Oh Maiju. I felt this one with you. So sad to see that canker has struck. Could really hear your disappointment over them. What hope you can save the other tree and hope it doesn’t spread. Since starting my garden I’ve been truly stunned by how many pests and diseases there are in the garden. Really loved the footage of the bull finches. ❤️
One other thing, you must keep a clear strip of ground either side of your fruit trees as grass takes more nutrient from the trees than you think and also harbours disease. You have choice of spraying the grass of or use a rotavator.. Yes cool we only reached 101 this year and we have averaged about 92 for August so far.
@@spudsandroses Here have more time than I know what to do with just now as is far too hot and dry at this time of year to do anything even got a touch of sunstroke last week when watering all afternoon. Busy trying to harvest my large apple crop as not had much for past 2 years due to foxes eating them so had to do a baiting job on them this time and net the trees, so now more fruit than I can eat, just hope it keeps as well as it did when in the U.K.
That must have hit so hard, I felt a bit teary with you! I planted some apple cordons last autumn and I'd be gutted if I lost them after feeling such hope when planting. You've had some great successes though, so I hope that brings some comfort and the trees pull through. Hope next week brings you some smiles!
Thank you so much, really kind of you 🥰💚🌿 I'm very protective over the trees 😊 as they're a foundation for the rest of the plantings, but I believe there was a lesson in it for me. I will be taking those plums out. I cannot let them grow to a standard height in that location as they will be shading the area too much, but perhaps I can add new ones further down the field or consider replacing the orchard plums.... Have a great week 😊💚🌿
Really sorry about the plum trees. I think mine had the same a few years ago, but I didn’t realise at the time; I did nothing and actually it seems to have coped. Beautiful shots of the bullfinch.
Thank you so much 😊💚🌿 We live and learn, right? I should have caught this much earlier though, but was too busy looking at flowers 😅.... I'll come up with a new plan 😊💚🌿
Aw how disappointing. I have an old victoria plum that looks dead on its legs but keeps pumping out plums, thriving on neglect! Maybe you'll get lucky... Beautiful footage of the bull finches ❤
Thank you, Kerry 🤗💚🌿 I think you're right about some plants do so much better without us meddling with them 😂 but I cannot keep those trees there without being able to keep them in shape as they'll shade the area too much....I might find another area for new trees 😍and become a scarecrow underneath of them to keep the birds away 😂
Oh what a pretty finch!🤩. Love the color! With our weather and micro climates not sure if we will see plums. Late spring frosts and early warmth is disaster. My apples look awful and I failed to get cedar rust resistant on all of them.
The bull finches are so pretty and chunky 😍Very sorry to hear about your apple trees.... it can be very disheartening to be constantly battling with diseases 💚🌿Don't loose hope though 🥰
The Gardening Channel with James Prigioni has amazing fruit tree success. He sprays the trees with a special clay….don’t remember the name. He has several episodes showing process and results. His amazing garden is in New Jersey USA. James and his dog, Tuck, will inspire you!
@sydneygardener540 Hiya, do they spray it on the trees? I looked it up here and there is an organic gardening supplier selling it, but they refer its use for water and nutrients absorbing in sandy soils. We have heavy clay....🤔
Hi Maiju, canker is a tough one to deal with, when you get a chance check your hornbeam hedge because that's also susceptible to canker. Nice shots of the bull finches.
Thank you, Ady 🥰 I haven't noticed any dieback on the hedges, but I really should have paid more attention to the leaves of the plum trees earlier as they showed the browning straight away in early summer. It didn't even occur to me to consider canker as the spring was so cold and every plant suffered. 💚🌿
The prospect of losing a highly prized and long anticipated fruit tree is understandably gutting. For it to potentially fail when so close to the next phase of development, must feel even more sad. I do admire your practicality on moving forward, despite your obvious disappointment. I wish you the very best of luck on whatever plan of action you decide. I had to remove a young peach and apricot tree a while ago and it still rankles me thinking about the one fruit I got from each that was amazing🤭 Onwards and upwards! As the saying goes. The Bullfinch is amazing😍. I’ve yet to see one for real. Being absolutely battered here on the SE Coast and currently wind gusts of 50mph … crazy weather for this time of year.
Oh, the winds are crazy! All ex-tropical storm...I hope it didn't to a lot of damage 🫣 Thanks a million for your kind comment 💚🌿 the tree issues are tough indeed as they're such slow growing plants.... I'll think of a new plan 😀 and onwards and upwards, indeed 😊💚🌿 Have a great weekend!
I hope the trees work out for you, it is sad when things don’t go to plan. My nana was my favourite gardener and I learned a lot from her. Crazy to think it’s almost September already yet I love fall. Loads of jobs to do but fingers crossed for you ❤, have a super weekend, Ali ☔️🌞🇨🇦
Thanks a million, Ali 🤗🤗 I love autumn, too 😍 I'm still hoping for a bit more of warmer weather, the tomatoes aren't even ripening up fast enough in the greenhouse because it's not warm enough... but we'll get there 😂 Have a great weekend, too and best wishes, Maiju 😊💚🌿
I feel your disappointment. We planted young fruit trees a couple of years ago. This year we had our first crop - a grand total of three cherries and a plum! And now we are about to move house so won’t ever have the pleasure of the harvest from them. Of our own making, I know but it is still one of the only things we are sad to leave behind. That and the asparagus bed that we only cropped for the first time this year.
🤗😊 I'm sorry for your trees and maybe even more about the asparagus as that plant you definitely need more time and patience with, as you could get a more mature fruit tree planted and that should crop quicker than young trees. I love trees 💚🌿and it is true about the saying the right time to plant a tree was 10 or 20 years ago, but the 2nd best time is to do it today 😊💚🌿 I found cherry trees easier to grow than plums, now I just need to get better at protecting the cherry fruit 😂 But perhaps it's just down to the varieties I ended up buying....🤷♀️ I hope you'll get to have a couple of fruit trees in your new home 😊💚🌿
A charming video. 😊 I must also get two plum trees but I have not found nice ones yet. It is the birds that are eating our apples not the wasps like your tree. There are so many challenges in the garden with pests & diseases. It is really annoying. I am so sorry. Thank you so much.
Thank you so much 🥰 The male wasps become idle at the end of summer and looking for sugar boost, so they seem to be attracted to the fruit in our garden, but the apples are the only ones left in August 😀 I've seen people put out jam for the wasps to attract them away from fruit, but it hasn't worked for me. They still prefer the apples. In the orchard its the crows that will attach the trees, so annoying, indeed 🫣
@@spudsandroses Yes it is crows that are eating the apples here too. I saw one this morning. Perhaps netting would work. Your sweetpeas look great. Some of mine are ok but some are still small & have hardly grown at all. I am not sure why. One reason might I planted them out in July. The spot they are in is sunny & other plants like it there. I will plant them earlier next year. 🙂
Bullfinches destroyed my apples this year and then in June the Woolly Aphids attacked. I think I can deal with Bullfinches but the Aphids seem to be bigger problem.
The Bullfinches do a lot of damage, but they are stunners.... Would you consider planting herbs at the base of your trees? Even Lavender or Nepeta... to keep the balance between pollinators-predators and ward off the pests 😊💚🌿
Hi there dear, You could put a bird net over the plumbs which will stop the bull finches. That tree looks very sick to me. You need to keep the aphids under control or you will get plumb pox. Plumb trees fruit the following year you plant them even maiden whips will have some fruit. The only thing preventing that would be frost when flowering. I would just let it grow as a bush if I were you. Looks like heavy infection of blight to me. That is canker for sure, trust me I have grown fruit trees for years and I would dig it up and burn it. It's not worth saving as will spread to the other trees. Don't even think about it, also you only prune plumbs in Autumn not spring after you have harvested.
Hiya 😊💚🌿 The espalier forms need pruning more often, and I definitely should have checked them way earlier. I agree about digging them out and burning them and making another plan 💚🌿
@@spudsandroses All the burning on the leaves I noticed is a dead give away that you have canker. Is not worth saving as will spread to the other trees as well over time and don't plant any new tree you buy in the same place. Another good thing we have over here is the cost of trees. I have seen them in E Bay and garden centers at £20 + here they are E5 so a tad cheaper and that's retail as in garden shop.
Ohh you are looking so sad and worried to these branches as something very desatrous has happened in some one life😅😅😅.come on these are trees not humen that you cnt get them back in life.just go buy some new one and plant.you look like when a baby loss some thing preciouse and start crying😂😂😂😂😂 AMAZING
Thank you 💚🌿That was my honest initial reaction 🥰 I agree, it might come across too emotional, but that is how I felt at that moment😊 Trees are a type of a baby to a gardener, I suppose 😍 💚🌿

Awww Maiju, I really feel for you with that plum tree but I think you made the best decision. 🤗
Courgettes and apples look lovely.
