterious place reclaimed by the jungle - like from a fairytale. Seriously one of the most incredible things I have ever seen.

    Good video about Khmer Temples. Climate change may be one of many factors that contributed to the decline of my Khmer Empire. We used to learn other factors at school such as war with Thailand and Champa and internal conflict between the Khmer kings that led to the fall of the Khmer empire. Religion change may be another case, but I believe it is highly unlikely due to the fact that Buddhism had been in Cambodia and followed by Khmer Kings in pre and during Angkor period since the 2nd A.D. For example, in the 2nd A.D, the Khmer Capital was located in Phnom Da, Angkor Borey, (Nokor Phnom period) which is now in Takeo province and many stone carvings were found to be written in two languages; Sanskrit and Khmer worshiping both Hindu and Buddhism. The most famous Khmer king, king Jayavaraman the VII was also a Buddhist, yet he built many temples and his compared to his predecessors. His land was also huge. In addition, Bayon is a Buddhist temple that built in the Angkorian period by the Jayavaraman. Well, we will find new things as more information emerges and technologies are advancing. Cheers.
