    Creating cloth simulations has become very easy in Unreal Engine 4. In this video, I show you how to set up a cloth simulation for a simple flag. Topics covered: Exporting assets from Maya, cloth painting, simple wind.

    For anyone following this tutorial, if you can't see the "Activate Cloth Paint" button at the top of your skeletal mesh window, make sure to head on over to the top window bar for your project, click edit, editor preferences, then with after clicking "all settings", search for "cloth", then at the top of the list, click enable clothing tools, and then restart unreal engine.

    Ok , great Video , but nothing works on engine version 4.24 , the simulation doesn't do anything and the wind doesn't blow anything.
    -----> Here is the fix for that version :
    CLOTH SIM : you have to APPLY DATA only AFTER you have painted the mask( the pink and white painting thing)
    THE WIND : you have to input a NEGATIVE value in the strenght slider
    Dont't ask my why they are only workaround the bugs of the engine version.

    5:14 hello guys, sorry to interrupt with such a non-sense question from me. At the time I mention, when I finish painting weight and click "Deactivate Cloth Painting"; mesh doesn't affect gravity in the video game at all. It still stands there at the same original post I import as .fbx
    Do I miss something or do I need to activate anything before it will activate

    Pleae redo this tutorial for 4.24. After following your instructions EXACTLY, the flag will still not work (stays static).

      Same problem for me. In fact if I create it in 4.23 and then upgrade to 4.24 it still works, but when I do exactly the same steps building in 4.24 from scratch it doesn't work. Anyone have a resolution for this yet please?

      I found the following on the Unreal community site, which seems to work.     Doesn't work for me, after painting the cloth and exiting paint mode, exactly as in the video, nothing happens, no simulation and the flag stays still

      @@jeffreywarf4568 I found a solution where on the Mesh section (where the others are skeleton and Physics section), beside the clothing tab for cloth brush, there is the skeleton tab, right click the Flag_Pole bone and go to remove selected then select From LOD 0 only. Hope this helps.

      if you cant start the simulation, try to press reimport mesh button

    For anyone having problems with this in 4.24: AFTER painting you need to select your section and click "Apply Clothing Data" again

      And 4.24 - you need to TYPE the brush value. The slider only goes up to 100. Spent whole night trying to figure out what was wrong. My cloth was just falling up to a point, hitting an invisible plane afterwards.

    Hi, I have problem. I've done everything correct till 5:11 and then my Flag didnt fall just stayed as it is...

    What about hair ? Almost Characters need hair , but look like not even the Unreal market sale hair for our female characters...

    Hi everyone, for those with 4.24, hit "Apply clothing data" only after you paint, otherwise it won't work.

    Looks amazing. I've never done anything associated with cloth before and will probably try this out one day.
    The results looks amazing and of course I understand the simpler it is and the less time you spend the "cheaper" results you get (even though it looks amazing already), but using your video as a reference - is there a way to give the flag an ever smoother animation? the cloth meets itself beautifully in the animation, but everything "outside" or around the flag or whatever you wanna call it, sort of stutters in the animation. Is there a way to make it stutter less and give the flag overall a much smoother animation?

      Hi, thanks :) Definitely give it a go yourself, it's super easy. As for the 'stuttering', this can be fixed just by tweaking the wind settings. Maybe by setting the strength lower and putting the speed up, the motion will smooth out. I'll do a bit more testing and have a look into it, thanks again!

    I cant seem to make it work in 4.24.2... :/ I looked into my physich asset capsules and it wont even react to those, my cape just stands there straight :/

      Having the same issue, a quite baffling thing I noticed is that if you light up the flag with a spot light for example, you will see that the shadows of the flag will appear as if the flag is moving in the wind, but the actual flag is standing still - this is some next level quantum stuff seemingly happening right here

    I want to make a flag that flutters in the flag, breaks off, comes off from the flag, flutters in the wind, and lands on a rock. How can i do that?

    Awesome quick little tutorial. Thank you. Used concept for a hanging banner in my 4.23 sci-fi project with no problems. Also, tested in 4.24 with no issues.

      @@underscore00 After testing, it can't be implemented in 4.24 version, it can be implemented in 4.18, I don't know if there is a bug in 4.24

      @@qianyingqiu8310 I've tested it myself in a fresh project using the tutorial assets in 4.24 and it's worked exactly as it does in the video. I'm not sure why people are having issues with 4.24, but I can assure you, I've tested it myself and it works fine :)

    What if I wanted part of a game character to be affected by cloth physics? Like a character wearing a robe or a loin cloth, or long hanging hair, that sort of thing?

      You can do that in the exact same way as described in the video - as long as the robe or cloak is included in the physics asset of the character, it should work just fine :)

    I seem to be having a really strange problem with creating my asset and importing it into unreal. I used blender to create a cylinder with a plane next to it, subdivided the plane, triangulated the mesh, parented the plane to the cylinder, then exported it as an fbx file.
    It imports into unreal just fine, and I can apply the cloth as well. The simulation runs and the cloth deforms just how I expect it to, but when I do so it tells me that there are 0 simulated vertices in the clothing data and the wind doesn't affect the material whatsoever. I've been trying to figure out where I went wrong for hours. Any ideas?
    Note: When I use the fbx file in the video description everything works perfectly, but I want to be able to create my own assets for this as well. I've also tried creating the mesh in 3DS Max to no avail.

      well blender is garbage but I forgive you because you used 3dsmax :D There was an issue I encountered where geometry wouldn't behave properly in UE4 exported from 3dsmax. Basically, if the object is not set as "editable mesh" and then exported as a .fbx you'll have issues.

      Wind only by default, though there's probably a method for getting it to collide with actors

    this is the right way for 4.24
    1. right click, create clothing data
    2. activate cloth paint
    3. start brushing
    4. deactivate clothing paint
    5. right click, apply clothing data
    it works for me

    I have a question. How to make cloth simulation for game? Too high polycount (lots of subdivisions) would be to expensive for games? So what is the compromise to make nice looking cloth simulation while keeping performance good?

    It is great but sadly does not work on any clothes like jeans or shirts after I did what you did there is no option for Apply clothing data

    Hey Underscore, theoretically speaking is there anyway to get my Grass to follow the same direction of the flag? AKA to respond to the directional wind actor. Ue4 seems to want to make wind difficult.

    Thanks for the tutorial, man! Seem to be having the same issue a number of other folks are running into though, the flag is sagging and showing proper physics from the cloth painting, but the wind directional source is having no effect on the skeleton in game test. Cloth sags, but no gusts or billows. Is this no longer possible on recent versions of UE4? 4.24, 4.25, etc?

    It works great, but when I do it again for a second asset it doesn't work. any ideas? When importing I cleared the physics asset so it creates a new one and not use the one from the first asset.

    Great easy tutorial! Need some help though. There's a point while painting that if I pass it the simulation glitches out and the cloth of the flag stops showing in the game world. I can't even paint it next to the actual post cause this happens. Anyone else experiencing this or know how to solve it?

    Hi great tutorial! I followed every step (i'm making a torri with a banner going across it) and when i get to the physic part; i've realised it's not linked to my mesh at all; just brings me to a different screen entirely

      Hi, thanks! Sounds like you're looking at the physics assets and not the skeletal mesh. If that's not the case, try deleting and re-importing the asset. Let me know if that doesn't work and if you can, send me a screenshot of what you're looking at and I might be able to help further :)

      Youre welcome; and i meant at 3.15 of your video, top right you can see the hierarchy skeleton>mesh>phsyics. Mine doesn't say physics but it says animation. I have the physicsasset but its not part of the heriarchy :)

      That's interesting... I've got the engine open now and I get skeleton>mesh>physics when I open up all three files; the links at the top right of the screen just switch between which asset component you're handling. If you're seeing 'animation' then my guess is you've imported the skeletal mesh with animations? When I open up UE4_Mannequin_Skeleton (the default third person model) I see skeleton>mesh>animation>blueprint>physics, which is closer to what you're seeing. Either way you should be able to create the cloth simulation as long as you have a skeletal mesh asset.
      So to sum up, things to consider are importing the asset without animation (and without it automatically creating it's own animation blueprint), making sure it's being imported as a skeletal mesh, and making sure your cloth mesh is grouped to the rest of the asset or rigged to the skeleton you're using. I hope this helps! If you're still running into trouble, let me know. I might need to see it myself to offer anything more specific.
      edit: Oh another thing it could be is your engine version. I made this tute in 4.19, and (don't quote me on this) the new built-in cloth tech was introduced in 4.16 (I think).

      Hmm seems it renders animated, it just doesnt play back in the sequencer :/

      The simplest way to make the flag interact with other objects is to add those objects to the cloth physics asset. I havent tried doing cloth with transparency, but it should work fine! Hope that helps! :)

      It should work for hair, yes. Though you probably have to tweak some values here and there to make it work.

    But what if the character and cloth are directly connected to each other?
    Or if the character you made is in Blender?

      It shouldnt be a problem if you use blender - as long as the object hierarchy is the same and you can import the asset as a skeletal mesh, it should work fine. If the objects are directly connected it should work OK as well :) Give it a go! Let me know if you run into problems :)

      Could just be a problem with wind direction. Try and rotate the flag or the wind direction component and see if that helps.

    when i brought my fbx flag in, i cannot seem to select the cloth separate from the pole? I created it the exact same way as you did in maya.

    Hey...so I tried this and when I got to the point where I'm painting (about the 5 minute mark), I don't get the paint circle you get. I get like a green line and all the lines on the flag are green. What am I doing wrong?

      I'll have to double check this - there's been 3 point releases to the engine since I made this video so it could just be that the in-engine graphic has changed. So nothing happens when you try to paint?
      I'll have another look at this and get back to you :)

      The cloth will interact with anything in it's own physics assets.

    An issue I'm having is that when my flag deforms it doesn't do so smoothly. As in, I can see the faces in the mesh of the flag where it deforms. I have tried it with another plane as well and still get the blocky deformations.

      Sounds like a mesh density issue. Add more subdivisions to your mesh to give the cloth more faces to deform. Thanks for watching! :)

    For 4.24 After finish painting, unselect "Deactive Cloth Paint" first!! then right click and "Apply Clothing Data"

    Does it have colliders? Like, does it react when the player walks into the flag? Great video!

      The cloth will collide with anything inside it's own physics asset, so it will react to the pole, but not with the player. I might revisit this sometime to show how to tweak it to react with the world.

      adjust the paint value

      but that's distance in cm so you need to make sure your scale is correct
