Tim Allen hit gold with Christmas thanks to The Santa Clause movies, and with Christmas With The Kranks in 2004, he attempted to strike gold again! That didn’t exactly work out. Starring Allen, Jamie Lee Curtis, Dan Aykroyd and more, Christmas With The Kranks follows Luther and Nora Krank as they decide to skip Christmas. The movie definitely raises a lot of questions.
Like why aren’t any of the characters likeable? Why does anyone even care if they go on a cruise or not? Why not put up the decorations if it’ll get everyone off their backs and cost them no money? What’s up with their daughter landing in Peru only to come directly home? What’s this movie’s message, anyway?
To answer all these questions and more, step inside the pitch meeting that led to Christmas With The Kranks!

When I first saw this movie, I didn’t realize how crazy the town is in forcing the family to conform and celebrate Christmas. Lol, strangers interfering this much about what another family does in their lives is creepy.

It's actually based on a novel with pretty much the same plot and the conclusion pretty much was "you benefitted a lot from the christmas spirit and you're a dick if you don't participate" even though in the beginning of the novel, it was very clearly described how he was antipathetic to the holidays and the whole hubbub was just tiring, and how little he had to show for the 6000 spent last year (which seems indeed completely insane?)
So yeah, it's a case of a somewhat ok adaptation of the spirit of the novel, it's just that the novel's drivel.

Writer: Kind of wish you didn't say that as it basically ruins the entire premise of my movie.
Producer: And why is it such a big deal that this family is taking a vacation during a time when people take vacations?
Writer: Because Christmas is the most important day of the year and everyone who doesn't participate in it must be ostracized.
