Alfred Eric Leslie Satie (Honfleur, 17 May 1866 -- Paris, 1 July 1925) was a French composer and pianist. Starting with his first composition in 1884, he signed his name as Erik Satie.
Satie was introduced as a "gymnopedist" in 1887, shortly before writing his most famous compositions, the Gymnopédies. Later, he also referred to himself as a "phonometrograph" or "phonometrician" (meaning "someone who measures (and writes down) sounds") preferring this designation to that of "musician," after having been called "a clumsy but subtle technician" in a book on contemporary French composers published in 1911.
In addition to his body of music, Satie also left a remarkable set of writings, having contributed work for a range of publications, from the dadaist 391 to the American Vanity Fair. Although in later life he prided himself on always publishing his work under his own name, in the late nineteenth century he appears to have used pseudonyms such as Virginie Lebeau and François de Paule in some of his published writings.
Satie was a colourful figure in the early 20th century Parisian avant-garde. He was a precursor to later artistic movements such as minimalism, repetitive music and the Theatre of the Absurd.
The Gymnopédies, published in Paris starting in 1888, are three piano compositions written by French composer and pianist, Erik Satie.
These short, atmospheric pieces are written in 3/4 time, with each sharing a common theme and structure. Collectively, the Gymnopedies are regarded as the precursors to modern ambient music[citation needed] - gentle yet somewhat eccentric pieces which, when composed, defied the classical tradition. For instance, the first few bars feature a disjunct chordal theme in the bass - first, a G-major 7th in the bass, and then a B-minor chord, also in the lower register. Then comes the one-note theme in D major. Although the collection of chords at first seems too complex to be harmonious, the melody soon imbues the work with a soothing atmospheric quality.
Satie himself used the term "furniture music" to refer to some of his pieces, implying they could be used as mood-setting background music. However, Satie used this term to refer to only some of his later, 20th century compositions, without specific reference to the Gymnopédies as background music. From the second half of the 20th century on, the Gymnopédies were often erroneously described as part of Satie's body of furniture music, perhaps due to John Cage's interpretation of them.

For some reason I think this piece is what nostalgia sounds like. Not necessarily sad, but not quite happy either. Something in between, and a bit of both.

Erik was his whole life alone and died alone... he HATED when people were listening to his music as he was making it to be played in a background to enhance the mood ... but this one feels like personal piece of his loneliness and sadness being alone, heavy drinking while his life went thru his fingers..

This was on of my fathers favourite pieces, he played the record on Sunday mornings. As a child it stirred my imagination, especially around Christmas time. My Father died peacefully in his bed last week aged 88.

Whoever had the genius idea of combining Gymnopèdie with Eduard Cortes’ paintings, deserves to win the Internet. There are now enough of these videos for it to be a thing.
Cortes’ lived a long life and I love how you can see the growth of Paris through his paintings; from horse drawn carriages to sleek 1950s Buicks. If you look closely, in almost every picture there is a woman and a young girl (who grows into a young lady in later pictures) waking side by side. They were his wife and daughter.
I had the pleasure of visiting Paris for the first time last summer. I was excited, but having heard so much about it all my life, I expected it to be nice but underwhelming. I couldn’t have been more wrong. I absolutely loved Paris. And contrary to the stereotype, the vast majority of Parisians were lovely people. Thank you Satie, thank you Cortes and thank you for to the righteous people on TH-cam for posting these beautiful collages. It makes me think of the city I’m now in love with.

I think the greatest virtue of classical music is that unlike a van gogh or a monet .... these priceless works of art composed by the hands of sheer genius ..... cannot be auctioned off to the wealthiest bidder leaving only a privileged few to enjoy a great masterpiece in its original form. And THAT is no little thing.

City life, that melancholy feeling of being in proximity to so many people and yet we still feel alone. The Velvet Gentleman knew the feeling all to well.

I love that he was nicknamed the velvet gentleman. What an idiosyncrasy, to wear the same ten or so identical suits everyday for a decade.
A long time ago, when I was around 13 years old, my Dad passed away and I became an orphan and went to an orphanage because I had no other relatives that could take care of me. When I turned 18 I left the orphanage and felt completely lost. No money, no job, no perspective. In my own city except for social workers I didn't know anyone. And I came back to live in the same old apartment where I used to live poor with my father. I remember him skipping meals and pretending like he is not hungry just so he could put more food on my plate. Then soon one day I came across a photo - it was me standing in front of our building smiling but with my hand out trying to tell the person who was taking the photo not to do it, but I was clearly happy. And I tried so hard to remember when the photo was taken and who took it but I just couldn't. When I listen to Satie I always think about that photograph and that boy, I am now almost 32 years old and Satie's music makes me dream of having a conversation with my younger self. I would love to tell that boy that it's ok to cry, it's ok miss your Dad so much that you don't won't to share that feeling with anyone, you want to keep it to yourself, that it's ok to feel lonely. I would love to tell him all that and much, much more..

April 16, 2022, I was in Paris. I wandered through its streets and walked to Montmartre, the neighborhood where Erik Satie was born and lived. His house is still there, and I couldn't help but feel nostalgic when I remembered these pieces in my head.
He wasn't born in Paris but in Honfleur.
I was there in 1890. So much SAUDADE when I rerember.

This piece feels like silence. It quietly and gently covers the vulgar sound in life like cars on the street, knifes on a plate, gum chewing and other comon stuff, alowing for a peaceful appreciation of the beeing. It also sums itself, beeing ever-present. It's like air: It's needed, its full and ever-present.
I used to listen to this religiously when I lived in Las Vegas. In a way it's kind of like Paris (it even has it's own "Paris"), the bright lights, the cultural aspects, the decadent food and night life. I don't live there anymore, sadly, but this piece, especially the last part, makes me feel so happy that I had the time there that I did. I know I'll never relive that time again, but as long as I have the memories, I'm so content. Sweet memories that I'll cherish forever.
Melancholy... Life is strange. The more happy moments you have, the more you feel sad that those moments are gone. But, most of all, you lived them! And this is the kind of music that brings up some melancholy, because you don't have those moments anymore, but you were lucky enough to had the chance to live them. I was at his house in Paris, pretty close to the Sacre Coeur. A great artist, able to compose emotions using notes.

So much time has passed me by, and yet, with me has stayed these brilliant works. I first listened to Satie's music in the sixth grade and was instantly struck by the unique and beautiful sounds of his compositional style. Nearly seven years later, here I am, in my senior year of high school, still admiring this brilliant music, as many well beyond my lifetime surely shall.
That's exactly how you are supposed to feel.

The Strange thing about the Gymnopédies is that it's meant to be background music; heard but not listened to.
Satie was actually annoyed when people started listening to his playing in a café (I think) and so only wrote a few, as to him, people didn't appreciate it in the right way

In his day, his advanced viewpoint was at the cutting edge; few apparently could understand it, so avant-garde was it. At this moment in history, we today have been pummelled by many global events in our lifetimes, viewed from our own living rooms - events that have rendered us needful of his insight. I think I should have said that no man is a prophet in his own land - and in his own time. We need his perspective today, more than ever before, if only to cope with today's pressures. Today, his output for us has become less avant-garde, and more chicken-soup healing, in a way that would have amazed even himself.
Satie was just as talented as he was poor, and he was immensely poor...

Interesting you mention them all because they are so different. Im a huge fan of impressionism and stuff like satie and debussy but not a huge fan of Beethoven and other classical composer. They are great for sure it is just subjective about my taste. I could listen to impressionism for hours but classic is not mine.

This is a nostalgia inducing piece that never fails to stop me in my tracks whenever I hear this.
There are certain notes in each piece that literally touch my soul with their perfection!
I can understand how this could make someone feel sad but for me, this makes me feel contemplative. This is how peace and serenity would sound if they were expressed musically.
I love this particular music, especially when I want to relax and think. Contemplate on what has been, and what may come. Absolutely soul stirring, creatively inspiring.

Y lo mejor de todo es que esta Gymnopedia empieza por lento y doloroso, Satie interpreta musicalmente los estados emocionales, te da nostalgia en tú caso vivido la experiencia con él que fue y ya no es, pero ahí esta lo lindo se guarda en el alma yo lo escucho desde mi adolescencia y nunca ha fallado el indicativo de los sentimientos detente a pensar en tú vida y tú mundo, de pronto te falta explorar más, y hasta donde llego tú ser amado te mostró un sitio y un camino distinto ahora sal a romper ese molde y reencontrarte con tu yo interno y vivir sin ataduras del pasado 0 odios, señalamientos, celos sé tú misma desnudate " en el sentido" de que te explores en tú alma, vendrán cosas mejores exitos

I like this music better than any others because you cannot tell if it's supposed to be happy, sad, or angry. The pieces combined sound like.... too good to put into words.

This is like no other classical song out there. Minor music in classical music is always seen as sad, as in the crying type. For me personally this captures depression, and I dont hear that from many other classical pieces. It's strange for some it is depressing and sad, and for others it is calming and peaceful. Long comment, but wanted to get it out there.

Personally this piece resets me emotionally and brings me back to zero, I feel as if the emotions inside me are interfering with each other to stop the ripples and bring me calmness i don't very much experience anywhere else.

Let s say for the sake of it that if satie will be forgotten, something veeery terrible must have happened, like ending world catastroph and shit. No me imagino a una mariposa rodando las cuerdas de un violín. Las gimnopedias son obras para ser tocadas exclusivamente en piano. Dejando a salvo, por supuesto, las versiones Orquestales que hiciera Debussy de algunas de ellas y que fue lo que permitió se conocieran.

I don't know who's performing these pieces but I've listened to many other artists interpretation of Satie and this set is by far my favorite. The gentle increase and decrease of tempo makes me feel like I'm walking in the park pausing every so often to notice something.

This was my Spanish tutor's second-favorite thing to listen to to ease the pain from being kicked in the balls. He died recently from a long addiction to Coke Zero and everytime I hear it it makes me think of his balls.

The first time I heard the first few notes, the face of a departed friend came into my mind. I have never been so taken by a piece of music.
This piece reminds when I went backpacking by myself through Europe after graduating college. I was in Rome, Italy. I went to a neighborhood far from tourism to get a glimpse of the daily Italian life. I came across a park, it lacked maintenance and was dry, simple with rusted iron gates. A sat to watch several men play soccer, they were laughing and even though I don’t speak Italian, i could tell were full of joyful banter. In the distance, I could hear a neighbor playing the piano in their home, a relaxing, yet touching classical piece. That was 17 years ago, a beautiful memory that I am thankful for.
