The third movement is a scherzo in ternary form. It begins with a rhythmic and forceful main theme, introduced by strings in pianissimo before going fortissimo in full orchestra. It quickly gives way to a lyrical, dance-like trio with dialogues between violins and violas, offering great contrast. The music is reminiscent of a bucolic Austrian peasant dance, with occasional hints of birdsongs. The scherzo then continues with a relentless force, and when the trio seems to be recapitulated, the movement ends with a ferocious coda.
The fourth movement is also written in a large-scale, modified sonata form. It opens with a rushing ostinato preceding the entrance of an epic and imperious main theme, sharing the same rhythm as the main theme of the first movement. It is contrasted by a delicate, dance-like second theme, similar as the trio of the scherzo. Follows an agitated and rhythmic third theme, deeply dramatic in nature. A peaceful transition leads us to the development, which combines and transforms the material in daring ways. A powerful climax leads us to a varied recapitulation of the themes, concluding with a grand and dramatic climax. In the final bars, a blazing fanfare announces the triumphal statement of the main theme from the first movement in trumpets, now transformed into heroic D major. The movement ends with a brilliant coda.

One of my Favorite Symphonies ever, It might be controversial but i like this better than the Fourth, although both are masterpieces. This Solti recording is the best, with Bohm, Suitner and Inbal very close.

Truly majestic. I can't find a better nickname for it than "Wagner Symphony"!

In his time he was the most unterstanded componist. I always think his symphonies must played by an organ.

Thanks for upload! This is the only symphony from Bruckner I don’t get. And boy it is loud!!! I need some help. How it “works”?

What do you mean by how it works?

@@SergioCánovasCM With every other Bruckner symphony I can tell what emotions match the music. It is not an easy thing to express those emotions in words but I’ve experienced them and that’s why music hits in the heart. Third is different, I can clearly hear the structure but symphony doesn’t work on emotional level. And it is always so near, like just add one not to the harmony and my riddle is solved, but Bruckner is like “not in my symphony”.

I'm an old geezer who has heard a large multitude of recordings of this symphony. If you can't seem to enjoy it, I suggest you try Klaus Tennstedt's 1976 recording with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. (It's on TH-cam) It is a uniquely energetic interpretation that has been my favorite Bruckner 3 for many years. I cannot guarantee it will do the job for you, but it's worth a listen.
