- Filmed by Marc Burton from Paul Somervilles Apartment
Filmed using a BlackBerry phone from a penthouse in Newcastle as my friend filmed the opposite direction with an iPhone. Cars can barely pass through the flooded underpass. The clip has been played on Sky News, BBC News and ITV News.

Ahh it's 2017 and still, the memories of this day are crystal clear, First and only time I've ever seen purple and blood red lightning
Thats what happens to mackems who try to sneak into the toon!
thanks for the heads up
I love the fact that everyone causes a huge thing over the tyne bridge being hit by lightning. The Stadium of Light could have burned to the ground, and not a single geordie would have cared
Similar weather in Carlisle earlier but now we have blue sky & sunshine!
Thats awsome to have caught that on vid mate
Well captured! Looks amazing!
Watched this on the news! so cool!
This brings me back
"I've got that on video!"
am i the only person in this city who thought the whole thing was kinda beautiful? obviously i understand if you were stranded somewhere but from a safe shelter it was amazing
Brilliant video!
No I agree, I was out in it and it was really spectacular!
Incredible!! Love a good storm!!
What timing , good shot x
epic video mate, brilliantly lucky to capture this. Nice one!
Wow 10 years ago today since Thunder Thursday - not seen a storm like this since :) - this video is iconic
Fantastic
well captured..
I just saw this on BBC news 24.
Infact it's on again as I type.
Well done :)
Well done mate, your video has just made TV News
Splendid.
this has just been on TV man your views will probably go up abit now, good capture btw
Awesome!
So bloody true! I can't remember it ever being so bad but I bet most of us will be back at work or whatever as usual. Don't know exactly where that lightning struck but I swear I felt it!!!!! I was at work at the time (near centre for life) I had just got in when the heavens opened. Never been so lucky in my life
You posted this video as quick as lightening!!
Great shot! Nicely caught! A crazy night indeed.
I saw this shown on Sky News saying "filmed by Paul Somervilles and Marc Burton"
I was watching from the other side of the river, in that building you can see. It was soooo loud.
the still shot has been used on all kinds of local and national newspapers, wow
that was awesome!
I've just jogged home through that. Glad I live on the hill up West End, town was horrendous
We haven't had a strike up here like that since Shearers days!
Great stuff, got to love mother nature!
just seen this on North East Tonight on ITV 1 :)!
WOW!
It struck my house today! It shook and it sounded like a thousand fireworks going off in my back garden!
Was on the national news on BBC News 24 on the daily re-cap too.
This is on the news now o.o wow
Awesome
Coolest day of my life... The flash flood and that, so cool being out in it and watching it!
First time Newcastle have had a decent striker.
Do NOT give permission to anyone else to use unless they pay you a fee...this is a great capture! Stuff the numbers - get paid for what nobody else got!
The Lighting Hit Off Me Bin! in The Street xx
Holy moly!
This is so going viral!
The car is the safest place to be in when lightning strikes :)
he was happy cos he got it on the news
Jesus!!! Well caught. We keep catching the wrong way...lol
2012 was a crazy year
YES!
I'm not complaining this storm gave me a free pool in my back garden. :D
I was on my way home from bth Form when it started up in Blyth. Freakin' bolt of lightning hit the ground a few metres in front of my bus. I nearly had a heart attack! I haven't seen fork lightning like this in our neck of the woods!
Hmm, one video goes up from Newcastle, floods of messages. It was only a small light show, the real fun is how they're going to deal with the flooding down by Walkergate and other such places XD Glad I am in Byker :D
It's Newcastle, the hydrolic bridge down at the bottom right is a Newcastle landmark.
Yup, this seems to be getting a lot of attention. Great shot, well done. It was bad here too (Newbiggin), although i was using my crappy iPhone to record it! :(
EPIC
That's right as heck, people pause at 0:07 ,amazing.
What the very?! This is Newcastle, it is real and I was on the bridge at the time of this. There was also around 13 other lightning strikes prior and previous to this.
BBC contacted me asking to use the video, which I agreed with as it has helped send it viral, however certain companies havent
AWESOME SHOT and from a Geordie in Australia FOOOKING AWESOME ACCENT :)
Its in England mate, you can see the swing bridge down by the side of the tyne bridge
I saw this on Wimbledon last night :D
Just been on the news!
BBC have just used this clip during their Wimbledon coverage in a montage surrounding Rafa Nadal's spectacular crash out of the tournament yesterday, thought you'd like to know!
good timing
I live here and the weird thing was you could hear the thunder first then the sky turned a strange green colour then came the lightning and torrential rain and winds. It was a bit like War of the Worlds. About 10 inches of rain in just over an hour.
If this was London it'd be viral by now.
just seen it on bbc news
It was like something from independence day, the sky was a light green just before it hit.
m8 this is class u's watching everybody in danger from the apartment lol
I hope ITV gives you some money for that shot
3 Years ago today since those famous storms :)
unreal that night like.
Just a bit jealous that those fucking southern fairies didn't get proper Geordie lightning like that
It's not fake, the exact same thing has just happened right next to my house, I don't think I can remember the last time Newcastle had such bad weather
Wasn't this played during the Wimbledon match tonight too?
The guy filming this is on the Newcastle side filming the Gateshead end of the bridge the lightning hits near the gateshead HIlton Hotel...anyone else see the van move from that area after the lightnin hit?
I don't understand how a video with 625 likes and 6 dislikes has only 302 views on the counter :s Great capture btw :-)
Not to mention the extreme floods.
Not as frightening as the traffic jams caused by the rain, some people still haven't got home from work yet!
lightning struck across the road from me, didn't get it on film though! was bloody loud that storm like
My god that was insane! Glad someone "gorritonvideo" ;)
Pretty epic
Wow
No mate, it's defiantly Newcastle, you can tell by the bridges and the fact the bloke can use a camera.
I was cycling at the far end of this when this happened. Deafening would be mild term to describe the noise!
It's only a little bit of lightning!
holy shit bro !!!
It was a real bad storm here in Geordieland and flooding everywhere, trust me that lighting strike was the real thing⚡⚡⚡⚡
im so glad i wasnt at work when this storm hit. would have been drenched as i ride my bike to and from work
this is god saying "demba, dont you think about leaving"
I was there! :o It was terrifying!!
I got also lighting videos on my channel. But i wanna have a shot like this.this is awesome.
it hit a lightning rod, placed there to protect the bridge from lightning strikes, it will (as you see) send the bolt down to the ground...
YESSSSS!!!!
KABOSH!!!
Shit the bed - that hit the ground harder than Lee Cattermole after a Tiote tackle.
We can only hope Mr Cattermole was travelling across wor beloved bridge, back to The Village of the Damned, when that lightening bolt struck....
Cool
I am stuck at work cos of this
"Yyyyyess! I go-at on v-e-yo!"
Err, it isn't mate. I live in Blyth, a nearby coastal town. This storm has been going on for over two and a half hours mate. the roads are flooded, buses and trains are cancelled, people are stranded and some folks are losing power. Not a computer edit at all.
