    Longines was the first that came with a GMT watch in 1908... My best watch complication is a date followed by a chronograph.... If you look at micro brands and don't care about history, there are a few with way better specs than the Seiko. Interesting review😀

      I agree that most of us will suffice with an office gmt. A true gmt might be overkill for some of us (not to mention, it will be very expensive). But I also think it's important to point it out to those who are keen on buying this watch

    Can't believe watch manufacturers never bothered to make a ladies' GMT watch. The SSK is 42mm. It won't look good on a lady's wrist even if she has "man hand's" ;)

      Indeed. Though I would add that being in this hobby of ours... We'd seen several contrary to the 'size convention' where smaller wrists do carry large watches well. I've met a couple n both wore the same SKXs... N they looked great... On both their wrists.

    This is my holiday watch. Works well on a Nato too (especially in cities like London.)
    I also have the Strapcode Super O-boyer "Oyster" bracelet for that extra tool versatility.
    The good thing is that you won't fear being robbed of your Seiko whilst on your travels. Rolex GMTs are awesome, but not safe to wear during global travels.

    There are two advantages of Hardlex over sapphire glass. It does not reflect as much and it does not break as quickly as sapphire glass. On the other hand, it is not as scratch-resistant as sapphire glass. And by the way, there is no "real" GMT. There are two types of GMT. Travel GMT watches and office GMT watches. Both are real GMT watches ;-)

    • @ashleytee
      @ashleytee  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the info on the Hardlex! Am still learning. Regarding the "true" and "untrue" gmt, I guess they are synonyms to the traveller & office gmt respectively? Isn't it?

    • @gg.komorebi
      @gg.komorebi ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ashleytee Hi Ashley, I think that's right.
      If you travel a lot in different time zones, then the travels GMT makes sense. However, if you work in the office and have a lot to do with colleagues in different time zones, then an office GMT is more practical than a travel GMT. What's cool, of course, is that the Seiko even has a third time zone that you can set very quickly and easily. Best Regards from Germany 🤗

    • @bricklets
      @bricklets 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think the word "true" doesn't apply to the GMT function but to the movement. Both do the same job once they are set. But the 4r34 movement is basicly the same as a the 4r36, with a GMT hand attached to the part that normally ticks over the day wheel. It's not a "true" GMT movement. I also think the higher price comes in from the bracelet and them having to make special parts they couldn't re-use from the Seiko 5 Sports line rather then the fact it's a GMT. I really don't care myself I love this watch but no matter how I look at it, a true GMT movement is easier to use, specially while "travelling" and makes more sense in the way you set it. You aren't able to adjust the time to a new timezone without leaving the GMT hand on Greenwich Mean Time, so it's not a "true" GMT movement. Also if you are really into movements and want to get something else by buying a GMT, this is just not the watch to get as its doing the exact same thing mechanically as the watch you maybe already own. To me, no matter how much I love it, the SSK is just a Seiko 5 Sports with a few different parts on it.

    today nobody is buying SKX just for look , like they do with new watches , this watch becomes very fast a classic watch and one must have in Seiko collection , in my opinion people buying it coz there is not many of them in good condition and those watches ffinally landed in closed boxes and not really on wrist's. Saing to someone who wants SKX and probably wants it for collection to buy other new watch has no point. And regular folks ,non watch collectors do not looking for SKX coz they have no idea obout this watch, coz is out of production for years already. What you says here will work only before 2019 when SKX was on sale. If I will look for SKX I will buy SKX and later on maybe this watch.

    The GMT watches were bot created becauee of airline travel. It was created to allow reading of 2 time zones for intercontinental airline pilots in the 50s-60s. So Pan Am asked Rolex to create a watch that can track pilots' home port time and local time.
    Thr problem with Seiko 5 auto movement is the widely swi ging accuracy. Their range of up to 45 seconds off a day. So you'll have to take it to a good watch repair and have it regulated on a Wisch timer.

    Seiko sells so many diferent types of watches from watches that cost 50$ and watches that cost thousends of dollars, and selling many them with hardlex glass is one from not many ways to separate those watches, it is not about money its only about diversity. Sometimes they sell watches with saphire glass below 200 and with hardlex around 500, who knows how they decide which watch will get saphire, some more special but cheap can get and most of expensive ones. And you right about this watch, this GMT for someone who collects watches for years ,this watch directly looks like future classic. You can see in first look that this watch has character and is something more than rest of Seiko 5 line.Maybe I will buy it, who knows.

    After watching your earlier review of the SNK803, I decided to get one. Since it was discontinued, it cost a lot more than what is was 1-2 years ago. I ended up getting the SRPJ87K1F, which is the replacement of the SNK803. Although it no longer has a sand blasted finish on the case and the red tip second hand, it does seem to be a more refine watch. As for this Seiko GMT, its an affordable GMT from a brand that has the history. Sure, other micro brands may give better bang for the buck, but it won't have the heritage of the SKX of which it is based on. If you don't value that, than for sure, get a micro brand GMT instead.

    • @ashleytee
      @ashleytee  ปีที่แล้ว

      I absolutely agree with you about the SRPJ87K1F. It's a fantastic upgrade, especially given the price increase for the SNK803. I probably would have done the same.
      Also, your point about micro brands is spot on. While they offer compelling options, I also see the value in the heritage that comes with established brands like Seiko. Thanks for sharing!

    Office GMT is con since everybody is saying so. If you really don’t travel, office GMT is quite useful function to track another time in the world.

      It is expensive to get a true/traveller's GMT. So within this price range, I agree that most of us are already happy with the office gmt

    I wanted to get it, but for almost 500 USD this is not a whole lot of value these days. Instead, I've ordered Pagani GMT with Seiko's nh34 movement, sapphire crystals (front and back and cyclops), loomed ceramic bezel, dial and hands and signed screwed down crown for $85 !! Now, THAT is a watch

    I liked this model watch so much that I bought the black model, the SSK001. The blue one here in the above video is the SSK003.
    Its MSRP is $475 but be smart and search for a lot lower price.
    I am a good shopper and my total cost was just $250 including free shipping and no BS sales tax. I hate paying taxes.
    Once I receive it I will update my post here.

    I prefer hardlex, very durable and it doesn't smudge and hold fingerprints like Sapphire. All my black dial watches with sapphire crystals I am constantly wiping

    Love Seiko I have my eye on a Grand Seiko quartz. This is an excellent watch beautifully designed . The only thing I dislike is the bracelet. It’s obviously a rip off of the Rolex Jubilee and I think it cheapens the watch. They should’ve just gone with a simple bracelet

    Great review! I like the "Batman" colors, that and the affordable GMT automatic movement almost got me to buy one, but am retired now, so don't really need the GMT function any more...already have a couple quartz GMT and keep my Casio F-91W set to GMT

    Hi Ashley. I really enjoyed and much appreciated your youtube review of the Seiko 5. I myself just bought the old model but brand new Seilko 5 SRPC55 yesterday. I love it and bye bye to my fitbit smart watch for 10 years. Nice to feel again the mechanical watch!

    I have this exact watch. It looks way better in person. The hardlex bezel makes the watch look more luxurious than the price indicates. Right now here in the US this watch is discounted closer to $350. That is a bargain for a GMT.

    Nice review and watch.BUT tihs movement is now in the Prospex and is showing its short comings .Its off by at least 16 seconds everyday and for a watch at that price its not good enough.And please Seiko SAPPHIRE crystal.Here is the main problem with this watch.The original SKX was an icon and could go up against bigger fish and was certified.This watch is only flash.But flash in a watch especially a cheap one is ok.

    @giovebe 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Amazing review Ashley! I am waiting for the very same blueberry one (aka Batman). Just a comment: I think that the lack of steps or "clicks" in the bezel is due to the necessity in GMT to have bidirectional movement (for + or - time zone switch), rather than unidirectional as for diving watches. People complaining are probably too much addicted to SKX?

    Seiko makes excellent and reliable movements. Which is why I buy, at a FRACTION of Seiko's price, watches from San Martin, Cronos, SteelDive, or Addiesdive. Each with a Seiko instruments (SI) movement (e.g. NH35, NH36, etc).
    As for the Seiko 5 Sports GMT, a great watch by the way...consider the STEELDIVE SD1994 V2 GMT for ~$150. OK, the SteelDive is a bit heavier that the Seiko, by about 20 grams. Why, might you ask? Well, the SteelDive uses a solid case back (as opposed to an exhibition caseback), thicker sapphire crystal, and a MILLED clasp (as opposed to Seiko's stamped metal clasp). Oh...and that solid caseback on the SteelDive is probably is related to its 200M-rated depth resistance, as opposed to Seiko's 100M. Of course, the lumed bezel on the SteelDive is also practical for a GMT. There is that.
    I do prefer the dial markers and hi polished hands on the Seiko.

    Seiko 5 series is Seiko entry level series, therefore using hardlex crystal and lower end movement. Hope that answer your question of why seiko is putting the hardlex crystal on this watch.

    I've got the limited Yuto Horigome Edition a couple of weeks ago. I'm a skateboarder myself and just had to have it. I love it and your review of it is just great. I prefer to call the "true GMT" a travelers GMT cause that already tells you for which case of use it is designed. :)

    When reviewing a watch you should review the performance of the movement. While we are aware of the time keeping specifications it would be nice to know what time it's keeping.

    I had no use for a second time zone in the 80's and for me nothing's changed. All these 4 hand watches show us how the few movement manufacturers that exist control the wristwatch industry!
