    Another method I found was from a 1950s Housekeeping magazine. You grab a large clothes basket and start in the entryway of your home, and gather anything that doesn't belong (including trash) into the basket. Then you move to the next room and repeat, but also take anything from the previous room(s) that belongs in your current room out of the basket and put it away. Once you get to the last room of your house, head back towards the entryway unloading anything that remains.

    The son’s jacket thing. Another question, after the first two questions. Here it is, “Is there somebody else in my community whose life will be made more bearable, even joyful, if they had this?” There are so many kids in the Northeast Kingdom in Vermont or in Rutland, for instance, who really, really need that jacket. Really, kids who have the most threadbare, beaten up, ill-fitting, totally inadequate winter jackets. Rather than hanging onto it just in case someone visits, think of that kid in NEK. It’s better off on his back than collecting dust in a closet. So many of us are so blessed. What if we all flip the script and say, “My son has already been blessed with this jacket. Who can I bless with this amazing, beautiful jacket, barely worn, that no longer fits my son. For whom would this jacket be a real, true luxury? What struggling Vermont mom will be SO excited to pick out this barely worn, high-end winter jacket for her much-loved son?” Can you imagine her, finding this gem at the local community clothes closet? 🎉🎉🎉! This jacket is destined to bless that kid, just like it blessed yours, every winter day (until he outgrows it).

    This lady makes so much sense to me. I can relate to what she says very easily. Thank you for saying, “I could beat myself up, or . . .” And, Mel, I also get frozen about getting rid of items I might need. I have used the one time that I gave away something that I later needed as the reason to not get rid of things. So silly that now I don’t even remember what it was.

    I realized around easter time, that my clutter my whole life has been a tool for me to isolate due to C-PTSD (because of childhood trauma). I have done some healing, and realized that I can not heal in isolation (learned that on TH-cam). I started decluttering in the storage room, continuing with closets and drawers around my home, full of trash and paper clutter, really. My logic is that I need a place to store things we need and use that I find along the way while decluttering. I got rid of my wardrobe closet because I need more floor space, found better storage for my clothes, got rid of the clothes I don’t love. Moved around furniture to make my space better. My space is still cluttered on the surface, but my storage room is very neat. I took a long break from decluttering and my home is still a mess. I need to start decluttering surface clutter and go out with the trash that have been bothering me for many days, like empty cardboard boxes, paper, etc. I have approximately 8 boxes left to go through, cluttering up my living room. I think the method of decluttering starting on surfaces will work for me now that I have room in drawers. I still feel the pull towards keeping the clutter, but I continue in order to create a better life for me and my kids. By the way, they are inspired too and have been hard core decluttering and tidying up their rooms. Our goal, stuff-wise, is to keep only the things we need and love and seasonal stuff. The last things we will sort out is sentimental things, I am thinking to keep a box or two but I havent decided yet.

    I agree, but I myself, love to know where everything is at and so, I need to have everything clean and organized. Clear the corners of your home so good vibes flow into your home, everyday. Someone once told me, IF you haven't looked at your clutter for over 30 days, it's not that important to keep. So you must start on one room at a time, then automatically, you will start organizing in every room, little by little. Just DO it, like the Nike commercial. Nobody is coming to help you declutter. That is something you have to do all on your own. And once you do do it, you'll feel great and accomplished; a great big load off of your shoulders and then you start taking care of yourself and making progress in all areas of your life.💯💓

    • @laurieclarkson9180
      @laurieclarkson9180 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      I heard this once and it helped me. Your anxiety is not from getting rid of things, it's from holding onto things. Pretend that every single object in your house has a voice and it's telling you to do something with it. The dishes are looking at you saying "Wash me!" and your laundry is saying "Fold me!" and your bills are yelling "Pay me!" and your dog is saying "Walk me!" and your closet is saying "Organize me! Donate me! I fell off my hanger! You haven't worn me since 1978!" etc... all of these voices create noise! Your home feels like chaos because everything is talking and making demands of you. Everytime you tackle something, it shuts up and the more you do, the quieter and more peaceful life gets. It's so true..and when I imagine my house this way, it really helps. Might work for you too!

    7:58 1)Start with Trash - easy to start. If you have to think about it ( is this trash ? ) skip it till next process.
    11:28 2)Return to its home. These are items that already have a place
    12:28 3)Duh Donate - box must donate too.
    16:12 here we look at 2 ?’s … 4) if i need this - Where would “I look First ?” eg fingernail clippers? TAKE IT THERE NOW. < grrrr… even if there are too many steps to get there. The Rational is that we/I will get distracted and I’m left with piles and boxes of interrupted incompletions >
    Trash vs donate ?/Mel A: These questions on value can derail a good clean up …. These are Value decisions < which are hard to make>. 27:48 Mel noticing the added drama that “we” suffer ( because of the Value questions. ) in our analytical mind. Her process bypasses the value questions.
    26:11 what to do when the “home for the item” is a mess - what in here am i willing to get rid of? To make space for the valued item.
    31:05 If I needed this item ?Would it ever occur to me that i already have one. ??
    38:37 after all the above … bringing things to the instinctual home - IF its OVER FLOWING -
    5) the Container theory of how much will fit in this container called / closet / room / house / garage.
    Serves as a limit - boundary. Putting the favorite things in the container first . ( this helps with value desicions … if the favorite things in first …. Then the Container makes the decision for me on what to keep .

    IMHO, I don't think Mel even needed to ask herself those questions about the stuff her son had already decluttered on his own. He's done the work. All she needed to do was take it to the donation center for him. She invalidates his choice to be rid of his own clutter by sifting through the bags he already sorted through and pulling things out she wanted to hang on to.

    Maybe I'm just daydreaming, but what if the problem becomes that there is not decluttering to do when I have the drive to work. It reminds me of the problem of knowing when to stop painting a painting. At that time pointless rearranging might occur. Could the intimidation of a blank canvas be experienced since decluttering is like removing paint from a painting? Just saying. It's a nice problem to have.
