Uncle Larry! Hey a few videos ago you mentioned that most people who say they are guitar players aren’t really, could you give us a good definition of a real guitar player? Is a real guitar player one that uses intervals and progressions, or more inversions, or knows how to play chords/scales in every key, or is it about playing more than just covers, etc. Thanks, rock on dude! 🤘🏻
Like i said below…a real guitar player is a guy that 10 other real guitar players stand around and say “damn, that’s a bad motherfucker right there” It’s as simple as that
Hey Tom, thank you for the inspiration, the humor, the community, and the wonderful guitar playing. Your compositions have brought a tear to my eye on many occasions. I'm gonna be 74 years old and have been playing guitar since I was a kid and I never heard the likes of you. Between you and Gutherie I've learned so much. I wish you nothing but the best this life has to offer.
Tom: Love the sound of that Gibson acoustic and the sweet vibe you coax from its strings. The seeming ease with which you move between the acoustic world and the electric is a true inspiration.
@@RideCO550have to add those two are favorites of mine as well! Gordon Mote what a class act! I’m still hoping for a Gordon Mote T shirt with “If you have to think about it, your to late.” Between him and Tom there’s more than ten churches worth of inspiration in that room!
Thanks for the intonation check Uncle Larry. I always wondered if it was possible to have perfect tuning up and down the fretboard. Now I know! Thanks for your wonderful vids. Enjoy them all.
My take away from today - a whole lot more understanding of how a guitar sounds when properly intonated. Thanks for giving away so much of your wisdom Tom.
Just getting back to the motel after a long day of work. Got a food truck burrito, settling in to catch up with the Session Man. Great sounding Gibson, and some damn fine playing. Going to work on music things in a few, got my trusty acoustic by my side. Thank you for doing what you do, Unc 🙏🏻🤍
Pearls of wisdom. Pretty amazing the level of knowledge you can arrive at having after so much experience doing what you do. Great explanation of how the strobe works! I also liked the example of changing the tuning on the A string to match the higher voicing of the chord. Pretty hip.
That's some sweet tones right there, and the scarf makes it quite dashing! I've was given an old L-48, stripped and in pieces, a while back. I gotta get on the project someday. Thanks Tom.
What always amaze me dear Tom it's the regularity of your strumming even with years of playing guitar never got even close to your reguarity and pocket that's very impressive
Man, I did a gig over the weekend, backing up a female, doing a lot of 90's country, some newer stuff, some twisted stuff, it was great! There was another guitar player and I sharing lead/rhythm roles, then the usual bass, drums etc... The second rehearsal him and I talked about your channel for a while, about how much we love it, and how cool of a cat you are, and how much fun it would be to hang someday. Maybe one day, we will make the long journey from Atlantic Canada to Nashville. I did it several times in the 90's, but that seems a life time ago! Great stuff Tom! Thanks
Thanks uncle Larry! Your videos are so inspiring! The class trips and the changing of strings “guitar geek” stuff is the best!! Thanks for all you do!! PS that Gibson sounds amazing!!
That guitar IS awesome. The beast is beautiful. It's got New York City concrete jungle sweetness. I knew you would bring back something cool from the Big Apple. Great lesson today. Thank you.
Hey Tom, I can feel that guitar through the TH-cams. Seems like you've got a great one there. After watching you for 5 years I've noticed most of the things you do with the guitar look easier than they actually are. Cheers
I guess I fall into the group cuz that drone had me at first note. Beautiful, Uncle Larry! Love that old Banner! I still search the ol’ Reverb for those sometimes knowing that hidden gem is out there somewhere just waiting to be brought back to life
its definitely funky man....been rode HARD. it plays so good....it seems to play easier now than it did before the major surgery it recently went through
I'd love to flush the tinnitus and time travel back to when Roy Orbison first released Pretty Woman on the radio and feel/hear that mojo magic again. Love the "unplugged" Uncle Larry too of course.
@Gusbird - I remember I was in a car, in a parking lot of a store, with my parents, off of East 14 th Street, Hayward, Ca.when I first heard Roy Orbison's Pretty Woman, over the car radio. I was a little kid, but I remember it was awesome! There have been other times in vehicles this has happened, with other artists/groups, over the years. I remember hearing Chris Isaac singing Wicked Game for my 1 st time, while driving down main street one evening and I wanted to pull over to continue listening- I was Floored.
If that guitar were a puppy, the County would have taken it away. So glad it's now in your loving hands Uncle Larry! Pitchers and catchers report in about three weeks. Go Tribe! I mean Guardians...no I don't. Go Tribe!
I’ve got a ‘69 J45 that was my Grandpa’s. Thing sounds amazing. Nut is a bit thin for me but wow, sounds amazing. Not to mention it looks almost brand new. Appreciate your sharing!!
You are right about the old Kalamazoo flattops. The noises the top picks up just from your fingers when you are strumming always surprises me, and I wonder, 'well, that wouldn't sound good, move the mic back,' but they just are so responsive. Old Kalamazoo magic in a box!! Good Find, Buckeroo!
never ceases to amaze me - the difference between how "simple" chord sequences sound when they're played perfectly and accurately like you do vs the way I play them......darn......years more practice and effort required by me....must focus on doing the "simple" stuff right before I try to play more "complex" stuff.....
Tom, the other day I went to watch an old Jack Pearson video because I love that guy and I saw that you had left a glowing comment in the comments section. Cool to see.
I have a '63 Gibson (according to it's serial #) that I inherited from a late friend who used to play in the "Village" in NYC at the same time as Dylan was there. It's got a Country Western label in it, but it's had so much work, that nothing else matches a Country & Western profile. Different top w/wood binding, dot inlay fretboard, tuners, different pickguard, may not even be the original neck, in which case the serial # ain't right, But, it plays and sounds really good, and cause my old buddy gave it to me when he was about to die, I take VERY good care of it. Bought it a new case, and seeing/hearing yours makes me want to get it out and play it more. My old arthritic hands have trouble on acoustics these days, but maybe I'll put some lighter strings on.
a guitarplayer told me once, the left hand chord structures, scales , etc , you can easier learn (with the regular amount of hard long practice and education) but the left hand, the picking and strumming is where a big part of the magic comes in and is bigger struggle for the average guitar player as learning the chords and scales, it's a big part of your musical signature. was he right?
Some makers use a compensated bone at the bridge to help with acoustic intonation. I think I have found over the years that you tune the as best as you can correctly then tweak tuning the guitar to itself when you are playing chords. Fun times tuning guitars eh? Thanks UL love your videos, your playing is always inspiring.
collings makes great shit....but they are NOT the guitars that nashville songwriters want to buy after they get their first big hit...how do i know this? because i'm the guy they all call when they are trying to find a "killer old j-45"
@@501chorusecho I was just kidding with you a little since I rarely hear you mention boutique brands. Collings probably sold 50 guitars to listeners right after your video dropped this morning. I love your stories about the Nashville culture. Something I will never experience first hand so it is a treat to listen to you. That J45 you are playing does sound gooooood! Want to sell it? ;)
I've got a 1970 J-50. It's a weird one, square shoulder, 1 9/16" nut width - not typically a very desirable guitar, but it's got a vibe. It's not my main acoustic but i've pulled some songs out of it.
