What's the point in highlighting a story from twenty years ago about drugs and commenting on the substance abuse situation on the island. You are a guest have some manners, your comments are not helpful and may actually serve to attract the wrong type of people to the Azores.
I do think that it’s important to read about/know/ understand matters/issues, so they can be avoided in the future. If we take, for example, global issues or international development, it’s important to get educated and know (more or less) what is going on in the world. In general, the more people talk about an issue, the higher the chance that an action will be taken. So for this, I do not agree with you and I do not think that talking about it might “attract the wrong type of people to the Azores”. Thanks for sharing your opinion and wishing you a great day!

Hello Ryan, I'm planning to visit Sao Miguel this summer and it would be perfect if you could recommend some of the hidden gems on the island. I would really appreciate it and be grateful! Thank you, mate!
Sooo Azoreans are still doing that cocaine after 20 years??? Seems to me they don't like it very much, so why would it be a problem?? What a strange story to tell instead of showing the beauty surrounding the village! And all that in 7,5 min???
Locals rarely do drugs in the Azores. It's more of the tourists. Locals got better things to do with their time, like cooking, cleaning, dancing, farming, planting and spending time with friends and family.
"Locals rarely do drugs in the Azores" in the past maybe, but drug use is actually getting higher. It all started in the early 00s with a Cocaine ship from a Italian drug trafficar that went to the north coast of the Island of São Miguel, alot of people used drugs without knowing what drugs were, its a comical and sad situation at the same time. Alot of people obviously got addicted, there are some stories even of using cocaine to make the lines of football fields. Things stabilized, but the damaged was done. Early 2010s young people started to use "Synthetic" drugs and now its actually a huge problem, specially in the biggest island. Crime has raisen like never before. Sure, crime in the Azores is "Nothing" compared to big European cities, but still, for the local peaceful way of Life in the Azores, rocked alot of people world. There is even some talks of creating some regional laws to fight synthetic drug use that is becoming a problem, combine that with a uneployment of youth and you have a terrible combination. Its actually a huge "shock" for older people seeing how things changed in that part of their society.
From where in Spain or Portugal could we fly to the Azores Island. This Island is on our bucket list as my husband's ancestors first originated from there as Arseneau family.
Usually, it is necessary to fly to Porto/Lisbon first, and then from there you take a flight to Ponta Delgada (if you are planning to visit Sao Miguel). Try to check flights with Ryanair, Tap Portugal or Sata!

Hi Floral Heart, fingers crossed for you, the Azores are beautiful! Regarding moving to the Azores, a few weeks ago I made a video on the “Worst things about the Azores” - some of the information might be helpful regarding moving here. Wishing you a great day! Noemi
you will always be welcome on our island because the best we know how to do is make you feel at home. don't get me wrong but there were so many interesting things to show and talk about and you decide to talk about something that you didn't even tell correctly you changed the places, I loved the part about the chains that was too much I broke my head laughing but whatever. I don't know who told you, but I'm sure he didn't even know it very well. PS- I loved ser you showing the village where I live and calling it another name.
I don't know the story, I know the reality, and the reality was that it was a difficult moment in our small society, many young people died because yes, there was a vessel carrying that drug and it was caught by the authorities and what it resulted in was what happens is normal in environments with consumption and traffic, social problems and poverty of spirit because lack of money is not because the state gives them subsidy and in many cases pays them home, light and water. now tell me the difference between being in são miguel or being on the other side of the world the results are always the same, the only Diference was we are a small society, probably in New York there are more junkies than all 260000 Azoreans and you don t have the same impact if you go talk about them.
Sanguinho was inhabited after several floods in the parish. With the passage of time without new floods the people returned to live in the parish again.
Well, the island WAS a hidden gem 😂. Too many people know about it now. Before you know it, it will be as densely populated with tourists as Hawaii. I suppose tourism will help the economy at the expense of losing natural beauty to the hand of capitalism.
@@catchnemo if they have any respect for the culture and natives, they will. Unfortunately, history proves that whenever there is a profit to be made, we prostitute the land at whatever it takes.
Alcoholism and drug issues have been there for hundreds of years. The area of Rabo de Peixe being a fishing and farming town is more prone prior to the incident having people who worked hard and played hard liked to use and abuse alcohol and drugs long before the cocaine washed up on shore! It did accelerate the addiction issues no doubt when the cocaine washed up. The area of Riberia Grande has some of the worst drug/drink related crime rates in Portugal according to a Police Officer at Rabo de Peixe just last month, and on the eye I can see the are quite a few issues on when I paid a visit to this area 3 times, including on the worst street but compared to some areas where I live its not that bad Any island is generally more prone to these issues (including the bigger ones like the UK and Ireland!), but with the Azores being that bit more remote makes it that little bit worst than Madeira for example. Interested to know your view on any poverty you saw on the smaller islands, and any drink/drug related issues?
Honestly, I think you're presenting this in a weird way ... I don't think it will bring any positive result, the way you almost try to make it like a headline story ... It's difficult to pinpoint exactly your intentions behind this video, but I feel like drugs are far from being a problem in the Azores from the other sources that I have read. You're stirring facts and hearsay's to make this sound like a huge problem needing to be addressed at an important scale and it certainly is not that way... I would reconsider keeping this video on TH-cam for the sake of the islands reputation, to respect the locals and the beautiful culture that they have.
Drug related crime in Portugal is highest in the Ribeira Grande area according to the Police in Rabe De Peixe in August 2024 - this is not hearsay, it's a fact. Have a drive around the town, see how high the walls are on the finer properties, look at the number of bars, and most of all look at the fear and suffering in the eyes of some of the people on the streets. Don't get me wrong, we have pockets of bad places where I live, but we are doing far more to combat it too from a lived experience perspective.
@Abi Brown "by the way the island is not exclusive to native portuguese but to other nationalities that made the azores their homes". As long as they remember they are guests in the Azores and learn some manners there won't be a problem. She clearly has bad manners running her mouth on social media about issues that should be discussed within the island and country, not to random people on the internet. It is none of their business. You do not discuss family problems with strangers. That is the problem with some of you folks that have moved in you haven't learned proper manners yet. Either learn them or move on.
