Guitar Concerto No.1 "Aguedian" - Antón García Abríl
Madrid Symphony Orchestra conducted by Antón García Abril. Gabriel Estarellas as the soloist.
I - Allegro: 0:00
II - Liberamente: 10:40
III - Allegro: 22:04
García Abril's Guitar Concerto No.1 was composed in 1976, following the model established by Joaquín Rodrigo best represented in his famous "Aranjuez Concerto" of 1939. Its premiere took place on October 12 of 1978 in Mexico, performed by the Spanish National Orchestra conducted by Antoni Ros-Marbá and with Ernesto Bitetti as the guitarist. The piece is written in an accessible neorromantic language, deeply rooted in the Spanish traditions which is not surprising, considering the Spanish Guitar is seen as the national instrument. It is not known what the "Aguedian" title refers to. Not much more info is available unfortunately.
The first movement is written in a modified sonata form. It begins with a cheerful and animated main theme of Spanish flavour introduced by the orchestra, which is soon taken by the soloist an unfolded in a series of dialogues. A more lyrical second theme is introduced between the guitar and woodwinds. The dramatic reappearance of the main theme leads us to the development of the material, with barely a hint of dissonance nor drama. The music dissolves in a placid section gently dominated by the soloist, before reaching an expressive climax. An abbreviated recapitulation of the main theme is followed by a decided coda.
The second movement is structured in ternary form. It opens with a lyrical and romantic main theme introduced between soloist and orchestra, slowly unravelled in a series of dialogues. A more expressive second theme is then introduced by the flute, passing to clarinet and then the guitar shared with strings. After reaching a central climax, the main theme is recapitulated by the soloist in a varied way, then on full orchestra. The dynamic of dialogues is resumed once again, leading us to a calm coda.
The third movement is also written in a modified sonata form. It begins with a rhythmic main theme presented by the soloist, followed by a more melodic second theme on strings. It is extensively exposed before being combined with the main one in the ensuing development. Follows a virtuosic candeza for the soloist which focuses mainly on the second theme. After a brief pause, the main themes are recapitulated. A vigorous coda ends the whole work.
Picture: "Fisherwomen from Valencia" (1915) by the Spanish painter Joaquín Sorolla.
Musical analysis written by myself.

This is my first encounter with Carter and I'm a Sessions man. There are a lotta Carter fanbois on the contemporary music threads and I certainly haven't made my mind up yet, but I think, just in terms of immediate impact, I like Sessions' Concerto For Piano and Orchestra better. I like the tortured atonal interactions with classicism.

Good composer. Maybe the greatest of all time? Astonishing the number of conductors that record his works. How many listeners are there out there. Does this stuff sell? In any event what a composer. The greatest ever. I would think performers love this stuff. How could they not? I used to think that i understood how some people might not enjoy this. But now not so much. All you have to do is listen. It's incredible. Delicate, lush crash bang, impeccable. It defies everything. 30 and more years im listening to Carter and it sounds fresh and vibrant. I have to think that the few of us who know it will ensure he is never forgotten. It's so obviously first rank genius that it will have to live on.

I heard a passage that reminded me of "Doctor, Doctor" by Thompson Twins at 4:00 into the recording, and it repeats at 7:00. It was too close to be a coincidence. I wonder if the pop song was an uncredited influence.

You are too clever for having noticed that...I know just the part of the song. It seems related to the main motif and could have been coincidental but more likely intentionally referenced. Which only makes me like the piece more. There's a brief harmonic progression in one of my string quartet movements that I think may have come from Almost Paradise.

I think because he was composing instrumental music in a style highly influenced by German romanticism at a time opera was the only real way to achieve success. Also many of his pieces went unpublished and unperformed after his death, which also came right after a great stylistic swift in which romanticism was largely abandoned.
