I might even like Milton Babbitt a little more than this (I know -- sacrilege). Babbitt transports me into a totally idiom-free zone and this one hasn't lost all its references.

This is my first encounter with Carter and I'm a Sessions man. There are a lotta Carter fanbois on the contemporary music threads and I certainly haven't made my mind up yet, but I think, just in terms of immediate impact, I like Sessions' Concerto For Piano and Orchestra better. I like the tortured atonal interactions with classicism.

Maravilla

The most densely imaginative work ever written. Not an ordinary masterpiece. A universe of sound, concentrated into 20 minutes. One could make a “big bang” analogy here.

These six poems are not overwhelming, but interesting and still pleasant to listen to. Thanks !

Perhaps this format will spread Fererro’s name. This music is wonderful and exciting.

Prokofieff 6th, Shostakovich 4th and Myaskowsky 6th are my favorite 20th century Russian's Symphonies. Period.

I really love that a contemporary work this strongly tonal and tradional is being performed and recorded. It's really encouraging. This is a very strong piece that I enjoyed from A to Z. Thompson Twins included.

From the first time I heard it, I always loved this symphony, as much I love one of Tchaikovsky or Glazunov. In my (modest) opinion the work deserves to be more known and famous. Great performance ! Thank you, also for the analysis.

Good composer. Maybe the greatest of all time? Astonishing the number of conductors that record his works. How many listeners are there out there. Does this stuff sell? In any event what a composer. The greatest ever. I would think performers love this stuff. How could they not? I used to think that i understood how some people might not enjoy this. But now not so much. All you have to do is listen. It's incredible. Delicate, lush crash bang, impeccable. It defies everything. 30 and more years im listening to Carter and it sounds fresh and vibrant. I have to think that the few of us who know it will ensure he is never forgotten. It's so obviously first rank genius that it will have to live on.

A magnificent performance by the Taneyev Quartet of this captivating and very accessible quartet with a splendid Andante Sostenuto. It can stand easily next to some of Shostakovich's quartets. As is also the case with some of his symphonies, I mean as important as those of Shostakovich. I thank you very much for the great upload of Myaskovsky's string quartets and symphonies !

The melody for the 2nd movement sounds much like the melody in the 3rd movement of Mahler's 1st symphony.

I heard a passage that reminded me of "Doctor, Doctor" by Thompson Twins at 4:00 into the recording, and it repeats at 7:00. It was too close to be a coincidence. I wonder if the pop song was an uncredited influence.

The best so far. Far more controlled writing than the first 3, nice links to motifs and more inventive orchestration.

This most enjoyable Symphony. WGS writes so Damn American. Love It. This so authentic. Sadly, he will never get yhe recognition he deserves and we all know why. But thankfully there are these recordings to hear. The painting is inappropriate but I'm focused on the music. Sure would enjoy this live. Grateful to hear this.

It doesn't get more American than this. Its serious but fun at the same time. For Me , this is my favorite of Still 5 Symphonies. Then #3. He deserves concert time and air time. Orchestration is spot on for this.

I have in my long life heard many times the third, in concert and on CD's and LP's with several conductors and orchestras. I'm just a listener and not a connoisseur. So I must say I find this a magnificent and very enjoyable performance, especially the last movement. Thank you !

Ferrero is a good composer. The music is very pleasant and entertaining, but greatness eludes him.

This is great symphony! I love angular melodies. With the exception of Aaron Copeland and Samuel Barber no other vital American composer ever gets programmed in the Concert Halls. A shame. All 8 of Piston symphonies are vital.
