[UNDERSTANDING MINIATURE WARGAME TERRAIN]- Easy Guide to Improve Your Tabletop Games | Team Yankee

  • Terrain is likely the most important aspect of miniature wargaming, but the huge variety of rules and variable interpretations of terminology associated with it can be intimidating to both beginners and advanced players alike. Elevated, area, impassible , linear, roads and buildings are all terms associated with terrain and tabletop scenery, but what do these terms really mean and how do the effect the game? In this video, I do a deep dive into the terms to dispel the the ambiguity and help make understanding terrain both a fast and easy process.
    The terrain I feature in the video is mostly from the Battlefield in Box Terrain Bundle range, by GF9/ Battlefront Miniatures. These incredible wargaming sets are now available in huge bundles that provide massive savings if you are looking to build your terrain collection. Most of the images and video is related to Team Yankee, Flames of War and other 15mm war games in general, be the content should be useful for all miniature wargamers not matter what your favourite system or scale is.

    I think the rolling for the rule makes a lot of sense, I will incorporate it in my Bolt Action plays #MLH

    For my gaming table, I get everyone to agree on terrain by asking 2 simple questions. What terrain would you like to see on my table and why? The benefits are that you quickly find out what your next terrain project will be. The group will talk about it and come to agree about what its effects will be on the game long before the new terrain is on the table. #MLH

      @MiniatureLandscapeHobbies Perhaps I'm showing my age now, but I played my first tabletop wargame back in the mid-70s. So, I have hopefully picked up a thing or too along the way.

    One of the more contentious pieces of terrain I've found is ruined buildings that come on their own base. Some players want to give the cover bonus only within the perimeter of the building itself, while others give the bonus if you're on the base. Interestingly enough, the former always want to inflict movement penalties (if any) on the whole base. I prefer to give infantry the cover bonus on the whole base (soldiers are going to find SOMETHING to make the safer), while vehicles need an intervening wall to claim cover. #MLH

    I think that terrain is the most critical aspect of a game. Forget the miniatures and consider the game for a moment. The principles you need to provide and understand are termed KOCOA ie key terrain, observation and fields of fire, cover and concealment obstacles and avenues of approach. If you just scatter terrain there is no real challenge nor if you use balanced forces either.
    Terrain and it’s use is this critical to replicate well, and to challenge play and tactical thinking. Complex terrain means you must consider many factors when you plan the operation. Hence, I think you need to provide more depth to this topic perhaps and why also studying realistic maps is so important.
    If you have a simple open table you have a simple game and whilst fow is very limited tactically, I have seen some excellent tables with real thought put into them, which have produced great games. Slapping down terrain does not work for me or many others and whilst. I get you are are selling a theme, I think in my humble opinion, it is far better you sell something right; especially if you want wargames rather than just throw down games of war.
