    The friend who introduced me to Boards of Canada remarked "you know, if you need a conversation starter, I've found a surprising number of women our age know who Boards of Canada is..."
    He was right, but with the caveat that every woman I know who's heard of BoC intensely dislikes them. XD

    Yay!! This album has a very special place in my heart. I first heard the song "Aquarius" on the radio when I was in middle school and immediately fell in love with its strange, haunting, and nostalgic melody. I had it recorded on a cassette tape and just called it "the orange song" for years, haha. The song also became a hit with my parents and best childhood friend, who's a big BoC fan like me now. Roygbiv is a close second favorite. :) Anyways, thanks for your wonderful review! You described BoC's music perfectly. I can't wait for the next one!

  • @nikolademitri731

    You’re not understanding the last track is bc it doesn’t sound like you’re viewing it in the context of the time it was released. If you understand that messaging as a message meant (at least originally) for a specific time and place, it makes a lot of sense actually.
    There are at least 2 major reasons why folks, especially in the UK (BoC are a Scottish duo, bare in mind), would get why that “stand for your rights” and “fight censorship” messaging is there: rising neoliberalism in 90s Britain, and even more relevant, the government pushback against the race/electronic music culture in the UK. Granted, it had been four years since the UK government really came down hard on “the ravers” (to put it mildly, and maybe generalize a bit), but censorship was a growing issue at that time. Also, Blair’s labor government was no real relief to the neoliberal era that Thatcher had ushered in, and people were angry at a lot of government policy, especially the youth who were really involved in the electronic music world (the takeover in the UK and Europe was far more significant than the US), and the realization that the “left” party was now more a centrist party. Etc.
    One more thing that should be considered, is that MHARTC is an album that explores themes of nostalgia above all else, with the voices children throughout, and a mellow, ghostly, but sometimes very eerie and almost paranoid vibe. That nostalgia can be read/understood in many ways, but it is in part looking back over the past decade of this culture that had emerged with acid house in the late 80s, and the childlike innocence of what was a legitimate cultural movement for the guys in BoC, and presumably most of their listeners; an “innocence” that had been lost, a culture which had been under attack, both by the government with direct policy, and by the capitalist commodification of the scene. Etc.
    I could go on, but there’s some actual academic writing out there that’d better explain that time, twenty years ago now. Hopefully, though, that little ramble was enough to contextualize the messaging at the end of the album a bit more. It’s got to be read in it’s historical context, to be understood in context. ✌🏼

    The revolution some have expressed they felt upon hearing The Beatles, Elvis, Hendrix or Motown for the first time, I feel for this Album and all of the albums it turned me onto as a result. While so much of music stagnated under traditional instrumentation, the IDM/EDM movement was and is uncovering new ground, BoC specifically in the psychoactive realm. Arguably this revolution started a good 30 years earlier but this is the innovative music of my time, my generation.

    I think you're really missing their sense of humor. But maybe it's just an acquired (or not) sense of taste. Their music made me laugh from the beginning.
    And apparently some men are under the impression people are under the impression women don't like BoC but I know quite a few who do. And they're attractive, if that matters , , , , The point is, this is a strange review. I get that album reviews should be personal, but it's rare that i come across reviews so stuffed with the first person without explaining why or how it matters that the first person is so important-. Glad you kind of like it, I guess--it's hard to tell, from the review, honestly, even though, it sounds like you listen to it frequently; I can't quite sqaure the two. I also kind of wish that y'all millennials and Gen X kids could find a thesaurus and get some synonyms for "creepy" when you talk about Boards because, damn, guys, there are lots of other and sometimes more precise words that work better--just sayin. While it's hardly original to compare BoC and their music to childhood, I do like that you tie them to the particular experience of going on a field trip and getting lost--that's nice and specific. But I kinda wonder about the rest; it's so general. Childhood alienation is there stock and trade, after all. And . . . "hype'? I mean, really? They've been around since the early 90s, so Boards have a *reputation*--and a well-earned one (and mystique, too)--the exact oppositie of hype.
    I do appreciate that young people are getting into, and reviewing Boards, on TH-cam and such, but speicficity helps your viewers learn what they're in for, and hopefully helps you grow yoru subscriber base, no? Just some things to consider. Good luck! I'll check out your Geogaddi review laters.

    • @TheWonkyAngle
      @TheWonkyAngle  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      imo Warp Records's entire Artificial Intelligence series follows basically all the same formulas as Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works 85-92, many of its participants eventually growing out of that phase and coming into their own such as Autechre, The Black Dog, Speedy J, Richie Hawtin (aka Plastikman/F.U.S.E), heck even BoC has Twoism which isn't that far removed from that sound either. I mean basically the IDM genre as a whole borrows off of formulas that Aphex started so you know
      and of course there's also B12, who started out as Aphex ripoffs and continue to be Aphex ripoffs to this day

      The Wonky Angle I'm mystified by your text. It seems in no way related to what I said.

      and I'm mystified by your original comment as I really like BoC and rated this album a 9/10
      I mean I don't love every single facet of their being or consider them a personal all-time favorite band but I don't see how that counts as hatred

    not great - there's like 125 million Soundcloud tracks out there - sorta downtempo instrumental hip hop/easy listening with a few samples thrown over the top is a considerable ingredient in the sandwich. The hype they received was really unwarranted, like the Primal Scream record. Simple, two bar keyboard riffs, dull, simple bass samples (that repeat, and repeat, and repeat) and occasionally clever mixing tricks with the "content". Some would argue there's no content to their music - the lack of development, contrast etc . . . what kicks me in the head is the track Aquarius - clearly a key change but they don't actually move the pitch for the main instrument sample with the key change, another amateurism along with all the one-finger-at-a-time keyboard parts. It's wallpaper music for college stations. It's not super trebly like club music - some of it actually just sounds like 90's hiphop with an element of 'aloofness' that you'd associate with sleepy trip hop, another way college radio filled out it's automatic playlists while volunteer djs were at home sleeping . . . oh yeah, FIGHT CENSORSHIP on behalf of easy listening tracks that sound like Double's godawful mid 80's soft rock single "Captain of Her Heart" with the vocal track on mute . . .
