Thanks for sharing, Michael. Just on a first glance, it feels a bit like Motion in a way, to animate simple text. I’ve been using AE since their Alpha version many years ago, and really dislike the whole Adobe subscription model, paying for things pro users like myself don’t need. I’ve been looking for an AE alternative and not found something powerful enough. I can see how a tool like Calvary may be useful to create some simple text animations to save some time overall, but to use along with complex animations moving around 2D elements in 3D space, or importing 3D data into a project file, Calvary just is not strong enough. I do like how you can add spreadsheet information into Calvary, but the same can be done in AE. Michael, thanks again man for sharing with all of us. I wish you the very best.
I think the features are cool. Especially the ability to import spreadsheets. But I am not fond of the yearly subscription basis. So I will stick to Fusion.
Michael - curious how you'd compare Cavalry to Apple's Motion 5 software. Some of the stuff you're talking about regarding ease of animation building feels pretty similar to Motion’s "behavior" feature (and the ability to apply behaviors to specific parameters). Motion isn't free, but isn't a subscription either. It's a one-time purchase of a very fair price for the toolset (I think only $50?). Downside is it's mac-only. That google sheets integration is VERY nifty though
I've heard a lot of good things about Motion, and I know a lot of people recommend it. I'm on Windows, so I've never had a chance to try it out, unfortunately.
Not taking anything away from Cavalry at all, but you do realize that After Effects actually comes with a whole category of text animation presets. Create your text, center it, drop Fly in from Bottom and Fade up from the Effects > Animation Presets>Text>Animate In onto your text, open advanced and change to by line for both and you are done. If you want to do it by character, word, or line, just change it in the drop down under advanced. Drag your keyframes for percentage complete to shorten or lengthen the effect, etc. A very large number of those presets work together really well, so you can combine them into some pretty complex text animations fairly quickly. Again, not taking anything away from Cavalry or your choice, but sometimes it's just being more familiar with the tool.
Thanks for informing me about this. One thing...sometimes you are pronouncing it like "Calvary," which is the name of the place where Jesus was crucified.
It is expensive, but when you consider what it is capable of doing, it saves you on a bunch of AE plugins that do simple functions. Functions that AE really should come with out of the box.
2:40 in regards to the text animation > AE has an insane amount of amazing animation presets at your disposal. With your text layer selected, double click on any of them and your text is now animated!
Awesome! Thanks for the overview, had lost sight of that software, and now that I've been successfully replacing Adobe programs for my work I'm even more excited to try it out =) Loved your energy, subscribed, thanks!
It does. The problem you may run into though is that you can't export audio unless you have the pro version. You would have to export the video and assemble the video and audio in another editor.
You can have similar automation in AE, though you have to setup and program them manually and it does take a lot of time but when done you can use the same setups for future projects.
It's such a shame that Adobe's apps always had so little competition. The legacy apps feel like relics, and I often wish for solutions that feel less sluggish. Most of the interfaces and workflows have been more or less unchanged for the last 3 decades now.
After Effects has countless extremely useful and powerful scripts and plugins. It is completely absurd to assume that you can simply replace After Effects with a new software. In addition, the integration into many software such as the obligatory Adobe suite and, for example, Cinema 4D is something that no other program, no matter how good, can simply fulfill.
are you sure I can move from the advance complex tool After Effects can offer? I was looking to something the same like how Affinity for illustrator, but cant truely find it
AE can do all of the automated text animation with Text Animators, plus it has a ton of already included presets that can be easily tweaked. That being said, Cavalry still looks like an awesome tool and I def want to try it out.

please free software for simply editable animated charts? or connected and edited with xls table or any spreadsheet software ... or plugin to after effects, thanks
In AE you can simply use a small tool like Flow, and you don't have to ease keyframes. Also Mr. Horse is very good for text effects (I was lucky I bought it for a one time price, sucks that thát tool is a monthly license now too). But Flow isn't.
When I need to control hundreds of text layers in AE, I just create one Null where base of my animation is stored and tweaked if needed, and just "copy expression only" -> "paste" code to all text layers using in-point offset and position values to randomise and offset animation the way I like or need. Exactly the way I like or need. In other words, there is automation in AE and it takes minutes to setup if you know what you're doing. Yes, you need to know basic coding, but control you have and how clean yet powerful your project can be is second to none. Also, when does ability to fine tune animation on graph editor became a neg? Cavalry ... idk, it feels like same problem with community and C4D, where toolset defines what people are doing and not the other way around. Because of that there are so much identical animations, artists, even studios. Why all those even exists, what the point or value in it is beyond me. Those who want to do stuff they want instead of software telling them what to do either fighting with given toolset in C4D finding workarounds or just switch to Blender or Houdini.
I like Cavalry, I think it's a really cool software, but in my opinion it focuses too much on abstract animations which are cool but I missed what else it needs to be able to use it in practice so it can work. In this sense, I like the Fable App much more and I felt like I could work with the tool and it wouldn't let me down.
Why is that? The biggest problem with After Effects is management and subscription. The program itself is great and, unfortunately, has no adequate replacement. Davinci costs $295 for the US or €332.75 for the EU, making animation in the form of nodes is a real torture and the free version has a lot of limitations. Cavalry is unstable and even more limited in functionality, and just like After Effects has a subscription system. The free version is so cut down that you just don’t want to use it. This is especially true for the rendering resolution. I would be very grateful to Adobe if they returned the purchase of the application at full price, as an option. And cut out all the analytical, spyware and network garbage from there. Just for fun, install a demo version of After Effects or Photoshop from ten years ago. You will see that they are great, almost flawless, stable and optimized. It's just that Adobe has been rotting from the inside ever since.
Agreed! The learning curve in AE alone is excruciating for new users; add the excessive amount of steps required to complete even simple animations that have been made more efficient by so many others and it becomes way more hassle than it’s worth.
Not doing a subscription based software ever again... Fusion is a one time purchase. I can't stand companies that pull the (big font) "monthly subscription fee" and then... Oh look... It's actually an (tiny font) annual fee. As if we're so dumb we can't divide by 12 on our own... 😅
Por la reseña en tu video, parece que Cavalry es como el Affinity de la animación, en hora buena gracias por tan excelente video, voy a empezar a aprender sobre como usarlo.
semantically speaking, it *is* a "free alternative". It just also happens to have premium capabilities available. Don't get me wrong, I hear what you're saying. I'm hoping that we're somehow moving towards a marketplace that races towards the top instead of the bottom- meaning applications offer good utility for casuals and actual professional functionality for premium.
I used to edit videos 10 years ago with sony vegas, I now started content creation again each of the tools are too complicated. I wish I could get back my sony vegas pro back 😢
Choose a program based on your workflow and never because of the subscription model. After while everyone will be on that model the more popular it gets and the requests for improvement. Just looking at this for the first time I’ll give this a try it seems there’s less work for certain animations. Keep in mind he did say for the PRO version which means it’s not free to use everything. One thing I’m looking for is great rendering times as it seems after every update, After Effects has this crazy rendering times no matter what specs you have. I’ve always said Adobe needs to do better research and come with better software and workflows
After this video one thing is for sure: I will do my utter best in life to properly pronounce Cavalry. Literally got OCD anxiety from hearing Calvary way too many times. The video topic completely took second position behind the issue of the phonetics. There is no calvarizing me! 😂
Sounds interesting, but no 3D in 2024 is a bit of a slap. With so many companies moving towards 3D motion design, it feels backwards. Sure, you can use Blender for the 3D, but sometimes doing things natively is better for control (importing .obj files) When the comes to alternatives, the question is always "what are you willing to sacrifice?" - I tried Affinity Photo and Designer, cool software but on Windows the zoom shortcut uses Ctrl instead of Alt. For some reason the developers don't want to change it. If that's the case, they can keep their software and I'll go back to Adobe. Every app uses Alt to zoom, even non-Adobe ones.
I've been following Cavalry since the beta version and still couldn't just pick it up / learn it just by trial and error... just like AE .... so I still just use Apple Motion on Mac :)
Subscription here $20, there another $20 and over there also $30 ... and sometimes you even don`t start up an application for a complete month, but you had to pay for it.
Love the alts to all Adobe progs. Still, those seeking alts to AE aren't probably that creative to start. Example, with TONS of plug-ins, scripts, and other 3rd party modules made for AE, I'm able to nail VFX not only in Motion Graphics, but still/static Graphics too. Stuff I just can't pull off in combining PS+Illustrator or any of those individually in still Graphics, I can kill it in AE quickly. When the alt software/apps are as 3rd party dev ready as the OGs, I'll dive in with yall. Til then, arbitrage, arbitrage, arbitrage. This was a great watch!
Annual fee? I would rather stay with Apple Motion. It has all the features that I can see and then 3D and seamless integration with Final Cut Pro. And Motion has a low one time payment.
I've seen so many people from the US pronounce it Calvary. Cavalry. Like the horseback soldiers ya know. CAV-AHL-REE. Sorry, just a minor annoyance. Thanks for the video. I'll try the program out.

@@zboy303 Broken Clock Syndrome, eh? 🤣
please free software for simply editable animated charts? or connected and edited with xls table or any spreadsheet software ... or plugin to after effects, thanks
AE + C4D + expressions + JS + envato templates + tons of plugins and scripts or Cavalry?
Rhetorical question.
What are the system requirements?
You had me at 2D only. Would love for a 'one time purchase option', though.
Thanks mate. I was indeed searching for AE replacement.
Autograph is more exciting to me! It also is capable of 3D and VFX, plus, it's also available on Linux!
Cavlary difficult to understand. Please make a tutorial. Thanks.
The bad part of Cavalry for me is that it is not yet a composition app like AE.
Interesting! And a free version.
as soon people realize how far behind AE is, through using other tools, using AE becomes pure agony
What do you use that makes AE a pain? I've been using Fusion but keyframing and managing timings is a gigantic pain.
@@tripplejaz totally agree
Far behind what? I still didn't see a decent replacement for AE. Genuine question
But does it have the memory leak issuesthat plague after affects?
Not doing a subscription based software ever again... Fusion is a one time purchase. I can't stand companies that pull the (big font) "monthly subscription fee" and then... Oh look... It's actually an (tiny font) annual fee. As if we're so dumb we can't divide by 12 on our own... 😅
This was much needed! Thnks for highlighting
No problem! Thanks for watching!
I'm going to try this, thank you!
please make a series of cavalry tutorial
Por la reseña en tu video, parece que Cavalry es como el Affinity de la animación, en hora buena gracias por tan excelente video, voy a empezar a aprender sobre como usarlo.
definitely got me curious about it. i do work a lot with motion graphics, both 2D and 2.5D (sometimes 3D), but i want to give this one a chance
I left when he said AND IF YOU HAVE PRO VERSION..............
Do you really think anyone will put time and energy into making good software and then release it for free?
@@jakubjezovic Exactly.. That is why he shouldn't mention A FREE ALTERNATIVE at the beginning..
Sorry I missed that. But it's freemium, so you get a lot of the functionality for free.
yeah and this statement is missing context... update values in real time??? I must be getting old because that sounds like dirty talk to me 😍
semantically speaking, it *is* a "free alternative".
Awesome men, I've got to check this out. Tha is men
Sounds interesting, but no 3D in 2024 is a bit of a slap. With so many companies moving towards 3D motion design, it feels backwards. Sure, you can use Blender for the 3D, but sometimes doing things natively is better for control (importing .obj files)
When the comes to alternatives, the question is always "what are you willing to sacrifice?" - I tried Affinity Photo and Designer, cool software but on Windows the zoom shortcut uses Ctrl instead of Alt. For some reason the developers don't want to change it. If that's the case, they can keep their software and I'll go back to Adobe. Every app uses Alt to zoom, even non-Adobe ones.
Thank U so much
I've been following Cavalry since the beta version and still couldn't just pick it up / learn it just by trial and error... just like AE .... so I still just use Apple Motion on Mac :)
A lot of these features I have already built in my AE with custom plugins and scripts.
sounds cool but after effects still have a better place and u can make really powerful motion designs by it
bro can you make a tutorial or can you suggest me some tutorial. I was looking for a free motion graphics editor and I'm new to this.
What about BMD’s Fusion.?
How does blender and Natron compare?
blender is better but quite overwhelming at first for me
Comparing Cavalry to Natron, which is better?
they are not very comparable.
cavalry is more comparable to friction
natron is more comparable to fusion
Subscription here $20, there another $20 and over there also $30 ... and sometimes you even don`t start up an application for a complete month, but you had to pay for it.
It's been 5 years since I left After Effect I am now using Davinci Resolve and it's way better then After Effect and it's free too
When they fix/improve the performance... it will be unbeatable, very, very powerful and relatively easy to learn
Okay, just move a thing from left to right and show me the motion path in Cavalry, I didn't see it.
Olive Editor has potential in the future.
When we got a version that isnt a monthly cost, ill be on board. Screw the SUBpocolypse
My eye twitching every time he said ‘Calvary’ instead of ‘Cavalry’.
I'll be definitely giving this a spin
I've seen so many people from the US pronounce it Calvary. Cavalry. Like the horseback soldiers ya know. CAV-AHL-REE.
Sorry, just a minor annoyance. Thanks for the video. I'll try the program out.
Thanks for the alternative
Fable motion is also a good option for short animations and it’s free!
I still miss the plugins and Fractal Noise :(
Can you export to Lottie?
i will try for real!
