Troy is the one with the raspy voice, Brann is the one with the high regjster, and Brent is the one with the American Southern drawl.
I second Jaguar God. But you might also like Teardrinker, Steambreather, The Motherload, Curl Of The Burl and Dry Bone Valley.

Oblivion is a good Mastodon song to check out next. It’s one of their most popular songs, has more going on than High Road, and the music video will make it easier to differentiate the three vocalists.

_High Road_ is one of their radio-friendly songs: short, relatively simple, yet catchy and driving. They can go from this to super complex/proggy stuff and everywhere in between. Troy sings the verses and Brann sings the choruses (with his own overdub harmonies in studio, while Troy and Bill usually sing the harmonies with him live).
Since you're a singer, my suggestions will only be songs where all three of them sing (ony the first two listed here also have music videos):
    - Oblivion
    - Asleep in the Deep
    - Sultan's Curse
    - Word to the Wise
    - Ancient Kingdom
    - Jaguar God
    - The Beast
    - Peace and Tranquillity

The vocals are placed just fine, because the point of mastodon are those huge sludgy riffs 😁

In this song I think Troy is doing lead. In the chorus, it sounds like Brann, Brent, and possibly Bill harmonizing on "you take the high road now" and Brann doing the rest. He has the cleanest vocals in the band.

Bill doesn't have any vocal credits on any studio albums except Blood Mountain. He provides backing vocals live but he's not on this recording. I think Troy is doing the lower harmony in the chorus. I don't hear Brent's voice in there. It might even be Brann doing the lower harmony.

Mastodon are maybe the only band that has only good (great) songs and albums. They never miss, so you really can't be disappointed with whatever you select. For perhaps the best face-peeling try Mother Puncher (live) but if you'd like to venture into their really proggy stuff, The Last Baron or Jaguar God.

  • @MillicentOak

Pretty sure all the members of Mastodon took part in the bedroom covers scene during lockdown, especially on Two Minutes to Late Night, covering everyone from Rush & Mountain, Judas Priest & Alice in Chains, Metallica & Megadeth to Kate Bush and Robyn. To be fair, they couldn't quite compete with Rob Halford & Leslie West vocally imho, but they clearly had a lot of fun doing it which was exactly what we needed at the time; and Mlny Parsonz slew the (Thin Lizzy-style) Robyn cover for those after a vocal performance.

@@SoulSingerDiscovers Well, my good woman, since you like Carmilla, you'll want to watch the Huntress video 'Sorrow,' which bleeds (yes, I meant that) sapphic, vampy erotica. Jill Janus (Huntress founder/frontwoman) is a classically trained, Soprano Coloratura who can growl the heads off bears (and not the cubbies; I mean the big, moutherfucking ones that chase you down, eviscerate you, and then bring the entrails home for hibernation decorations. Those bears!). 'Zenith' better showcases her range; but if you're after bleeding, toothy lust, Sorrow is where it's at!

The song is very compressed / brickwalled, that's why the vocals are buried. No dynamic range within the instruments. The album is rated 5 on the dynamic range data base. A good score is 10 and above.

Saw Mastodon and Tool (first time Mastodon, second time out of three for Tool) in Wembley Arena. The sound was awful and the water extortionately priced. I went and stood in a fountain afterwards, which seemed like a good idea at the time, but when I was sat on the Metropolitan line later with a long journey ahead of me I started to have second thoughts about that. One day I'll get round to seeing them again to make up for it!

Metal is all about the instruments. It's not punk or post-grunge. What I like about modern metal, is they also have good bass-balancing, which was a severe problem in 80s thrash (Slayer, Anthrax, etc. didn't know how to mix back then).
Generally, the way prog metal vocals work, is they're another instrument. They're not supposed to be 1:1 with the guitars. That's more a folk metal thing, bands such as Sabaton might use that approach.
The music vids for Mastadon often don't match the actual lyrics. For example, Blood and Thunder has clowns. The song is about a whale and Captain Ahab.

There's also a sort of trope that metal listeners are just really good at deciphering what sounds like blurry vocals to everyone else.
Idk, it's a pretty subjective thing, I guess. I tend to prefer stuff where the vocals aren't too much louder than the other instruments, or maybe even tucked in just a little. I like that epic stage-like sound, and Mastadon definitely seems to go for that, with all those layers of instrumentation.
I noticed most of my friends are more lyric-focused than instrument-focused, when it comes to music listening.

I think the band mixes the vocals back a bit because none of them wanted to be the singer. Their singer quit the band way back and they just all picked up singing to make it work and it is something they all have had to grow into.

I never got into Mastodon. I think, if I want to hear something that Mastodon wants to be, I listen to Dream Theater. Seriously, they are a bit strange to me. Like a mix of straight and brutal metal with classic progressive. It does not work for me, like ... at all ...
There are few bands that never worked for me, one is Mastodon and another one is Manowar. Quite popular, but they will never suit me. I don't say they are bad musicians - not at all, these guys are really skilled. I just don't like the music they write and play. ;-) They simply don't have the creative spark that I like to hear. (Neither Lyrics nor music)
So yeah, not much to say - I like your honest comments on it.
