    You asked people to let you know which silver coin they always carry. Since I have only recently decided to collect coins, I've never heard of this until now, but I think I will carry a silver Florin from now on, simple because I like them!

    In 1976 a few years after I first started spending money as a child I found a 1926 shilling in my change from a ice cream van. It was classed as a 5p piece and I still have it. I use to go through the till of my parent's shop to check and see if I can find old coins and occassionally a pre-1947 silver coin turns up. Coind dealers regularly advertise they pay 7 times the value for a pre 1947 silver from your change. I think it was around 1998 when the old shilling and florin along with the larger decimal cupro nickel coins were finally withdrawn from circulation. Given how worn many of these coins are both silver and bronze I imagine they have been in circulation for a very long time. I could imagine back in the 1960s people were still using Victorian coins, likewise back in 1920s people might be still be using some George III coins a 100yrs earlier.

    Cracking video and some equally cracking shillings and florins there! Would just like to mention that F.D only means fidei defensor for men; the term for women is fidei defensatrix - little Latin grammar factoid for you 🙂

    I make some old silver coins into fobs for old pocket watch chains but the idea of carrying something so valuable around with me in a place like London puts me off, so my old coins and pocket watches stay at home for the most part. I may start carrying a Queen Victoria sixpence with me as they are said to bring good luck but I may go with a 1940 shilling or two shilling coin as they are larger and those can be replaced very easily and cheaply.

    I have just subscribed, I grew up in Kent of Irish/ French parentage, and am for many years living in Ireland, from 1928 -1968 the Irish coinage was made by the Royal Mint, when the UK went decimal in 1971 Ireland did so too with similar coinage.
    I am now in the Euro zone
    What silver coin do I carry?
    In 1982 I went on a 3 month holiday to Zimbabwe, my brother bought me a wallet (made form Elephant skin, but authenticated as legally culled) I still have it and the Rhodesia 6d from Queen Elizabeth 11 in it. The Rhodesia and South African 6d, circulated as 5c after decimalisation whereas our tanner was worth 2.5 new pence and later withdrawn. Pity!

      Hi there mr mc!
      I bought mine from a trusted seller on eBay. It was priced at around £100 however I was able to take advantage of an eBay coupon which I think got me either 20% or 25% off.
      It is a very nice coin however in hindsight I should have paid more and got a coin that had not been previously cleaned.

    UK coins are so interesting. I collect a lot of them. I have a nice 1887 coin collection. And here is my little sixpence collection. imgur.com/a/qVLSL
    Why are some of your reverses on sixpence from G VI look different? Are they not UK sixpence but from some other region?

      John A No sixpences in this video, just shillings and florins. Sixpences probably in a couple of weeks although I don't have nearly as many as you.

    George the First was always reckoned
    Vile, but viler George the Second;
    And what mortal ever heard
    Any good of George the Third?
    When from Earth the Fourth descended
    God be praised! The Georges ended!
