  • December 2010 was indeed a bad winter but this was a weekend with lovely blue skys. The Santa Polar Express train seen here departing from the Bo'ness and Kinneil Railway was hauled by 0-6-0T No.17 Braeriach, top and tailed by LNER D49 class 4-4-0 and No.246 Morayshire .Also on duty was Class 27001 (BR D5347).

That 27 is running perfectly, no smoke at all. Someone's done a lot of work on the engine- and all credit to them! Thanks for sharing, great to see.

Nice startup without any drama of the 27. I think it's safe tot state that the Sulzer diesels are better at starting in the cold than the EE's.

Being originally from Darligton UK as a child I was brought up around Steam Trains I Love watching movements at Bo'ness and also follow the North Yorkshire Moors Railway ... Thank you ( and of course all the volunteers) who without these Heritage Railways could not operate .. Well done to all Peter Sutton Byford Western Australia September 2018

The magic of steam locomotives still going strong. Also among todays children while even I with my 50 years of age are born way beyond the steam era.

Wow! I know nothing about trains. Just passing interest and admiration, especially for "deltic" type/style diesels, but even I can see that that is is a perfectly running engine!

When I was younger I got roped into helping start a old train. We had to use a big welder to boost tha batteries and a garden sprayer full of diesel or WD40 to get them going........Good times lol

If I was there I'd have multiple cups of hot chocolate one every hour and for breakfast bacon eggs and sausages cooked on a clean shovel in the firebox I've always wanted to try that. Snow looks nice on a sunny day but I wouldn't want be working in it.

Fantastic video, perfect cold start and the steam engines were perfection even if the return run may of been a bit chilly for the reversing lead.

The 27 seems to start up a lot more quickly than a 37 from cold.

    • @ScotSteam47

probably cranked it over without fuel for 30secs, gets oil in there and warms them all up. Fuel vapour actually cools the cylinders and isn't very productive to crank with fuel running on a cold start

They are still using steam? wow. Converted to oil I assume. Do they have a shortage of locomotives or something? Steam isn't competitive I don't believe but it is nostalgic.

    • @DanielW3440
      @DanielW3440 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Its a heritage railway - where the attraction is steam. They are tourist railways which rely on the nostalgia of steam. Yes they do still run on coal.

    i dont understand
is this railway a full railway? or is their a second stop? is it a loop? or is their only 1 station then a dead end further up?

I'm not sure what your question is. The line is a heritage railway owned and operated by the Scottish Railway Preservation Society. Look up Bo'ness and Kinneil railway on Google (you do know how to do that?) for as much information as you want.

    • @bonnetdedouche

It basically goes about 1-2 miles upto an old clay mine at Birkhill station (shut down now as far as i am aware) then turns back to Bo'ness. I'm sure the tracks do lead onto a main line somewhere i'e Edinburgh/Glasgow but don't think they are in use anymore? Bo'ness railway is mostly if not completely run by volunteers and has a museum which is worth a visit on it's own never mind the train ride to Birkhill. It also has kids days etc where Thomas the tank has been known to put in an appearance now and again.

How does a pusher coordinate with the front engine? It seems to me that, if a pusher pushes too much, it could buckle the train. Can someone explain?
