Chris Dave has given me hope that contemporary Jazz is waking up from its long slumber since Miles' Fusion scarred many and left many others regress to historic/nostalgic Jazz. Glad to witness the 21st Century renaissance!
I like that Foley uses the slap technique - there are too many bassists that spurn it IMO, but it really works when you know how to use it. People have gotten on the alto player, but I think he's a good fit with this group. When he plays the tunes, you can hear them. He's not super flashy soloist and you can hear him make mistakes in this clip, but that's actually a GOOD thing! Humans make mistakes, machines don't. Artists know how to rebound and make something good out of them.
I gotta reiterate- Zhenya literally found out he was doing the two dates at Charlie Wright's about an hour after Chris and Foley landed in the UK. He did a great job of a mammoth task; you try hanging with these guys without any homework!
OMG. That’s an amazing fact. Thank you for sharing Danny. The creativity on display here is extraordinary. As is the ability of musicians to read one another’s intentions in the heat of the moment. I am a guitarist, and would have attended this gig even in preference to the legendary Jeff Beck at Ronnie’s. Hail to these three heroic warriors for real music, who fought for “flow” against the tide of premeditation. (“Thought is the enemy of flow” as Vinnie Colaiuta the drummer said once).
@flamingbalsac1 yeah! I found that out on another post from this show...pretty crazy that he was filling in and got as far as he did huh??? I know what you mean about "Feel" though...sometimes,he seems a little lost in the headlights.Kudos to him for standing up there with these dudes and playing at all. I would kill for the opportunity to play with these two!
Chris is playing a combination of ghost notes on snare with notes on bass drum. The two of them combined gives the false impression he is playing fast notes on bass alone.
I stand corrected. For years, I thought Bongos were the large drum while the congos were the small drum. I humbly bow and honor your corrects. Thank you.
He has achieved a different kind of success. Not monetary success but the advancement of the craft and the formation of his own distinctive style. And If I understand what your argument is, thenChris Dave is just like justin bieber in that Chris Dave is a Superstar in the drum world.
Gee, this has totally wrecked my head !!! i only just got the damn Miles version down !!! This is a bit like a modern day Ornette Coleman type vehicle.
This is too fkn crazy man. Foley and Daddy are so on point with the time. My head naturally starts bobbin to a tempo that I find in the song. But I know they're on a totally different one. I can't find it though :\
@flamingbalsac1 Alto player feels good to me. Fuck the idea of being 'black enough' for a type of music. He went hard once these guys gave him an opportunity to, and was respectful of the bond that chris and foley clearly share.
@TehWinnerz actually I think Chris is a great musician....he doesn't sound like everybody else....plus he grooves hard when he chooses to. His resume speaks volumes about him as a musician as well. If you don't like him fine....but I dig his playing. If the people at Modern Drummer magazine gave him a front cover scoop and he's featured on drummerworld...yeah who are you to say he sucks when the majority says he's a skilled player? I was trolling along with you BTW.
@TehWinnerz You sound alone here....I'll pass up your offer lolol I'll listen to saxman by the lonely island because he's been playing at the age of 2 weeks old. Jack Black said so.
"If you are playing nonsense, and your bass player is playing nonsense - that's free jazz. No offense free jazz players..." - JP Bouvet :D :P Amazing!!!
@TehWinnerz WOW!!! You just made me laugh...if you knew who Chris played for you wouldn't be saying this comment because the gigs he's played require him to be extremely solid and he's known for his innovative sense of time and pocket which isn't proven in this vid but when he's playing for artists like,Eryikah Badu,Maxwell,Kenny Garrett,Pat Metheny just to name a few he's solid. Heck he was even featured on the front cover of Modern Drummer Magazine. He's quite the seasoned musician.....
Best live clip on youtube.
11 years later this maybe one of the hardests things to happen in jazz since Miles
Chris Dave has given me hope that contemporary Jazz is waking up from its long slumber since Miles' Fusion scarred many and left many others regress to historic/nostalgic Jazz.
Glad to witness the 21st Century renaissance!
This showed up on my recommended and it's wonderfully unhinged! Punchy, dynamic, falls into a spectacular groove...
Damn, I watched this vid over 100 times. This is illegal!!!!!!!!!!!! AWESOME!!
this is like the 10th time i've watched this vid today..... i cant stop lol its to good
Makes me cry Mickey.

Back again 7 years later..still ridiculous!!
Making Miles proud..(Sco too!!)

Hell yeah, that goes off.
Music at its best
I gotta reiterate- Zhenya literally found out he was doing the two dates at Charlie Wright's about an hour after Chris and Foley landed in the UK. He did a great job of a mammoth task; you try hanging with these guys without any homework!

look how Chris Dave looks when he is playing....real smooth, like he and the musical vibe are in100pct sync...this is sick!!!!
finally this music has a band to play it!
I haven't heard from Foley since Miles Davis. Nice to see him at it!
Freakin Foley, dude. Kicking ass.
Genius. No other word!
@flamingbalsac1 yeah! I found that out on another post from this show...pretty crazy that he was filling in and got as far as he did huh???

I would kill for the opportunity to play with these two!

2:56 wowwwww. i cant help but bear my teeth its soooo rawwwwww.
CHRIS FOOT AT 4:20 HOW THE FUCK!
Chris is playing a combination of ghost notes on snare with notes on bass drum. The two of them combined gives the false impression he is playing fast notes on bass alone.
Thank you...
That has to be the crunchiest drum set i have ever heard! Dang!
I stand corrected. For years, I thought Bongos were the large drum while the congos were the small drum. I humbly bow and honor your corrects. Thank you.
i love how he's got a completely relaxed facial expression even when his chops are insane.
Chris Dave is so Bad Ass! Bass player is sick too! Love their sound
amazingggggggggggggg
So sick!
Damn, I love the stuff they play and how "out" it is. But man, once they go into an easy groove to follow it's soooooo tight!
He has achieved a different kind of success. Not monetary success but the advancement of the craft and the formation of his own distinctive style. And If I understand what your argument is, thenChris Dave is just like justin bieber in that Chris Dave is a Superstar in the drum world.
this is soooooo sick!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Chris Dave is so great....real awsome drummer....BUT STILL THERE IS NO NUMBER ONE CLEAR BEST....DO THE RESEARCH
2:57 has got to be the coolest rhythm I have ever heard.
such a great last minute job @ Zhenya
awesome
are Foley and Chris torturing Zhenya?
Super!
Man, Chris is crazy around the set!! Nice sax, i'd like to see what my man Mike Phillips is able to do with that group!!!
Gee, this has totally wrecked my head !!! i only just got the damn Miles version down !!! This is a bit like a modern day Ornette Coleman type vehicle.
these guys make the perfect combination, they should hook up that sax player with a permanent spot.
coooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool
conocimiento y libertad!
7:20 - 7:24, goddammit that is so awesome
Fuckn' freakin' amazing!!!!!
he was actually a house sax player and had to step in at the last minute. He's not a full time part of the trio.
@fnkdrmmr 3 snare drums theres one to his left too
This is too fkn crazy man.
Foley and Daddy are so on point with the time. My head naturally starts bobbin to a tempo that I find in the song. But I know they're on a totally different one. I can't find it though :\
The chas & dave trio have really changed
foley
2:36!!!!!! DIG IT.
@Jeii3000 I know, im saying this guy kicks ass. there were a lot of clowns dissing him below. I dig it a lot. his solo reminds me a lot of ornette.
i would loved to play on this with chris and foley man i can't wait till im in college and even colder
fuck not only is chris amazing but his bass buddy!
@flamingbalsac1 Alto player feels good to me. Fuck the idea of being 'black enough' for a type of music. He went hard once these guys gave him an opportunity to, and was respectful of the bond that chris and foley clearly share.
TehWinnerz It's called a syncopation, and it's supposed to sound like that mr. music degree man
@TehWinnerz actually I think Chris is a great musician....he doesn't sound like everybody else....plus he grooves hard when he chooses to. His resume speaks volumes about him as a musician as well.

I was trolling along with you BTW.
@TehWinnerz Epic Harmonies Right? :D
@Midnightpitbull2 ha! I knew you were just trollin' mate!
@TehWinnerz You sound alone here....I'll pass up your offer lolol I'll listen to saxman by the lonely island because he's been playing at the age of 2 weeks old. Jack Black said so.
I love but GAAWD THAT BASS PLAYER WAS JUST STANK! I SMELLED THE FUNK ON HIS FINGERS. WOOH!

He's quite the seasoned musician.....
the sax seemed to be lost at the end
Those r O-zone hi hats fam....
Oh!!!! God!! มึงเจ๋งว่ะ
Composed by John Scofield.
that might hurt
Yeah if the sax player got a few more rehersals in before the gig it'd be on point. But the groove from 2:21 is HEAVY
Protip: If you are sweating like mad on stage, don't wear a big hoodie.
chris daves one of the best in the game.....who else do u know can play a 19 inch ozone as a hihat...lol
@Moog167 Now Jack Black is a musician I can relate to
Why is everyone hating on the sax player, I thought he sounded good. :|
Me too!
@SANEDrummer ha ha you're mixing him up with Hub (Leonard Hubbard)
@fnkdrmmr bongos, not congas....
Bongos bruh
I don't know if Foley dug this dude on alto much!
OH FUCK
Chris Dave is playing two snare drums (one as a floor tom) and congas as his rack tom-toms along with raggedy cymbals as a hi hat. Interesting.
@richandglorious Bongos? Those rack-toms sure look like congas to me...
Hum!?
sax not quite up to it but foley & chris make up for it!
what happened to the tune?? i guess i like the original version too much
dank attack
Dig
@moto1049 It's SOOOOO Obvious TehWinnerz is a troll...lolol
@quedurance1 You are lmao
@Midnightpitbull2 prove me wrong and I will accept. I've admitted I'm wrong many times before.
Go google image search congas. . .
saxophone player have been punched after this
hmmmm they look like bongos to me
@TehWinnerz Pretentious. "i got a degree in music so I'm a critic of youtube videos of people who are more successful."
