I think the thing about who becomes Santa is that it is their destiny to be Santa. It doesn't all happen by chance but rather fate picks someone who needs to be Santa. For example, in this case Santa was someone who needed to spend more time with their son. It also made Scott become a better man.
Yeah but then Scott essentially abandoned his son for 9 years because he focused too much on being Santa, and then Scott continued that mistake and neglected his wife whilst she was pregnant
Turns out the Disney+ series revealed this was kinda spot on. Scott Calvin was picked out to become santa and the "clauses" were just made up/contrived as tests to prove his worth.

Bernard admits most Santas don't last long as it's so hazardous, in fact many/most Santas don't survive their first year. Charlie tells him that if that's the case, he doesn't want his Dad to do it. This then leads into the scene with the new safety features. So basically the elves aren't sad about the last Santa because they barely knew him and are used to new Santas showing up each year. Being a cyborg from the future, he sees his kid is gonna become Darth Vader because his dad missed too many of his karate school practices, and that Turbo Man doll is the only thing preventing the rise of both Skynet and the Galactic Empire.
I actually have always loved this movie. Big Christmas tradition is to watch this and a couple others films during Christmas. This movie has a lot of magical moments. The whole North pole feels very warm and magical too. Thats what I love about it.

Nah, Denny’s was accurately depicted. Every American city and town has excellent diners you should visit, instead. It would be like going to Italy and visiting Olive Garden.

You won’t be surprised to know Tim Allen himself (off of this) wants to address these plot holes specifically - especially when the Elves hated old Santa.

The reason that the Elves don't care is because the Santa spirit (Klaus) takes over the host and the host becomes Santa which is the reason the Elves don't care because it's still their master's mind, body, and soul.

There are almost 2.5 billion Christians. Let's say 1.5 billion celebrate x-mas where there is gift-giving. Seems conservative, but let's stick with that. Let's be generous and say Santa can do each house in 3 minutes. That would mean it would take Santa over 8,500 years from his own perspective to deliver presents every year. Yikes, dude. EDIT: I’ve just learned, after checking my grammar guides, that in the UK, “attorney-generals” is preferred. But “attorneys general” is correct in the US.
With the third movie in mind. I always thought that the original Santa that Tim Allen replaced went back to the time he became Santa and lived out his life peacefully with his family.
