Facebook has an extraordinary amount of influence and power in the modern world, enough to sway elections in numerous countries. It also has become an extremely effective tool for external sources to manipulate users into believing lies and fake news to push their agendas. News outlets such as Fox News, OAN and various conservative right wing outlets have become prominent on Facebook, along with right wing figures such as Ben Shapiro and his site, The Daily Wire. Boomers are a generation that have become especially vulnerable to the echo chamber created in social networks like Facebook, due to the repetitive nature of how information in distributed, and how algorithms feed upon outrage. As a result, many have been radicalized by constant exposure to lies, and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has no interest in fixing the most efficient propaganda machine ever created.

I am a boomer (okay, me!) who is completely mystified by what has happened to our generation. We were the hippies, the rebellious teens who protested the Vietnam War and pointed out the hypocrisy of our elders. Now it's hard to find someone who will admit to ever having held those views. I am proud of the fact that I have maintained my basic idealism over the years, and my healthy disdain for those who have succumbed to the greed and cynicism that seems so rampant these days. People in some quarters have completely lost any capacity to recognize irony when they rant about ideals they once held themselves.

I don't understand your argument with the back breaking labor because trade and construction jobs still exist and are very prominent. But Air-conditioned office jobs were super prominent in the 60s because they've been a thing since the 40s. Fast food also saw a rise in the 60s so people were still making burgers back then. People were also paid more for their work than we are today. Go read a history book, then do some research on how wages have stagnated because they don't adjust for inflation or rate of production.

I was born right between the boomer and x generations, but always identified with x, as my mother was very boomer. However my ex-wife was a few years older, and addicted to Facebook, which I despised. In 2016 she went full alt-right, to my horror. Before this, we could talk about anything. But suddenly she started rejecting anything I said as if it came from leftist brainwashing. She wouldn't argue or debate - she just ignored everything I said, or claimed I was being intolerant. At one point she even claimed I was "mansplaining" to her - but she knew I was a feminist, and she hated feminism. One time I even saw her send a Paul Joseph Watson video to her son - PJW blamed men's relationship problems on feminists.
In the end that's why our marriage ended. I couldn't respect her racism, xenophobia, or conspiracy theories, and her refusal to engage with facts. I kept hoping she would soften up after awhile, but it hasn't happened yet, and now it's too late for us.

I get what you mean, but I feel like you saying, you're providing people with "the truth" might be a factor why you havn't been successful. I think that's exactly what makes it so difficult to counter right wing arguments, they present a simple truth, when the topic is far more complex. The result is that you have to lay down a complex situation and debunk how they are wrong on many levels and spend the time to maybe research numbers and facts, just for your comment to be ignored, or if they feel caught making a wrong argument, delete their comment and yours with it.
So since I don't have time for that, I will only reply "your opinion is clearly sexist" or something amongst those lines, without further explanation. I feel like on facebook the outcome of that is more impact and less work, since they have to figure out themselves why I would write something like that.

I hate this fake binary created in India between right and left when most of the people just want the best for India deep down in their hearts regardless of political beliefs/affiliations. But we often get caught up in clashes and name calling that we forget the core issues. Like the farmers protest came about because farmers are the group of people in our country who have been exploited since forever. These farm bills worked towards privatization and lack of legal rights for farmers to seek; this was the last straw. But still remember how we acted as a country, from calling it an 'international conspiracy to negatively portray India' to the apathy of the middle class.
We can do better but for that we have to focus on our similarities, not differences. Also, another thing I'd like to add is the people of India really like to pretend like all the religions practiced by Indians are just so opposed in ideals. But if we observe, most of them fundamentally break down into similar societal structures (for eg concerning women rights or the lack thereof, just because the law says we're equal doesn't not mean the history of sexist oppression vanishes into thin air) , I'd argue that be it Christianity, Sikhism, Hinduism, Islam any of they are not pro-autonomy of women or anti-hierarchy. Like all religions boil down to the same things yet we fight like maniacs over it. I'm sorry I'm not insulting people for being religious, I respect it. As someone who sometimes buys, repairs and sells stuff on eBay, the Marketplace is one thing I miss since I quit Facebook at the beginning of the year. Unfortunately, there are no half-measures, if you are on Facebook at all then your privacy is at severe risk.
I was thinking recently about if there is a way around this, so I could still use Facebook Marketplace reasonably anonymously without having to use anything else on there. I think if you purchased a pre-loaded mobile SIM with cash and put it into a de-Googled mobile phone (you'd need to install a custom OS such as Lineage OS on it), you could then use that phone number with a dummy email address and a pseudonym to register on Facebook.
You would need to make sure that you don't friend anyone on Facebook with that account (much of your privacy is leaked because the algorithms work out your identity by who you associate with) and just use it for the Marketplace only. You should also do that only on a desktop or laptop PC and have a specific browser that you only use for Facebook. You definitely should not use the mobile app on your phone.
I think if you did the above, you should be reasonably anonymous - although you may struggle selling items on Facebook Marketplace because people will be suspicious of someone selling from an account with no friends on it. With that said, you get the best selling prices on eBay anyway.
Just a few thoughts, I may try it myself. (I do already have a "burner" phone that I have used for other accounts already.)

That's actually a brilliant observation. I've always noticed that with any news or information that I've come across (whether it's general news or severe topics) I can never fully believe the people, the sources or the reactions and emotions that myself and other people have towards whatever it is.
Maybe it's me having been raised by people that told me to never fully trust the things and people on the internet- only to 10 years later have all those people become addicted to Facebook and have their daily life online- but since I've grown up for the last 20 years, I just don't trust anything fully any more- and it makes me feel incomplete in a way I guess; knowing that there's nothing I can feel fully be certain about I guess.

Multiple times she has sent me an article or a youtube video about a conspiracy theory and I have spent hours and hours to factcheck it. And everytime this happened I tried talking to her about it and started presenting all the reasons I found why what she sent me is simply not true and each and every time she has refused to engage with and sometimes even listen to my arguments. but also yes, my mum's partner got sucked into the facebook radicalisation rabbithole after retiring, covid accelerated the process. started saying some very uncharacteristic things, constantly trying to get my mum (who does not do facebook) to look at posts from friends that were obviously fake stories or photoshopped pictures. i only knew because mum kept telling me about what they were saying, and i told her "this sounds an awful lot like qanon", then gave her a crash course on that because she didn't know much about it.
just in time, too, as her partner was getting ready to head to dc for jan 6 with a bunch of facebook friends, led by someone who it turned out was balls-deep into qanon. i flooded my mum with info when i found out, saying it is unsafe, particularly for a jewish person with a heart condition, and they would be rubbing shoulders with known antisemitic & white supremacist groups. partner was dismissive at first, but became horrified upon learning more. decided not to go after all. phew!
partner is doing much better now, reduced time on facebook, learned about how qanon came about (they watched cullen hoback's docuseries together, which went really well), and even started questioning some long-held kneejerk reactions to words like "socialism", "communism", and "anarchism" by actually examining the theory and discovering there was a lot they agree with! took a lot of patience & compassion on my mum's part, and i will say that her partner never became outright abusive like some peoples loved ones do, and was willing to admit they were wrong/ignorant.

Instead of being overwhelmingly right wing, I hope that we're overwhelmingly left wing and constantly pushing for better working conditions, higher pay, etc. well after we're out of the workforce for decades to come.
This could for sure happen because we've grown up with such grim prospects, and been through multiple "once in a lifetime" recessions and are likely going to see more, and many of us are not going to be able to afford the life that our parents lived.
