When will the Cubs Make Matt Shaw Their 3B?

- Matt Shaw has been stellar in Arizona this Spring, and given all of the issues the Cubs have at 3B, Cubs fans are asking when the Cubs will make him their third baseman?

Reminds me of a similar situation in 1982 when the Cubs had a young SS who was blocked by a veteran but there was a need at 3B. He was inserted at 3B as the opening day starter. He’s in the HOF now. Matt Shaw is a far more advanced hitter at this point than that guy… a guy named Ryne Sandberg. Shaw is mature like Ryno was and as athletic as well. While I doubt the Cubs do it, I believe he can handle it.

It is so pertinent for this organizations future sustainable success that shaw gets another 3 to 5 hundred at bats. This way, he can maintain a substantiable contribution towards the world series window the Cubs organization and Craig Counsell are about to Open. An August call up would be nice in the thick of a playoff qualifying run. GO CUBS!!!
I received my ball and hat a couple of days ago! Thank you again for the awesome prize! I was really surprised to find out the ball was in a case and getting a hat along with it! I'll make a post about it soon. Things have been a little busy around here for the last few days.

The thing with Shaw we need to remember is he was drafted out of NCAA, so he may not need as much minor league development. That being said, I really like Shaw and think he is going to be a big piece for the Cubs in the near future, so I hope them don't rush him if he needs a little time.

To be fair, the Angels called up those two so early because Moreno lost his mind trying to convince Ohtani to stay. Neither of those two should have been on the Angels yet.

I think we'll probably see Morel start the season at 3rd. I really wish we had a better option. I really want Morel to get it together at 3rd but I'm not sure he's going to. I think they'll leave Shaw in the minors for a while to get him some more playing time before bringing him up
If Morel can take over 3B, it solves a ton of problems
@SetupManCubs If he can get over his nervousness about it I think he'll do fine. He just seems to lack some confidence to me.
He should be up in September as we have traded away Morel in the summer. We need more pitching which is why we trading Morel for a pitcher. Shaw is a better hitter and fielder by far than Christopher Morel.
Fielder, I assume so. Hitter, there isn’t enough data to make that comparison. So, jury is still out on that

Cubs should have no intention of bringing up Shaw until father's day at the soonest. One 3B option you didn't mention was Bote. I see Wisdom and Mastro traded soon with Morel getting that first third of the season to try to show he's adequate defensively at 3B. If he keeps it to 1 error per 17 chances or less while hitting a HR every 15 PA, then he's fine.
I just don’t know that there is room for Bote. Love him, but the organization never talks about him anymore.
Shaw will eventually be a great Cubs player. No need to rush him.

I think Counsell will have a big say in letting him fully develop in the minors. I don’t see him getting called up until September.
Counsell is going to be so great for these prospects coming up. I truly believe that

Matt shaw in javy type role could be the way. Not related to vid but I think javy full time move to shortstop is what end up messing him up. He could've been next level zobrist

Morel is the starting 3B to start the season. Yes, hes going to make some errors...and, wisdom was much worse both defensively (rated worst in MLB) and offensively (.180 avg is not a pro). Madrigal has no bat, and while a dolid glove, his weak arm costs the cubs too many runners.and has made a few errors in spring, too.
To be fair, Patrick Wisdom hit .205 last year and is a career .214 hitter. But yes, not an everyday guy. Agreed
@@SetupManCubs true, fair, and...he was well below .200 most of the season. I believe it only got above .200 late because he was getting less at bats, after returning from injury/demotion, right? (more ABs for him inevitably equals more and more Ks, unfortunately, and the very concerning sub .300 OBP).
Right now i would rather have Bote over Wisdom.

David Bote has a good shot of making this team and getting a chance to prove he belongs (or hopefully establish trade value). If so, I'd put Wisdom DH, splitting time with Busch or Mervis. I'd give Morel a month or two in the minors to see if he can shape up his defense enough to contribute at 3B. If others fail to hit in April/May and Morel just doesn't show any defensive progress...fine, you bring him up to DH. But it makes me shake my head that he was goofing around in winter ball instead of busting his butt taking infield practice all winter in Arizona. I find it maddening that he and his agent couldn't recognize the neon "help wanted" sign hanging over 3B.
I don’t know where you got the info that he was goofing off, but Morel wants 3B bad. I talk to his interpreter often, and he has been busting his butt.
And I love Bote, but he’s not on the 40 man, so it’s a high hill to climb for him to make the opening day roster
@@SetupManCubs I was being a little flip with the "playing around" comment, but my point is that he was in winter league but playing 1B, DH, etc. Not a lot of work at 3B. So I stand by my opinion--if he *really* wanted the wide-open 3B spot, he should have been taking IF practice 5 hours a day/6 days a week all offseason.
2027. Quit hyping him, give time to develop
2027 is too long. 2025 is a reasonable wait time. But no need to keep him down there til 2027 if he’s productive
