“I like beautiful melodies telling me terrible things.” -Tom Waits

There is no disgrace in crying to a Tom Waits song. It makes you human.

Absolutely! For their own health, men need to stop being “tough guys” and allow themselves to be vulnerable and ask for help. There are plenty of places you can safely let it all out.

This song is about a real person, Georgia Lee Moses. Google "The Sad Story of Tom Waits' Georgia Lee". Really heartbreaking.

Tom sings like a man who has seen a lot of life. His ability to paint with his unpredictable lyrics while accompanied by his subtly wonderful melodies are beyond compare

I admit, I am crying every time I listen to this song. Every. Time.

A lot of his music is melancholy like this but he also has loads of straight up Blues music, industrial music, jazzy up tempo music...even bluegrass/country influenced music. His discography has touched upon nearly every genre I can think of

I'm so glad you heard this song - and I mean truly HEARD it. You know what I mean. Peace and love from England.✌ P.S. Waits is my musical hero.

It's either moody, like this, jazzy, or some funny mix of Eastern European folk songs and found objects. When he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame he said something like, I'd like to thank you for giving me this award for having the most fun you can have with air. Truly an original.

I’m from the town where this happened. Such a sad and tragic story. Tom is a great man and song writer.

Sadly, From what I understand is that this is a song about a real event. Georgia was a young black woman in California who was raped and killed. So sad!

This and a couple other Waits songs can induce floods of tears and catch you unaware.
Few artists can express such powerfully strong emotions is such a raw and un-clichéd way.
The other 2 songs that do it are On The Nickel and and the incredible Kentucky Avenue, brings a lump to my throat every time.

This made me cry unashamedly. I couldn't help but think about the women who have turned to prostitution to feed their habits and how much of the world views them as trash. I've thought many times that God should be put on trial for the things he allows. Lookup what was discussed between rabbis in Auschwitz, not that this sort of thing is uniquely Jewish by any means.

Tom Waits has his own genre of music: Waitsian. That´s how legendary he is. :) Nice realt.

Tom waits has made a lot of music in a lot of different styles. He has lots of songs like this, but I think the second, much better half of his career is on average more energetic and experimental than this. You can’t really pigeonhole the guy, though. Sometimes he’s singing a sad ballad at a piano and sometimes he’s making heavy blues rock. He has a bluesy, more upbeat rock album called “Bone Machine” and the title (in addition to being innuendo) describes the sound of the album, as the songs are largely built around percussion-based sonic textures that sound very organic and spooky. He’s an interesting and imaginative figure, you could react to twenty songs and he’d still be showing you something new.

The story that I heard was that at this time there was a lot of media attention to a white girl who had been kidnapped and very little attention to this black girl named Georgia Lee who was raped and killed. Tom Waits is a great guy and this is a great song

Like I said on the last video, Glastonbury Festival is huge to me, and when people talk about what legendary artist needs to play there, I always say...
Tom Waits for Glastonbury. And so do I.
Fun fact, Heath Ledger took Waits' legendarily strange personality in interviews as part of the basis for his portrayal of Joker in the Batman trilogy.

Love it... some people are saying step right up, which is a great song... but i would also suggest - make it rain from letterman... one of the best live performances ive ever seen... love this one though... thx

Tom Waits actually wrote this song based on a funeral he went to for a girl who had this happen. I think the quotes from the mother were actual quotes from the Eulogy. It moved him to make this song.

Please react to anything from him, but I especially like Blue Valentine, Martha, A Christmas Card From a Hooker in Minneapolis, Alice, Heart Attack and Vine, I Hope That You Don’t Fall in Love With Me...he is a gold mine of amazing music. Gotta Be one of the greatest singer/songwriters of all time. Just not quite mainstream enough for people to know a lot of his music

Tom's voice got very raspy after his first couple albums. He is a great songwriter and had one of the sexiest girlfriends on earth once upon a time. Her name is Rickie Lee Jones who won a grammy in 1980 for best new artist. If you want to sample her music, I suggest Last Chance Texaco.
