    Definitely mastodons best album, and this is one of the best songs on the album. The guitar work is absolutely destructive, my fingers are down to the bone after this one. And the drummer brann is keeping the whole song so tight, many parts you could get lost but his fills keep it locked in. Beautiful balance. I love how that last leg of the song turns into a total punk rock breakdown, ties the whole feeling of running in fear of something together.

    This is by far the most challenging track Mastodon have ever produced - there's even an infamous video of Brann Dailor losing track of which measure he was on during a drum festival. It's such a fun chaotic groove and I love attempting to play it. Mastodon usually keeps in 4/4 but this is one of the rare times they deviate and they deviate at such a blitz speed you get caught in the whirlwind and just have to laugh at it.

    The whole Blood Mountain album is one of the greatest prog metal albums ever. It covers vast expanses of sonic territory from highs to lows, slow to fast, calm to intense. It's chalk full of crazy guitar work and insane drumming and some absolutely insane song writing.
    Also, this album is the 3rd in a 4 album concept theme. This album is based on the element Earth. The two before this, Remission, and then Leviathan, are based on Fire and Water respectively. And then the album after this, Crack the Skye, is based on Air.
    And yes there is a whole story for the basis of this album which we'll just say, the band have commented several times that they like to partake in hallucinogens recreationally..........so yeah lol........

    • @MrBromansa
      @MrBromansa 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Isn't Crack the Skye supposed to represent the element of Aether? That's what I recall from the making of that album anyway.

    • @ryanschindler923
      @ryanschindler923 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I mean, Air/Aether, they both work. Also, parts of the album are based on the story about the drummer's sister passing away, and her name was Skye, hence the name of the album.@@MrBromansa

    • @MrBromansa
      @MrBromansa 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ryanschindler923 I'm aware of the album name thing. And to clarify, Aether isn't the element of Air - it's the fifth element of quintessence.

    I was blown away when I first heard this album. It was my introduction to Mastodon.
    Brann Dailor is the drummer of the band but he also does a huge amount of vocals, all the while playing those perpetual fills. :D
    I think the lore is, simply, what people in prehistoric times were like. Other songs on the album describe various dinosaurs or "dragons."

  • @Slaughterhauzen
    @Slaughterhauzen หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Mastodon's songs often have that "unwieldy" quality, and I think a lot of it comes down to how they write songs. The tempo and time variations are something they feel as they write, as opposed to thinking of it like a math problem they're putting together like some prog and prog-leaning artists do. Time is arbitrary for Mastodon. It's all about feeling the ride. Nobody else builds the same kind of audio journey they do. They're a singular musical entity

    Hey hey again Bryan Mastodon has been a slow burn for me since seeing them in 2016 on the Monster Energy Mayhem Fest and some songs are hit or miss for me I like this song this bc being a drummer I hear the order in all the chaos lol And the overall tone is more prog than the then massive (but wanning still) Nu Metal scene bc their early albums are pure prog with a punk energy I really think you'd enjoy the song ASLEEP IN THE DEEP It's a mid tempo trippy rocker that showcases each of their singing abilities Not to mention the video IMHO it's the most original daring and ultimately arresting vid I've ever seen 🤘🧐✌️😎

  • @jonathanhenderson9422

    For me, this album was Mastodon's peak, where they struck the perfect balance between their early, massively heavy, bludgeoning style and their later prog leanings. This album really had it all instrumental-wise with killer songs to boot, and this track is definitely one of the highlights. I may still rank it slightly behind Leviathan if only because Leviathan just came out of nowhere at a time when I think metal was starting to stagnate, and that whole album really hit like a freight train. Blood Mountain by comparison was richer and more refined, but it was merely fulfilling the expectations Leviathan had already set. Many think they hit their peak with the next album (Crack the Skye), but for me that's the album where they started to lose the thread a bit and they've struggled ever since to get it back, only finally doing so on their last album, Hushed and Grim, which is easily one of the top 5-10 metal albums of this decade so far.

    somewhat of a concept album. hero finds a crystal skull and journeys up blood mountain to place it on top. encounters future seeing one eyed sasquatch, giants, is chased and hunted along the way.
    the album is also supposed to represent the earth element along side remission, leviathan, and crack the skye which represent the other elements fire water and air

    The drummer, Brann, has said that when he was starting out, he never jammed with a bass player, just guitarists. So he never had a bass player to "lock in" with, so he decided to do it with the guitarist. Really explains his "busy" style.

    Early Mastodon seems to be a bit like all members are going batshit crazy on their instruments, yet somehow magically doing so in sync with each other. Brann is my personal favorite drummer ever. He reminds me a little Animal from the Muppets.
