I didn't mind KoToR as the protagonists actually had reasonable excuses for not being able to use their full strength force powers.
This one actually makes sense though for the game
@@mattkennedy9308 yeah in 2 it that your a wound in the force that was cut off from it at the end of the mandolorin wars and in 1 it was you where mind wiped so you can't remember how ( and all force powers take training to learn how to use) thou it explains how you power up so fast when in the lore it takes years of training
One of my favorite ones is DMC. Before the start of each game, Dante has to sell almost all of his incredibly destructive weapons because he's constantly broke.
In which one does this happen?
I played all games except the fifth.

@@michaelmann7816 given how Knuckles is canonically keeper of the master emerald or some such, I always figured some power inherent from that was how he managed to knock the chaos emeralds loose from sonic in the first place, and I figured the shock of getting involuntarily knocked out of super sonic mode probably stunned him for a minute
of course I didn't play the games when they were new, so the lore already existed by the time I went back to play them
@@SyfyRules in later 3d games string boss attacks cause your ring count to drop faster, so yeah your not invincible it all depends on your ring count acting as a buffer, throw in the master emerald connection and it tracks
In most games Sonic just doesn't have the emeralds anymore because reasons. In Unleashed you still have them but they've been drained of all their power and you need to restore them.
Mass Effect: You died, but you got better.
God of War: You died, but you got better.
The Force Unleashed II: You died, and you mostly didn't get better.
Gothic: You died, but you got better.
God of War: You died, but god better
One glorious day there will be a video game sequel where you were turned into a newt but you got better.
Dark Souls: You died.
Mass Effect 2, they killed you and had you dead for two years in order to set you back to square one.
Kinda surprised they didn't pick that, "You literally died" is a very catchy reason. Otoh, it'd be the third "You got exploded", so maybe better to save it for the inevitable comment edition.
Then in Mass Effect 3, you get released from jail right before the reapers hit and have to rush off planet in your ship.
@@carlsiouxfalls 3 is a bit of a mixed bag. Yeah, you lose most of your gear but you keep your skills and they raise the level cap instead.
Pretty similar story in Gothic 2.

It’s never explained in game, but I remember reading somewhere that when asked why Dante from Devil May Cry never has his weapons from previous games, the director said that because Dante is always in debt, he sells them to pay the rent for his shop. Imagine the person running around with all those devil arms

Special mention needs to be given to Link: the Faces of Evil, where the reason Link doesn't have all his gear is just because Gwonam is way too impatient to give Link a moment to gather his things before heading to Koridai.
To be fair, Link wouldn't have been able to pick up the most IMPORTANT thing he needed in Koridai - 100 snowballs.

There's an article on eurogamer from when outside xtra was announced making a joke about them now not having to pretend other consoles don't exist.

Infamous 2 had you fight the Final Boss for the first mission, give him everything you could muster with your original full powers (plus new moves from later in this game), and end up shorted out in the water after it simply wasn't enough. They did a great job of picking up where the first game left off while giving a good reason you had to develop your powers again. Namely, you saw they weren't enough yourself. But rather than having you just unlock the same abilities again, they gave you completely new powers to explore and unlock in addition to your standard set!
I've always admired the game for that.

You got REALLY piss drunk
So thats why they switched the protagonist for Risen 3. The nameless hero just didn't want to get blackout drunk for the reset again.

That's one of the more realistic scenarios that games have given us.
Yakuza Kiwami. Apparently 10 years in prison made you lose all the combat prowess which made you a literal legend in the Japanese Crime Syndicate. The way to get back the power you had 10 years ago? Get stalked and fight a one-eyed psychopath who can show up LITERALLY everywhere. Inside a car trunk, a gigantic cone, under a sewer hatch, disguising as a police officer or hostess, you name it.

What about God of War 2? All that time spent slicing through the untold demonic horde only to have Kratos stupidly funnel all his power into his sword, then get crushed by a giant stone head
Or god of war 3 where you fall into the river in hell and river styx rip all of your powers before you can swin out of it

Chains of lympus: By the end, the gods take the gauntlet and shield, and it's implied that way Kratos loses his powers by the first one
Ghost of Sparta: Your swords are new after Ares takes your's at the end of the first one
2: We will just call it "The statue incident"
3: You fall to river styx and the souls take all you powers.
2018: At the end of 3, Zeus takes away all you magic and powers
It is more due to your father killing you
And God of war 4 where he jumps to another mythology

Gotta love Ace Attorney: Justice For All where Phoenix gets hit on the head so hard he gets amnesia for the whole of the first case and everyone just kinda roles with it until the case ends and he magically gets all his memories back
And being hit in the head so hard that you didn't only pass out but also having temporary amnesia is definitely a needed trip to ER
I love Guacamelee 2's decision. You got married, had kids, got a dad bod. Getting fat is what lost all your super powers. Nice.
You can make a list of “7 reasons sequels gave for why you suck now” just from the Kingdom Hearts series alone
Ooooh I know the answers....roughly 1) in CoM you're in a castle that affects your memories. Therefore everything is done with cards. 2) in 2 you've been sleeping for about a year (Don't remember exact time frime) 3)in days you're a nobody and thus not who you were in the other games. 4) in coded you're a data replica. 5) in DDD you're in a dream during mark of mastery with no Donald or goofy. 6) in BBS it's a prequel so that explains it. 7) in 3 it's very fuzzy to me but iirc sora is trying to find a way that best suits him and more or less forgets everything. That or his new outfits abilities are not compatible with his old outfits powers.
Only game that goes against the trend in a way seems to be 0.2 considering aqua still has an end game keyblade and endgame spells.
Edit: I'm only counting the singleplayer games here. So no union/unchaind X

@@Twiganut my memory is a bit rusty so I figured I'd mess something up. It's been a while and a half since I played through any of their stories. I'm surprised I remembered what I did. I think last story mode I played through was 3 at release and still don't have the dlc. Since then I've played alot of other games.
I still think that while true losing magic could be associated with CoM in 2. I think his aging and physical growth affected him losing some of his combat abilities.
But yeah losing things in sifegames and not fully explaining them in main games can get confusing.

Rise of the Tomb Raider: Lara just didn't bring any weapons to Siberia, even when she knew Trinity would be there.
That sounds....incredibly forced and stupid
Well, to be fair she did end up in the middle of the snow with no gear, so even if she DID bring weapons, they would have been lost.

@@Janoha17 Believe it or not, that's very likely. Transporting guns cross borders isn't an easy thing... unless you're a milliona---
My favorite explanation for losing powers is simply forgetting about them, or not using them for so long that you're no longer used to them, because it means developers can stack new powers on top of the old ones, and make the old ones easier to acquire in the sequel, because your character learned them once before and has less difficulty learning them again.
Kinda like when you pick up a game you haven't played in years, and sort of forgot the controls, but once you get started it all comes back rather quickly and you can get back to your old skill level in less time, giving you more time to improve.
Love to see how Andy explains the Red Dead Redemption prequel problem. In 1907 our good John Marston has a brand new home, an inherited arsenal of guns and kit from Arthur Morgan, and a whole load of leftover money. Four years later he has nothing but a cattleman revolver, his home is all but abandoned, and he hasn't even the fifteen dollars needed to pay off the MacFarlanes' when they cured an acute case of lead poisoning.
Oh, and he has to try explaining this without blaming Uncle.
Looking at this makes me think that John Marston is an addict or the Fed's in that time we're very ruthless and cruel.
Based on Morgan Monday’s, It’s clear that in Andy’s cannon, John Marston will have spent it all on outfits and a special outbuilding to store everything in, which uncle burnt down by accident as he was trying to make his own moonshine on the side, which is how the feds tracked John back to Beachers hope.

Its kind of a reference to Spaghetti Western movies with he protag being rich in the end of the movie and then in the sequel his money dissapearing is never explained and just lost, it happened in "The Good The Bad and The Ugly" to "A Fistful Of Dollars" or "Sabata" to "Return Of Sabata"
The Metroid series could fill up this list alone.

There's a bunch of ones in the various Metroid games.. but I think my favourite is Metroid Fusion in where, simply put, Samus had to have most of her power suit surgically removed to save her from a deadly parasite.
It's probably my favourite, because the suit you have removed is still inhabited by the parasite and becomes a major threat in the rest of the game.

God of war always found practical, story driven reasons. I appreciate it. Though I've particularly enjoyed that 2 and 3 let you play as super powerful version for a little and then when it's all stripped away, you feel the loss.
It is somewhat Similiar in Infamous 2
Yeah, second game Zeus stripped you off your godhood and tricked you into draining the rest of your powers into the blade of Olympus. Second game the river Styx drained you of your powers after you fell into Hades.
How about when an interdimensional government agent takes all your weapons away because they're "government property", even the crowbar? And while he says you can keep the Hazardous Environment Suit because you earned it, when you wake up you realise he took that away too.
At least the next suit version was redesigned for comfort and utility...

Warcraft iii: The Frozen Throne. Arthas actually levels backwards in the undead campaign because the Lich King is losing his power
Notable in that instance is that Arthas is the ONLY returning hero unit in TFT that’s weakened. When Malfurion and Tyrande show up in the Night Elf Campaign, they’re still level ten and have all of their abilities maxed out as you would expect.
I think they didn't mention that one because arthas lost power step by step and in the final level he regains it anyway but yea would be nice to have pop qnd wc3 in the same video
If you wanna mention WC3, you could mention going from Level 10 Paladin down to Level 1 Death Knight. Because, you know, he grabbed a cursed sword and became undead. It's still a player shock, as a Level 10 Paladin was nigh-invincible and the Level 1 Death Knight will die to pretty much _anything_ in the first level without some minions, and it's more of a stealth mission than anything.
I was flabbergasted when I first played Brotherhood because I spent way too long trying to get the legendary armor to no avail and now it's just handed to me? And I didn't even know the health bar could be that high.
I always thought the Prince throwing away the medallion meant 2 things 1. He didn't need the sands anymore and 2 he was saying goodbye to Farah. Its her medallion and he's returning home with kaileena and basicislly saying goodbye to Farah expecting to never see again.
Also, the powers are fueled by sand, which he didn't expect to encounter again, since he wasn't planning on letting Kaileena die. So he assumed he wouldn't be able to use its powers anymore anyway.
Yeah to me it was that he thought he could finally leave all the bullshit behind and go home. The Sands of Time have given him nothing but misery so I'd fully understand him tossing the medallion when he thought it was finally over.

9:30 You know the entire reason Babylon got attacked was because the Prince reversed time to prevent things from happening. The main point of the story is that the Prince's time manipulation keeps making things worse. That's why he threw that medallion away.
Actually, he doesn't reach that realisation until later in the game, after Kaileena's death. And it's not until near the end of the game when he finds his father's body that he is forced to accept that everything bad that has happened is the result of his meddling with time.
At the start, he lets it go, because he assumes everything will be okay. He's expecting a hero's welcome with his new bride - who herself can control time anyway.
You can put the entire Kingdom Hearts series in this. There's memory loss, brain remapping, dream world reset, dark force trauma...
Yup, Kingdom Hearts uses this trope constantly.
One day, I just want the in game explanation for a drop in power to be something like "I moved out of my parent's house, so I sold some stuff so I could rent a flat, but now we can go shopping and isn't that great." or maybe "I was having a garage sale when the world ended, so now I have to try and get my awesome gear back from the zombies that bought my junk." or even "Listen, I haven't cleaned my room in a while, and trying to find everything will take too long, because we've got a fascist regime to dismantle!"
Red dead Redemption undead nighmare had something like that. You start with a few weapons because aparrently John sells his to support the farm

The last one of these options should be a thing, you could level up by gaining the willpower you need to sort out your room, unlocking the stuff that you lost, slowly decreasing the mess until at the end of the game when you’re maxed out and the room’s all lovely and clean
@@gamedifficulty_4230 The true ending is achieved by: 1. Hiring a cleaning service 2. Sending money after every three main story missions (Don't worry, the game will give you a side quest prompt. It's still missable, but it's not a total dick move.) 3. Finish the story.
If you've done it right, you get a cutscene right before the final story mission. The cleaning crew you hired has found, cleaned, and organized your weapons from the first game for you. You'll have an opportunity to save and pick your load out, and then you get to kick ass. Then you get an achievement titled "Pack Rat". If you use only the gear you had before that point to beat the boss, you get the achievement "Newer Garbage Pile". If you defeat the final boss with all over your rediscovered weapons, you get the achievement "Nostalgia Trip". If you use a mixed load out, you get the achievement "Fixer Upper". (The save point is in that room because the developers figured you would want to play the entire game again just for a slightly different boss fight for each achievement.)
Dante from Devil May Cry sells his weapons between each game because he's broke.
If you can count it as a sequel, with Yakuza 0 made one year prior, you could also say Kiryus 10 year jail sentence at the start of Yakuza Kiwami would count 🤷♂️
That's pretty reasonable, all things considered. 10 years in the slammer with nothing but mooks to plow through? Not that anyone would want to fight him after seeing him floor a group of 6, 7 guys sent in as assassins.
If anything, I'm more impressed by that police officer who took him out in one hit with a baton.

And also this power was mentioned mid-way through Episode 3. Did they not hear the tragedy of Darth Plagueis, the Wise?
Actually, the Roll weapon thing wasn't the end of the conversation. Later, in the Jungle area, Tron hacks your communications and pretends to be Roll, and claims that Roll is actually a massive thief who is basically grifting Megaman for Zenni. She brings up that all those weapon upgrades she makes can't really cost as much as they claim, and that Roll really just spends all your money on upgrading her ships.
While Megaman doesn't' properly respond and Roll never hears about it, it does ring a little suspiciously true.
The augs Adam has in DX:MD that he wasn't aware of are actually explained (slight spoiler) to NOT have been in him during the events of Human Revolution. They were put in him after the whole Panchea incident while he was unconscious after having been found in the water. There's a whole side-quest about it.

@@tonyAJ420 If I remember right it's rather strongly implied the illuminati are involved as his body was recovered from the waters around Panchea by, according to the official timeline, an illuminati controlled recovery team, before being sent to the Baltic sea facility where he got the augs.

....you're not actually the same Adam Jensen from Human Revolution. The Illuminati do recover Adam's body from Panchea, but he's very much dead. The playable character in MD is a clone with the original Adam's implanted memories, that's why all of his augs are new. You can find literal proof of this (beyond the end of Sarif's ongoing questline and the mid-credits scene at the end) in the VersaLife vault. Look for one of the crates in the corner (you can see the shape of a human torso in it with your Smart Vision), jump on top and look down so you can see the little frosted-over window on it, and toss an emp or stun grenade to get a quick look inside (provided you have emp and/or stun protection).
Sorry for the nerd rant, but this blew my mind when I found it in game. It's totally worth playing through the game again knowing this too; you notice a lot more elements throughout that tie into this subplot.

Gothic 2 did it well. A tower collapsed on you at the end of 1, destroying all your gear and wounding you severely. Your magic ore armor was destroyed, and it's the only reason you survived. Now you've lost everything to keep your life.
I was gonna write the same thing. Gothic 2 was awesome. And Night of the Raven was even better.
"Good" old wizard pal Xardas rescued you but your weapons and armor was sadly left behind.
Together with all your exp, skills, etc.
The temple collapse didn't actually happen at the end of Gothic 1. They added that in the Gothic 2 intro.
The Shadow of War one has the bonus of being accurate to the source material too. Sauron had much of his power in his Ring and that's why its destruction severely weakened him.
As a counterpoint, Banjo-Tooie had you start with all the moves that you learned in the first game, then had you learn a bunch more.
I love how Kingdom Hearts has to constantly come up with reasons why Sora is reset to level 1 every game, and the funniest part is that the reason always makes sense in the plot. Chain of Memories? his memories were reprogrammed, plus Castle Oblivion is weird anyway. KH2? his memories had to be restored which apparently didn't work perfectly. (Coded? he's in the data world, things work differently here.) (scratch that, I was a dummy and forgot that technically Coded!Sora is not the same Sora as in the rest of the series, though Data-Sora is based on... kh2 Sora? I think? I forget how Coded works) DDD? he's in the dream world, things work differently here. KH3? he nearly fell to Darkness in the previous game and lost all his powers as a result.

in case of DDD I would rather say complicated time mess that actually made the whole story of KH an unrecognizable mess. seriously, I played the game 3 times now and I still have no idea what was going on.

At least for Commander Shepherd, they just killed you. I say "just", but they suffocated you in the vacuum of space and then were burned up in retry to smash onto an alien world... and then completely rebuilt you. So I guess it's ok to take away all the cool powers.
Though I believe you get to keep at least some stuff if you import your save from the first game. I haven't played the original trilogy in a while so I forget exactly what carries over.
@@jackiechan715 You get a bonus to your Paragon/Renegade score depending on your disposition in the first game. In Legendary Edition you also get an email from your bank telling you you've been collecting interest on your account this whole time, here's 100,000 credits.

13:37 something that’s an interesting thing they did in the sequel was that not just a throwaway line, it’s actually a point of contention that the pirates attempt to use to try and convince MegaMan to join them.
After the first two, I was expecting them all to be "because explosions."

@Lizardguy Prime has always been canon, they've stated the inconsistencies are just due to the different developers. To Tanabe and Sakamoto every game is canon and theirs is the only opinion that matters (however unfortunate that turns out sometimes).

Well, most Zelda games are self-contained. Nearly every Link is a different Link from the rest. Of the few that are actual continuations, I know Link's Awakening opens with being shipwrecked and waking stranded on an island, and Majora's Mask starts off with Link getting robbed.
@@flashbaxx Adding on top of that: Phantom Hourglass starts with Link nearly drowning much like Link's Awakening, Breath of the Wild now has a prequel to justify its built-in excuse of regeneration and amnesia, and Adventure of Link... is the only one without a great excuse, actually. Oracle games are flimsy but you can actually transfer a lot of your stuff between them.
and oracle of seasons/ages actually has you carry your stuff over!

To be fair, in most Zelda games you play as different incarnations of Link in different eras and timeliness. There's no reason to expect the next Link to have all the items and skills of the previous Links at the start of each new game.

Even at full power, Cal is pretty average for a Jedi, and if Merrin is playable, then you have a new character to learn abilities with. And Cal did end the game with a pretty nasty gut wound, so he's probably on the mend.

My headcanon is that she is suffering from PTSD from the baby metroid dying for her.
Sure, you could get that from how motherhood is a theme in the game, but in my headcanon Adam is that asshole because she can't be trusted not to bomb everyone at first... then can't seem to think of turning on thermal protections without being told it is ok... then she spaces out and seems to ignore everything when in big danger.
But we don't see it because we are playing as the ptsd'ing person.
@@masteryoraerasante well the canon is ptsd, but more from losing TWO homeworlds to ridley showing up, watching two father figures (both of which turn out to have dna in her so ya...) die trying to stop ridley, and a tiny bit the sacrifice of baby. during other m shes really not in a mood to be going full out and then when ridley pulls a freaking immortal reappearance she snaps just alittle. i would too if i blew up a planet after killing the guy 5 times and he STILL shows up alive.
Destiny Two is probably my FAVORITE version of this I've ever played. Watching a place they'd taught you would always be safe burn as you see npcs you love try to protect civilians (meanwhile, freaking out about favorite npcs that you hadn't come across yet and wondering if they're okay). Then, you lose your last bit of hope as all your powers are stripped away and your weapons and armor and smashed and/or lost and you have to stealth-limp out of the city (trying to avoid enemies you would have eaten for breakfast previously).
Especially before the Shadowkeep expansion, when you always started with the campaign and were depowered for more than maybe 10 minutes.
I dunno, I didn't like the idea that my character, a literal godslayer, would leave the city with just a basic pistol in shitty armour.
My hunter was a Trials champion, that dude wouldn't have left his Eyasluna behind for anything.
I just head cannoned it that I had left my gear with banshee as he was going a custom paint job for me so I wasn’t using the same shader as everyone XD

The metroid prime trilogy (And practically all the games in the entire franchise) is the prime example of games where in each sequel you loose all your awesome powers at the start of each game

There's a clever way they did this in Watch_Dogs 2. In the first game, all the hacks and skills you use were given to Aiden by a contact of his inside DedSec, so you _should_ be able to use them in the sequel since you're in the group, right?
Actually, no. An audio-log mentions that when Blume launched ctOS 2.0, they closed all the old backdoors that the group were using to mess around in their systems. When you're spending skill points in this game, you're actually diverting resources so members of DedSec can remake the old hacks using the new protocols. It also explains why you need to steal special tech or intel from rival gangs or security companies working for Blume as they have an exploit you can use to help development.
What about Saints Row? That pre-empted the conversation by blowing you up at the end of the first game, so in the sequel you had no money, the city had been taken out of your control and you could even change gender which was an interesting starter upgrade!
When I played SR1, I would always recruit one of the random blonde female gang members at every opportunity. Which meant she was always tagging along behind everything I did. That last drive to the dock? I brought her along...
...so my headcanon retcon for Saints Row 2 is the character from the first game (Player) died in the blast. The female character I created for SR2 (Boss) was that random scrub homie who accompanied him. She didn't get a gender transition-- she got a promotion.
I don't know why I love that headcanon retcon so much, but I love it so much.

Replaying the Jedi Knight games with cheats (maxed force powers and infinite force) really makes you feel like the wizard knights I imagined force users to be growing up
Guacamelee 2 does that brilliantly. At the begining of the game Juan remembers his final battle with Calaca where Juan had all luchador skills, but it turns out that after 7 years of happy family life he has to start from square one when the Mexiverce is in danger

Samus Aran from the Metroid series ends each game with numerous beam and missle upgrades and a fully upgraded power suit in addition to the countless missle and energy tanks she picks up during her adventures yet at the start of each new game all her weapons and equipment are gone some of the ways she's lost her upgrades include being slammed into a elevator by an explosion at the start of Metroid Prime, being attacked by the Ing and Dark Samus at the beginning of Metroid Prime 2 Echoes and Metroid Prime 3 Corruption and being infected by the X parasites in Metroid Fusion. In Metroid Other M however she still possesses all her weapons and equipment but can't use them unless she's authorized to by her former commanding officer Adam Malkovich a gameplay mechanic which wasn't received very well.
How could you forget Mass Effect 2? Getting sucked out of an airlock and essentially "Dying" only to be brought back to life and rebuilt from the ground up.
Force healing has been a canonical ability for awhile, I'm pretty sure it's even mentioned in the prequels

EBF2: You kinda sorta blew up half the planet at the end of the previous game
EBF3: You thought it would be a good idea to poke a chained-up Eldritch Abomination and he puched you so hard you got reset back to Level 1
EBF4: You start off as a new character tracking down a stolen artifact, and when you encounter the usual protagonists, you mistake them for the thieves and confiscate all their items
EBF5: [spoiler alert] The villain literally reset reality
Kingdom Hearts did this as well between 1 and 2, in fact there was an entire spin-off game to explain why Sora sucks again, Chain of Memories

I'd also add Shadow Hearts II: The Covenant. By the end of Shadow Hearts, Yuri can essentially transform into literal gods. But at the start of Shadow Hearts II, he gets jabbed by a sanctified piece of mistletoe and suddenly can't perform any of his fusions. He has to relearn all of them all while looking at a creepy version of himself poking out of a tree trunk in his own soul graveyard... it makes more sense in the context of the video game.

Yeah, it might have been a first for the live-action movies, but I'm pretty sure there was at least one instance of Jedi healing in the Clone Wars series, so even in Disney-canon it's still established already. Granted, he's not wrong about the Force doing whatever they want it to, but as I recall that's literally an tenet of both Jedi and Sith philosophies: a skilled enough user can do pretty much anything.

Friend of mine pointed out that depending on how you see Darth Vader's I'm Getting In A Big Egg Now scene in Empire Strikes Back, we not only had healing in the movies, but DARK SIDE healing.

I'm pretty sure lockpicks wouldn't have made much of a difference in RE3 given that it's about you escaping a city as a civilian rather than staying indoors. And you can probably blame RE4 Leon on the government being stingy. Now Chris actually has no excuse since he's a war machine that works for himself and he should've infiltrated the code veronica island with more than a shitty pistol.
To be fair, RE4 starts out with Leon just checking out a rumor about the president’s daughter, not entering a known hot war zone, so going in fully equipped with all his gear from before would’ve been considered too extreme. I do agree with the Jill Valentine point though.

One of my favorite excuses, partly because the cutscene is so impossibly badass, is Pillars of Eternity 2, Deadfire. The excuse is that the magic soul rock statue beneath your castle, was possed by a god, who tore himself out of the ground in his new statue-bod, and decided to tear out part of your soul to fill his rock-hard abs with more soul juice.
I always liked how Bioshock 2 explained why you were playing as the best monster in the original game, but still had a challenge rescuing your daughter. You’ve been dead for ten years and everything had upgraded in the meantime!🤠
I mentioned this in the comments of another video but its more appropriate here:
In the third Neptunia game, the reason why the protagonist and her sister are low level, even if they were extremely powerful by the end of the previous game, is because there has been very little conflict in the world since then and there was little need to keep honing their skills. This is why her sister is level 10, she does some work clearing out low-level monsters outside the city, but that's mostly the only action she gets.
Your character is level 1 because she's exceedingly lazy and hasn't done anything since the end of the second game to keep her skills sharp.
My favorite is Metroid Prime 2. I highlight specifically that one because while the first one took away your powers too, the second one has you start with only _some_ of the powers from Prime 1, has them all stolen anyway, and then you find the ones you had AND the ones from Prime 1 also, within the story context of the Ing taking all your powers so it's not like you're discovering copies.
Parasite Eve 2 had Aya seal her own powers away since she didn't need them anymore and she feared that continuing to use them would turn her into the next Eve.
Shadow hearts covenant: the main character shows up in his most iconic demon form, but soon after gets stabbed by a cursed stake, which seals his powers and takes away most of his memories
Another one is from Trails in the sky second chapter. They explain that the new orbment device you get is superior to the one from the previous game but your old orbments aren’t compatible so you have to get all new ones.

@@LuunieTuunie it's been one of those non-canon things we handwave for gameplay mechanics since legends. In lore force healing existed too, but it was things like purging toxins from the body, boosting natural immune responses to disease, and speeding natural healing processes. It's never been "I'm gonna hold my hand here for a sec aaaaaaaaaand you're not dead anymore". And there's a reason for that. That being that death is supposed to be the ultimate consequence. And once death doesn't have consequences, stakes disappear. Why would I care if one of the heroes gets murdered when I know someone can just do jazz hands and everything will be fine?
How about Legend of Zelda Phantom Hourglass? You have all these super cool weapons in your arsenal at the end of Wind Waker, but accidently leave them all on the ship when you go to save Tetra in Hourglass.

The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass. As this is one of two games that's actually a direct sequel to a previous entry, it would normally feel jarring for Link to not have his hearts and tools. However, the game justifies this by having Link board the ghost ship without prepping any of his equipment, and promptly cast overboard, where nearly drowning has had the longterm effect of setting him back to 3 hearts.
Yeah, MM didn’t do such a good job explaining why young Link was suddenly back to so few hearts when he entered Termina. Zelda II is also a direct sequel from the first game, but it doesn’t explain anything either.

Ys Lacrimosa of Dana did it better. Adol was working as a sailor to pay for his adventuring expenses and then the ship sinks and all his stuff is lost.
He doesnt use money in the island anyways due nobody has any use for money in a deserted island.
Transition from Gothic 1 to Gothic 2 (I know, it's not too popular among english speaking gamers, but it's a cult classic).
The final objective of Gothic 1 is to banish a sleeping demon. Once that happens, the entire underground temple, presumably held together by that demons power, collapses and the hero is burried under the ruins. His overpowered gear keeps him alive until his mage mentor manages to teleport him out of there weeks later. The harshly abused gear is destroyed, the magic sword is left behind under the rubble, and the hero is completely malnorished.
Hated it to bits as a kid, but it's a surprsingly okay explanation. Unlike the "well, I drank really really really much" for Risen 2, like somebody already mentioned.
