Can You Upgrade the iMac Pro?!

  • Apple doesn't want you to disassemble iMac Pro, but yolo.
    Try Dashlane for free at: dashlane.com/snazzylabs and use coupon code 'snazzylabs' when you decide to upgrade to Dashlane Premium to save 10%.
    Despite questionable hardware choices, Apple certainly struck it out of the park with iMac Pro. It's fast, it's mean, it's expensive, and it's meant to stay sealed. Snazzy Labs decides to open, disassemble, and upgrade the iMac Pro's CPU and RAM anyways.

    NOTE: at 3:01, that's the 10-core upgrade price not 18-core. That's a 4AM error.

      Snazzy Labs kinda unfair to include $130 in mouse and keyboard in the imac pro comparable build when a $20 biglots mouse keyboard combo is as good as the shitty ones apple gives you and if you want mechanical the redragon kumara is $30 and the logitech g300s gaming mouse is $20. And to be honest at that point id pay the extra $50 to use windows 10 and if you really want to work with mac os you get the option to dual boot.

      Having more ram is never overkill specially if your dealing with video and pdf files the more the better. Custom PC can be more expensive but one benefit to it is SLI, more power on PSU and better cooling.

      @@myselfremade The warranty is *not* voided in this case. The act of opening a device (regardless of stickers) is not legally capable of voiding a warranty. This is what the written law states. It even says "Warrantors cannot require branded parts be used..." Meaning, you are free to modify the internal components as you wish and the warranty is still binding between the warrantor (company/provider) and consumer (purchasing entity.) The sticker is also not allowed to lie, the FTC sent out warnings about this since it is deceptive and suggests and illegal practice. You can lookup the "Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act" and read the official legal bill if any of this is confusing. Wikipedia has a fairly good summarization though of the most important bits in simpler language.

    I am not surprised with Apple's way and choice of applying thermal paste. I work in Apple Certified Repair center and new 2016 and 2017 MacBook Pro machines are all having GPU overheating problems after less than a year of use. And guess why? Thermalpaste. I applied Thermal Grizzly paste on my machine, but due to Apple Certification I am not allowed to apply a 3rd party paste to our clients. Here you go…

    • @CommodoreFan64
      @CommodoreFan64 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Mark Wolf If you are talking about hardware this powerful in a form factor like this then sure, but I don't know about anything thermal throttling, and melting down, as you can get some really good small form factor Intel i3/i5 Asus Chrome boxes that will handle the work loads of 80 - 90% of the planet who are not gamers, and/or content creators, that stay cool enough, and don't thermal throttle. Also look at phones I have a Moto G5 + with an Ocotocore CPU, and 4GB of ram that stays cool in my pocket all day long, and even after gaming on it with a heavy game like GTA, or even Fortnite(only tried it a few times to see if I like it, but not my thing) it barely gets warm. the only time I've had it get hotter then I like is when using the included turbo charger, which I rarely use.

      If all VRM phases turned on it could handle 18 cores, but if you running application that using less cores - for efficiency reasonable to turne some of them off, and that where we got problem with high mhz CPU. Also i belive 18 cores got less base frequency and less agressive boost.

    • @StopaskingformynameYouTube
      @StopaskingformynameYouTube 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If the VRM's don't handle a 300mhz upgrade then they are allready stretched pretty thin as is.
      VRM's should allways handle way more than what a processor can draw under extreme overclocking, because if one of them fail both mobo and gpu are dead instantly.
      Cooling is the main fault of vrm's, if they reach 120c they will wear out insanely fast.
      The vrm's on my old Gigabyte 990fxa UD3 was designed for 220w tdp yet i pushed them far beyond that for allmost 5 years before i upgraded to ryzen, they are still going strong but now at base clock on the cpu as it's being used as a mediacenter.

You win so little doing the CPU updates (the price on of the iMAC pros is reasonable, as time is not free) that is not as many as you will like. If Apple pulls this kind of pricing with the nex "modular" Mac Pro it's going to be a hit, if and only if they fix the rest of the line, or remove it.

      I mean, technically, nothing about the thumbnail is untrue. lol. The fact of the matter is that thumbnails like these have increased my view count by 500% on average. Great video, I'm wondering if you have seen any of the thermal throttling that's been occurring on the stock iMac Pros people have been complaining about after the upgrade? A nice add to this would've been seeing exactly which thermal paste you used (and show how you apply it so it's not excessive). I've given up on Apple after 18 years and will opt for workstation mid-tower with 4k display, tired of the severe price gouging. For laptops the latest high end 15" competitors are killing it with price and performance- comparatively. Thanks again for the excellent info.

    So, i watched whole video, now can I comment why building PC seems better to me?
    So its not only about specs, and yeah, true, valuable thing in mac seems to be screen, you can still get full setup with higher raw performance, im not looking at wonky apple-only cpu's becouse I personally treat such thing as one huge anticustomer ripoff, but meh, whatever. Comparing raw juice per buck, you van comfortably have ~4000$ for 4k (or 5k? Whats that standard? Thats the trick, you cannot compare 4k to 5k, huh? Truth is, its 5k for this purpose. To make comparing harder. You wont tell me that its consumer friendly).
    Anyway, yeah, you can get some better raw juice per buck, but where is that awesome apple service?
    Well, that service is beeing lack of service. Their service is ripoff, when with your own build, you can easly upgrade, replace parts at will! And nobody will void your warranty (unless you overclock or delid or so) for your modifications. When you send your lets say GPU for warranty, you have whole machine still working, at your service, working on integrated gpu, or old gpu you had in drawer.
    Apple will charge you unreasonable prices for service, when its been confirmed numerous times they give for example 'refub' mobos instead of new ones, when there is even no need for that!
    And most precious thing in your computer, the data... Well, say godbye. In PC, except few minor laptops you can plug in and out storage, so even if your mobo goes bad, you have your data.
    Another thing. Did apple need raid 0 to crank the reads to 3 gigs? Why my non-raid nvme ssd reads out over 4 gigs? Its not a thing nowadays that is top of the line. If I wanted I could make insane raid array for 8.5 gigs of read and around 7.2 gig of write. But who uses raid0, when you can have raid 10 and not risk your data go bad....
    Okay, whatever, my point is, that you are making mistake by saying 'you cannot compare raw horse power, this is apple cpu!'
    And if that change in price seems minor, think about servicability, how your data is safe and prone to random f**kup and how screwed can one get by smallest issue with their expensive as living hell computer.
    Btw, my setup cost me around 2.500$, and only thing I have worse is RAM ammount and screen (4k not 5k, while I dont even think it is a valid argument)

      My computer regularly draws over 400W, with factory clock speeds, during gaming.
      The PSU being rated for 370W actually means that the entire computer should draw closer to 50-70% of that to stay in the high efficiency range. Which means that the entire computer should be using about 260W under normal use (about the TDP of a single 1080ti).

    Awesome that it worked though! Looks like you can upgrade to the full fat 18-core Xeon too then lol although the cooling system will probably not be able to keep up...that's probably why cinebench scores aren't much different.

    You didn't talk about temperatures after your upgrade. Hotter? Cooler? Which thermal paste did you use?

    Crazy question... can you swap in a i9-9900k and unbuffered/non-ECC memory? The i9 has a base clock of 3.6 GHz and boosts up to 5 GHz. If you can de-lid and use LM on the die and thermal block, there should be enough temperature headroom to get this CPU to fly. I got a non-Xeon to work in my 2009 Mac Pro, so wondering if this might be a similar situation.
