    In this video, we explore how the male dominated news media has changed over the years to become more inclusive by introducing women and other marginalised groups into it. As the medium has transformed though, it's become ever more apparent that women in particular have started to be used by news networks like Fox News and OAN, to promote ideas which work in opposition to the interests of women. We'll also be exploring new news media, such as streamers, podcasters and influencers, who have borrowed heavily from the playbook of traditional network news, creating a broad, worldwide network that weaponizes women that can appeal to a younger generation of people who harbor right wing beliefs, many of which have become far more extreme than what can be found on television.

    To be honest, I've always been shocked by the, styling, dresses and the amount of makeup female journalists wear on American TV. The men are just dressed for an office job, whereas the women - even on liberal leaning media - have to wear cocktail dresses. It's ridiculous

      I've been told my clothes weren't workplace appropriate, even though they were pretty much identical to my colleagues clothes. I brought it up with colleagues and the main difference was that I wore lots of turtlenecks and my colleagues wore v-necks, and I wore brogues and they mostly wore heels or ballerinas. Other than that we all mostly wore suit trousers and a plain-coloured long sleeve top. This was not a public facing job.
      I never changed how I dressed, because I didn't want to be uncomfortable with my clothes, and I felt this was held against me

    This video reminds me when here in Brazil the president's son said that left-wing women are ugly and right-wing women are more beautiful. And not only him but you can find this speech said by so many right-wing men and even women, like our minister Damares. It's like is very important that a woman needs a man validation for her beauty and that also makes her opinion valid. On the other hand if you are going to look at the right-wing men's appearence you can notice that they don't need to care about their appearence, just take a look in Donald Trump and Bolsonaro.

      It's sad that my first reaction to this was "okay let's round up all the beautiful leftist ladies and show them that that's false!" I'm still messed up by their insistent focus on looks.
      Anywayyy, I guess this is interesting since traditionally, women needed to put a lot more into their appearance than men. So of course on the right we'd still see the 1950s standard for women and men. And of course they'd see that as a good thing. Ugh.

It's still an effort to move my first reactions away from "We need to expand the standard of beauty" (which is true on it's own) to "a person's (mostly afabs) opinion/credibility/worth does not rest on whether or not you or anyone else finds them attractive". I feel sick to myself when I realize that every time I go "she's pretty too!" as a way to somehow defend women who don't fit into the strict beauty standards against people who just attack a woman's looks without addressing anything she has to say, all I'm doing is renforcing that her looks matter more than what she's said, or that her looks are at all important compared to her education or expertise on the matter she is speaking to.

    I think reason women or other people from marginalized groups would be willing risk having their right stripped for money, is simply because if you are rich enough you can have whatever rights you want. Money creates a safe bubble for these people to run to and live in if things go bad. Their money will give them rights that they helped strip away from others of their same gender/gender identity or race or religious belief, etc.
    And well how many times have we seen a rich person get away with something that a poor person would have been put away for years for?

      @Dido Grace- So what are you now??
      The real answer should be happy with no care in the world 😬👍🏼
      The left is just as bad at weaponizing women and using their sexual orientation, race and feminist brainwashing to have most women not have their own free will without being judged or canceled to choose whatever mate, job or even clothing that they really want.
      They can fall into that manipulative trap, and sadly become demonized just for having a change of heart by people who called themselves their friends.
      So in my opinion, both sides are bad in their own way, and women should have the freedom to do whatever they want with whoever without being judged and having their lives ruined because of choices they made from their hearts.
      The same goes for us guys, back in the day, my so called friends used to tease and scrutinize me just because I was dating a girl that didn’t look pretty enough in their eyes.
      I didn’t care about those things, I cared about having chemistry and good conversations with and all around good time with.
      Some guys are just harsh in their young age, and so are girls as well, the individual is the one responsible for the type of character they have, weather good or bad, listening to their reasoning and observing their actions from afar should be the way you can really tell what type of individuals you are dealing with.
      Life is tough, there are many wolves in sheep’s clothing.

Like Malala or other very young people who did what they had to do - meaning that they said what they wanted. The idea of this grand conspiracy around her to sacrifice her only make it look like children or teens (more precisely) can't give their opinions on a political stage - which is very tiring and revolting when we are the one who will suffer the inaction of the ones now in power. This complacency, this figure of poor child manipulated by bigger than her who should be in school, is just terrible when you know what she denounces - that nobody cares about our voices, that we're told we're just exagerating and that we have no place in politics even when discussing issues affecting our future - that we are too fragile, poor children.

Capitalism's precise problems did not arise in early hunter-gatherer societies, nor in, for example, the Iroquois Federation, nor in a bunch of smaller tribal groups in precolonial Africa. I think you miss one big reason why people are doing this. People who face bigotry can react to it in two different ways. First, they can realize bigotry is systematic and the only way their life will become better is to fight together with other marginalized people and dismantle the systems that create these conditions. Other way is to become "one of the good ones" and buy into the bigotry. There's a lot of appeal in it. It feels good to be validated by the people who otherwise hate people like you, makes you feel special. The downside is that that system which upholds the bigotry won't go away and if you fall out of favor, you will be thrown under the buss. And you personally have to believe the things they say about the group you are part of. You are just one of the special ones. This is basically internalized bigotry. These people have internalized the things said about their group and so they try to mold themselves into the acceptable version of their group. And when others in their group don't try to appeal to the bigots, they blame those people for the bigotry they face. Because if you believe your group is inherently worse and the bigots are right, the only way to escape bigotry is to change yourself.
    There's also the aspect of the hierarchy. Like if you are a white woman and you uphold the white supremacist patriarchal hierarchy, you might not be at the top, but you are definitely not at the bottom. So you try to keep your position and you put down those beneath you, but also won't try to shake the position of people above you, since they have the power to strip you of the little power you have. White supremacy and patriarchy are very intertwined and most of white women you mentioned here are shilling for the patriarchy because of their racism. Similarly the other marginalized people shilling for conservatism are never the most disadvantaged in their own community. It's similar thing why often middle class people uphold classism and capitalism even though the rich fuck them over too. At least they have power over poor people.

      @karoliinalehtinen6701 3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      @@MrKmas508 I'm sorry to break it to you, but white men don't have it harder.
      Obviously there are countries today where women don't have full legal rights and are treated as more like the property of their male relatives rather than humans. But there's still massive issues in western world too. In every western country sexual violence against women is a massive problem and happens much more frequently than against men. Same goes to domestic violence. In many western countries women still don't have full bodily autonomy, and in some (USA, Poland etc.) the little autonomy they had is being stripped away right now. Denying access to contraception and abortion are ways to control women's bodies and sexuality. All these things weave into each other. Women are told their worth comes from virginity and what they can offer for men. They are told by other people (and sometimes the state) that their bodies are meant for reproduction. And when they step out of line or are perceived to do that, they are forced back with physical and sexual violence.
      This is patriarchy. It's purpose is to control women, but as other oppressive hierarchies it hurts everyone, so even though white men might not have it harder, they don't have it great either. Another tool it has is gender roles. Women's role is to be a mother, silent and pretty, serving men. Men's role is to provide, wage war, dominate and work hard all the time. And that's leads to a lot of problems for men. Men have to be strong, so they are told "men don't cry" and discouraged from asking for help. This leads to a lot of mental health issues which are never properly treated, which is why men have much higher success rate for suicide. It also leads to men doing dangerous jobs. In many countries enlistment to army is only possible for men and/or only mandatory for men, which are both unequal civil rights violations. The issues men and women face are not in conflict with each other, they come from the same root issue and we should be all working to change that.
      No POC today hasn't suffered oppression? That's an absurd claim. In the USA segregation ended in the 60s, that's 70 years ago. Black kids who were taught in segregated school system are still alive. Poor education leads to poverty and in USA, where there's no social safety net, parent's poverty leads to poverty. In South Africa apartheid continued till the 90s, so only 30 years ago. In Israel apartheid against Arabs continues today. Black Ethiopian Jews are also discriminated against there. Residential Schools were used to commit genocide against Natives in Canada. Thousands of children went missing and now their graves are being found. The schools operated till 1998. Similar schools were in USA (some of them still operating in 2007), Latin America, Australia and New Zealand. Many Natives alive today are suffering from mental illness caused by the horrific abuse they faced. Another act of genocide done to Natives in recent decades is forced sterilizations and adoptions that were still going on in the 80s. Today Natives face disproportionate amount of violent crimes, especially native women, who also face disproportionate rape. In general too hate crime statistic are on the rise and has been for several years (most prominently against Muslims and Jews (who are not all POC but antisemitism is a mix of religious and ethnic/racial bigotry)). Most recently during covid hate crimes against Asians has been rising. There's much more to say about oppression of black people, including the police violence against them, but it's a whole other can of worms.

    In response to your final thoughts here, Susan Faludi wrote a lot about the motivations of anti-feminist women in Backlash. For a lot of them, it comes down to things like being strongly associated with a group or community that has strong feelings about traditional gender roles. Promoting those gender roles might not be good for women overall, but from their perspective it's good for the community and therefor good for the women who identify with it like them. The other is for the more ambitious among them, they see themselves as "not like those other women," something special and meant for great things, but the idea of gender equality undermines that sense of themselves as special, so they double down on promoting traditional gender roles that they themselves defy in order to preserve their own sense of uniqueness (these are your Phyllis Schlafly, Beverly LaHaye, or even Ayn Rand types.)

      It's a kind of "slave given the whip" situation. They might ultimately be subordinate to men in their world, but in that world *they're the highest ranking servitors*. A king among the commoners. I remember one specific argument from the people who defended traditional gender roles is because they liked being in a position of privilege (not exact words, but still like they aren't expected to go into the workforce). Other people might not want to be a home maker or be culturally expected to get a husband and kids, but they're perfectly fine with the arrangement and have something to lose if that culture collapses. If the culture loses sway, they lose influence and societal importance.
      It makes me think of that one black guy from the Invisible Man. The entire college he runs is one giant con, respectability plastered over poverty and scandal, at the top of which he stands. I actually disagree with the idea that conservative women knowingly work against their own personal interests. The interests as a class yes but on an individual level there are actually women whose main goal in life is to live a stereotypical housewife sort of existance. Totally fair. There are men who would love to be stay at home dads if given the choice. To them the fact that the one working partner household has been undermined matters way more than anything else. What they miss is that the reason the nuclear family is so hard nowadays has way more to do with class struggle and the loss of union jobs than it does progressive gender politics.

    • @gorimbaud
      @gorimbaud 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Fat Face Bork Laser If you're thinking of it as some kind of sociological term instead a proper noun it doesn't, but that isn't the way she's using it. It does mean something, it's the name of a project that went over very badly with the public and, according to her, led to her becoming a conservative commentator.
      Even in the context of the project, the name wasn't necessarily inappropriate, if a little edgelordy. It was meant to be like a crowdfunded database of suspected internet harassers. The reason no one on either side liked it was because of how easily and inevitably it would be abused to cause more and worse harassment.
      Getting too caught up in the phrase "social autopsy" and whatever inherent sense it does or doesn't make is missing the point, taking something out of context to dunk on it when there's already _so much_ you could dunk on while leaving it _in_ context, if you really wanted to. The important thing is how she distorted the story to fit the narrative she's creating. I do not doubt that she received harassment and doxxing over the Social Autopsy mess, and she obviously didn't deserve any of that just for having a bad idea on the internet, but the myth that it was perpetrated exclusively, or even primarily, by progressives is a lie she made up to serve the direction her new paychecks were coming from.

    You did a pretty thorough job of looking at this topic as a whole, but I have to disagree with your conclusions at the end where you analyze why these women do this by assuming it’s primarily about intentionally shilling for money, although that certainly has it’s place as a part of it. As a woman who grew up being taught conservative ideologies, I find that people who haven’t experienced that frequently don’t comprehend the sincerity of belief and conviction that comes from being saturated in this mindset precisely because it is understandably boggling why someone would actively promote ideas that systematically oppress them. I find that unless someone has also been through the same sh!t show of untangling intense internalized misogyny in a hyper religious group, they often don’t understand the level of disconnect and sincerity of beliefs you have to overcome to get out of it, because it’s something that it is folded into every facet of your self identity.

      @@claireyang7440 personally, I think that there are definite agendas of mainly political groups, however when it comes to actual communities, such as LGBTQ+ and etc, there is no "agenda" because there are no checklists or views you must adhere to in order to be part of the community, whereas when it comes to political PARTIES, then you have to look at your views and how they align with the views of the parties, before deciding which to join. Then, you actually do have some sort of agenda, because as a political party, you as a group have a checklist of things you want to get, that also affect every other person's lives. Whereas, a community such as LGBTQ+ mainly strive for positive change that only affects (or, rather, improves) the lives of the members of said community, and even then, you can disagree with other members on different topics. There is no checklist to adhere to, and even if it did, completing said checklist does not affect other people's lives. Same with Religious groups - a viewpoint does not become an agenda unless it is perpetuated heavily and affects people outside the community. Therefore, LGBTQ+ do not have an agenda overall, but I believe political parties such as conservatives and liberals, do. But that's just how I think about it and I might be wrong lol.

    Thought on the final thought: "do any of these women actually believe this?" I think it's probably more common than you'd think that the women in question actually do believe what they're saying (to varying degrees), because they need to. Think of two kids who grow up in an abusive household; one child thinks 'this is wrong' so they rebel and are severely punished for it. The other child watches this growing up and learns 'acting like the other kid is wrong and leads to pain, if I behave then I am good and will be rewarded' thus they start behaving the way they deem is acceptable according to the abuser and are rewarded for it; and as an adult they have completely internalized this message of what is and isn't acceptable behavior. This is kinda what it's like to be a woman sometimes. Whether explicitly told by friends and family or implicitly shown by culture (ex: 'coolgirl'=good, 'liking Twilight'=yuck) we are absorbing a message about how acceptable and valued women behave. I've always assumed that women who say things like 'only a man can be in charge' were girls who witnessed and then found affirmation and acceptance from holding such beliefs growing up, thus turning them into genuine values. And when these values are challenged, they deny/defend against all criticisms the way all of us do when the core tenants we've built our lives on are under attack.

      I think part of this assumption comes from how mind boggling it can be to someone outside of a conservative mindset how someone could actively promote ideas that put them at a disadvantage in society. It’s easy to see how someone like Tucker Carlson would promote these ideologies because they are self serving and put him on top. It’s easy to assume that they must just be brainwashed, or stupid, or being used. In reality it’s a bit more of a mixed bag. Like you point out, conservative women are fully capable of genuinely coming from a place of independent power, agency, and opinions, but the context in which those opinions were formed is oppressive and complex. Speaking from personal experience, it takes a lot of time and work to sort through that kind of indoctrination, but also doesn’t take away from the personal responsibility for harm done while still believing it.

      I believe that it comes from fearing of being "the bad type of women", the woman that isn't desired by men (which I'd like to say, doesn't exist because everybody got their own taste ) because women are told since the beginning of times that what matters is how much men like them. "You are made for men, you aren't a person of your own, you are made to serve people, you are only an Adam's rib", that's what girls are taught even today by society and the media, even in our more progressive society that still need to bettered. Women are taught that male validation is the main role of their life and they are ready to hate themselves to please men. This is where I believe anti feminist women comes from. I wish that women understood that being independant and stopping to care all the time about what men wants isn't being selfish, it's being human. Men aren't perfect beings, they are flawed humans like us. Same for men, women aren't an extranatural species, they are deeply just like you, with the same feelings. Women are made to be true and epic, not pretty and subservient.

      @Fat Face Bork Laser to clarify I think their rhetoric appeals to downwardly mobile middle class men. Which is to say these men come from semi privileged backgrounds but they themselves have low career prospects. So they are low status within their own class/ peer group. I think a lot of these guys are frustrated that they do not have a lot of access to their female peers. They see these women pair up with men of similar backgrounds but with decent to good career prospects or maybe men of a higher income background. They may also see that poor women occasionally end up with their high achieving peers.They resent this dynamic because they view it as greedy without really examining why it is that women avoid them beyond just the framework of money. Feminism is a good boogeyman which is what makes the right wing commentators appealing. These commentators paint modern women with a broad brush as "feminists that still want men to pay for things." This bashing of feminism and modernity builds a fantasy where there is an era these men can go back to where they would have access to women in their peer group. What is important is that these media figures gloss over what patriarchy and a 1950s social dynamic entails for men and especially men who have low status within their peer group. The 1950s NEET or basement dweller would still have a hard time in the dating market maybe even a harder time because at least in the modern day a guy with a good personality could maybe just become a stay at home dad to a high powered career women.

Kassie actually gives advice on femininity and how to date from a traditional framework in a manner that is useful for conservative minded women while placing very high expectations on men (always date someone who makes more money than you, dont dwell on lost time, get therapy, set high expectations for yourself and others). Lauren minimizes the expectations men have to rise to in a traditional dynamic (women have too high demands for men, men mainly care about looks and youth, women are lonely because of career ).

    I live with my grandpa and he is very conservative. I've learned to usually ignore it but he said Biden is an idiot like okay whatever I dont care I disagree but he said all Kamala can do is sit and smile and I found that pretty sexist. Maybe it was unconscious sexism but it was. Women can do so much more than sit still and look pretty.

      They are trying to keep people from taking her seriously by talking about her smiling and laughing. On the other hand, if she didn't smile, they'd say she was angry. But apparently, she was able to become Vice President, so she can do more than "sit and smile" 😁 It is sad, because my in-laws have been indoctrinated with the same talking points.

    Hi, I’ve watched a few videos and I agree with a lot of your points. But just want to say that a black woman who straightens her hair is not trying to be white. I have had natural hair but have gone back to relaxed hair on two occasions because my hair is so coarse, when it grows long in its natural state I cannot comb or style it. Some people just like straight hair, like how you like to wear a beard.
    Also, I don’t sound “black” but that’s just the way I talk. The color of my skin has nothing to do with the way I speak. I have black friends who also don’t have a “black” accent and I find it insulting to expect all black people to sound a certain way. It depends on the area you grew up in and how your family speaks. Not every black person has grown up in the hood.

    • @Johnny_T779
      @Johnny_T779 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks for saying that! If I lived in the US, I would want to leave just because of all the racial preconceptions there. Its classification of people as white or black and nothing in between gives me also the creeps. I'm super - mixed, and where I live people see me as mixed, and don't expect me to act white, black, or asian, nor do they call me black because of my hair (I relax them as well, so much easier to style).
      America is bipolar, 2 political parties, 2 main racial categories, 2 classes (rich or poor), maybe this lack of nuance is the reason for the terrible social landscape there.

    • @AshleySimmons593
      @AshleySimmons593 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That comment got to me so much, especially the voice thing. You have to be really racist to the core to believe that any black person who does not speak in AAVE or "non-tone inflection" is trying to be white.
      Like do we as races genetically speak differently? Is that what it is? I thought leftists said race and genetics don't matter and don't separate us at all??

      That’s fine- that’s not the point of what he was trying to say I don’t think. He’s saying you won’t find anyone on Fox News comfortably using AAVE or wearing a (lovely) natural black hairstyle. To most of white western society, these things are still considered “unprofessional” sadly, and “unprofessional” is a cover for “we’re racist.”

    • @kuritheking

    Well said about people who don't believe in anything being dangerous and I think a lot of these women might fall in that camp, but also consider that women (cishet white women) probably feel like they are receiving a certain amount of prestige, power, and protection from "staying on the good side" of the cishet white men who run everything. There's no mistress of a conservative politician who wouldn't have access to a safe abortion regardless of how legal it is at any given point, for example.
    This is the same reason there's been a trend of some cis white gay men moving to the center-right. When you're only one or two check-boxes away from having All The Privileges, it can make much more sense, from a self-preservation standpoint, to cozy up to those who do have All The Privileges. Believing primarily in self-preservation and one's own comfort to the detriment of others may not be much, but it's definitely not belief in nothing.
    It's just very sad that they're wrong... that if the men they sell themselves out for get their way, those men will gladly take their rights away too, just like they would do to the rest of us.
