- I have seen storms like this before, but never in this country. I filmed the awesome storm that hit Newcastle on 28th June 2012. Was just amazed at the sheer volume of water and flash flooding. All these shops were flooded and trains and buses to a standstill.
Edit. The time of this storm was approx.4.15pm. It became so dark that the streetlights came on.

I remember this well, i was in the middle of my chemo and radiotherpy,and learning to walk again because of spinal surgery.I took me 20 mins to walk 10ft to the window, to watch this Supercell with my family.I have never witnessed anything like it EVER! Rock on THUNDER THURSDAY
Well I hope you're recovering well and yes it sure was a one in a million storm, never seen the likes of it here in England. Seen plenty like them in Australia but this sure was phenomenal. Rock on THUNDER THURSDAY indeed.
I LOVED that storm. I'd never seen a supercell before that day. It was hot and humid for over a week before it happened and when the weather cleared it, boy did it do it in style!
Geordie Prepper Yep it sure did. I wasn't prepared for the intensity of it as I was at work when it hit. It was work colleagues who dragged me out to see the *green* clouds and that was when I realised it was gonna be a beauty. I just wish I'd had a better vantage point to witness it. Nevertheless I caught some great lightning and the clap at 0:27 is fantastic. :D Thanks for watching and for your comment. :D

I'm in the Midlands. The storm system reached our area at about 9.30 am on this day. I got sent home from work because one of our offices got flooded.
The trees were horizontal because of the winds and the road outside of my office became a river. We had thunderclaps like the one in this video and the windows in the office physically wobbled in their frames...
It was so EXCITING!
I was in London when it happened and honestly I was beyond gutted. I wanted to be back in too see it and experience it. Once in a lifetime experience for sure

AndehX I know. I had something similar in Cannock a few hours earlier that day (I thought a bomb had gone off on or near Brunswick Road (where I was at the time) because the crack of thunder I heard was explosive).
Was a beauty to be sure. :D

i was driving along the A19 near cramlington when this storm hit the road was a foot underwater and we thought we where going to get swamped
This is Kingston Park shopping centre here in Newcastle & the whole of the city went black & was flooded within minutes too.
This was the most incredible storm i've ever seen, the sky went a sickly green seconds before the 1st lightning strike.
I've never seen anything like this before!
I remember this storm. I was only eight and I was terrified.
i've witnessed a couple of these intensity on the south coast, usually in late summer
Was absolutely brilliant. Our weather is changing so much it's scary lol
The worst summer I can ever remember, although it had strong competition from 1985 and 2008. It was more or less endless rain, low temperatures and then a brief hot spell for the London Olympics. The autumn kicked in really quickly as well and there was no Indian summer.
2012? I was wondering where it was at first but I now remember. Its opposite boots. I would of been 4 then. So I would of lived somewhere else but im shocked at this weather. Why cant it do this again!!!

What a bang of thunder! Amazing storm
A supercell thunderstorm and they mainly get them in the USA & Australia.
That green colour is eerie isn't it? I saw that in a storm in Suffolk in 1987, I knew we were for it and sure enough the storm produced hailstones as big as golf balls. We missed the great one of 28.06,12 down here, it was hot and sunny all day, but we got a big one on 14.07.12 the day my grand-daughter was born. My grand-daughter's name? SUMMER!
I'll never forget that day, the sight and sound when it struck the metro lines. The power of that storm was incredible, just thinking about it makes me want to see more super cell storms.
Yeah it sure was a big event was that one. I don't think I'll be forgetting it in a hurry Tony.

If we get some more nice weather we may see another one but I doubt any can beat this one. And thank you for the kind comment. There is a second part to this one but I've not bothered to upload it, it was a continuation from here as the storm was passing. Mostly rain and a bit more thunder. The *hit* at 0:27 was incredible. Glad I managed to catch it. :D
+1justpara I was at tesco that day an hour before it turned black. Shame there aren't many videos of it but your video shows the power and yeah that hit was so close

Ahhhhh, well this was filmed from across the road as you can tell. Although it was only about 4 in the afternoon, July, it went so black that the streetlights came on and you can't even see Tesco in this film where normally you can clearly see it. I take it you got home before it hit? I was fortunate enough to make it home on the bus (although it took me well over an hour to go a 10 minute journey) and then all hell broke loose with all the flooding. Some poor folk took them over 8 hours to get home. :( Amazing storm :D I love em.

We got the Mini tornado golf ball size hail and flooding as well as Loud thunder and Loads of spectacular lightning the whole works and you don't need to go to the USA to see it
Awesome storm, video doesn't do it justice until you realise that the biggest supermarket in the UK is about 100ms over the car park - and you can't see a bit of it...
Can't believe it's a year already. And the one time I decide not to go shopping at Kingston Park-this happens lol. Saying that I live in cowgate and we were absolutely slammed by it. Was absolutely incredible.

This is quite a good video. I missed this though as I used to live in Newcastle with me mam and dad but I had to move to Carlisle because my dad died.

Omg Kingston Park!
Yes it was all rebuilt several years ago. Tescos is now a giant superstore across the main road from where I'm standing in the video. Marks and Spencer has just moved in on this side of the park and the old Netto has gone and been replaced by Boots, Carphone Warehouse, Next and Brantano Shoes.

Aye saw the chaos on the news. Once I saw that sky go green and the heat hit before the first rumble you just knew it was going to be bad. Was very eerie. Everything just went totally still and quiet then bang. The sky just let rip. I'm a bit of a storm freak and watch outside when I can, but before it struck I could just tell it was going to be far too dangerous. Can't imagine the hell people went through though who got flooded.
@nylonTS Lol, yeah, fortunately the month's rain didn't come, but we've got dull, myserable, wet weather and is gonna last till at least 16th July. What a bummer year we've had.

Because there was very humid air coming up from the south and much colder air coming from the west over riding the humid air and lead to this.
I remember this I had an after school club at the time and I had to get a bus home (was meant to walk) and the bus was flooded just about 😕
I was at Tenerife when this happens lucky me ☺️

Yeah, I found it, brilliant. You caught that massive thunder clap too but it was more instantanious than where I was and a bit louder too so it must have hit more in your area than mine. Amazing storm.

Hi illmitchjax, you are correct. Tesco Xtra is one huuuuuuuuuuuge supermarket and it was just so dark not a bit of it can be seen. I should post another vid showing what it looks like when it's *normal* .

Sorry to hear you got flooded Jerrijayne, A whole lot of chaos and devastation from this storm. I hope it wasn't too bad and I hope you have recovered. I know there are *still* some people waiting to get back to normal one year on.
Hard to believe this was nearly a decade ago, it was insane. I was 5 minutes from here (Kingston Park) at home, a house a few doors from ours was struck by lightning with the roof destroyed.
Was that house in Blakelaw by any chance?

I was in Tynemouth doing the end of term music show and everyone was bricking it.
I was so lucky that my house and my school ascaped the storm but when I got to school the next day I found out my best friend Lucy's house was flooded up to her waist, she had to live in a flat until her house was fixed!😟😯

Wow good storm! This is of moderate intensity for supercell standards. But strong for UK storm standards. Nevertheless I'd love for London to get this! The storms here are weak
Says the weather expert, 1990s old my beer. This average compared to that decade.
I intended leaving work an hour before this hit, then the clouds loomed, the rain started, I was so mesmerised by the size and colour of the supercell that I just had to stay and film it. I was extremely lucky to get home as quick as I did, (took me an hour instead of the usual 10 mins on a good day). If I'd left any later than I did it would have taken hours and hours. You should put your vid up. Let me know when and if you do.
Hi Bridge, yeah that was one heck of a day all over the country. We've had more flash floods since this one and one heck of a bad year all round for rain and storms really. I just hope next year we get the Indian summer we've not seen for years.

It was one enormous storm that's for sure. Have you looked at some of the other vids on youtube. There are some amazing ones with wheelie bins floating along roads and a great one of the city centre.

Just an update. One week on from this storm, today 5th July 2012, we are again on high flood alert where it is expected that a month's rain is going to be dumped on us over the next 24 hours. What's happening to our earth?
It was very scary Sarah. But it was also very exciting.

It was pretty phenominal, never seen such a storm in Britain like this before. I loved every minute of it but it was a bit scary.
The strike at 0:27 could very well have struck the building above you.

Daz The thunder would have been instant, which it wasn't. There was 1 second between the flash and the thunder, so we are talking meters/yards instead of feet.
Was incredibly close, the 'explosion' of the thunder shows how close that was
Oh it was certainly close. I almost dropped the camera it was so loud.

I can't not believe you said in this video how ''wonderful'' thunderstorm is. You don't realise how DANGEROUS thunderstorms can be. Yes that maybe wonderful, But I've hear too many story of people getting killed. Don't mess with mother nature cos it more powerful then we human think.
Hi mythbustermad. Thank you for your concern. Yes I am well aware how dangerous thunderstorms are but that doesn't mean I can't *love* them. I do love storms very much. As a Christian I treasure all of nature and respect it fully. :D We can't avoid storms but we can stay safe. I hope you enjoyed the video.

i was riding my bike and nearly got hit by a drain then lightning struck my road and left a huge dint in it

Wow, really? Well the thunder clap in this vid at 0:27 must surely have hit something and yet no-one in the area lost power. I was most surprised. It really was an amazing and surreal storm. Hope your house wasn't damaged. Oh and I don't think I would have been polite either if mine had got hit.
The sky was awesome wan't it? I noticed it getting darker and darker and thought oh oh I'm gonna get wet. I was about to leave work and then some of the guys shouted me out to see the sky, I just couldn't believe what I was seeing, There's no way I could have left that building and not filmed it. Was sooooo scary but sooo exciting too.
Big storm that day this video was taking in kingston park i was near the airport at my stables i watched it from the barn door... Although turned out to be the worst day of my life.. I seen my horse get hit by lightning

1justpara We most definitely do get tornadoes in the UK, although they are nothing like the ones they sometimes get in the US. There was one in Birmingham (where I'm from) in 2005 (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Birmingham_tornado_of_2005), and there was another one in London in 2006 (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006_London_tornado). Yes, a year ago and still almost like it was yesterday. It's a good job you stayed at home, I was like a drowned rat by the time I got home from work, some people spent the night in their cars because they couldn't get home.

It sure did go black Jerrijayne. And I *have* seen storms like this but they were tropical storms in Australia. Never, ever seen one like it here in England. And when a 92 year old lady says the same thing then we can know for sure it was a freak, but why?

You're such a daredevil to just stand out there like that and film when the lightning is that close. I myself do like storms as well and I like to watch them move in, but if the lightning gets that bad, I do the smart thing and head indoors. Seriously, it's not worth dying over. You should keep that in mind next time. I'm sorry if you take my comment the wrong way but I'm just saying.
Hi Cody, Thank you for your concern and no I didn't take your comment the wrong way. I was under cover during this storm and not standing in the open and I didn't feel in the least bit in danger. It was an awesome storm.
1justpara Yes, it did look awesome. I still liked your video though. If you think that was cool, you should see some of the storms we get here in the U.S. We probably get a lot more of them here during the spring and summer compared to over in UK.

Omg really lightning will only strike you if your on something tall if on normal ground there is a million to one chance that's not daredevil running through 40 mph flood waters to save a dog is be very ashamed that your scared of being struck
William Birdsall Actually no, the whole "lightning only hits the tallest object" saying is a myth. There's a small tree in my yard that was hit by lightning and it has a bunch of much taller trees surrounding it. The taller trees have never been hit. I've seen lightning hit the ground instead of the taller objects beside it many other times too. And I'm not scared of being struck. I love to watch storms and the lightning but I still take the safety precautions most professional weather people tell you to do. Also, learn to use punctuation and proper English.
As you look ahead of you, you *would* / *should* see Tesco Store in Kingstone Park. Well on a non stormy day you would. lol
I don't think anyone really knows TykeLad101. Some say it's just an optical illusion, some say it's hail, but one thing's for sure, if the sky goes sickly green, run for cover, it's going to be nasty.
