New initiates are fun 😎 Crack the Skye came out when I was in high school, but i first found them earlier when RockBand featured a song off Blood Mountain. Their later albums are awesome, but I must prefer their early concept albums, half based on the elements of fire, water, earth and æther. Still waiting on the air album, sadly (no, it's not Once More Round the Sun, unfortunately) Absolutely go all the way through their early works, you will not be disappointed, unless you dont like getting sludgier, dirtier, and heavier.
They have the best discography in metal since 2002, easily one of the most unique bands too. Listen to all their album and their cold dark place EP. So much variety in their discog.
Brann(the drummer) does the vocals during the verse, pretty wild how he does that while playing. Cool that each singer has their own parts in this song.
An incredible song, from an amazing LP by a powerful and talented band. Crack the Skye is most definitely a whole album experience. I need to add that I find their last album, Hushed and Grim is up there with Crack the Skye for me. I love when the band has allowed their more proggy elements to be unleashed more. The diversity of heavy and melodic meshed together is a thing of beauty.
Hushed and Grim is definitely the closest they've been at catching that lighting again, if a little short of it to me. But they are *so much better* live than during their CTS era, it's not even funny
I don't know, I like Hushed and Grim a lot but I think Emperor of Sand has it moments where it gets up into Crack the Skye territory too. Jaguar God gave me the same shivers I get when I listen to "The Last Baron".
I’m a late bloomer, heard this song the first time around 5 years ago and it was so different it started me on the mastodon journey, that I never left. Now they are one of my favorite bands of all time. They have their own distinctive sound.
The Melvins were a huge inspiration for Mastodon, with that low sludgy driving sound, coming out of Seattle at the same time as AiC, They've covered them too.
Its funny when someone tells me about what they hate. It makes me think..... It's like catching the bus into town, getting off at the stop and seeing an ad for guitar lessons. You then take down the number, ring the number, and scream at the person....I DONT WANT GUITAR LESSONS 😄 Keep on rocking brothers 💥🎸🥁🎸💥
Crack the Skye is my favorite Mastodon album, it's very progressive. The Czar and The Last Baron are pinnacle Mastodon for me. Oblivion is one of the weaker songs on the album in my opinion, but it's still amazing. :) Wish I could hear Judson response to Blood and Thunder or any song from Leviathan, it's totally different style, much heavier but I think he's grown to at least be able to listen to now. Great review :) P.S. None so Vile by Cryptopsy is the best technical death metal album all time \m/
Crack the Skye is an incredible album. It takes such skill to weave a narrative with twists and turns so smoothly just through the instrumentation itself and they do do it so well on this album.
My wife first got me into this band with this song. I didn't love it at first. After a few listens, with Divinations and The Czar, I slowly got into them. Then hugely. Specifically this album. Then I got into their earlier stuff which I loved. Later stuff, not so much but I love Mastodon. Seen them a few times. Love Jud mentioning ATL and Outkast. Dirty south.
I don't know if the b&w piano lead-ins are supposed to make me laugh every time, but they do. Thanks for giving us a sweet little spot to listen and ruminate on some wicked tunes.
What do you get when you have a rock guitarist, a banjo player on the other guitar, a metal bassist, jazz drummer and three of them are vocalists? Mastodon
Judson nailed this right on the head. There are very few albums for me that I feel get enriched when listening to each track from start to finish, and this is one of them. I adore this album. Whenever I think of "albums that take you on a journey" I instantly go back to this one. I love introducing people to Mastodon, and every time I do I lead them here. Judson's explanation of what the music does to you while it plays is exactly what makes it so captivating, and honestly, it's really nice to hear what I've always thought about Mastodon through someone else. Great video guys - great Patreon recommendation! Judson should seriously find a weekend to put the full album on and vibe out!
Judson's eyes scanning while listening is fun to watch. I know he's active listening, but God i wish we had captions of his thoughts in real time. Your mom.
I was marathoning a lot of your vids the other day and I thought, "they should do some more Mastodon." Perfect timing lol. I also suspect that the route to take now is to focus maybe on their more recent work from Crack the Skye to now because their older stuff is a lot more fast and aggressive by comparison and might be harder to digest.

Big Mastodon fan here and honestly I don't really care about "Blood and Thunder" (I can take it or leave it, I don't really ever put it on) so I can see why Judson wasn't impressed by it.
Judson really seemed to enjoy this one, I'm still curious to see how the Blood and Thunder video went audio issues aside. Also this song is one I can't not sing along to during parts. This album was one of my favorites and I had the cd in the cd player of my car as a fall back during my college years whenever I couldn't plug anything into the aux port. If I had to pick another song from Mastodon it would be Last Baron from this same album.
OMG I got so excited to see Mastodon but not the song I suggested, waaaaaayyyyy! lol, Good song though but you must react to MASTODON - JAGUAR GOD nest please....
LOVE Mastodon. Incredible band, especially live. Their drummer is insanely talented. Tool, Rush, Dream Theatre, as well as Queensryche were huge influences on them. Would be cool if you reacted to some vintage Queensryche. An album like Rage For Order or Promised Land (my 2 favorites) would be good starting points. Maybe even some 70's era Pink Floyd.
Listen to Vildhjarta! If you like music melting together into one. You’ll love it. Listen to the new singles dropped. Would love you watch you break it down!
Maybe lil bit heavier than Mastodon though. They are shoving amazing amount of atmosphere and feeling in their songs though. I have not heard the new single yet, should go check that out now I guess
I have a feeling it'll be a bit heavy for Judson. Their very sludgy imo. Who knows though he surprises me sometimes with what he can dig and cant. If you like Vildjharta you might like Rivers of Nihil. Heavier still, debateable, but more Tech and a bit Jazzier with their saxophone use.

The guy flies too close to the sun and the umbilical cord connecting his spirit to his body is severed. So the guys spirit is lost in time-space. He gets pulled in czarist Russia (1400s) and struggles to find his way back to his body.
One of the few bands that sound natural having multiple singers
