There are 2 types of m.2 slots are running in market. One m.2 sata and m.2 pcie. If your motherboard has m.2 pcie slot then it support both m.2 sata and m.2 pcie nvme ssd. Bcoz its a higher version which support lower version also. But if u have only m.2 sata slot then u cannot use nvme. Also m.2 sata ssd is not recomended for most of the pc becoz both normal ssd and m.2 ssd have same speed which is less then pcie nvme ssd but m.2 ssd is expensive than normal sata. Therefore make sure before buy any nvme ssd wether it compatible with your motherboard.

Have you ever opened a ssd, it's actually pretty small inside only like some cached ssds take some space still it's pretty small, I'd guess that extra size for the casing is for better heat management.
