Micheal Johnson: I was originally stationed in Peckham in the late sixties. We had our fair share of murders, violent robberies, rapes etc and also some assaults on police officers, medics and firefighters. I must stress, however, that there were far fewer things of this kind than there are now. Shoplifting and burglary were probably a bit more common but burglars, in my experience were completely non violent, they would would rather run away or even be nicked than attack anyone. There were very few exceptions.
I volunteered to join a new unit at Scotland Yard in the early 70s, it was to track down and arrest paedophiles; I hoped for a quick jump up the promotion ladder. I lasted only three months. We had to view images in magazines, packets sent through the post, films etc as part of the job in gathering evidence. My colleagues and I were able to arrest and charge a number of people but the sentences handed down were not what we hoped for. I also realised that, ultimately I would do serious harm to some of our captures if given the chance, so I got out.
I moved to Canada in '74 and joined the RCMP believing that the criminal justice system here might be a bit more robust. In fact I've found it to be just the same as the UK. There are fewer attacks on cops here because we've always had sidearms and very strong pepper spray, there's also greater employment so fewer kids on the razzle. There is a serious drug problem, hard drugs not pot etc which is legal here and all down the West Coast. On the whole it's much like UK but with more respect for the emergency services in general. I'm still happy to be retired though, and would be happier still if punishments fitted the crimes better.
Cheers and Happy New Year mate.

@@marklittler784 I have guns for my security, I'm an old person and a light sleeper and can't expect to otherwise overpower a determined assailant. Sadly, not everyone in UK has that option but I do advise cameras with sound, inside and out, as hidden as possible. A good alarm system, and be careful who you open your doors to. My nightmares stem from things I witnessed as a copper many years ago. Believe me, they stick with you.

@@TheDavephillips I came across a couple aged 92 & 93 still renting rooms to uni students in their large home, living alone makes you more vulnerable but a dogs a good alarm, just sometimes people can be banging on your door for help rather than to attack you, giving your door key to friends, relatives and neighbours saves them needing to knock and makes it easier to check on you.

Apparently the brother of the victim was identified by his own mother as being the man seen wearing red however he was later cleared. He has a history of violence and psychiatric problems. So either they got the killer but the case fell through or else the killer has yet to be identified. It sounds like the family still suspect the brother though.

The Sarah Melia murder is a very weird case. I just read that they arrested her brother who was a “paranoid schizophrenic obsessed with knives” . Apparently their mother recognised him on the CCTV by the way he walked and by his build and jacket. Well turns out he got proven not guilty and just in jan 2018 the mother made a public appeal to find the killer. How can she recognise him then suddenly say it’s not him. I’m very confused. Is she trying to cover up for her son now? Maybe the initial shock made her angry and wanted to get him arrested then she realised she didn’t want to lose 2 children and decided to retract her statement? It just doesn’t make sense. Anyone have any insight?

    • @generichuman2044
      @generichuman2044 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

I think it was him but two different juries were undecided and in the end everything was dropped as the case against him had gained no more evidence. I belive deep down his mother knows it is him and made the appeal so the public wouldn't forget what happened to her daughter. Truly a sad story and one that will go down as "unsolved" unless more is found to convict the brother

Anthony Mcken - the population of Bolton is over 190,000. However, if you're referring to Horwich (not "Harwich") - which is within the Metropolitan Borough of Bolton - you're absolutely correct in describing the place as a "small community".

I have said elsewhere that it was eventually perceived by the BBC ‘heads’ to have a far too accusatory tone with presenters becoming far from impartial (ie, Rav ‘the Chav’ Wilding’s cocky and arrogant stance) Moreover, it was seen as possibly prejudicing the views of jurors in forthcoming trials who had watched the programme featuring alleged offenders over whom they would subsequently be required to consider a verdict.

2021 update on the murder of Sarah Melia; Her brother who was schizophrenic was arrested and charged with her murder but was found not guilty at the trial (he no longer has anything to do with any of his family) Sarahs mum made a fresh appeal at the beginning of this year for anyone who knows anything to come forward. It's so sad that there's still no justice for her daughter.

The cases in this episode were terrible and some what unbelievable. The murder of that mother in her home and her daughter find her dead at the bottom of the stairs must have been the worst experience of her life. I really felt bad for her.
The stabbing at the Asda supermarket was comical, as mentioned by the presenters of Crimewatch, but still very serious.
The robbery at home where the couple were held hostage in thumbcuffs and having guns up their heads must have also been terrifying. They did well to cooperate to the burglars commandments, otherwise, I am sure one or both them would have been killed.
Yes, I watching this Crimewatch episode in September 2019, way over 11 years after it's original boardcast on TV. It's a long time out of date and hopefully by now all featured cases have been solved, but I still find all old Crimewatch and Crimewatch Roadshow episodes interesting to watch, what ever their age! The cases featured are very unbelievable and are terrifying to watch sometimes, even though the footage are reconstructions.

In the interview, he spoke no English, so it might not be entirely beyond the bounds of comprehension, that he didn't know how to reach out to someone.
Also, he might not've appreciated the extent of his own injuries at the time.
Receiving a hard hit, and being "out of it" for a time, might not necessarily conjure up thoughts of summoning assistance from someone that imminently.
He may only have had his own self awareness, not the awareness to see something of a "bigger picture" - a characteristic not uncommon in many third world nations.
