    Mario is an icon in Utrecht. When I studied there in 2005, his broodjeswinkel was the most popular one, by far.
    Once, I had to stand in line for nearly an hour for a sandwich, because there were just so many people waiting in line...

    I am a big fan of the Broodje Mario. During the time I lived in Utereg (the proper spelling according to people who actually live there) broodje Mario was the most popular vendor of these kind of sandwiches and Broodje Ben didn’t exist yet. Mario should not be bought at the corner vending stand near the Lange viestraat but at the bakery where you guys were. Then the roll is still warm. Always order with extra peppers, that really makes it a sandwich to come back for.

    I must have had a ton of broodje Mario back in the days during my studies. I lived close by and I just couldn't pass the stand without having one. That was back in the eighties when Mario only had a stand on the Oudegracht with the bakery below in the werfkelder (cellar on the canal). Often there were long lines on the Oudegracht for a broodje., especially around lunch time ... And now you've refreshed my memories, I crave for one 😱
    As mentioned in a previous comment, you really do have to come back to Utrecht on a nice summer's day (and evening), the city vibrates!

    Hey Michelle and Alex,
    you guys should buy a Museum Jaarkaart.
    When we lived in the Netherlands, we had that card every year. The kids loved it! Almost every weekend, we went to a museum somewhere in the country.
    With this card, most museums are for free, or you pay a fraction of the admission. For special exhibitions you pay a little extra. 100% worth the money!

    The Utrecht spritsen from Theo Blom are wayyyyy too addictive. I started a new job as a municipal official for the City of Utrecht this year and they gave me a 500g box of those cookies. I had to give them away because I just couldn't help myself. Almost ate the entire box in 30 minutes.

      There have been more copycats of Mario in Utrecht over the years. So weird that you don't find them in other cities. Broodje Ben and Mario are hard to compare: Mario has an unique concept but only that, Ben offers really good sandwiches , but they are not unique. Luckely, if you live or work in Utrecht you can eat booth 🙂

    • @NumberFourteen
      @NumberFourteen 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Broodje Carlo is way better then Broodje Mario. The big difference between them is that at Broodje Carlo they put your sandwich in the oven first. So the bread gets crispy and the cheese starts melting

    • @JasperJanssen
      @JasperJanssen 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There’s actually two separate copy cats at janskerkhof. The left hand one used to be Mario 2 - from the same family - but there was some drama there and now it’s no longer Mario.

    Broodje Mario is pretty good, but I think the best sandwiches in Utrecht are at La Piazza Basilico. It is not in the city center though, but next to Ikea. Their Pollo (chicken) sandwich is AMAZING! Everything is fresh and homemade. The queue can be VERY long around lunchtime though (for good reason).
    Even though I no longer live near Utrecht, I still go to get a pollo sandwich when I can!

    Next time als try the Broodje Gezond from Keek, from their 'bakkerswinkel' at the Oudegracht, where you can buy really good bread for at home but also buy a sandwich to eat there or for takeaway. At that location at the Oudegracht in the side street next to it, they also have a small bench to sit on and a small window through which you can also order from the outside. They also have a place for breakfast and lunch not far from there at the Twijnstraat. Their bakery is also close to the other two locations, at the Springweg. I recently had that Broodje Gezond, and I am from Utrecht, born and raised, but it was the best Broodje Gezond I ever had... My first thought was: this should rival with Broodje Mario. You should also see the Twijnstraat area and the Ledig Erf with its cafes, Café Ledig Erf is my favourite: and in summer time they also have a nice terrace. At the Oudegracht you also have Café België.... they are there since some decades already, selling many many many beers... Ah and when you are at the Ledig Erf/Twijstraat area also go see the Westerkade (and Oosterkade), next to there.... and go underneath the Vaartsche Rijn Station towards cafe-restaurant 'Camping Ganspoort' and some other bars around there (next to hotel Moxy).... nice for drinks and food and with good weather you can sit alongside the water. And in the Watertower next to it are also two restaurants... And when at Ledig Erf also walk towards the single towards the part where the water has been returned, alongside the Catharijnesingel, at the side of 5 star hotel Karel V.... nice to have a stroll.... sit and eat your self brought lunch ...

    While we couldn't go outside because apparently there was a thunderstorm happening when we were there (something I only know from the experience booklet everyone made from the trip) I only recall something about moving ropes, which probably was the floor where they rung the bells manually.

I don't remember exactly, but i think each build took him about a decade and about 200.000.....Euro or Guilder. That was fun.
    There was just one thing that I found a bit strange: you were at bakkerij Theo Blom, but you didn't buy a "domtorentje", which is an oversized bonbon with a creamy filling. I don't know if you'll ever be coming back to Utrecht, but if you do you should add that to your bucketlist for that trip (unless you're allergic to chocolate).

    Next time in Utrecht you could visit the Catholic Willibrordus Kerk ( Church), also open for sightseeing alone. it is a small church with one of the most beautifull interiors in the Netherlands. It is used by ultra conservative Catholics who prefer the old Latin Mass. Pictures can be found online.

    Some background information on the UFO:
    On the Domplein on June 4, 1999, the Panorama 2000 (millennium) exhibition, organized by the Centraal Museum, was opened.
    This exhibition could only be experienced as a whole from the Dom Tower. The works of art unfolded in the panorama from the various levels. To enable disabled people to view the exhibition, a temporary lift was attached to the tower.
    24 works had been completed, such as the second sunset in the west by Olafur Eliasson, the Ferris wheel for cars by John Körmeling, a large photo on the nave of the Dom Church by Roy Villevoy and roof animals moved by the wind by Theo Jansen.
    Afterwards, the works of art were removed again, with the exception of the UFO on the roof of the ProRail head office at the Moreelsepark, made by Marc Ruygrok, and the giant sparrow by Tom Claassen.

    If you two make it to Amsterdam, try the oldest Belgium fry stand Vlaams (a block away from the coffee shop they filmed Oceans Twelve) and try a unique sauce “Americaan” that doesn’t taste like any American sauce I’ve ever tried (funny how Americaan describes stuff not found in America like filet Americaan, beef tar tar), it’s spicy, tart and addicting. “Belgium mayo” is more like what American’s are used to than the slightly sweet Dutch Freit sauce which is like light Miracle Whip.

    Broodje Mario, there is no substitute.
    Although Mario Nistro died in 2013, his legacy continuous by his family. The thing that make the dough so special is, that it is sourdough, therefor not made with yeast.
    Next time order double topping or doppio and take out/away. Ask for separate grass and sweet green peppers.
    Warm the buns, folded open, incl topping Cheese/Salami/Chorizo in an oven for about 10-12 minutes. Don't forget to put the grass and the sweet green peppers back on. Fold close and ENJOY!

    • @jeroenarts3610
      @jeroenarts3610 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @Gnomelotte It is not the grass you think about when thinking of The Netherlands. The grass are the vegies (carrot and undisclosed white vegetable, cut Julienne style) and sweet green pepper that are on the bun. You should order them separate so at home it doesn't go into the oven.

    Great vid of the city I lived in for years end still work in. The broodje Mario versus Ben rivalry is more about competition for the large lunchmarket. Broodje Maria hasn't changed a thing since decades and thus is a famous staple. Broodje Ben is more of the 'Instagram Hype' newcomer type. So it's more of which of the two are you rooting for rivalry.

    andalouse sauce is my favorite, if you ever go to a turkish grocery shop or any islamic one, they got the tubes on offer with some variations like moroccan sauce and algerian sauce, they all three are different between brands, some use chopped onions in them which elevates these sauces to the next level, unfortunately dutch groceries dont stock up on those sauces
    and if they do its not the same, dutch stores sell andalouce sauces without the crunch or kick of the real deal

    Amsterdamse uien (onions). The trade of "tafelzuur" (table sour - pickled things) was a Jewish business before the majority got killed by the Nazis. Amsterdam still has one shop with that background: De Leeuw on the corner of Vrijheidslaan and Vechtstraat.
    Open Thu, Fri, Sun 9-5. Really a place to visit as culinary pilgrimage if you love Amsterdam's onions. I guess the family are in this business almost 200 years

      The Netherlands used to be the cacao hub of the world where the beans/seeds got processed (roasted, ground, etc.) and this then would be used to make chocolate by Swiss process in Switzerland, Belgian process in Belgium.
      And the Netherlands had its own production of chocolates, bonbons, etc.
      You may be familiar with the Droste cacao-box effect - famous Dutch cacao (powder) for making cocoa when mothers DIYed their recipy of chocomel , chocolate, etc.
      If you were on a pilgrimage to Amsterdamse uien, then you could pay a visit to chocolaterie Huize van Wely - since 1922 in Noordwijk aan Zee, Hoofdstraat 88, but also in AMSTERDAM, Beethovenstraat 72
      You might find smaller businesses - boutique shops with exotic new tastes - but Van Wely is really good.
