Next time when visiting a Héma in the Netherlands, go to the small hotdog-shop outside, right next to the main entrance! There you must order a "broodje rookworst"! (The correct pronunciation of almost any Dutch word with "oo" in it, is as if it was written with "oa" as in "boat"! "Stroop" is "stroap", "rook" becomes "roak". "Ou" as in "oude" is pronounced as in "outch". 😉👍) The "broodje rookworst" from the Héma is a staple in Dutch streetfood! You can get all kinds of condiments with it, like mustard, ketchup, dried fried onions (which is a killer combo!), but the classic way is with mustard alone... it's heavenly! These "rookworsts" are especially made for Héma and have their own secret recipe. You can buy them inside the store too, in the foodsection. There they are cold and prepackaged. Definitely a "must try"! 🌭😋👍

It's very heartwarming to see German people (and americans!) actually enjoying Dutch food hahaha. As a Dutch person, I always return the favor by taking my Filipino girlfriend to Germany during christmas! German Christmas markets are the best! :D
As someone who lives half an hour drive away from Venlo, and who pretty much spent half his childhood in the Netherlands and grew up on this stuff, I can honestly say that I love dutch food and dutch supermarkets. I always totally pig out during my frequent shopping- and holiday trips across the border 🇩🇪♥️🇳🇱
The same goes the other way around. I grew up near the German border (even had some German friends through hobbies), and i also lived in Germany a couple of years. But only like 200m behind the border, near Wassenberg. I love this video of Utrecht Netherlands. I wouldn’t mind living there because it so beautiful and peaceful especially near the water canal. Thank you Phil and Deana for sharing the perfect day. 🤗🥰
I'm from Utrecht, I was probably paddleboarding on the Oude Gracht that very day! So nice to see bloggers appreciate the city 🤍❤ That little rabbit at the end is Miffy (Nijntje), an Utrecht icon and famous world round! Her label reads: "I'm not for sale!"
We went to Utrecht in March and loved it, but it looks so much more lively in summer! We need to to back, it was my favorite city. A great mix of old town and modern near Tivoli concert hall without feeling like its lost its charm.
The bunny at the end is "Nijntje" or "Miffy" in English. She's the main character in a series of picture books for toddlers. Her creator is called "Dick Bruna" and he's from Utrecht. The little label said "Ik ben niet voor de verkoop", meaning "I am not for sale". Probably because it looks like the employees at the bookstore had sown the yellow book onto her hands (being Dutch and having seen a lot of stuffed "Miffy's", I have never seen one holding a book, usually it's just different fabrics or costumes). Also, frikadellen and kroketten (or bamischijven, kaas soufflés etc.) would be doable to bring home with you on a 3 hour home journey, as long as you put it in the freezer as soon as you get home(I mean, Dutch people are sometimes in a similar situation when combining shopping and grocery shopping if they visit another village or city, then it's not uncommon to have those items being outside of a freezer for 3 hours as well).
I prefer without the cheese, but one with bacon and syrup is really traditional and I love it. If my husband bakes them I always eat a bacon one first and an apple one second.
Best walking advice in the city-center: Along the Oudegracht (main old-canal) from Nijntje Pleintje to Ledig Erf and back, each way on the other side of the canal. And go around (full circle) the old city-center next to the Singel (it has several "streetnames") a nice mix of parks and architecture. If you don't like the long walk and want to shorten it, go towards the Dom-tower, you can see it from everywhere.
That frietje kip is actually kinda fancy looking so it's not a regular dish and for 8 euro's you have a far better option elsewhere: the Kapsalon! A Dutch/Turkish dish with fries and kebab, eventually topped with cheese! Much better!
"it tastes like a supermarket pastry item". It IS a supermarket pastry item if you buy it from HEMA. Mass produced in a factory. Buy them from a bakery or street stall and they're a lot better. Bunny says: "Ich bin nicht zu verkaufen".
You went to Hema was there not peasoup there in the restaurant. I know we are going to sell it again from this monday. Also when you go to HEMA, the thing people come for is the broodje rookworst with either mustard or the vegan HEMA hotdog sauce which is a sweet type of mustard sauce. I saw the appelflap was not propably heated. But yeah eating at HEMA mostly means eating broodje rookworst or pf course the very famous HEMA Tompouce. Greetings a HEMA employee.
Missing out on Hema's 'Rookworst' is a small sin as it is their staple food delight for decades together with their 'Tompous' (although quality has significantly decrease over the years). @ Deana & Phil: Fortunately Hema's can be found all over the country so no excuse to miss these in a replay :) PS: Similar smoked sauge is used in the Dutch 'Snert' and "Erwtensoep' (pea soup) which is very well know soup and generally consumed in the winter months. Definitely one to try as well, if you want to experience our limited real Dutch cuisine.
@@markschattefor6997 I remember the Hema worst from the 60s and 70s and I think its fatness is just the same what has changed is our taste, Dutch people do not like their food that way anymore.
Deswegen verwundert mich Dein Kommentar so. Für mich sah das wie die klassische Touristenfalle aus. Das ist ein Essen, was ich mache wenn ich keine Lust habe zu kochen. Schnell, preisgünstig und lecker.
Hi Deana and Phil, just wanted to so you deserve a lot more viewers/subscribers! It's fun to watch even when living in The Netherlands myself. Have a good day!
Utrecht my city! I live really close to where you've been in the video, and the supermarket you went to at the end is pretty much my regular supermarket. I was just about to go there actually, but I stopped to watch this video! You should really come back in the winter for some traditional erwtensoep met rookworst, it is the best dish to eat when it is freezing outside! Also, did you try a Frikandelbroodje yet? I would say it is a staple food item for a quick lunch grab here. Great video, nice to see Utrecht from your perspective. I think it is the most charming big city in the Netherlands, but Nijmegen is another really nice city if you're looking to visit another!
You guys were in the birth place of Dick Bruna! Founder of Nijntje (or Miffy); the illustrated cute bunny which you met at the end credits ("Ik ben niet voor de verkoop" means "I'm not for sale"). Next to that, it's also the birthplace of Gerrit Rietveld, one of the most famous Dutch architects and designers. The HEMA is indeed more suitable for a quick coffee break. The 'appelflappen' were unfortunately looking very sad and soggy. There are much better ones in a bakery. Glad you enjoyed Utrecht! Keep up the good work in Dusseldorf; I absolutely love that city. Greetings from The Netherlands :)
I've eaten quite a lot at The Oude Muntkelder in the past, nice to see it as the first one featured, and great combo pick. The stroop used to come in jars, too bad it is in bottles now, kinda gives it a different vibe. But i guess it is less messy that way.
You should totally visit Dordrecht! Its a smaller city near Rotterdam, but its so nice. And while you’re there, go to Coffeelicious (for breakfast or lunch). The food there is amazing! My favorite is the chicken panini.
I live in a satellite city of Utrecht. Always a pleasure to cycle to the city centre to meet friends and have a meal or beer with them. Sadly you have missed the mannepis chips. The are the best
De Muntkelder. I went there with my parents every now and then when I was a child (50 years ago) Utrecht is my home town and I reviseted the restaurant with my husband a few years ago. Glad it's still there.❤
Guys next time when you're in town perhaps come by train it's great to drop into the heart of the city that way and you'll arrive so well rested for a nice city trip. Have you heard of Nijntje? or more know as Miffy? well She and her friends were all conceived and brought to life in Utrecht. Winter foods and drinks may be a good time to come back over, perhaps give a shout. Thanks for the lovely video and hope your market shares in Febo are doing well by now ;)
I think the comments weren't clear enough: the hema is known for it's rookworst en it's tompouce. They even have shirts and bags etc of it 😂 And the stroopkoeken I would recommend for next time. I think they are better than stroopwafels.
You are right about Asian food in Dusseldorf. I only visited the city once, but I found the Asian part of the town and I ate a great meal in a Traditional Korean BBQ restaurant and I also found an asian toko that looked small at the outside but was HUGE inside (it expanded in several neighbouring buildings I guess) which had more products than anything I have seen in the Netherlands . I might visit again, it;s just about 1 hour drive from my place.
When I was a kid, I needed to go to a specialist in the hospital in Amsterdam a few times a year and as we had to drive up there from Leeuwarden, my parents would often make a detour to different restaurants on the way back home. We went to one of these on the Utrecht canals pretty often, as they had phenomenal shrimp cocktails 👌👌 Ps. The appelflap you had at the Hema didn't look the best either 😅 our local bakery has them too and they are superb, very light crispy pastry, sugar crystals on top and perfectly baked apples on the inside 👌
If you guys decide to visit our little country during winter time, make sure you pass by a food truck that will literally be scattered everywhere in each city and towns. They will most likely be selling something we call oliebollen (we say it like OhLeeBollen).
Next time at Hema try the tompouce. Bit disappointed you didn't get a broodje Mario. When you in the street trying the enjoying the kip burger from Febo. You were very close to a Belgian style pub in an old church. Not the same as the pub called België. That has over a hundred different types of beer.
Febo stands for FErdinand BOl, the person who invented it and also there is a street here in Amsterdam called Ferdinand Bolstraat, that is close to the biggest daily market; Albert Cuyp
Few more new options for veg Smullers in the Central station Flfl And stands that pop up during lunch on weekdays ...and Utrecht being a city of offices ..lunches on street are busy
Ah, my hometown. As others already mentioned, you missed the item that made HEMA the place to go... their famous Rookworst. Half a warm rookworst in a tiny paper bag. It has been a Dutch classic since 1936. In many countries kids go shopping with their parents and if they behave they might get icecream or McDonalds, we would get a Hema Rookworst (and it would be the highlight of the day) As kids dom we made "weird acronims" of the names of companies. The original meaning of HEMA is "Hollandse Eenheidsprijzen Maatschappij Amsterdam" (Hollandsche Unitary Prizes Company Amsterdam) but we made that into Hier Eet Men Afval (one eats garbage here) Soup: the Dutch classics are Tomato, Vegetable, Snert (thick split pea soup, a wintersoup), Bruine Bonen soep (Brown bean soup, also a wintersoup), Ossenstaart (oxtail) , Koninginnensoep (queens soep) and "Hungarian Goulash Soup"
You know Vla is an dessert. You put it in a bowl and eat it with a spoon. You could add slagroom or mix it with yoghurt. My dad had his own vla recipe where he would add strawberry jam, raisins and current (aalbes) to his vla.
@@DeanaandPhil I sure will! And dont worry google did this time🤣🤣🤣🤣 (By the way you guys should try the Hema rookworst wich is a delicious smoked sausage i get it almost every week)
Only traditional Dutch food in this video was the pancake. - Next time get the Hema broodje Rookworst with mustard. (Smokey sausage on a bun with mustard delicious) - A Herring with pickles and onion. (Salted raw fish, my favorite) - Kibbeling at a good stall that has his own made ravigotte sauce. (If you find the right place this is the best battered fish you'll ever have) - Hutspot, Stampot andijvie or Stampot Boerenkool. (Most Dutch families eat one of these 3 at least once a week during autumn and winter, boerenkool is mostly eaten in winter) - And an uitsmijter. (cheese, ham and eggs sunny side up on a piece of toast)
Thank you for another great video. Your content is always a pleasure to watch. The food looks fantastic, but please. When sour cream or olive oil is added on the top of a dish, you are not supposed to mix it in. They could easily have done that in the kitchen. The added layer is to make a sensation of contrast when eating. Pleas try again, without mixing, and you will have another greater experience.
I used to live there! was funny to see it from a new perspective. I can't believe you didn't get rookworst from Hema! Usually when me and my friend go shopping we'll stop there for lunch and get sausage pastries and tomato soup and a pastry as well as a hot drink, I've never even seen that french fry dish
It's Héma (heyma), not Hèma.. And yes, Utrecht is unique with it's canal-sided restaurants because of the old lower cellars converted (not to be found in places like Amsterdam)..
Hi D&P. Maybe a late reaction, but VLA also comes in other flavoures then VANILLA, like HOPJES and CHOCOLATE. In most of the dutch supermarkets there are also small portions of dessert aviable based on vla (even from a german brand named EHRMANN). Keep up the good work ! I'm always curious to see your next clip. -😘😇-
Regarding the tomato soup, the "parsley" was actually Thyme, and the fact that it was chunky does not make it like a Bolognese, which is a meat-dominant sauce with three times as much meat as tomato. I love the Netherlands and parts of Germany are beautiful or exceptionally cosmopolitan, but when it comes to food, there's a reason many people from Northern Europe venture south -- the food along the Mediterranean is so much better, fresher and vibrant. Thanks for showing us Utrecht, which is beautiful.
The Kaassoufle are dangerous if you don't know what to expect. When freshly baked the molten cheese can severely burn your mouth. Hema is a quintessential dutch warehouse. Though for many people it's odd to see undergarments sold alongside with towels, electronics and food items. Though a classic from Hema as pointed out by some are the sausages (rookworst) but also the tompouce. Definitely a hassle to eat them properly but good tasting.
Pannenkoeken 😃 i like that restaurant at the canal. Have been there too 😊 Utrecht is gezellig. The canals and the werfkelders is a must. It is unique. At Hema i actually never eat there 😅 and not all Hema's have restaurants. Most of them do no have a restaurant. I feel as dutch person others have been misleading about it. Mostly people by bread with a sausage in it add mosterd or ketchup i dunno some sauce and they buy tompouce. But i find the food medium quality.. i do love the products in the Hema store ❤ Love soep and yes erwtensoep is dutch and in the winter. I actually never go to febo 😅 i prefer a cafetaria and they prepare it in front of me. I love stroopkoek it is more crunchy. Cool video! 😊 O yeah Haring is very dutch. My dads says you need to it without unions.
I've never been to the Netherlands (I'm Australian) but I've visited Indonesia and tried Rijsttafel. I also had a Dutch housemate who used to cook a dish she called Hunde posse (or something like that - I don't know the spelling but it literally translates as Dog's Dinner. Both were delicious.
We know that idiom, but it’s not the name of a dish.. If you come home and find “de hond in de pot” you can get any leftover, if you’re lucky there’s something left in the pot.
You should really try pepernoten (kruidnoten) next time you are here. They are only widely available from October to January. They are pertty similar to speculaas only way smaller, crunchier and optionally covered with chocolate or other stuff.
You need to go to the netherlands on 5 december because then There is a holiday called Sinterklaas. Like Christmas but not really. You should try pepernoten en taai taai
Oh nooo at hema you only eat the sandwiches or coffee&pie (especially tompouce) & 'to go' people take the 'rookworst' broodjes (hotdog). Love the video though! 🌞
And again, such a nice video ❤ Presented so tasty that it makes me hungry 🤣 And if you are looking for a tasty dressing on a salad/sandwich...try the Hela; Honey mustard dressing😋
0:39 I never ordered pancakes in a restaurant, but I like them homemade. A cheap, fast and easy meal. I usually make savory ones with bacon and maple syrup (no cheese though) and sweet ones with just marmelade/ jam on top. I eat 3-4 for a whole meal and it costs me what? 3-4€ at the most. You paid 13-15€ for a single one? What the eff!

HMMMM never heard the " Niederlandering" I was always told it is " Hollaenderin ".
Deswegen verwundert mich Dein Kommentar so. Für mich sah das wie die klassische Touristenfalle aus. Das ist ein Essen, was ich mache wenn ich keine Lust habe zu kochen. Schnell, preisgünstig und lecker.
@@memories511Holland is a province, The Netherlands is the whole country.
@@lumieredeux you believe what you want, I believe what I want and I think you are full of prunes.
@@memories511I don’t know about the prunes, but Utrecht is most definitely not in Holland. ;)
Greetings from The Netherlands :)
that kinda looks like the rivverwalk in texas minus the bikes no wonder its a popular tourist spot probably reminds the europeans of their home
I stopped in Utrecht to visit the Railway Museum in June. It was quite a nice city.
I've eaten quite a lot at The Oude Muntkelder in the past, nice to see it as the first one featured,
and great combo pick.
15:20 It’s funny that you always go to the supermarket when you come to Holland. I do exactly the same thing when I go to Germany
Thanks for the lovely video and hope your market shares in Febo are doing well by now ;)
Maastricht and/or Valkenburg area bike tour next? Have fun!
This brings back memories of our Dutch neighbours who made those pancakes. So long ago now. I loved them, yum.
For the next one, try to visit an ‘Amazing Oriental’ supermarket.
Maybe fun to do a comparison with what you got in Düsseldorf.
Amazing Oriental has expanded into Germany. There it is called "Go Asia". At least in Berlin there are a number of them.
I think the comments weren't clear enough: the hema is known for it's rookworst en it's tompouce. They even have shirts and bags etc of it 😂
And the stroopkoeken I would recommend for next time.
Nice that you visited my city! Born and raised in Utrecht. ☺ I hope you enjoyed it there! Be welcome always!
When I was a kid, I needed to go to a specialist in the hospital in Amsterdam a few times a year and as we had to drive up there from Leeuwarden, my parents would often make a detour to different restaurants on the way back home. We went to one of these on the Utrecht canals pretty often, as they had phenomenal shrimp cocktails 👌👌
Ps. The appelflap you had at the Hema didn't look the best either 😅 our local bakery has them too and they are superb, very light crispy pastry, sugar crystals on top and perfectly baked apples on the inside 👌
Well ik mis he home food iam from Holland move to Canada 37 years ago jammy food love it thank you for the for the walk
Hema is famous for its 'rookworst' and 'Tompoucen' thats also typical dutch.
The pancake restaurant i went there in 2001 a couple of times with my first girlfriend, she lived not so far from Utrecht at that time
This city look so good. I never heard about it!!
Utrecht is amazing :))
The pancake looks between a pancake and a crepe. Looks pretty good! 👍🏻👍🏻🙏🏻✌🏻
I love people eating new foods.
please do not promote Utrecht. Let's keep the tourists and expats concentrated in Amsterdam, so the rest of us can have some peace and quiet.
If you guys decide to visit our little country during winter time, make sure you pass by a food truck that will literally be scattered everywhere in each city and towns. They will most likely be selling something we call oliebollen (we say it like OhLeeBollen).
I always put the schenkstroop on the bacon pancakes... love it so much!
I don't care how good it is. 7 euro's for a carton cup of tomato soup is a complete ripoff.
That’s prety low actually.
It sure is a seriously beautiful city. I could sit by the water all day long myself (and eat).
Few more new options for veg
Smullers in the Central station
Flfl
And stands that pop up during lunch on weekdays ...and Utrecht being a city of offices ..lunches on street are busy
hey you missed the real classics of Utrecht: Vockingworst, Appelbol, Utrechtse spritsen en broodje Mario!
Ah, my hometown. As others already mentioned, you missed the item that made HEMA the place to go... their famous Rookworst. Half a warm rookworst in a tiny paper bag. It has been a Dutch classic since 1936. In many countries kids go shopping with their parents and if they behave they might get icecream or McDonalds, we would get a Hema Rookworst (and it would be the highlight of the day)
As kids dom we made "weird acronims" of the names of companies. The original meaning of HEMA is "Hollandse Eenheidsprijzen Maatschappij Amsterdam" (Hollandsche Unitary Prizes Company Amsterdam) but we made that into Hier Eet Men Afval (one eats garbage here)
Soup: the Dutch classics are Tomato, Vegetable, Snert (thick split pea soup, a wintersoup), Bruine Bonen soep (Brown bean soup, also a wintersoup), Ossenstaart (oxtail) , Koninginnensoep (queens soep) and "Hungarian Goulash Soup"
You know Vla is an dessert. You put it in a bowl and eat it with a spoon. You could add slagroom or mix it with yoghurt.
My dad had his own vla recipe where he would add strawberry jam, raisins and current (aalbes) to his vla.
Hey Phil and Deana, thats my old city. I hope you had a good time.
Ohhhh it's a beautiful city! Would you say it's romantic?
@@DeanaandPhil Yeah, especially during the evening/night. The whole city lights up.
I love your videos me personally im also from the Netherlands you guys are so cute and also ''nog een goed weekend he!''
Dankjewel! Wij hopen dat je dit weekend iets lekkers eet!
(Smokey sausage on a bun with mustard delicious)
- A Herring with pickles and onion. (Salted raw fish, my favorite)
- Kibbeling at a good stall that has his own made ravigotte sauce. (If you find the right place this is the best battered fish you'll ever have)
- Hutspot, Stampot andijvie or Stampot Boerenkool. (Most Dutch families eat one of these 3 at least once a week during autumn and winter, boerenkool is mostly eaten in winter)
- And an uitsmijter.
Great!! Did you guys went trough de indoor big mall?? There are also lots of shops
Ouch that wooden spoon gave me goosebumps all over my body!😄🥶 love your guys.
It's Héma (heyma), not Hèma.. And yes, Utrecht is unique with it's canal-sided restaurants because of the old lower cellars converted (not to be found in places like Amsterdam)..
I study at Utrecht and I love the city a lot. Also, my cousin actually works at soup-er haha although I've never been there myself
Phil should try the Slagroomvla (sahne-vla) at some point. It's extra rich and flavorful. Definitely don't have too much!
How could you go to Utreg and Miss BROODJE MARIO…meine gute
Glad how much you guys love the city i lived in ❤
The Kaassoufle are dangerous if you don't know what to expect.
I’m not one to comment much and I like you guys a lot BUT!!!! The Netherlands 🇳🇱 ROMANTIC???? 🤣🤣 you made your audience laugh! Hard!!
But i find the food medium quality.. i do love the products in the Hema store ❤
Love soep and yes erwtensoep is dutch and in the winter. I actually never go to febo 😅 i prefer a cafetaria and they prepare it in front of me.
I love stroopkoek it is more crunchy. Cool video! 😊
O yeah Haring is very dutch. My dads says you need to it without unions.
lovely to see you both in my city, but you missed out on so many Utrecht classics 😢
In Dutch we calling it Hondenpot (Dogs Dinner). It's a meal with different ingredients (leftovers). Hunde posse is German and means owning dogs.
I'm Dutch and I've never heard about Hondenpot. I think she made the famous Hutspot! @@AdvdW
From the idiom 'to find the dog in the pot', to arrive at dinner too late.
We know that idiom, but it’s not the name of a dish.. If you come home and find “de hond in de pot” you can get any leftover, if you’re lucky there’s something left in the pot.
@@Ballonsan It is like you find the dog licking the bowl clean.
You should try gehaktballen, and if you could go during winter -> stampot
You should really try pepernoten (kruidnoten) next time you are here. They are only widely available from October to January. They are pertty similar to speculaas only way smaller, crunchier and optionally covered with chocolate or other stuff.
How different those canals would be in Sitges, Catalonia
You need to go to the netherlands on 5 december because then There is a holiday called Sinterklaas. Like Christmas but not really. You should try pepernoten en taai taai
Not on the day but mainly the weekends just before the 5th
From the febo you need to try speciaaltje meat onion snack dripping grease it is delicious
The peasoup is a delicious dish when the temperature drops. around 5 degrees or when it is freezing it tastes the best :D
hi deana and phil have a nice weekend
Thank you, Bianca! Hope you eat something yummy this weekend!
@@DeanaandPhil Thank you i will eat something yummy this weekend ❤
Hi, i like the vids a lot :) You bought Kokki Djawa boemboe in the AH. The Ajam Pedis and the Rendang are really good. Buy them while you can
Oh nooo at hema you only eat the sandwiches or coffee&pie (especially tompouce) & 'to go' people take the 'rookworst' broodjes (hotdog). Love the video though! 🌞
Pancake was good. You should use regular stroop with it.
Appelflap. They sold you the wordt from the oven.
And again, such a nice video ❤ Presented so tasty that it makes me hungry 🤣 And if you are looking for a tasty dressing on a salad/sandwich...try the Hela; Honey mustard dressing😋
Next time in the supermarket, you should get the Unox Erwtensoep (the authentic Dutch peasoup) With rookworst in it!
