Have you owned a valenta engine in the last ten years if so you may be eligible for compensation due to misleading emissions data don't call now or ever ... seriously now I always come back to this video thanks for posting it
Starts in only one cylinder, and the other problem is the fuel detonation,,caused by the huge force that the piston make to run,,,the fuel doesnt do the diesel cycle,,the fuel dont burn gradually,,,the engine rotate some degres, and an amount of fuel ignites very fast, and the result is detonation,,,,,,same as the otto cycle when detonation occurs. may break a piston this issue. Another problenm if the engine is old,,,may measure the compression ratio, that may be higher than 15:1 If the compression ratio isnt equal in all the cylinders is a problem,,,some cylinders fire quickly and the others no..as this case.. but for start the engine more fast, a preheater may be installed,,and warm the coolant water,.to 50 or more celcious degrees,,this help the engine to start quicly. the clag is generated because the fuel didnt ignite ,it is converted in steam fuel, very flammable and white colour. The clag may remain until all the cylinders work. When the exhaust smoke is blue colour,is a ring problems or an oil leakage,by the valves seals.Black smoke means fuel incomplete burnt.
Great vid mate! I dont get it... Why dont they install a preheater to keep the coolant at a steady 50celsius would make the engine last alot longer. This 1 cilinder stuff takes aprox 300.000km of the engine's life. The Rabbits in Germany (DB Class 218 have it and some of them still have thier original MTU 12V956 TB10 engine which is aprox 45-48years old now.) Everyone loves this Valenta why not preserve it in a humane way and prevent enginedamage You can hear the bearings complain. When they first rev it up. A 10 minute idle followed by a gentle rev would be ideal. Anyways what a great clag!
+DieselHeart BR218 Preheater is on the list.. (install already started) There was one lumpy cylinder in this video which the injector pump (just changed) was over egging - can hear it thumping, part of the reason for startup was so I could adjust. This was our first experience at properly cold starting... I can now get it up to idle in about 10 seconds without too much coughing and banging.
You’re right it isn’t good for the longevity of the engine. The knocking you hear is the piston(s) knocking as further heat is generated before all the fuel ignites.
There is nothing wrong with it, so your comments about it being 'fixed and serviced' are un-just. Most mainline diesels behave in exactly the same manner when cold started on a depot.
cidertom the engine was taken out of a fgw hst when thay had mtu engines fitted (The powercar will also receive installation of production Paxman Valenta RP200L engine Number S508 (installed new into 43153 in 2001 under Virgin CrossCountry, before re-installation to 43143 of First Great Western after a spell in storage), donated to the NRM from the MTU re-power programme. This will mark a sooner return to traffic of a Paxman Valenta powercar than previously expected. The work is currently being undertaken at East Midlands Trains HST depot Neville Hill T&RSMD. taken from wikipedia)
As an engineer, this makes me cry. All that aluminium and steel with tolerance gaps that were specced for stable running, and you thrash the shit out of it cold. Watch the big American diesels do it so much better with their block pre heat tech.
@@leehayes70 many people believe that one of the main purposes in life is to preserve human history. if you want this ""junk"" scrapped, you quite literally want to destroy one of the two prototype locomotives that revolutionised british high speed rail travel. also you should maybe get a fact check, as if you get every claggy train that has ever ran, not just in britain but all over the world, the total environmental damage would not even compare to what cars and especially lorries / semi trucks have caused. leave ships, aircraft and trains alone, focus on lorries and cars. good day :)
@@evilnigga68 That’s about as profound as a green lettuce.. Any vehicle that produces that much crap just to get it started needs to cut up into bits and re used for something else..
This perfectly replicates me trying to wake up in the morning.
Amazing. Can hear those cylinders. Beautiful.
Am I the only one who loves the sound of this cold start? Sure it's bad for the power plant, but THAT SOUND!
Doing the power unit no good whatsoever

Thought it was just EE engines where the cylinders join in one by one. Excellent vid!!!!
She is so beautiful and I love her so much 😍♥️
Love the engine drum 😂👍!
British locomotives have some the most unique sounds
What an absolute racket-and a lot of clag!
Lol starting on only one cylinder. Thanks god one cylinder has taken his courage to save the battery !
What kind of engine is installed in this one ?
V12 Paxman Valenta 79 Litre. As per the original.
Good engines!
ElectronikHeart que
no idea, but i'm guessing it would fail its MOT emissions test
Well it doesn't meet Euro 6 to start with...
Ah great to hear a valenta bursting into life
Is it normal for it to start so slowly?
Yes, when cold.
Reminds my of the old Diesel Rail Cars that used to do the Reading-Redhill -Tonbridge run in the 80's.
Cold & smelly in the winter.
Old Cats with the pony motors were the same way.

I prefer the Screaming valentas rather than the Clunking valentas.
Do you ever add new videos?
Sounds like the wheels going over the track joints at the start.....
That poor Paxman knocking horribly ,like Hugh Hefner on weed.
You mean like hugh hefner in a filing cabinet!
I heard that this car still has a valenta in it.
Great video. ☺️ I just subscribed to your TH-cam channel. ☺️
Paxton ?
*Paxman.
*Paxman yeah
If this was released as a HipHop "tune".........

+Ben Webber Exelent. This beast has to be preserved at her best.
+Ben Webber Was you wearing ear defenders
I don't think it's the bearings you hear knocking, but it's the sound of inproper combustion of the diesel fuel.
It sounds painfull :P
That was a struggle but got there eventually
Sounds like my bone joints first thing in the morning.
I subscribed to you, keep up with the good work
Sounds great when running, but that banging about at the beginning sounded horrendous, surely that can't be good for an engine?
+andyrowlands50029 its dreadful

That's a typical large diesel engine the warmer they get the softer they sound
Bloody hell! I don't think us Americans know what a cold start is.
No glowplugs?
Nope
Sounds Good!
Theirs nowt finer then the sound the daddy off all power cars starting up cold really dose tug at your hart strings
hello next time leave class 41 in normal idle to let her warm up and then leave the rpm in normal idle when she started up
sounds like my old vauxhaull
Sounds like some Seriously bad piston knock, and also people say that steam locos make a lot of smoke
i don't know why the smoke coming out form nearly at the head of the locomotive
Because that's....... where the exhaust is
Because that's where the bloody exhausts go.
think she was having a grumpy start
Bit like the wife on most mornings then.
Don't ler her read this or you'll have a grumpy life for a while.
Belligerent old bugger on startup, isn't it?
there are small volcanoes with less smoke than that lol.....great loco tho
next time try bump starting it
Poor thing. Should be block heated or actually fixed and serviced before attempting to start it :(
There is nothing wrong with it, so your comments about it being 'fixed and serviced' are un-just. Most mainline diesels behave in exactly the same manner when cold started on a depot.
this loco has been restored and has a brand new original 0 hours engine fresh from paxman

thanks for the additional information you have provided here very useful one hell of a grumpy startup and of course awesome clag

This is seen only in some British locos. For example; Class 55s and 31s begin o run very easy and quickly when cold.
engines from ČKD factory are best!!!
Greta would love this not😂bet she’s been in a train pulled buy one though , 🤣🤣🤣
That was slow!!!!
The Tundberg express
love the sound but 41s are disgusting
Trombonee
It can’t be doing the engine any good whatsoever.
I can see two engines and one UFO trying to ignite antimaterial-hyper-plasma motor :)
Not so smart boy.
What a bag of chisels.
They should of put in a VP185 Engine in it instead...
Good Video...
You must be kidding! That power car was built to have a Valenta and there is absolutely nothing that sounds as good as one!
NO NO NO NO NO
0:37 video was ruined by some little chav bopping his head in the shot.
LOL feel the same way
Wow trains are big time polluters 😂 I know this video about 6 years ago 😂
Why must modern locomotives look cheap and ugly as hell??
The cockpit looks like a porta loo.
It was built in the 70s prototype to the hst
I saw it many times at Derby
'Modern'
*built in 1972*
Haha modern you say
What a nail. Scrap it for gods sake..
Why would you scrap a perfectly running and operational, preserved prototype?
It's a cold start of what is essentially a marine diesel engine that gets started probably less than once per year. This is normal.
