Theres a detached isolating quality to BoCs melody writing that makes it sound separate from most music. Nostalgic, but not in a surface level vapour wave way. Occasionally eerie and ominous, but still accessible.I dont think BoC would be as niche as they are if it weren't for their dedication to execution of concept, whether it be melody or sound design, they go out of their way to squeeze all the potential out of a tune. This leads to one either one falling into the camp of "you get it" or "you dont". Finding a BoC fan in real is like finding a unicorn.
I didn't click this video expecting something so deep. Equal parts so well edited and cinematic, but also personal and emotional. I wish my brain came up with such amazing journeys to go with albums. I always interpreted the title "Music Has the Right To Children" as being metaphorical and as making a statement on the legality of sampling and issues that can come from it, since BoC do so much of it.
The second half of happy cycling is one my favorite moments in music the fist half feels like everyrhing is normal but there something then feels off but than once the beat switch comes everything changes it feels like realizing all the beauty of life seeing all the colors and then the last half is like looking at it all back
Geogaddi is my personal favorite BOC Album, this seems like this took a lot of work, so do what you want with Geogaddi. Over The Horizon Radar is the best interlude BOC has made imo.
I was unsure about this, as this record is so very personal to me, but you have done a masterful job at articulating the ineffable and transcendent movement through the tracks on this masterpiece. I'm kind of blown away. It even brought tears to my eyes. At times it was tempting to suspect that this was written by Eoin and Sandison and narrated by someone else. Strangely, I walked down the aisle to my wedding on the beach to the song Olson (ha!) Dunno what that says about me. I love this, thank you

I liked the narratives you associated with the tunes. Got a lump in my throat a couple times. You captured the blissful, rapturous side of psychedelia really well, just like BOC does.
I have searching for someone to do a video of a BoC album ANY ALBUM. Boards Of Canada evokes so many memories and feelings. How it is in the country, while going someplace much darker. I write a lot (started on forums but I’m working on a book) and BoC always takes me back to experiencing them the very first time. It can change the way you write. So many soundscapes to choose from. BoC brings all a little bit closer! Consider me subbed!

I think you pretty much nailed the entire album. I am surprised you find no melancholy at all in ROYGBIV. It feels to me like so much joy now, but it also feels like so much wistful knowledge that the joy is fleeting. Like right now here in Chicago...mid-September...it is still 85 and sunny, we can still frolic on the beach...but in a week, maybe two, we'll be wearing our winter coats and the leaves will turn orange. Yeah, that's right.
i actually agree with you. I think the fact that I have such strong positive associations with ROYGBIV means that i can get distracted from the other emotions it makes me feel, but they are nevertheless there

I'm not sure why, but that metaphysical journey was deeply cathartic for me, and it took me through dreams of my own that I had forgotten. I like to think everyone goes through these freeform journeys while listening to their respective favorite albums, but few take the time and effort to translate that to words and media, and I appreciate that you did so.

This is an astonishing essay. Thanks very much! I'm 52 and sort of missed them somehow in the 90's. I came in at Geogaddi and have listened to them a bit or a lot most days ever since. No one has been like them before or since. I keep hoping that they've been busy raising teens and will start releasing stuff again soon. After all, they never tour and so could theoretically keep releasing music well in to their 70's. Ha! Maybe....
Growing up a child in Canada in the late 60s and 70s I vividly recall the (unintentional) warbly audio on NFB films/clips that aired on Cdn TV (when we only had a few channels). When I found BoC, the nostalgia was tangible, and I've been hooked on this group like few others. Amazing video, obviously took a lot of work.
although, I have to point out the duo is from Scotland. It has some universality, I think there was an utopian idea in English-speaking countries at the time, that public service films, in both classrooms and daytime TV, could shape and influence young people profoundly, even though they were made with limited budgets. The TH-cam video for "Everything is a Balloon" captures this perfectly, and I was a bit surprised the original film was American, not actually Canadian, and I didn't know the band was Scottish when I first saw it, I assumed they must actually be Canadian also. There's a kind of lost innocence when learning they're not, which matches their themes; it's all like it's someone else's nostalgia, not quite your own.
I've got a theory, I don't know if this makes sense to other fans. Think about early technology, the Radio in the 30s, 40s, 50s… the crackling sound, the reception being bad so you miss a word or a sentence so you have to imagine the missing words/sounds. Your brain has to participate with the technology, to fill in the missing information. Same when you watched old TV, the image was black and white, grainy and pixilated, when you looked at the people on the screen your brain had to complete the image to realize you are looking at a person. As the technology got better the image got clearer, more HD, more realistic, your brain is less engaged, as an audience we become more passive. literature is considered a higher art than movies, more transcendent, the reason is that when you read a book the words call on you to imagine them, they summon images from your own life and psyche. Your brain is active and participating in the art. When you watch a movie the images are given to you. The best movies are able to depict images that many people share, common themes and archetypes. The more the art is asking you to participate and bring your own images, the more transcendent it is. Reality tv can be entertaining, but it's trash, you are much less engaged, your brain doesn't participate as much, you become a passive viewer. Look at BoC's videos on TH-cam, most of them are created by fans, different fans, and still most of them depict similar themes and images - nature, childhood, nostalgia, sadness, fear, longing, past, old technology, grainy images, psychedelics… so many people get the same images, it's like BoC's music call on you to remember, they summon images from deep inside you, they ask you to be an active listener. They are like a magic mushroom. I did ayahuasca a few times and Geogaddi to me is like an ayahuasca ceremony. They take you deep into the darkest and scariest places inside you, but by the end they take you out on the other side. They discovered something in nature, they can play sounds in a way that unlocks something in the listener. They call on you to remember, to look at the pain, to hurt it, and to let go of it. They are transcendent.
Maybe this is only my experience with BoC and other people experience them differently, I don't know. I truly love them. (english is not my first language, I hope what I wrote is understandable)
Take a song like "Kid for today", part of the beat and rhythm sounds like an old picture slide projector. just that sound makes you imagine, it asks your brain and psyche what do you see in those old picture on the projector. what do you remember, what images of you childhood do you see.
The thing that always astounds me about Roygbiv is that bass line against those chords and melody, I always wonder which one did they write first? In isolation they don't seem like they would fit together and yet is it an absolutely magical combination.
dude i grew up listening to them since i was small because of my dad. i wasn't sure what to expect from this video, the beginning made me cry because it literally does transport me back to childhood. open the light describes my exact nostalgic feelings of watching the sun rise, or the moon follow me at night, too young to know exactly where we're going. also, listening to BOC on the trip home from roswell NM gave me extremely early existential terror feelings -- geogaddi in the middle of the nighttime desert
Sounds pretty sweet, when I was in Israel driving past the dead sea I put on Tomorrow's Harvest and felt like I was experiencing some post-apocalyptic desert world where humans had long been forgotten

Man this is dope, and I love the visuals you pair with your analysis, I feel like I'm stepping into your brain and perceiving the album the way you perceive it but in a much more visceral way than you just telling me.
The section about "open the light" made me want to cry...I feel very similarly and it makes me wish I could spend more time with my dad. He's still here, but it's not as easy to travel to see him and make plans anymore since we've both been getting older. Juxtaposing MHTRTH with the visuals of Koyaanisqatsi is really clever. Koyaanisqatsi is the most disturbing, wonderful, awe-inspiring, terrifying movie I've ever seen, and MHTRTC is among the most important album I've ever heard.
i adore how you use stuff from Koyaaniskatsi here, this album (although i havent listened to the whole thing myself yet) seems to make the perfect score for it. even though the film already has an astounding score, this album works just as well, if not even better. when i hear Roygvib i see the images from the film; the oddly repulsive sickening skylines and manmade mountainous skyscrapers and so on.
WOW this is an unbelievable video. Soo soooo vastly interesting, visually near perfect, and everything you describes, especially the story amongst the first few songs was insanely captivating. I recently got this album on vinyl after searching for some time, and had a strong psychedelic experience while listening. This album is truly something else, a masterclass of detail and emotion. "Fun" Fact: The text we hear on One Very Important Thought is actually stolen from a pornographic film (A Brief Affair, 1981). The version featured on Boc Maxima samples the original voice, with a distortion filter (presumably). Obviously, they later changed parts of it to fit into MHRTC, especially since the aforementioned film contains John Abercrombie's Timeless as background music, which they didn't clean up for Maxima. It's a very weird medium to sample from imo, but kind of aligns with the whole idm vibe, especially given that aphex twin also sampled porn on Come On You Slags. Anyways, great video! Your "analysis" for Open the Light was beautiful.

I fell in love with MHTRTC not after the first listen. Probably this group is not as strange as it seems to me. It is something unearthly. I can't express what I feel when I listen to it. Several times when I listened to tracks from Geogaddy at night I became so scared that I had to wake up someone in the house)
The talking backwards at the end of Happy Cycling is apparently Jeff Lynn from Electric Light Orchestra talking about how people think he uses back masking in his music, but he doesn't. It's one of the many details that make this album so so good. Congrats again on an amazing piece of work man!
Man this love letter and guide to the album was amazing. I was caught off guard when you got personal on Open the Light but I think most boc albums/tracks make a personal connection to each of us. Because we feel this way it speaks to the artistic merit on the music. Fantastic listen and I'd love to see other videos like this.

They are like a magic mushroom. I did ayahuasca a few times and Geogaddi to me is like an ayahuasca ceremony. They take you deep into the darkest and scariest places inside you, but by the end they take you out on the other side. They discovered something in nature, they can play sounds in a way that unlocks something in the listener. They call on you to remember, to look at the pain, to hurt it, and to let go of it. They are transcendent.
Maybe this is only my experience with BoC and other people experience them differently, I don't know. I truly love them.

Take a song like "Kid for today", part of the beat and rhythm sounds like an old picture slide projector. just that sound makes you imagine, it asks your brain and psyche what do you see in those old picture on the projector. what do you remember, what images of you childhood do you see.

The thing that always astounds me about Roygbiv is that bass line against those chords and melody, I always wonder which one did they write first? In isolation they don't seem like they would fit together and yet is it an absolutely magical combination.

dude i grew up listening to them since i was small because of my dad. i wasn't sure what to expect from this video, the beginning made me cry because it literally does transport me back to childhood. open the light describes my exact nostalgic feelings of watching the sun rise, or the moon follow me at night, too young to know exactly where we're going.
also, listening to BOC on the trip home from roswell NM gave me extremely early existential terror feelings -- geogaddi in the middle of the nighttime desert
Sounds pretty sweet, when I was in Israel driving past the dead sea I put on Tomorrow's Harvest and felt like I was experiencing some post-apocalyptic desert world where humans had long been forgotten

this such an amazing take on this wonderful masterpeace of an album. i always been in love with this album, this thought of a memory of some pass that maybe you never lived, thats what this album to me is all about, those memories of your childhood you lost that you wish you can relived or maybe not. That filling of anxiety when you think of the future when you watch the sunset, i love this album and i always will. Awsome video you put more then one smile on my face.

Ahhhh yes the feeling of nostalgia for a place I’ve never been looking at a colour that doesn’t exist with a feeling I have yet to feel.
The section about "open the light" made me want to cry...I feel very similarly and it makes me wish I could spend more time with my dad. He's still here, but it's not as easy to travel to see him and make plans anymore since we've both been getting older. I would love nothing more than to spend some time fishing with him and starting a fire under the night sky with him right now

Juxtaposing MHTRTH with the visuals of Koyaanisqatsi is really clever. Koyaanisqatsi is the most disturbing, wonderful, awe-inspiring, terrifying movie I've ever seen, and MHTRTC is among the most important album I've ever heard.
i adore how you use stuff from Koyaaniskatsi here, this album (although i havent listened to the whole thing myself yet) seems to make the perfect score for it.
even though the film already has an astounding score, this album works just as well, if not even better. when i hear Roygvib i see the images from the film; the oddly repulsive sickening skylines and manmade mountainous skyscrapers and so on.
this video is absolutely INSANE!!!!! i admire the dedication and imagination this must have took. you deserve your own short movie/novel

This is so good! Definitely can appreciate the work gone on, and also the sheer quality of the editing, storytelling and audio (really good mic, whatever you're using!). I'm not even sure I could articulate what weird stuff goes on in my head when I listen to BoC tracks from this album... so the fact that you can = bravo!

"Fun" Fact: The text we hear on One Very Important Thought is actually stolen from a pornographic film (A Brief Affair, 1981). The version featured on Boc Maxima samples the original voice, with a distortion filter (presumably). Obviously, they later changed parts of it to fit into MHRTC, especially since the aforementioned film contains John Abercrombie's Timeless as background music, which they didn't clean up for Maxima. It's a very weird medium to sample from imo, but kind of aligns with the whole idm vibe, especially given that aphex twin also sampled porn on Come On You Slags. Anyways, great video! Your "analysis" for Open the Light was beautiful.

The talking backwards at the end of Happy Cycling is apparently Jeff Lynn from Electric Light Orchestra talking about how people think he uses back masking in his music, but he doesn't. It's one of the many details that make this album so so good. Congrats again on an amazing piece of work man!
Man this love letter and guide to the album was amazing. I was caught off guard when you got personal on Open the Light but I think most boc albums/tracks make a personal connection to each of us. Because we feel this way it speaks to the artistic merit on the music. Fantastic listen and I'd love to see other videos like this.
