Personally I love collecting these! It's like you said in the video, what stories could these coins tell us? To me it doesn't matter how much they are worth in today's money, they're just interesting and part of our history, and as such, valuable in that respect.

Great video. When I used to receive ( sometimes) a shilling for pocket money and change it for 12 pennies, the purpose was to rattle them around in your pocket in front of your friends to make it sound as if you were loaded. Ah the memories.I'm all nostalgic now.

I recently bought some old silver British coins from the silver forum. It has got me started down a rabbit whole on eBay this past few weeks. I have managed to pick up some gems in eBay auctions. Some really nice condition crowns, half crowns and shillings. Considering how popular 1/4 Britannias and 1/10 Britannias are and the price people will pay for them, I am shocked those old half crowns and shillings are not more popular on the silver forum. I am basically getting way more silver and history for my money than I would buying fractional modern silver coins.

I have loads of 50% silver half-crowns. Love 'em. About 1/4 oz silver .

Thanks for the video, interesting to see some old coins too. I'm from the UK and would love to add some 'junk' silver to the stack

You can also easily get 1920 Threepences that are still sterling silver, they have a whiter yellowish look that the gungy green most worn 50% coins have. There is rumours some 1920 6ds may also be sterling. Given they were low face values, the mistakes were less lamented. Whereas all Shillings, Florins and Halfcrowns dated 1920 are known to be half silver ones.

I do not stack 1920 to 1947 (50%) silver coins because of the added volume of the non Ag component and the extra refining costs. In contrast, pre 1920 (92.5%) silver coins can be sold directly for their Stirling silver and if refined the refining costs are significantly less than refining coins with 50% silver content.

Wow, great coins there. Looking to start collecting pre 1920 half crowns although I have no idea how to spot fakes so I'm probably going to hold off on it.

I got my first one in a lot that I got off of eBay. It’s a 1914, I love it. If you can get a couple in a reasonably priced lot, then why not?

    • @primovictoria2380

The way i test them is the ding test, just tap the corner with another coin and a silver coin will have a nice long ring sound. A fake will be dull and short.

Victoria on the 1850 half crown looks a lot like Cleopatra VII on the Egyptian coins of 1stC. BC. That was the famous Cleopatra who didn't look like much evidently.

Don’t worry, I’ve managed to work out what the coin is.
    It’s a 1698 William 111 half crown.
    Also got a
1772 George 111 maundy four pence
1840 and 1855 Victoria Four pence
    1921 and 1922 George V three pence
    and also a very worn
1799 George 111 proof halfpenny. Would this be copper or bronze ?

I am starting to collect silver foreign coins from around the world. Being from America I used to only collect old American coins, but I’m really digging the European silver coins especially the Irish and British silver coins.

For the first part of 1920, they were .925 silver.Latter on in the same year they then became .500 then continued until 1946.

Ive got a dozen 92% crowns, half crowns, double florins and florins, all great designs and only one badly worn. Mine are better than those in the content.
I need a decent curtained half crown still.

You get the nicest coins. I love coins and I get the grading thing-still bothers me to seal up them up from a collector’s viewpoint. Worries me that the investment we’ve put into collecting these historical items will be turned into a “card collection” with the actual coin being secondary. Numi -I envy you a bit for the great amount of wonderful coins you’ve collected. Always good information. Have a good one, amigo.

Sorry if a daft question, but how can I date a silver English coin when it’s difficult to read the date ?
If I tried to take a photo of it, would you be able to help date it for me. ?

Tha ks for the information in the video. For someone who's starting out trying to collect some pre 1920 coins. What sort of price should we be paying for these? It seems the sales on Ebay of coin lots sell very high.

    Anything before 1920 is 92.5 Silver. Then 1920 - 1946 is 50 Silver. Anything 1947 onwards is cupro-nickel.
