It really is quite ridiculous that we can play an entire 3D scene with millions of polygons in real time, but After Effects can't play a simple, single video in real time. That same video, which can be played in real time in VLC 😲
Ikr! I kind of understand where they’re coming from - they have a program with a huge user base and they don’t want to throw the baby out with the bath water. I don’t want to speculate about engineering challenges but it does feel like Adobe has been losing ground for a decade or so.
I love the way you make your videos! They're entertaining, informative, and relaxed. I was fortunate enough during the pandemic to have already spent about two years working with Unreal as part of a project. Back then, I still had an active Cinema4D license, but not anymore. Nowadays, most of my 3D work is done in Unreal. I've found that the path in Unreal is never straightforward, but the results are always very satisfying!
Awesome video overview! I was a motion designer from 2010 - 2017, and then became a game dev (VR) using unreal engine from 2017-now. Its crazy to see these 2 worlds collide in such a cool way. And so depressing to see how little after effects has evolved since 2010 compared to unreal engine in the same time period.
I might be OCD about such things but the out of sync audio was throwing me off the entire video lol still great video and very informative. Didn't think I'd consider Unreal for motion graphics.
Nah you’re not too ocd. I only caught it after the full edit so I couldn’t face going back to resync it. I’ll make sure it’s fixed before I start chopping the next one
After Effects specializes in motion design while unreal engine does not. People arent going to download UE if it's quadruple the size just for motion graphics. The UI is also another factor. The workflow is also another. Its like trying to use Blender for video editing instead of using Premiere or Davinci Resolve. Its just going to make the process a lot more difficult than it has to be.
You are 100% correct. I come from an Apple Motion background, which is a bit faster than AE - but no silver bullets! Unreal is insane, and I got familiar with it pretty quickly. PLUS you get to learn how to make apps and games too. I will devour your Motion Graphics videos with gusto! Thank you.
Looking forward to your deep dive review! Thanks for the inspo in this video. I’m also an after effects survivor of 12+ years of use so I’m learning as much Unreal as I can.

Experimentation is always great but if I can cut down on hours of frustration all the better. Thank you for your contributions so far and I'll stay tuned! Please let me/us know if there have been any channels covering UE5 so far that you'd recommend for general UE5 world building or for mograph on it's own. TY!
2:09 You can make Plugins *"Enable by default"* Also, make your reusable assets into *"Content Pack"* which saves lot of time, you don't have to find assets then migrate assets one by one.
0:00 - 0:55 it is VERY jarring that your camera is in 30fps and your voice is asynchronous with the footage too, perhaps something to look at in future videos, cheers!
I agree about render setup being difficult in Unreal. I spent days trying to figure out why a final render didn't look like the viewport and there were so many gotcha things I needed to click or unclick and it all seemed needlessly difficult. Epic really needs to streamline that part of the workflow because it's a giant pain in the ass
Good info! While it won't help your use cases for continuing to use After Effects, if you're on a Mac, Apple's Motion is far, far closer to realtime than AE for a lot of motion graphics tasks, and for a one-off purchase of US$50 it's a bargain. It does handle vectors and you can use Pixelmator Pro to import complex vector art with every shape separate and editable. But... it's not a compositor and doesn't have a planar tracker, so it's not a complete replacement at all. Looking forward to getting more into Unreal, and thanks for making your template available.
this video comes just in the right time. I'll pay attention to the next videos you publish to check if it's worth it learning Unreal in a design perspective. I use Cinema4D + Redshift and TouchDesigner on a daily basis, and now I am wondering if I should go with Houdini or with Unreal. The part of making interactive stuff and things for interactive installations makes Unreal appealing, but the look and style of Houdini + Redshift is great.
I know nothing about UE but have managed to make so promo stuff for work in there, I just wish there was more idiot friendly guides, everything I find assumes you know something already, even the beginner stuff eventually pulls up something and talks to you like its trying to jog your memory.. I wish I had the time to just chug through
My passion for learning Unreal Engine 5.x is bigger than anything I have wanted to learn in all my life, but.... The lack of a proper professional pipeline that one can put a track and walk through is extremely difficult to find, and the more "default" way to learn is to look for arbitrary tutorials, and then look for tutorials to trouble shoot all the problems you face.... It's a really bumpy road but totally worth it in the end. Kinda getting sick from After Effects anyway.
Glad to hear you’ve got the passion - I think with software as broad as Unreal one of the biggest challenges will be staying focused on our goals. Hope you get to see them through!
Nice tutorial! i'm facing an issue with the Cloner Actor. All the parameters on the Cloner Component are blocked and it shows the folowing message below the components in Details pane: "native components are editable when declared as a property in c++ " Do you have any idea on how to fix this? tks
Just opened After Effects 24.3.0, through a video on the timeline and hit play. It played like butter. Not that your points about Unreal aren't valid, but, I don't have any problems playing a video in AE. Each tool has their use.
This is really quality content! Nicely edited, good use of sound and typography. Can't wait to see more about UE Motion Design! Btw. have you tried the UDIO AI tool yet? Beta (including 1.200 songs per month) is free. I'm totally blown away. I'm thinking about using it to create tailor-made background music for my UE videos. Just wanted to share this, cause I've noticed you've put some work into the audio track.
Thanks mate. Not so keen on Udio, still not there in terms of quality and I’m suss on the training data. Will be a long time before I prefer that over even just stock sites tbh
Not sure if you started your "deep dive" video on motion graphics in UE yet, but I wanted you to know that if I see one more video showing how to do a keyframeless mograph cloner setup like the one in this video, I'm going to lose my shit. Well, okay not really, lol. But I do hope it shows more practical motion graphics because it seems like the only videos I can find on motion graphics in UE shows this cloner setup. Looking forward to your video.
Decent mic + davinci resolve dialogue leveler is pretty much everything! I add a limiter after that in the FX to add another boost and cap but nothing crazy. Then it’s just about pushing things to get to YT’s recommended LUFS
Hi, i am new to UNREAL , but its sad there are not much beginner Motion Graphics tutorials here on youtube, there are very few but difficult ones, It would be great it there are many and easier ones to follow, who have just started to learn UnReal...Peace:)
as someone who's been using After Effects as a professional Motion Design for 7 years, I'll take every chance that I can to move away from that insanely slow and chunky piece of software 😅
you should replace fusion with after effects it is worlds most advance compositing and motion graphics tool you won't even need mocha its built in trackers are so good its lack realistic simulation and pbr rendring. its even supports usd so you can use ue blender or huodini for that
There's another user, Cobra Code, who has a great video on reducing the package size, but unfortunately due to the way that Unreal kinda manages each project it doesn't really keep them small :(
yeah i think the reason why i don't use unreal engine is because while I am wanting for one eternity to download it or get a new update. I have already moved on to the next project
Hmm depends what you mean by plugins - in terms of what Unreal plugins to enable, I’d recommend you check out my video on the motion graphics default template, there’s a link to how I set it up and lists all the plugins :-) - if you mean third party plugins like x particles is to c4d, honestly Unreal has Niagara and PCG built in and they’re working on expanding the motion design mode as we speak, so it’s pretty fully featured already. I’ll always recommend the work of Dylan Browne (cinematic oceans and lens flares) and William Faucher (easy fog) and he also recommends a few others. In terms of plugins for motion design I think there’s a few things to be excited about but yeah it might be a little while before they’re released. I’ll let you know if I come across anything good!
It's tricky, it just hasn't got the same momentum as other open source software and Nuke really captured the market. Seems like if people aren't using Nuke they're in Fusion.
I, like all Motion, am an After Effects user, but I particularly hate After and especially Adobe, which is the problem with After being so bad with optimizations and a stupid interface, when Unreal reaches the point of being able to replace After, I will be more than happy in replacing After.
Hmm you should be able to see 5.4 preview - in your epic launcher, after you click the + button next to engine versions, it might show you a card with version 5.2.1 or something lower - but next to that number there will be a dropdown arrow. Click that, and you should see the option for 5.4 preview. Then once you install that, you should be able to enable the motion design plugin
Im not a ue fan because of the slugshness to open and the overcomplicated stuff, but i hate AE, theres a serious problem of monopoly with adobe. They have one of the worst software for what people use and stills the most used. I work with it daily and I simply cant get angrier by the stupidity it is to need plugins for every aspect. Gosh, i would love to use davinci resolve for it with a full real 3d thing because of fusion, or blender who has the same advantages, maybe a lesser quality shadows, but overall its incredible what you can do or any other software than being locked in AE.

The point is that you can bring dynamic motion design in games. No other software can do that.
what plug-ins do you recommend for a someone who has worked on c4d as a motion designer and animator?

I wouldn't say After effects is a good comparison. Knowing Cinema 4d or Unreal Motion Design would never negate the need for after effects.
