The sight of the Tyne Bridge always tells me I’m home. Before I see it I always know I’m close to home, but seeing it just lifts my spirit. The reverse is also true though, whenever I’m leaving home, seeing the Tyne Bridge disappear from view casts a dark shadow.
I did used to like it when it was in the red white and blue color scheme for the Queens Silver Jubilee… would have been nice to revisit that color scheme for her last Jubilee.

Love Newcastle, the Tyne Bridge is so photogenic I visit Newcastle regularly and take photos every time I go. If that bridge was in London it would have been painted years ago. Thanks for the tour and I love the Sunday market right by that magnificent structure.

Great film of one of my favourite places in the world. My grandfather Capt Richard Embleton, on horseback, led the opening procession across the bridge on its opening day. I have a photo of him doing this. As a child he told me a story of a golden rivet hidden in the bridge as a secret, has anyone else heard that story. I am so glad it is being refurbished. I know it is an awful lot of money but a few weeks ago we going across the bridge I could have cried at the state of it.

I love bridges. I was in Newcastle in October 2023 for a few days and walked back and forth across all of those bridges with the exception of the railway bridge - as I remember, there was not public access to cross that bridge. Great city Newcastle and great people and history. Can't wait to go back.

Growing up in Newcastle in the late 50's and early 60's I spent a lot of time being dragged round the Quayside area by my father, who was a history teacher at RGS.
But it wasn't all bad. Dad seemed to know Everybody, so not only did I get to visit the control cabin on the Swing Bridge - very memorable standing there while the bridge opened! - but we also went up in the lift from the quayside to the road level. It must have been the East tower on the North bank, and it was operated by an elderly lift man. There was a wooden wheel with a sticky-out handle which may have worked the mechanism, and possibly a slatted wooden bench along one side for folk to sit on. Long time ago, but quite a clear memory 60 years on.

Ha ha yes Eddie, as an Aussie living in Newcastle I got ribbed quite a few times about us copying their bridge. Unfortunately for them I had read the Newcastle City Council web page that pointed out that even though the Sydney Harbour Bridge finished after the Tyne Bridge, it actually started construction before. It just took far longer as it was so huge. To be honest I think I prefer the Tyne Bridge because it's a more walkable human scale. I also love how the Tyne Bridge goes through and over the buildings in the Quayside, I don't know why but it just looks so good.

I run a steel erecting company in Canada with my son's and our trade name is Tyneside Steel Erectors Ltd. The logo has the bridge above the name, the curve extending from the letter D. We are Prudhoe lads and the name seemed fitting. We erect buildings all over Western Canada and we are very proud of the logo.

      If that's true fella,
Then, you might enlighten us all, how it's costing 40 million to paint the bridge and how it's taking 4yrs to complete?
I expect part of that price is for re surfacing, due to the road closure down to 2 lanes.
Get the right company in and that bridge could be closed and resurfaced within a few days.
So, come on, once its been re tarmac'd.
What's it going to be down to 2 lanes for?
Carht it be painted without the need for road works?
Other bridges around the world have 24/7, all year round painting AND maintenance going on without lane closures and inconvenience to motorists.
I could re paint the whole bridge me sel in 4yrs, aswel as supplying the deluxe for half da price lol.
Must have been a few palms greased for that contract 😂

I was the same coming back from Lympstone in the late 90's, 8 hours on the train from Exeter, first you see the Angel, I didn't like it when they built it, but that train journey made me come to appreciate the Angel, and then into the city and crossing the bridge, me mother n stepfather would meet me at the station.

I’m sure the image of British Paints shown was actually on Stoddart Street in Shieldfield, Newcastle. My mother worked in their factory. Be interesting if anyone else spots that and can correct me? Now known as Stephenson House and is student accommodation. Check google street view? ✌🏻👍🏻🇬🇧

There is a film that was made at the time called The Construction of Sydney Harbour Bridge on TH-cam. It is worth a watch as it shows the method used to build it. The Tyne bridge would have been built using the same method.

      @TynesideLife  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

Will do pal. They were built by the same engineering company so the construction would have been very similar 👍🏻

Missed this one originally but loved it. One thing about the kittiwakes, is it true that the bridge is the farthest inland that they nest? and lastly, are you the poorer brother of Peter Gabriel? Only joking.

I can understand the wanting to put spikes up to stop suicide jumping. But that will spoil the bridge. The might try other places like high bridge. Or somewhere else. So no to spikes . It like have a nic day and watch someone come and spoil it ?? And it will not look good.. it should remain as built. That's my opinion. Good video. Top marks.

Gr8 facts aboot WOR bridge, I left Newcastle in 1992 @ 21 years old and I too experienced folk in Bristol, London, Liverpool who couldn't understand me and every single time I come back by train I love seeing THE bridge and it makes me smile! I will next experience this on Saturday enroute to WOR Cathedral on the hill for the match! Keep up the ace work Eddy😎

Thanks for video Eddy. I'd heard so much stuff re the Tyne bridge and the Sydney harbour bridge, much of it rubbish it's nice to get some facts. I've spent a lot of time in Sydney and their bridge is huge, but it's no more valuable to them than ours is to us. If that makes sense? 😂
