Tom Waits Rules. Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis. But not the live version, some lady in the audience takes away from the mood of the song.

His first two albums are more conventionally sung, although still great. It took him a couple of.albums, a couple hundred gallons of bourbon, a couple hundred cartons of cigarettes, and few hundred.sleepless nights at the barroom piano to get that voice. That's his balladeer voice.

Waits' "Step Right Up" is one of my favorite songs in the world. A brilliant commentary on advertising and small time con-men.

Just want to say that I'm so impressed not just with the quality of your reactions, but the amazing variety of artists and genres you choose to react to. You're all over the place, but in the best way possible (whoever's suggesting tunes - my hat's off to you). Most of the time, I'm watching, it's because I can't wait to see how you react to tunes I've heard hundreds of times, but a bunch of times, you're the one introducing me to music I've never heard! I'm familiar with Tom Waits (who could ever forget that voice?), but haven't heard of lot of his stuff - really enjoyed this one, and I'm always looking forward to the next one!

This song was my introduction to Tom Waits. I heard it on the radio way back in the day on the Dr. Demento show. And the next day I immediately sought out Tom's music. He stands to this day in my Top 5 lyricists of all time.

Critic Damiel Durchholz says Waits' voice sounds "like it was soaked in a vat of bourbon, left hanging in the smokehouse for a few months, and then taken outside and run over with a car."

I''m not very good about subscribing when I like a video, but I've seen a few of yours and I just subscribed. I needed some Tom Waits right about now. I've been drinking and playing the electric guitar. I don't know how to play the piano unfortunately. I'm going to listen to 'Nighthawks at The Diner' and 'Mule Variations'. Both great albums you should hear. "Eggs and sausage. A side of toast. Hashbrowns over easy. Jelly and a roll...with burgers and fries now what kind of pies? Eggs and sausage...." I first heard that almost 30 years ago when I was a different person in a different place. Peace.: )

As with Dylan, you may be able to exhaust the great Waits tracks (subjective, of course) by the end of the year - I debate myself on who's "greater", Dylan v. Waits. Currently, Waits wins out, more variety, musically, vocally, and subject matter. Almost no one is doing Waits, so please delve deeper, you will be surprised and intrigued, the deeper you go...he's typically an acquired taste. So tasty.

I clicked on here because you don't see many people reacting to Tom's songs, then I went and scrolled through your reactions videos and Man! Most other reactors seem to all do the same songs that they've seen all the other reactors are doing, but you've got stuff that NOBODY's been doing videos on. Kudos for that!

It’s at the end of the song where he says ‘not me’ that it clicks he is drunk as hell. Very clever and one of my many favourites of his. By the way he has 50 years of albums. Hundreds of songs that are worthy of discovering.

D.s. got a point, teez. If we're looking at classic waits, Christmas card is the one. I wasn't super close to my family in my 20s after I left home, so most my Christmas's were that song, bourbon and Chinese food. It's poignant, and hilarious.

It’s also how he tosses an “off” but “on” chord in there. Add the his voice the words to an actually Drunk sounding Piano and you have an amazing Song written and performed by one of our Greatest story tellers
He paints a Picture and tells a Story like nobody else

When Tom Waits "first came out", his voice doesn't have the distinctive guttural, raspy wonderfulness it does today. Just listen to anything on his first album "Closing Time", such as "Lonely":

Here's a short clip of Tom Waits that starts off with Tom talking about his voice:
