I spent the best part of 2023 living in Siem Reap, having not been there since 1998.
I agree - it's a wonderful choice. Quaint, friendly, quiet, an amazing choice of (particularly foreign) food options for "very, very" cheap. A helpful supportive expat community unlike the crochetty Pattaya geezers. Long term visas are extremely easy to obtain, none of the Thai style headaches. Also no need to stop doing the travel content. Get an apartment for a couple of hundred bucks a month, and use it as a base. Take off every month or so luggage-free to Vietnam, Thailand, even travel within Cambodia (unlike the neighboring countries, there's currently only a small handful of expats doing Cambodian content), flights to Malaysia are cheap, and loads more destinations slowly being added to the new SR airport.
A couple of suggestions - you get a staggering number of comments on here re : the drinking. People commiserating, gloating etc. But be very, very careful in Cambodia. It really does creep up on you if you fancy a tipple...lazy days and not much to do *plus* shops selling booze every 50 meters, a heavy drinking local and foreign populace, $0.50 happy hours, ring pull "free beer" prizes pulling the average price of beer down to $0.10 a can. A liter of imported scotch or vodka for as cheap as $5 or $6. All makes for not a happy liver.
Also....if you are planning on sticking around a while, it might be a good time to move away from your aversion to motorbikes/scooters. You don't need a license for under 125cc - which covers most of the mainstream bikes such as Clicks, Scoopys or PCXs. Just take it very slow and embrace the chaos and you will be fine. But it will open up a whole new world which you can't really do without your own transport - random villages and temples, beautiful countryside etc.
Once again though.....good choice. I never would have left SR, except work (and dwindling finances) beckoned. Nonetheless I will definitely be back.

I did 8 years in Thailand (speaking fluent Thai), with short trips in Laos and Malaysia. SE Asia becomes a psychological drain. Since it is not paranoia -- somebody IS trying to cheat you every day -- it wears on your soul. Plus, there will NEVER be any stability in your life in Thailand -- no permanent residency. In South America, in contrast, we have reciprocal property rights, can buy a home that is registered in our own name, and get permanent residency quickly and easily in less than two years without the Thai xeno hassle. Similar weather and cost of living (even better in some locations). My friend Nomad Elite does vlogging from South America giving exact comparisons. He also left SE Asia.

@@user-dx1mt8bs5c It's a general, friendly lead so that other expats can do their own research. Nomad Elite covers each country in detail. I don't give away my best spots or choice, lest they become too crowded and more expats drive the prices up. Sorry, I learned not to brag or spread the word too much about my own little oasis, because popularity would ruin it. There are many good places to choose from, however, with those same basic principles of reciprocity.

However I am pleased that you're thinking of settling down somewhere somewhere ie, Siam Reap, but that doesn't mean you just have to stay in Cambodia, it's easy to travel to Vietnam from there and I really think you should give Vietnam a visit instead of Thailand as you've already done Bangkok and Pattaya do death.
I know Vietnam isn't the easiest place to stay permanently regarding visas but, why let that put you off, after all its so easy to do a visa run and I just regard it as a short holiday really, anyway mate whatever you decide is going to be your new home, I wish you well and hope I meet up with you for a few beers somewhere down the line, CHEERS 🎉

Wise choice Ed. Make sure you enter Cambodia on an ‘Ordinary’ E-type visa, not the ‘T’ Tourist visa. Both are obtainable ‘on arrival’. Only the former can be extended into the 3-6-12 month ER Retirement visa. The 6-12 month visas are multiple entry too.
Maybe spend your first fortnight in Phnom Penh whilst you sort the ER Visa out. Personally I went through an agent and paid for the express service - received it back within 24 hours.

I use to have a good arrangement before Covid where I’d stay in Hua hin and go over to Pattaya by ferry for weekends. Best of both worlds then back to Sydney for summer. Great set up. I’m hoping the ferry begins again in the next few months. Let’s see if the boat begins service again ?

Hi Eddy. I think Cambodia is a good idea for a long stay. It's easy and cheap to get a long-term (retirement) visa. I will be back in Cambodia soon and I will go check out Siem Reap for my first time. I've only been to Phnom Penh. Looking forward to hearing how it goes for you in Siem Reap.

I spent a week in SR last year as part of a Singapore, Vietnam, Cambodia, mini tour. One week was enough in SR. Once you've visited the phenomenal Angkor Wat, there's not a great deal to keep one occupied. I'm a Thailand fan, myself.
It may just be the harsh lighting, but you look knackered, Ed. Rest up, take a week off the booze, and you'll be looking like a young George Clooney again😁

There is no place like home! If you are not slow slow pace of mine and you expect full service like others countries you should not live in Laos at all. Because, Laos is not a city light. For what I heard is like you are looking for a cheap hotel and no tex at all for you to stop by and enjoy your little life that you have left. Sir the country and cities of Laos 🇱🇦 is not a good place for you period! Haha 😂 Laos is not as inexpensive as people think. Remember everything is texted before it goes to Laos 🇱🇦. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and your opinion. I am going to pray for you. Hopefully you will be able to find some country and city that will satisfy your desires and dreams Amen 🙏 love from Laos 🇱🇦 ❤❤❤❤

Cheers for that Ed- hope you are managing to get a few beer free days in during a week - it does help. I have 4 on and 3 off but that Beer Lao when ice cold is moreish.
Forget Pattaya full time - its best days are behind it and it’s full of angry, dysfunctional farangs, and locals who are tired of it. There are a lot better places to settle.
Take care mate -your loyal subscribers will stick by your side.

Don't forget to do a couple of days on Koh Chang on your way down to SR bud. I know you're fond of that little paradise island. Perfect little stop off from pattaya to the Thai/Cambodia border. I did Bangsean on my way down also. Nice little town. But there wasn't much going on that I could see? Maybe I missed the action? Ban Chang was the same. People were raving about it.. but I thought it was a bit of a dive. Only my opinion of course 🤷🏻‍♂️ Enjoy mate 👍🏻

Well if u like Siam Riep go for it mate.. Thailand has more visa issues just to get more money out of you but hey u know Cambodia, so it's all good, it's cheaper albeit the infrastructure is behind Thailand but u can always go on a holiday back to Thailand or Vietnam or Laos and bring a small back pack that would do u for a week or more and get your laundry done but more importantly u can leave that bloody big suitcase behind u in the wardrobe.. Good luck and Happy Paddy's weekend 😊

Eddie. Be careful of the juice in the tropics. It gets a hold of you. Catches up to you. What do the Irish say? . The demon drink. Just saying
I regularly go to Luang Prabang for a rest from Pattaya. Love the place. The coffee , restaurant and cafes. Lovely. The two rivers meeting. Just beautiful. The isolation. Great for a week. I can get by with my limited Thai. After a week I need to get back to central pattaya. Best of both worlds?
