Sold my 2015 5K 27” iMac a couple of months ago. Hopefully the next iMac redesign doesn’t disappoint.
I’m looking at doing the same with my late 2015 21.5” base model
What’s the point though? These 2015 iMacs aren’t going to depreciate much further. Plus they’re still plenty useful and some of them are quite powerful. I’m going to keep my Late 2015 21.5” iMac with a 4K display, 3.3 GHz i7, 16 GB’s of ram, and a 500GB SSD. Yes, it was a BTO but I got it used on eBay. Still very snappy.
@@ucrjedi I have the base 21.5” model so it’s not the fastest but still usable
@@ConorORegan , it may be usable but there are many used iMac’s out there with SSD’s, tons of ram, faster CPU’s, and 4K/5K displays for the same price or less.
@@ucrjedi Mine's was pretty slow tbh. Found a university student on craigslist who was interested, so I performed a factory reset and sold it off.
bought new mid 2017 disappointing to find out I could not upgrade ram easy. Today 7 years later mouse is gone trackpad I love it's slowing down for its life but today I did something and it works fine. my first iMac in 2008 lasted until the mid 2017
yeah. Macs are a ripoff.
😭 i have a 2014 Mac mini and this "garbage" is an unimaginable upgrade for me
Its probably not if you compare specs. The SSD is upgradable in the 2014 mac minis so you can do that to breathe some new life into it
I have a 2008 iMac this one would be mega upgrade for me
@@carsman248 same here lol but hey the old macs are great for upgrading
@@gej36138 Yeah I’m just tryna get myself a new Apple ID or try and get into the old one that my sister had so I can update from OS X 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) to El Capitan and either stay there or instantly upgrade again to High Sierra.
i have a 2011 macbook pro and my geekbench scores are 33 percent higher 😭😭
05:40 All Intel-based Macs come with Catalina. Apple knows, that many of the companies buying Intel Macs are not ready for Catalina.
My personal guess is, that this iMac is targeted at receptions and small shops, who just need a nice looking computer at the desk. Not that I understand it, but that's their choice to buy it :)
Still, fun to watch! :)
What's the alternative with reasonable price because not everyone has a 6 figure salary ?
I picked up this model for my kid last year for virtual school, and it’s worked like a champ.
I feel so bad for you
@@culan_SCP I have this iMac. I bought it as a secondary computer for 200 bucks, Cracked it open, installed 16GB of RAM and an SSD. Thing runs like a champ. Would I have bought it new at 1,200? ABSOLUTELY NOT.

Hey Luke, nice Apple-branded microfiber cloth, interesting that it came with a computer.
My favorite moment was Luke looking in the camera saying "I spent $1100 on this" and watching the life drain out
"It's running Catalina!" [dies inside]

He probably made more from the views and sponsorship, so it probably wasn’t a loss.
@@TheLucidLuxray oh for sure. At the end he returned it anyway

Lol yes. I can’t believe apple produced this machine a month ago. Mind boggling
9:20 THAT'S EVEN LOWER THAN THE LAPTOP I USED TO USE BEFORE USING MY M1 IMAC!! That laptop cost me ~Rs. 40,000. For Indian tech market $500 is very very reasonable. That laptop specifically was a Lenovo Yoga 520-14IKB 81C8 8th Gen Intel Core i3-8130U. Ik that thing was slow hence got a new M1 iMac.
I live in Brazil, and in the Brazilian Apple Store this iMac costs 14.499 reais (Brazilian currency), which converts to around 2600 dollars and is the equivalent to 14,5 minimum wages in Brazil (here the minimum wage is calculated per month, not per hour). Absolutely crazy!
Brazil is completely nuts mermão
Back off. It's still a Macintosh. And better than 90% of Windoze boxes.
It’s popular in schools. Probably the only reason why they sell it.
👌🏽
Schools are being scammed. It's a terrible value for the price.
@@EgilPettersen Generally speaking, schools don't pay MSRP for these. They are usually on contracts with Apple where they get these for like... 100 dollars a unit. If that.
The school district where I live mostly use Windows PCs and they have a few Macs around schools for TV production, etc.
I'm glad that they stopped selling this thing now...
...Even though I ordered this thing 2021 and it literally still didn't arrive and my 1199€ are also gone.
I saw that at Apple retail seller. And works suprisingly well though. I’m gotta buy it if it costs $99.
Wait several decades until inflation kicks in
I have this iMac 5400RPM model that used to be my Dad's. To make it run much better, transfer the OS to an external SSD drive (but stay at Big Sur OS as the newer OS has problems with some SSDs). It is still not very powerful, but this will make a big difference in performance. I would NOT buy this iMac, but this is a good upgrade if you find yourself in possession of this model. The SSD upgrade makes running standard apps, and even Microsoft 365 apps, relatively painless. I use the internal drive for one copy of backups and other data storage. I will eventually replace it, but this does help.
I have that same iMac that I bought for $50 from my job. Although it's the base model, it treats me well, especially for the price I paid.
that price to performance go crazy
for 50 dollars, that’s really good
Try an external SSD to operate from and it will make a significant improvement.
wow better 5x better than some office pc
Idk what happened to that Geekbench Score, but it scored WAY lower than my 13” 2017 MBP (esc) with that exact same processor (with Turboboost Disabled*)
Mine scored (still bad) 1362 with geekbench 5.4 on multi-core, the single-core was also higher at 554 (also still bad)
And with TurboBoost Enabled it scored 855 single-score and 2081 multi-core

There are some people who would be very grateful to own a computer at all. "I'm so used to 27's like the iMac pro" well lah dee dahhh! I wonder what it feels like to be showered with everything they ever wanted.
Interesting. I just ran Geekbench on a 2017 base model and got 876 single core, 1732 multi core.

I had to say: Catalina is not 'outdated OS'. Even Mojave is still security updated.
@Frank Silvers Yes, and I may think Big Sur would slow this 'thing', better stay on Catalina or better, downgrade to High Sierra x)
@Frank Silvers Mojave is fine because it has dark mode ;)
And yeah, Adobe Price Policy with subscriptions per year is a shame. One app = 10 APPS PACKAGE lol
@Frank Silvers There's always a period of overlap where the old OS still gets preinstalled. Intel Macs of all kinds were still coming with Catalina preinstalled in March, not just this one.
@Frank Silvers Apple released Big Sur in November and kept shipping Intel Macs with Catalina until mid-March.
So, is it better to stay on the old os?
Now that you've had experience building up an old iMac with M1 mac mini internals - do that with THIS one, but this time run all the connectors outside to keep it clean looking
Apple’s 14 day return policy: “help”

I could use it! I still use and love my 21,5" mid 2011 iMac! It does it's job nicely in my vintage synths music room! Right now I don't need (and want) anything else!
the 2011 21.5 iMac is actually better, I have one, and they all have a QUAD core cpu and easily upgradeable RAM, as well as a better and upgradable graphics card to a metal graphics card, which can then run big surrrrr
I'm still using a 2008 24" iMac (2.8GHz Core 2 Duo, 5GB 800MHZ DDR2 SDRAM on El Capitan). It's in my garage and it's my iTunes server/Unifi controller/web server/video streamer when on my exercise bike. It's amazing how long a low powered Mac can remain useful. Pretty sure I wouldn't buy Luke's one new though.
There must be something wrong. Yes, it's a dual core and pretty shitty, but if you lookup Geekbench (4 or 5) scores for the I5-7360U CPU, it should perform *significantly* better.
Im glad I bought a Mac mini m1 (the base model) in December because already have a decent Monitor.... ;)
"Please don't buy this computer" I bought that computer, and several years later it still goes ok. Like me, it's a little slower now with the frequent beach ball of death, but it'll do for a while yet. I'm 73 so I don't need spiffy, just this old clunker. I like the mouse and keyboard though....
That Sponsor transition though... S m o o t h
There is a simple reason for them to still have this: Schools, Offices, Parents with kids who are doing home school. Not everyone needs 16 GB of memory and an i7. Especially if it's an office that runs them off a server.
So...you will unbox the shitty Mac, dunk on it, return it (without paying interest) and take the money off the YT views. Got it. All in a day's work.
Exactly. And Apple ends up with a computer they have to refurbish, get less money for, add new packaging, make costs for handling etc. etc. So every time he does this it costs apple money. Yes it is in the return period but very well knowing in advance you will return the computer is not a fair way of working.
@@marcel9568 Abuse of the return process is how you end of getting a worse return policy, which is going to happen if this purchase in bad faith nonsense continues. But hey, enjoy the clicks, I guess. Or maybe donate it to a local school and take a small hit (you will still get the 2021 business purchase deduction).

I bought one in 2017 and another with 2018. Both were upgraded to SSD at time of purchase. One has 16 Gig of ram. Both are still on the job and will upgrade to Ventura when available. Both have provided tremendous value and are the most produced desktops in history due to its success.
My school is selling these for 225 dollars right now. Will probably pick one up next week.
The fact that it was manufactured three weeks ago, seems to indicate they are still selling quite well. Not everyone requires the latest hardware and this machine meets the casual market or elder generation.

If you forget to return this before 14 days is up, I’ll trade you my 2015 13” MBP for it
Immortal being that transcends....@6:25 Dude, Luke, that part is HILARIOUS
The only reason why apple is keeping this iMac around is for their nice comparision charts at the next apple Silicon iMac Reveal. They can throw numbers like 20x faster cpu and graphics performance at us. And realistically this is the only reason and really the only one😅. Marketing 😁👍 Plus it is embarassing that this thing is slower than my 2012 MBP
I agree other wise it wouldn’t be a thing now
That and probably some corporate and business customers still purchase it.
Wrong, they will compare the M1X/M2 chip to the M1 and probably to the i9.
@@justinlange7092 ?!? Why ?!? Why would you say it is 1.5x faster and not say it ist 25x faster what is more impressive to the average consumer ? And better from a marketing persepective ? About 4:37: my 2019 4K iMac also came with a screen cleaning cloth
Luke, did you ever consider that the reason that this is still being manufactured and sold is because Apple is still selling bucket loads of them as the cheapest entry level desktop. Please don’t spoil this channel by arguing from a high pedestal of a iMac Pro user. Remember the humble beginnings of your channel when the most exiting thing in the world was a 2010 dual processor Mac Pro ...
They still sell it even after the 24” iMac came out. You just have to find it. If you click the 27” iMac on the Apple website and click buy, there is also a section with the 21.5” iMac. There is only one configuration. THE BASE MODEL.
Plot twist: Luke only bought this to compare against the M1X iMac coming later this month as a baseline
it doesn't suck as bad as the new ugly imacs which even though they have the latest and greatest m1, doesn't have any useful ports.
My dad used to have the 2015 base model 21.5", he used it for programming but he hated it because of how slow it was. Thank GOD he upgraded to the top spec 16" MacBook Pro
