    For anyone on the fence about painting your firearm, i suggest this. My first time i kinda wanted to practice and not ruin a gun so I painted one of my co2 bbs guns instead. They are only like 100 bucks so wasnt worried if it came out bad but it allowed me to try techniques first. its a replica from Sig of the 226, its made of metal looks quite real and has near match in size, finish and weight. Just practice on a BB, pellet of air rifle first!

    Wicked looking gun Max! Ive painted a ton of my guns....mainly duracoat. But Ive never been brave enough to try a camo look. 99% of mine are FDE or a varient. I cant believe how well that turned out! You did it so organically too. I have zero art talent....if I tried that it wud be garbage. I do have a multicam sticker kit that someone sent me a long time ago asking for a review. I may have to work up the nerve after your job! Well done!

      Well when I started I thought I was messing it up till it started to look good. It helps to get a little practice on a board or something you don’t care about. Mostly just don’t get too fussy. We humans have a natural tendency to make everything even and perfect. So I had to fight my urges with this one.

You seem to have a pleasant demeanor, keep up the good work. I cannot believe you do not have more subscribers. Interesting method for masking the paint in a random manner. One thing is with the random camo look it's hard to go wrong! The only visual mod I've done is to bead blast the slide on my RM380 to give it the 2 tone look. Thanks for sharing you little project with us.

    • @MaxHeadspace9mm
      @MaxHeadspace9mm  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah. I know if you really think about it it’s kind of silly. A job like this on a rifle makes some sense but a pistol is probably too small for any real benefit other than looks. But it was fun and I like it. And if it wears a little bit I think I will like it even more. Crazy but it makes me happy 😃

    I like the mini-tutorial format you did here. A little background info and a voice over of the process. Something you can still do with the paint job is hit it with some sand paper, down to the black even, but just in areas of normal wear. Just an idea.

    • @MaxHeadspace9mm
      @MaxHeadspace9mm  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And it’s a good idea. I like it more and more as it wears. It’s got the look of a pistol that’s combat mission experienced.
      My next paint job over this one will be a fde with some sanding like you mentioned. I think it will be perfect then.

  • @Jarris2

    Why did you choose spray paint instead of ceracote?

    • @MaxHeadspace9mm
      @MaxHeadspace9mm  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn’t want to tear the whole thing down. But even more than that I actually like the idea that the paint on this is going to wear with time and use. This gives it a “battle proven” look that I like. And I can keep painting it into the future if I want to. Plus it keeps that rough texture from new paint that I like.
      I have ceracoted guns and they are great. But a little more permanent than I wanted on this gun.

      A laser bore sighter is handy if you want to do this at home. They aren’t expensive. I’ve seen a set on the Sportmans Outfitters website for like $20 or something crazy like that. But if you want to do it the old fashioned way like I do I take a sheet of plywood out to the countryside where it’s safe to shoot and staple a simple bulls eye target to it. I aim, putting the red dot in the center of the bulls eye and fire. If it’s hitting perfectly where I was aiming I leave it alone but that rarely ever happens. All aiming devices have either turrets that you can twist or set screws you can adjust to get your sighting system to bring your point of aim in line with your point of impact. A few clicks up or down, left or right and you are done. Keep shooting and adjusting till it’s where you want it.

      @@MaxHeadspace9mm I got a jobsmart laser/ flashlight at tractor supply co for $20 but i messed with it so much trying to adjust it that I stripped some of the screws and when I took it to the range the laser was way off and all over the place so I took it off. I got a ak slide mount that came with a really nice reflex sight for $30 on Amazon and a red dot at the pawn shop for $10. I put the slide mount and red dot on my lynx and the reflex sight on my Pak 9. Very happy with the mount and reflex .now I just have to take it to the range and c if they have a gun mount so I can zero them and c if the ak mount can handle the kick of a 12 guage

      It was overspray from a previous project in my paint booth. But seriously, pine boughs would do the same thing. I just grabbed the first random thing I had nearby. I think the most important thing is to not get too fussy with it.
      As for function I had it hang up the first time I shot it after the paint job. So I power racked it a dozen times and it’s been running like a top ever since.

      You’re very welcome. Yeah if you want a perfect, tough and durable paint job a ceracoat would be the way to go and that requires a total breakdown of the weapon. But my method is simple and fun and never gets boring because as I use it the finish wear only adds to the look. I love it!

      Yes. The first few shots wears the paint off of the areas that need to slide together to function.
      Or you can just cycle it manually a dozen times then it will work as reliably as before it’s painted.

    • @MaxHeadspace9mm
      @MaxHeadspace9mm  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fractured Hearts
      Yeah I didn’t go into much of that because there are so many right ways to get this done depending on your goals. If you want a really durable finish use ceracote or duracoat. These are more expensive and more work to put on and may require you to completely break down and strip the gun. I didn’t want to do that because I don’t care if this paint wears through with use. In fact that character is part of the look I’m going for. If I want to paint over it I can easily do that, keeping the fun going. I wanted to approach it like a operator who would shoot some paint on their gun prior to a mission to match the terrain. Their guns always look the best to me. Messy and battle worn but all business.
      So basically clean with alcohol to remove hand oil. Use a plastic paint. There are special paints for plastic that works way better. Plastic is hard for most spray paint to grip to so it’s important to use this kind. Don’t forget to mask off your sights! Use a light layering technique to avoid pooling and gumming up the works. Also looks more natural. Once you get the look you like put it in the sun or a warm oven to cure and the put a light coat of flat clear over the top. This helps it stay cleaner and more durable as well as giving a nice texture for grip. But mostly have fun. You will learn a lot and want to do it again.

      As long as you set up in warm weather you will be fine, most paints in walmart will stick to any surface, the key is to clean with alcohol and use 3m adhesive promoter to help with the paint before spraying.
